Search

High-precision pulsar timing observations are limited in their accuracy by the jitter noise that appears in the arrival time of pulses. Therefore, it is important to systematically characterise the amplitude of the jitter noise and its variation with frequency. In this paper, we provide jitter measurements from low-frequency wideband observations of PSR J0437$-$4715 using data obtained as part of the Indian Pulsar Timing Array experiment. We were able to detect jitter in both the 300 - 500 MHz and 1260 - 1460 MHz observations of the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT). The former is the first jitter measurement for this pulsar below 700 MHz, and the latter is in good agreement with results from previous studies. In addition, at 300 - 500 MHz, we investigated the frequency dependence of the jitter by calculating the jitter for each sub-banded arrival time of pulses. We found that the jitter amplitude increases with frequency. This trend is opposite as compared to previous studies, indicating that there is a turnover at intermediate frequencies. It will be possible to investigate this in more detail with uGMRT observations at 550 - 750 MHz and future high sensitive wideband observations from next generation telescopes, such as the Square Kilometre Array. We also explored the effect of jitter on the high precision dispersion measure (DM) measurements derived from short duration observations. We find that even though the DM precision will be better at lower frequencies due to the smaller amplitude of jitter noise, it will limit the DM precision for high signal-to-noise observations, which are of short durations. We present the results of a high-time resolution polarization study of single pulses from pulsars B0950+08 and B1642-03. Single pulses from pulsar B0950+08 sometimes show isolated micropulses without any significant associated subpulse emission. Assuming that the properties of such micropulses represent the intrinsic nature of micropulse emission, we characterize the width and polarization properties of these `intrinsic' microstructures. Most of the `intrinsic' micropulses (~90%) follow common characteristic polarization properties, while the average width of these micropulses is consistent with the general micropulse population from this pulsar. Single pulses from these pulsars show a diverse range of polarization properties, including depolarization and mixing of two orthogonal modes resulting in polarization position angle jumps. A pulsar's pulse profile gets broadened at low frequencies due to dispersion along the line of sight or due to multi-path propagation. The dynamic nature of the interstellar medium makes both of these effects time-dependent and introduces slowly varying time delays in the measured times-of-arrival similar to those introduced by passing gravitational waves. In this article, we present a new method to correct for such delays by obtaining unbiased dispersion measure (DM) measurements by using low-frequency estimates of the scattering parameters. We evaluate this method by comparing the obtained DM estimates with those, where scatter-broadening is ignored using simulated data. A bias is seen in the estimated DMs for simulated data with pulse-broadening with a larger variability for a data set with a variable frequency scaling index, $\alpha$, as compared to that assuming a Kolmogorov turbulence. Application of the proposed method removes this bias robustly for data with band averaged signal-to-noise ratio larger than 100. We report, for the first time, the measurements of the scatter-broadening time and $\alpha$ from analysis of PSR J1643$-$1224, observed with upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope as part of the Indian Pulsar Timing Array experiment. These scattering parameters were found to vary with epoch and $\alpha$ was different from that expected for Kolmogorov turbulence. The wideband timing technique enables the high-precision simultaneous estimation of pulsar Times of Arrival (ToAs) and Dispersion Measures (DMs) while effectively modeling frequency-dependent profile evolution. We present two novel independent methods that extend the standard wideband technique to handle simultaneous multi-band pulsar data incorporating profile evolution over a larger frequency span to estimate DMs and ToAs with enhanced precision. We implement the wideband likelihood using the libstempo python interface to perform wideband timing in the tempo2 framework. We present the application of these techniques to the dataset of fourteen millisecond pulsars observed simultaneously in Band 3 (300 - 500 MHz) and Band 5 (1260 - 1460 MHz) of the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) with a large band gap of 760 MHz as a part of the Indian Pulsar Timing Array (InPTA) campaign. We achieve increased ToA and DM precision and sub-microsecond root mean square post-fit timing residuals by combining simultaneous multi-band pulsar observations done in non-contiguous bands for the first time using our novel techniques., Comment: Published in MNRAS

Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) provide a way to detect gravitational waves at nanohertz frequencies. In this band, the most likely signals are stochastic, with a power spectrum that rises steeply at lower frequencies. Indeed, the observation of a common red noise process in pulsar-timing data suggests that the first credible detection of nanohertz-frequency gravitational waves could take place within the next few years. The detection process is complicated by the nature of the signals and the noise: the first observational claims will be statistical inferences drawn at the threshold of detectability. To demonstrate that gravitational waves are creating some of the noise in the pulsar-timing data sets, observations must exhibit the Hellings and Downs curve -- the angular correlation function associated with gravitational waves -- as well as demonstrating that there are no other reasonable explanations. To ensure that detection claims are credible, the International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA) has a formal process to vet results prior to publication. This includes internal sharing of data and processing pipelines between different PTAs, enabling independent cross-checks and validation of results. To oversee and validate any detection claim, the IPTA has also created an eight-member Detection Committee (DC) which includes four independent external members. IPTA members will only publish their results after a formal review process has concluded. This document is the initial DC checklist, describing some of the conditions that should be fulfilled by a credible detection. The Indian Pulsar Timing Array (InPTA) collaboration has recently made its first official data release (DR1) for a sample of 14 pulsars using 3.5 years of uGMRT observations. We present the results of single-pulsar noise analysis for each of these 14 pulsars using the InPTA DR1. For this purpose, we consider white noise, achromatic red noise, dispersion measure (DM) variations, and scattering variations in our analysis. We apply Bayesian model selection to obtain the preferred noise models among these for each pulsar. For PSR J1600$-$3053, we find no evidence of DM and scattering variations, while for PSR J1909$-$3744, we find no significant scattering variations. Properties vary dramatically among pulsars. For example, we find a strong chromatic noise with chromatic index $\sim$ 2.9 for PSR J1939+2134, indicating the possibility of a scattering index that doesn't agree with that expected for a Kolmogorov scattering medium consistent with similar results for millisecond pulsars in past studies. Backed by advances in digital electronics, signal processing, computation, and storage technologies, aperture arrays, which had strongly influenced the design of telescopes in the early years of radio astronomy, have made a comeback. Amid all these developments, an international effort to design and build the world's largest radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), is ongoing. With its vast collecting area of 1 sq-km, the SKA is envisaged to provide unsurpassed sensitivity and leverage technological advances to implement a complex receiver to provide a large field of view through multiple beams on the sky. Many pathfinders and precursor aperture array telescopes for the SKA, operating in the frequency range of 10-300 MHz, have been constructed and operationalized to obtain valuable feedback on scientific, instrumental, and functional aspects. This review article looks explicitly into the progression of digital-receiver architecture from the Murchison Widefield Array (precursor) to the SKA1-Low. It highlights the technological advances in analog-to-digital converters (ADCs),field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and central processing unit-graphics processing unit (CPU-GPU) hybrid platforms around which complex digital signal processing systems implement efficient channelizers, beamformers, and correlators. Decades long monitoring of millisecond pulsars, which exhibit highly stable rotational periods, in pulsar timing array experiments is on the threshold of discovering nanohertz stochastic gravitational wave background. This paper describes the Indian Pulsar timing array (InPTA) experiment, which employs the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) for timing an ensemble of millisecond pulsars for this purpose. We highlight InPTA's observation strategies and analysis methods, which are relevant for a future PTA experiment with the more sensitive Square Kilometer Array (SKA) telescope. We show that the unique multi-sub-array multi-band wide-bandwidth frequency coverage of the InPTA provides Dispersion Measure estimates with unprecedented precision for PTA pulsars, e.g., ~ 2 x 10{-5} pc-cm{-3} for PSR J1909-3744. Configuring the SKA-low and SKA-mid as two and four sub-arrays respectively, it is shown that comparable precision is achievable, using observation strategies similar to those pursued by the InPTA, for a larger sample of 62 pulsars requiring about 26 and 7 hours per epoch for the SKA-mid and the SKA-low telescopes respectively. We also review the ongoing efforts to develop PTA-relevant general relativistic constructs that will be required to search for nanohertz gravitational waves from isolated super-massive black hole binary systems like blazar OJ 287. We present the pulse arrival times and high-precision dispersion measure estimates for 14 millisecond pulsars observed simultaneously in the 300-500 MHz and 1260-1460 MHz frequency bands using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT). The data spans over a baseline of 3.5 years (2018-2021), and is the first official data release made available by the Indian Pulsar Timing Array collaboration. This data release presents a unique opportunity for investigating the interstellar medium effects at low radio frequencies and their impact on the timing precision of pulsar timing array experiments. In addition to the dispersion measure time series and pulse arrival times obtained using both narrowband and wideband timing techniques, we also present the dispersion measure structure function analysis for selected pulsars. Our ongoing investigations regarding the frequency dependence of dispersion measures have been discussed. Based on the preliminary analysis for five millisecond pulsars, we do not find any conclusive evidence of chromaticity in dispersion measures. Data from regular simultaneous two-frequency observations are presented for the first time in this work. This distinctive feature leads us to the highest precision dispersion measure estimates obtained so far for a subset of our sample. Simultaneous multi-band uGMRT observations in Band 3 and Band 5 are crucial for high-precision dispersion measure estimation and for the prospect of expanding the overall frequency coverage upon the combination of data from the various Pulsar Timing Array consortia in the near future. High-precision measurements of the pulsar dispersion measure (DM) are possible using telescopes with low-frequency wideband receivers. We present an initial study of the application of the wideband timing technique, which can simultaneously measure the pulsar times of arrival (ToAs) and DMs, for a set of five pulsars observed with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) as part of the Indian Pulsar Timing Array (InPTA) campaign. We have used the observations with the 300-500 MHz band of the uGMRT for this purpose. We obtain high precision in DM measurements with precisions of the order 10^{-6}cm^{-3}pc. The ToAs obtained have sub-{\mu}s precision and the root-mean-square of the post-fit ToA residuals are in the sub-{\mu}s range. We find that the uncertainties in the DMs and ToAs obtained with this wideband technique, applied to low-frequency data, are consistent with the results obtained with traditional pulsar timing techniques and comparable to high-frequency results from other PTAs. This work opens up an interesting possibility of using low-frequency wideband observations for precision pulsar timing and gravitational wave detection with similar precision as high-frequency observations used conventionally., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

PSR J1713+0747 is one of the most precisely timed pulsars in the international pulsar timing array experiment. This pulsar showed an abrupt profile shape change between April 16, 2021 (MJD 59320) and April 17, 2021 (MJD 59321). In this paper, we report the results from multi-frequency observations of this pulsar carried out with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) before and after the event. We demonstrate the profile change seen in Band 5 (1260 MHz - 1460 MHz) and Band 3 (300 MHz - 500 MHz). The timing analysis of this pulsar shows a disturbance accompanying this profile change followed by a recovery with a timescale of $\sim 159$ days. Our data suggest that a model with chromatic index as a free parameter is preferred over models with combinations of achromaticity with DM bump or scattering bump. Pulsar radio emission undergoes dispersion due to the presence of free electrons in the interstellar medium (ISM). The dispersive delay in the arrival time of pulsar signal changes over time due to the varying ISM electron column density along the line of sight. Correcting for this delay accurately is crucial for the detection of nanohertz gravitational waves using Pulsar Timing Arrays. In this work, we present in-band and inter-band DM estimates of four pulsars observed with uGMRT over the timescale of a year using two different template alignment methods. The DMs obtained using both these methods show only subtle differences for PSR 1713+0747 and J1909$-$3744. A considerable offset is seen in the DM of PSR J1939+2134 and J2145$-$0750 between the two methods. This could be due to the presence of scattering in the former and profile evolution in the latter. We find that both methods are useful but could have a systematic offset between the DMs obtained. Irrespective of the template alignment methods followed, the precision on the DMs obtained is about $10^{-3}$ pc cm$^{-3}$ using only BAND3 and $10^{-4}$ pc cm$^{-3}$ after combining data from BAND3 and BAND5 of the uGMRT. In a particular result, we have detected a DM excess of about $5\times10^{-3}$ pc cm$^{-3}$ on 24 February 2019 for PSR J2145$-$0750. This excess appears to be due to the interaction region created by fast solar wind from a coronal hole and a coronal mass ejection (CME) observed from the Sun on that epoch. We introduce pinta, a pipeline for reducing the upgraded Giant Metre-wave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) raw pulsar timing data, developed for the Indian Pulsar Timing Array experiment. We provide a detailed description of the workflow and usage of pinta, as well as its computational performance and RFI mitigation characteristics. We also discuss a novel and independent determination of the relative time offsets between the different back-end modes of uGMRT and the interpretation of the uGMRT observation frequency settings, and their agreement with results obtained from engineering tests. Further, we demonstrate the capability of pinta to generate data products which can produce high-precision TOAs using PSR J1909-3744 as an example. These results are crucial for performing precision pulsar timing with the uGMRT.

We present an experiment performed to understand the polarization convention adopted for band 4 (550--900 MHz) of the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT). For that we observed the pulsar B1702--19 in this band, both in interferometry and pulsar modes, and compare the results with its already known Stokes $I$, $Q$, $U$, $V$ profiles obtained with the Lovell telescope. We find that the results obtained from interferometry and pulsar modes of the uGMRT agree with each other. However, although the Stokes $U$ profile obtained with the uGMRT match with that obtained by the Lovell telescope, Stokes $Q$ and $V$ do not. This can be explained if the $X$ and $Y$ dipoles in this band, from which $R$ and $L$ are derived, are swapped w.r.t. the IAU convention. The swapping makes $RR^*$ and $LL^*$ of the uGMRT band 4 to be $LL^*$ and $RR^*$ respectively according to the IEEE convention. This implies that if we need to compare polarization measurements obtained in band 4 of the uGMRT with telescopes like Lovell, Parkes, Very Large Array etc. (all follow IEEE convention for defining right and left hand circular polarization), we must interchange $RR^*$ and $LL^*$, and change the sign of Stokes $Q$ for the uGMRT data. Note that this is the current convention for uGMRT band 4, and is likely to change in future once the swapping of the dipoles is taken care of. (abridged) In this work we present the results of one year of upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope timing measurements of PSR~J0514$-$4002A, a 4.99-ms pulsar in a 18.8-day, eccentric ($e \, =\, 0.89$) orbit with a massive companion located in the globular cluster NGC~1851. Combining these data with earlier Green Bank Telescope data, we greatly improve the precision of the rate of advance of periastron, $\dot{\omega} \, = \, 0.0129592(16)\, \deg \, \rm yr^{-1}$ which, assuming the validity of general relativity, results in a much refined measurement of the total mass of the binary, $M_{\rm tot} \, = \, 2.4730(6) \, M_{\odot}$. Additionally, we measure the Einstein delay parameter, $\gamma\,, = \, 0.0216(9) \, \rm s$. Furthermore, we measure the proper motion of the system ($\mu_{\alpha} \, = \, 5.19(22)$ and $\mu_{\delta} = -0.56(25)\rm~mas ~ yr^{-1}$), which is not only important for analyzing its motion in the cluster, but is also essential for a proper interpretation of $\gamma$, given the latter parameter's correlation with the variation of the projected semi-major axis. The measurements of $\gamma$ and the proper motion enable a separation of the system component masses: we obtain a pulsar mass of $M_{p} \, = \, 1.25^{+0.05}_{-0.06} \, M_{\odot}$ and a companion mass of $M_{c} \, = \, 1.22^{+0.06}_{-0.05} \, M_{\odot}$. This raises the possibility that the companion is also a neutron star. Searches for radio pulsations from the companion have thus far been unsuccessful, hence we cannot confirm the latter hypothesis. The low mass of this millisecond pulsar - one of the lowest ever measured for such objects - clearly indicates that the recycling process can be achieved with a relatively small amount of mass transfer., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) is being upgraded to increase the receiver sensitivity. This makes the receiver more susceptible to man-made Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). To improve the receiver performance in presence of RFI, real-time RFI excision (filtering) is incorporated in the GMRT wideband backend (GWB). The RFI filtering system is implemented on FPGA and CPU-GPU platforms to detect and remove broadband and narrowband RFI. The RFI is detected using a threshold-based technique where the threshold is computed using Median Absolute Deviation (MAD) estimator. The filtering is carried out by replacing the RFI samples by either noise samples or constant value or threshold. This paper describes the status of the real-time broadband RFI excision system in the wideband receiver chain of the upgraded GMRT (uGMRT). The test methodology for carrying out various tests to demonstrate the performance of broadband RFI excision at the system level and on radio astronomical imaging experiments are also described., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Microstructure emission, involving short time scale, often quasi-periodic, intensity fluctuations in subpulse emission, is well known in normal period pulsars. In this letter, we present the first detections of quasi-periodic microstructure emission from millisecond pulsars (MSPs), from Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations of two MSPs at 325 and 610 MHz. Similar to the characteristics of microstructure observed in normal period pulsars, we find that these features are often highly polarized, and exhibit quasi-periodic behavior on top of broader subpulse emission, with periods of the order of a few $\mu$s. By measuring their widths and periodicities from single pulse intensity profiles and their autocorrelation functions, we extend the microstructure timescale - rotation period relationship by more than an order of magnitude down to rotation periods $\sim$ 5 ms, and find it to be consistent with the relationship derived earlier for normal pulsars. The similarity of behavior is remarkable, given the significantly different physical properties of MSPs and normal period pulsars, and rules out several previous speculations about the possible different characteristics of microstructure in MSP radio emission. We discuss the possible reasons for the non-detection of these features in previous high time resolution MSP studies along with the physical implications of our results, both in terms of a geometric beam sweeping model and temporal modulation model for micropulse production., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. It is an exceptionally opportune time for Astrophysics when a number of next-generation mega-instruments are poised to observe the universe across the entire electromagnetic spectrum with unprecedented data quality. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is undoubtedly one of the major components of this scenario. In particular, the SKA is expected to discover tens of thousands of new neutron stars giving a major fillip to a wide range of scientific investigations. India has a sizeable community of scientists working on different aspects of neutron star physics with immediate access to both the uGMRT (an SKA pathfinder) and the recently launched X-ray observatory Astrosat. The current interests of the community largely centre around studies of - a) the generation of neutron stars and the SNe connection}, b) the neutron star population and evolutionary pathways}, c) the evolution of neutron stars in binaries and the magnetic fields}, d) the neutron star equation of state}, e) the radio pulsar emission mechanism}, and, f) the radio pulsars as probes of gravitational physics}. Most of these studies are the main goals of the SKA first phase, which is likely to be operational in the next four years. The Square Kilometre Array Telescope Manager (SKA TM) will be responsible for assisting the SKA Operations and Observation Management, carrying out System diagnosis and collecting Monitoring & Control data from the SKA sub-systems and components. To provide adequate compute resources, scalability, operation continuity and high availability, as well as strict Quality of Service, the TM cyber-infrastructure (embodied in the Local Infrastructure - LINFRA) consists of COTS hardware and infrastructural software (for example: server monitoring software, host operating system, virtualization software, device firmware), providing a specially tailored Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) solution. The TM infrastructure provides services in the form of computational power, software defined networking, power, storage abstractions, and high level, state of the art IaaS and PaaS management interfaces. This cyber platform will be tailored to each of the two SKA Phase 1 telescopes (SKA_MID in South Africa and SKA_LOW in Australia) instances, each presenting different computational and storage infrastructures and conditioned by location. This cyber platform will provide a compute model enabling TM to manage the deployment and execution of its multiple components (observation scheduler, proposal submission tools, M&C components, Forensic tools and several Databases, etc). A fully real-time coherent dedispersion system has been developed for the pulsar back-end at the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The dedispersion pipeline uses the single phased array voltage beam produced by the existing GMRT software back-end (GSB) to produce coherently dedispersed intensity output in real time, for the currently operational bandwidths of 16 MHz and 32 MHz. Provision has also been made to coherently dedisperse voltage beam data from observations recorded on disk. We discuss the design and implementation of the real-time coherent dedispersion system, describing the steps carried out to optimise the performance of the pipeline. Presently functioning on an Intel Xeon X5550 CPU equipped with a NVIDIA Tesla C2075 GPU, the pipeline allows dispersion free, high time resolution data to be obtained in real-time. We illustrate the significant improvements over the existing incoherent dedispersion system at the GMRT, and present some preliminary results obtained from studies of pulsars using this system, demonstrating its potential as a useful tool for low frequency pulsar observations. We describe the salient features of our implementation, comparing it with other recently developed real-time coherent dedispersion systems. This implementation of a real-time coherent dedispersion pipeline for a large, low frequency array instrument like the GMRT, will enable long-term observing programs using coherent dedispersion to be carried out routinely at the observatory. The GMRT Epoch of Reionization (EoR) experiment is an ongoing effort to measure the power spectrum from neutral hydrogen at high redshift. We have previously reported an upper limit of (70 mK)^2 at wavenumbers of k=0.65 h/Mpc using a basic piecewise-linear foreground subtraction. In this paper we explore the use of a singular value decomposition to remove foregrounds with fewer assumptions about the foreground structure. Using this method we also quantify, for the first time, the signal loss due to the foreground filter and present new power spectra adjusted for this loss, providing a revised measurement of a 2-sigma upper limit at (248 mK)^2 for k=0.50 h/Mpc. We present the results from nearly three years of monitoring of the variations in dispersion measure (DM) along the line-of-sight to 11 millisecond pulsars using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). These results demonstrate accuracies of single epoch DM estimates of the order of 5x10^(-4) cm^(-3) pc. A preliminary comparison with the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array (PPTA) data shows that the measured DM fluctuations are comparable. We have developed a multi-pixel beamformer technique, which can be used for enhancing the capabilities for studying pulsars using an interferometric array. Using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), we illustrate the application of this efficient technique, which combines the enhanced sensitivity of a coherent array beamformer with the wide field-of-view seen by an incoherent array beamformer. Multi-pixel beamformer algorithm is implemented using the recorded base-band data. With the optimisations in multi-pixelisation described in this paper, it is now possible to form 16 directed beams in real-time. We discuss a special application of this technique, where we use continuum imaging followed by the multi-pixel beamformer to obtain the precise locations of newly discovered millisecond pulsars with the GMRT. Accurate positions measured with single observations enable highly sensitive follow-up studies using coherent array beamformer and rapid follow up at higher radio frequencies and other wavelengths. Normally, such accurate positions can only be obtained from a long-term pulsar timing program. The multi-pixel beamformer technique can also be used for highly sensitive targeted pulsar searches in extended supernova remnants. We present the results from timing observations with the GMRT of the young pulsar J1833-1034, in the galactic supernova remnant G21.5-0.9. We detect the presence of 4 glitches in this pulsar over a period of 5.5 years, making it one of a set of pulsars that show fairly frequent glitches. The glitch amplitudes, characterized by the fractional change of the rotational frequency, range from 1 \times 10^-9 to 7 \times 10^-9, with no evidence for any appreciable relaxation of the rotational frequency after the glitches. The fractional changes observed in the frequency derivative are of the order of 10-5 . We show conclusively that, in spite of having significant timing noise, the sudden irregularities like glitches detected in this pulsar can not be modeled as smooth timing noise. Our timing solution also provides a stable estimate of the second derivative of the pulsar spin-down model, and a plausible value for the braking index of 1.857, which, like the value for other such young pulsars, is much less than the canonical value of 3.0. PSR J1833-1034 appears to belong to a class of pulsars exhibiting fairly frequent occurrence of low amplitude glitches. This is further supported by an estimate of the glitch activity parameter, Ag = 1.53 \times 10^-15 s^-2, which is found to be significantly lower than the trend of glitch activity versus characteristic age (or spin frequency derivative) that a majority of the glitching pulsars follow. We present evidence for a class of such young pulsars, including the Crab, where higher internal temperature of the neutron star could be responsible for the nature of the observed glitch activity., Comment: 10 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results of flux density monitoring of PSR B0329+54 at the frequency of 4.8 GHz using the 32-meter TCfA radiotelescope. The observations were conducted between 2002 and 2005. The main goal of the project was to find interstellar scintillation (ISS) parameters for the pulsar at the frequency at which it was never studied in detail. To achieve this the 20 observing sessions consisted of 3-minute integrations which on average lasted 24 hours. Flux density time series obtained for each session were analysed using structure functions. For some of the individual sessions as well as for the general average structure function we were able to identify two distinctive timescales present, the timescales of diffractive and refractive scintillations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case when both scintillation timescales, t_DISS=42.7 minutes and t_RISS=305 minutes, were observed simultaneously in a uniform data set and estimated using the same method. The obtained values of the ISS parameters combined with the data found in the literature allowed us to study the frequency dependence of these parameters over a wide range of observing frequencies, which is crucial for understanding the ISM turbulence. We found that the Kolmogorov spectrum is not best suited for describing the density fluctuations of the ISM, and a power-law spectrum with beta =4 seems to fit better with our results. We were also able to estimate the transition frequency (transition from strong to weak scintillation regimes) as 10.1 GHz, much higher than was previously predicted. We present a new upper limit to the 21cm power spectrum during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) which constrains reionization models with an unheated IGM. The GMRT-EoR experiment is an ongoing effort to make a statistical detection of the power spectrum of 21cm neutral hydrogen emission at redshift z~9. Data from this redshift constrain models of the EoR, the end of the Dark Ages arising from the formation of the first bright UV sources, probably stars or mini-quasars. We present results from approximately 50 hours of observations at the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope in India from December 2007. We describe radio frequency interference (RFI) localisation schemes which allow bright sources on the ground to be identified and physically removed in addition to automated flagging. Singular-value decomposition is used to remove remaining broadband RFI by identifying ground sources with large eigenvalues. Foregrounds are modelled using a piecewise linear filter and the power spectrum is measured using cross-correlations of foreground subtracted images., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on the unique nulling properties of PSR B0818-41, using the GMRT at 325 and 610 MHz. We find following interesting behaviour just before and after the nulls: (i) The pulsar's intensity does not switch off abruptly at the null, but fades gradually, taking ~ 10 P1. Just after nulls intensity rises to a maximum over a short (less than one period) time scale. (ii) While the last active pulses before nulls are dimmer, the first few active pulses just after nulls outshine normal ones. This effect is very clear for inner region of pulsar profile, where mean intensity of last few active pulses just after nulls is ~ 2.8 times more than that for last active pulses just before nulls. (iii) There is a significant evolution of shape of the pulsar's profile, around nulls, especially at beginning of bursts: an enhanced bump of intensity in inner region, a change in ratio of strengths of the leading and trailing peaks towards a more symmetric profile, an increase in profile width of about 10%, and a shift of profile centre towards later longitudes. (iv) Just before nulls, the apparent drift rate becomes slower, transitioning to an almost phase stationary drift pattern. Further, when the pulsar comes out of null, the increased intensity is very often accompanied by what looks like a disturbed drift rate behaviour, which settles down to the regular drift pattern as the pulsar intensity returns to normal. Thus, we find some very specific and well correlated changes in the radio emission properties of PSR B0818-41 when the emission restarts after a null. These could imply that the phenomenon of nulling is associated with some kind of a "reset" of the pulsar radio emission engine. We present the results from a study of wide profile pulsars using high sensitivity multifrequency observations with the GMRT. Since the line of sight samples a large region of the polar cap in case of the wide profile pulsars, presence of simultaneous multiple drift regions is quite probable (as seen in PSR B0826-34 and PSR B0818-41). We solve the aliasing problem of PSR B0818-41 using the observed phase relationship of the drift regions, and determine its pattern rotation period P4 to be ~ 10s, which makes it the fastest known carousel. We find that, for all the pulsars showing drifting in multiple rings of emission, the drift pattern from the rings are phase locked. This can constraint the theoretical models of pulsar emission as it favors a pan magnetospeheric radiation mechanism., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, published in ASP conference series

The new era of software signal processing has a large impact on radio astronomy instrumentation. Our design and implementation of a 32 antennae, 33 MHz, dual polarization, fully real-time software backend for the GMRT, using only off-the-shelf components, is an example of this. We have built a correlator and a beamformer, using PCI-based ADC cards and a Linux cluster of 48 nodes with dual gigabit inter-node connectivity for real-time data transfer requirements. The highly optimized compute pipeline uses cache efficient, multi-threaded parallel code, with the aid of vectorized processing. This backend allows flexibility in final time and frequency resolutions, and the ability to implement algorithms for radio frequency interference rejection. Our approach has allowed relatively rapid development of a fairly sophisticated and flexible backend receiver system for the GMRT, which will greatly enhance the productivity of the telescope. In this paper we describe some of the first lights using this software processing pipeline. PSR B0818-41 is one of the few pulsars which show multiple drift regions having well defined phase relationship. In this paper we report new results from the multifrequency GMRT observations of this pulsar. Significant linear polarization is observed with depolarization at the edge of the profile, due to orthogonal polarization. Circular polarization changes sign near the middle of the pulse profile at 1060 MHz, but not observed at 325 and 610 MHz. Remarkable frequency evolution of polarization angle (PA) is observed. Based on the frequency evolution of average profile, PA swing and results from subpulse drifting, we propose two possible emission geometries, alpha~11 deg, beta~-5.4 deg and alpha~175.4 deg, beta~-6.9 deg. Simulation of the pulsar radiation pattern with both these geometries reproduces the observed features in the drift pattern quite well. In addition to the remarkable subpulse drifting observed at 325 MHz, we report subpulse drifting at 244 and 610 MHz. We observe changes of drift rates, transitions from negative to stationary and stationary to negative drift rates, with some connection with nulls. Though P3m is the same for all the drift regions, P2m and Delta(Phi) values are different for the inner and outer drift regions. The peak emission from the leading and the trailing outer regions are offset by ~ 9 P1. Utilising this information, we solve the aliasing problem and predict P4~ 10 s, which makes it the fastest known carousel. The drift pattern from the two rings are phase locked for PSR B0818-41. The GMRT reionization effort aims to map out the large scale structure of the Universe during the epoch of reionization (EoR). Removal of polarized Galactic emission is a difficult part of any 21 cm EoR program, and we present new upper limits to diffuse polarized foregrounds at 150 MHz. We find no high significance evidence of polarized emission in our observed field at mid galactic latitude (J2000 08h26m+26). We find an upper limit on the 2-dimensional angular power spectrum of diffuse polarized foregrounds of [l^2 C_l/(2 PI)]^{1/2}< 3K in frequency bins of width 1 MHz at 300 0.03 h/Mpc, k < 0.1 h/Mpc. This can be compared to the expected EoR signal in total intensity of [k^3 P(k)/ (2 PI^2) ]^{1/2} ~ 10 mK. We find polarized structure is substantially weaker than suggested by extrapolation from higher frequency observations, so the new low upper limits reported here reduce the anticipated impact of these foregrounds on EoR experiments. We discuss Faraday beam and depth depolarization models and compare predictions of these models to our data. We report on a new technique for polarization calibration using pulsars, as well as a new technique to remove broadband radio frequency interference. Our data indicate that, on the edges of the main beam at GMRT, polarization squint creates ~ 3% leakage of unpolarized power into polarized maps at zero rotation measure. We have observed a total of 67 pulsars at five frequencies ranging from 243 to 3100 MHz. Observations at the lower frequencies were made at the Giant Metre Wave Telescope in India and those at higher frequencies at the Parkes Telescope in Australia. We present profiles from 34 of the sample with the best signal to noise ratio and the least scattering. The general `rules' of pulsar profiles are seen in the data; profiles get narrower, the polarization fraction declines and outer components become more prominent as the frequency increases. Many counterexamples to these rules are also observed, and pulsars with complex profiles are especially prone to rule breaking. We hypothesise that the location of pulsar emission within the magnetosphere evolves with time as the the pulsar spins down. In highly energetic pulsars, the emission comes from a confined range of high altitudes, in the middle range of spin down energies the emission occurs over a wide range of altitudes whereas in pulsars with low spin-down energies it is confined to low down in the magnetosphere., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 15 pages

We present an overview for the reionization search at GMRT. The forecast sensitivities are promising for an early detection. RFI mitigation has been successful. PSR J0514-4002A is a 5-ms pulsar is located in the globular cluster NGC 1851; it belongs to a highly eccentric (e = 0.888) binary system. It is one of the earliest known examples of a numerous and fast-growing class of eccentric binary MSPs recently discovered in globular clusters. Using the GBT, we have obtained a phase-coherent timing solution for the pulsar, which includes a measurement of the rate of advance of periastron: 0.01289(4) degrees per year, which if due completely to general relativity, implies a total system mass of 2.453(14) solar masses. We also derive m_p < 1.5 solar masses and m_c > 0.96 solar masses. The companion is likely to be a massive white dwarf star., Comment: 3 pages, including 2 figures. We have used the Green Bank Telescope to observe the millisecond pulsar PSR J0514-4002A on 43 occasions spread over 2 years. This 5-ms pulsar is located in the globular cluster NGC 1851; it belongs to a binary system and has a highly eccentric (e = 0.888) orbit. We have obtained a phase-coherent timing solution for this object, including very precise position, spin and orbital parameters. The pulsar is located 4.6" (about 1.3 core radii) from the center of the cluster, and is likely to lie on its more distant half. The non-detection of eclipses at superior conjunction can be used, given the peculiar geometry of this system, to rule out the possibility of an extended companion. We have measured the rate of advance of periastron for this binary system to be $\dot{\omega}$ = 0.01289(4) degrees per year, which if due completely to general relativity, implies a total system mass of 2.453(14) solar masses. Given the known mass function, the pulsar mass has to be < 1.5 solar masses, and the mass of the companion has to be > 0.96 solar masses, implying that it is a heavy white dwarf. The 350-MHz flux density of this pulsar varies between 0.2 and 1.4 mJy; the origin of these variations is not known., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

In an earlier paper (Ahuja, et al, 2005), based on simultaneous multi-frequency observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), we reported the variation of pulsar dispersion measures (DMs) with frequency. A few different explanations are possible for such frequency dependence, and a possible candidate is the effect of pulse shape evolution on the DM estimation technique. In this paper we describe extensive simulations we have done to investigate the effect of pulse profile evolution on pulsar DM estimates. We find that it is only for asymmetric pulse shapes that the DM estimate is significantly affected due to profile evolution with frequency. Using multi-frequency data sets from our earlier observations, we have carried out systematic analyses of PSR B0329+54 and PSR B1642-03. Both these pulsars have central core dominated emission which does not show significant asymmetric profile evolution with frequency. Even so, we find that the estimated DM shows significant variation with frequency for these pulsars. We also report results from new, simultaneous multi-frequency observations of PSR B1133+16 carried out using the GMRT in phased array mode. This pulsar has an asymmetric pulse profile with significant evolution with frequency. We show that in such a case, amplitude of the observed DM variations can be attributed to profile evolution with frequency. We suggest that genuine DM variations with frequency could arise due to propagation effects through the interstellar medium and/or the pulsar magnetosphere., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables, to be published in MNRAS
