Rye (Secale cereale L.) cultivation has a long history in the Alpine region, where local ecotypes have been honed through generations of human selection. Despite the introduction of commercial varieties during the 20th century, traditional ecotypes are believed to persist in Valtellina, especially in the medium/upper valley (Teglio and Bormio). Our study aims to identify and preserve these local rye ecotypes by comparing them to commercial varieties. We examined 14 rye accessions through population genetic analyses (by using eight SSR makers), agronomic trials (germplasm characters, plant traits, and yields), and phytochemical analyses (total phenolic compound, flavonoids, and the radical scavenging activity). Two commercial varieties were used—one from Poland, previously genetically characterized (C_POL_P1; i.e., P1 ancestry), and one with an unknown origin. Additionally, we analyzed eleven accessions from Valtellina (medium and upper valley) and one from another alpine valley in South Tirol (Laimburg; LAI). Molecular markers analysis revealed the presence of two distinct genetic lineages: the first (P1) comprised all Teglio accessions and the commercial one from Poland, while the second (P2) grouped the two alpine accessions from Bormio (upper Valtellina) and South Tirol, along with a commercial one of uncertain origin. The clusters P2 exhibited significantly lower average values of the number of alleles (z = 2.03; p < 0.05), Shannon index (z = 2.35; p < 0.05), and expected heterozygosity (z = 1.97; p < 0.05) than in P1. Significant differences were observed in plant traits and agronomic performance between P1 and P2 accessions, with the latter displaying superior traits. For instance, the seed weight of germplasm was the highest in P2 (H(chi2) = 22.44; p < 0.001). Phytochemical analyses did not reveal a clear pattern between genetic lineages but identified some very well-performing Valtellina landraces in terms of scavenging activity. Characterizing these local rye varieties helps establish a short food supply chain to support Valtellina's mountain economy. The medium valley (P1) and upper valley (P2) varieties have the potential for agroecological valorization, benefiting local farmers. Phytochemical analyses identified better accessions within P1 and P2 for nutraceutical use and commercialization. Species adapted to prevailing soil and climatic conditions and native to the same geographic context are increasingly recommended for ecological restoration at high altitude. Better knowledge is required on the level of variation within these species for morpho-physiological traits and seed yield. Adequate and affordable seed production is a prerequisite for native species to be widely adopted for restoration interventions. This study evaluated the variation of yarrow (Achillea millefolium L.) germplasm collected in the Rhaetian Alps, Italy. The worth of yarrow for restoration at high altitude has been repeatedly noted. The main goal of the study was to identify promising materials for selection purposes. The explored mountain section harbored valuable variation for traits of interest. Altitude, climate, and soil should frame an ecological correspondence between the collection site and the target restoration site, to secure the value of the native germplasm outside the boundaries of its collection area. The work also assessed any interaction between the germplasm and the ex situ growing environments, represented by a mountain and a lowland site, and verified the feasibility of the latter for seed multiplication. The growing site remarkably affected several morpho-physiological characters. The lack of difference in mean seed yield between the two altitude-contrasting sites suggested that seed multiplication of yarrow could also be conveniently carried out in lowland environments, with advantages in terms of production costs. Nonetheless, different yield responses in the two sites were observed, emphasizing the need of choosing the material to multiply based on the environment adopted for seed production. Hay-making structures are part of the agricultural landscape of meadows and pastures. Hay meadows are still used and found all over Europe, but their distribution patterns as well as their characteristics and regional features depend on geographical area, climate, culture, and intensity of agriculture. Intensively used hay meadows are the most dominant, using heavy machinery to store hay mostly as rounded or square bales. Traditional hay-making structures represent structures or constructions, used to quickly dry freshly cut fodder and to protect it from humidity. The 'ancient' forms of traditional hay-making structures are becoming a relic, due to mechanisation and the use of new technologies. Both the need for drying hay and the traditional methods for doing so were similar across Europe. Our study of hay-making structures focuses on their current state, their development and history, current use and cultural values in various European countries. Regarding the construction and use of hay-making structures, we have distinguished three different types, which correlate to natural and regional conditions: (1) temporary hay racks of various shapes; (2) hay barracks, a special type of shelters for storing hay and (3) different types of permanent construction and buildings for drying and storing hay. Hay-making structures have been mostly preserved in connection with traditional agricultural landscapes, and particularly in the more remote regions or where associated with strong cultural identity.
