Abstract

The investigation of spatial and temporal patterns was employed to examine the complexity of resource limitation in the estuarine areas of Chesapeake Bay. By analyzing nutrient addition bioassays at 18 stations in the area, resources that limited phytoplankton growth were determined. These limiting factors were identified to be mixing, temperature, river discharge and sediment fluxes. Other factors such as turbidity and nutrient concentration were also found to be important in tidal fresh stations.
