We study the transverse spin and the Belinfante spin momentum in a gain-loss balanced waveguide, known to be one of the first and most studied examples of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems. Such a guide supports the spectral singularities leading to infinite scattering amplitudes for both reflection and transmission. We show that near the spectral singularity there can be dramatic enhancement of the transverse spin and the transverse spin momentum. Note that these exotic spin and spin momentum have recently been observed experimentally despite having tiny magnitudes, making it worthy to explore ways and means to enhance these fundamentally important elusive quantities.

We study phase conjugation in a nonlinear composite slab when the counter propagating pump waves are completely absorbed by means of coherent perfect absorption. Under the undepleted pump approximation the coupling constant and the phase conjugated reflectivity are shown to undergo a substantial increase and multivalued response. The effect can be used for efficient switching of the phase conjugated reflectivity in photonic circuits.

We study theoretically the transverse spin associated with the eigenmodes of a thin metal film embedded in a dielectric. We show that the transverse spin has a direct dependence on the nature and strength of the coupling leading to two distinct branches for the long- and short- range modes. We show that the short-range mode exhibits larger extraordinary spin because of its more 'structured' nature due to higher decay in propagation. In contrast to some of the earlier studies, calculations are performed retaining the full lossy character of the metal. In the limit of vanishing losses we present analytical results for the extraordinary spin for both the coupled modes. The results can have direct implications for enhancing the elusive transverse spin exploiting the coupled plasmon structures.

We consider a symmetric gap plasmon guide (a folded Kretschmann configuration) supporting both symmeric and antisymmetric coupled surface plasmons. We calculate the transverse spin under illumination from both the sides like in coherent perfect absorption (CPA), whereby all the incident light can be absorbed to excite one of the modes of the structure. Significant enhancement in the transverse spin is shown to be possible when the CPA dip and the mode excitation are at the same frequency. The enhancement results from CPA-mediated total transfer of the incident light to either of the coupled modes and the associated large local fields. The transverse spin is localized in the structure since in the ambient dielectric there are only incident plane waves lacking any structure.

We review some of the recent concepts and their realization exploiting the perfect destructive interference of light in micro and nano structures. One refers to optical structures where the effective absorption can be controlled and maximized to perfect absorption. The reported effects depend crucially on the coherent nature of the exciting radiation. Achieved with a single (two or more) incident plane wave (waves) the effect carries the name of critical coupling (coherent perfect absorption). Thus in a system supporting critical coupling (CC) or coherent perfect absorption (CPA) all the incident radiation can be absorbed leading to null scattering. In particular all the incident light energy can be channeled into a specified mode of a multimodal structure if such modes are supported by the system. We present a brief overview of CC and CPA in linear systems to recount their underlying concepts as time-reversed lasing and some of their futuristic applications. Next we review our work on the nonlinear extensions of CC and CPA where one or more of the layered media could be nonlinear with Kerr-type nonlinearity. The dispersive nonlinearity is shown to offer a practical handle over the process of perfect absorption by incident laser power. Further we show that the nonlinear periodic structure can support gap solitons which absorbs all the incident energy and do not scatter any light outside the hetero-guide

We study theoretically a PT-symmetric saturable balanced gain-loss system in a ring cavity configuration. The saturable gain and loss are modeled by two-level medium with or without population inversion. We show that the specifics of the spectral singularity can be fully controlled by the cavity and the atomic detuning parameters. The theory is based on the mean-field approximation as in standard theory of optical bistability. Further, in the linear regime we demonstrate the regularization of the singularity in detuned systems, while larger input power levels are shown to be adequate to limit the infinite growth in absence of detuning

The longitudinal and the transverse beam shifts, namely, the Goos-H\"anchen (GH) and the Spin-Hall (SH) shifts are usually observed at planar interfaces. It has recently been shown that the transverse SH shift may also arise due to scattering of plane waves. Here, we show that analogous in-plane (longitudinal) shift also exist in scattering of plane waves from micro/nano systems. We study both the GH and the SH shifts in plasmonic metal nanoparticles/ nanostructures and dielectric micro-particles employing a unified framework that utilizes the transverse components of the Poynting vector of the scattered wave. The results demonstrate that interference of neighboring resonance modes in plasmonic nanostructures (e.g., electric dipolar and quadrupolar modes in metal spheres) leads to giant enhancement of GH shift in scattering from such systems. We also unravel interesting correlations between these shifts with the polarimetry parameters, diattenuation and retardance., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We study excitation of gap solitons under the conditions of coherent perfect absorption (CPA). Our system consists of a symmetric periodic structure with alternating Kerr nonlinear and linear layers, illuminated from both the ends. We show near-total transfer of incident light energy into the gap solitons resulting in null-scattering. We also report on the nonlinear super-scattering (SS) states. Both the CPA and the SS states are shown to be characterized by typical field distributions. Both the exact and the approximate results (based on nonlinear characteristic matrix method) are presented, which show good agreement.

We report perfect two photon quantum interference with near-unity visibility in a resonant tunneling plasmonic structure in folded Kretschmann geometry. This is despite absorption-induced loss of unitarity in plasmonic systems. The effect is traced to perfect destructive interference between the squares of amplitude reflection and transmission coefficients. We further highlight yet another remarkable potential of coincidence measurements as a probe with better resolution as compared to standard spectroscopic techniques. Reflectionless potentials (RPs) represent a class of potentials that offer total transmission in the context of one dimensional scattering. Optical realization of RPs in stratified medium can exhibit broadband omnidirectional antireflection property. In addition to the antireflection property, RPs are also expected to demonstrate negative delay. We designed refractive index profiles conforming to RPs and realize them in stratified media consisting of Al2O3 and TiO2 heterolayers. In these structures we observed < 1% reflection over the broad wavelength range of 350 nm to 2500 nm for angles of incidence 0 - 50 degrees. The observed reflection and transmission response of RPs are polarization independent. A negative delay of about 31 fsec with discernible pulse narrowing was observed in passage through two RPs. These RPs can be interesting for optical instrumentation as broadband, omni-directional antireflection coatings as well as in pulse control and transmission applications like delay lines., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We study coherent perfect absorption (CPA) of light in a Kerr nonlinear metal-dielectric composite medium, illuminated from the opposite ends. Elementary symmetry considerations reveal that equality of the incident light intensities is a prerequisite to ensure CPA in both linear and nonlinear systems for specific system parameters. We also derive the sufficient conditions for having CPA. We further show that while CPA in a linear system is insensitive to the incident power level, that in a nonlinear system can be achieved only for discrete intensities with interesting hysteretic response. Our unified formulation of CPA and waveguiding identifies them as opposite scattering phenomena. We study a critically coupled system (Opt. Lett., \textbf{32}, 1483 (2007)) with a Kerr-nonlinear spacer layer. Nonlinearity is shown to inhibit null-scattering in a critically coupled system at low powers. However, a system detuned from critical coupling can exhibit near-complete suppression of scattering by means of nonlinearity-induced changes in refractive index. Our studies reveal clearly an important aspect of critical coupling as a delicate balance in both the amplitude and the phase relations, while a nonlinear resonance in dispersive bistability concerns only the phase.

The spin orbit interactions (SOI) of light mediated by single scattering from plasmon resonant metal nanoparticles (nanorods and nanospheres) are investigated using explicit theory based on Jones and Stokes-Mueller polarimetry formalism. The individual SOI effects are analyzed and interpreted via the Mueller matrix-derived, polarimetry characteristics, namely, diattenuation d and retardance {\delta}. The results demonstrate that each of the contributing SOI effects can be controllably enhanced by exploiting the interference of two neighboring modes in plasmonic nanostructures (orthogonal electric dipolar modes in rods or electric dipolar and quadrupolar modes in spheres)., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We show anti-crossings due to strong in-plane coupling of plasmon modes in dielectric-metal-dielectric structure with top 2D dielectric pattern. Experimentally measured anti-crossing widths are compared with those calculated by coupled mode theory. We demonstrate bending of light on the same side of the normal in a free standing corrugated metal film under bi-directional illumination. Coherent perfect absorption (CPA) is exploited to suppress the specular zeroth order leading to effective back-bending of light into the `-1' order, while the `+1' order is resonant with the surface mode. Omni-directional light coupling to surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes to make use of plasmon mediated near-field enhancement is challenging. We report possibility of near dispersion-less modes in structures with unpatterned metal-dielectric interfaces having 2-D dielectric patterns on top. We show that the position and dispersion of the excited modes can be controlled by the excitation geometry and the 2-D pattern. We exploit the versatility provided by metal--dielectric composites to demonstrate controllable coherent perfect absorption (CPA) in a slab of heterogeneous medium. The slab is illuminated by coherent light from both sides, at the same angle of incidence and the conditions required for CPA are investigated as a function of the different geometrical parameters. The simultaneous realization of CPA at two distinct frequencies is also shown. Micro-particle self assembly under the influence of optical forces produced by higher order optical beams or by projection of a hologram into the trapping volume is well known. In this paper, we report the spontaneous formation of a ring of identical microspheres (each with diameter 1.1 $\mu$m) in conventional single beam optical tweezers with a usual TEM$_{00}$ Gaussian beam coupled into a sample chamber having standing wave geometry with a cover slip and glass slide. The effects of different experimental parameters on the ring formation are studied extensively. The experimental observations are backed by theoretical simulations based on a plane wave decomposition of the forward and backward propagating Gaussian beams. The ring patterns are shown to be caused due to geomterical aberrations produced by focusing the Gaussian beam using a high numerical aperture microscope objective into stratified media. It is found that the thickness of the stratified media and the standing wave geometry itself play a critical role in formation of stable ring structures. These structures could be used in the study of optical binding, as well as biological interactions between cells in an optical trap., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures

We study giant Goos-H\"anchen (GH) shift in reflection from a near-symmetric coupled waveguide structure. We show that broken spatial symmetry can lead to GH shift with different signs for illumination from the opposite ends, a direct consequence of the nonreciprocity relations considered earlier (Opt. Lett. 27,1205 (2002)). Symmetry breaking by adding a few nm thick bio-layer to one of the guides is enough to observe the nonreciprocity. This may have far reaching implications for efficient biosensing.

We show efficient electro-optic modulation in a subwavelength gap-plasmon waveguide (GPW) formed by an electro-optic polymer with metal coatings. The proposed device is studied in the attenuated total reflection and end-fire configurations. In dealing with the end-fire configuration we used a taper from a micron sized guide to the GPW. We study a critically coupled cavity doped with resonant atoms with metamaterial slabs as mirrors. We show how resonant atom-cavity interaction can lead to a splitting of the critical coupling dip. We study resonant tunneling through a layered medium with a negative index medium (NIM) slab as a constituent layer. We demonstrate large delays in transmission mediated by the surface and the guided modes of the structure with low losses. We show how important it is to include NIM dispersion for correct assessment of the nature and magnitude of the delay. We consider pulse propagation through a two component composite medium (metal inclusions in a dielectric host) with or without cavity mirrors. We show that a very thin slab of such a medium, under conditions of localized plasmon resonance, can lead to significant superluminality with detectable levels of transmitted pulse. A cavity containing the heterogeneous medium is shown to lead to subluminal-to-superluminal transmission depending on the volume fraction of the metal inclusions. The predictions of phase time calculations are verified by explicit calculations of the transmitted pulse shapes. We study phonon-mediated transitions between translational levels of an atom in a surface-induced potential. We present a general master equation governing the dynamics of the translational states of the atom. In the framework of the Debye model, we derive compact expressions for the rates for both upward and downward transitions. Numerical calculations for the transition rates are performed for a deep silica-induced potential allowing for a large number of bound levels as well as free states of a cesium atom. The total absorption rate is shown to be determined mainly by the bound-to-bound transitions for deep bound levels and by bound-to-free transitions for shallow bound levels. Moreover, the phonon emission and absorption processes can be orders of magnitude larger for deep bound levels as compared to the shallow bound ones. We also study various types of transitions from free states. We show that, for thermal atomic cesium with temperature in the range from 100 $\mu$K to 400 $\mu$K in the vicinity of a silica surface with temperature of 300 K, the adsorption (free-to-bound decay) rate is about two times larger than the heating (free-to-free upward decay) rate, while the cooling (free-to-free downward decay) rate is negligible., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures

We study the optical excitation spectrum of an atom in the vicinity of a dielectric surface. We calculate the rates of the total scattering and the scattering into the evanescent modes. With a proper assessment of the limitations, we demonstrate the portability of the flat-surface results to an experimental situation with a nanofiber. The effect of the surface-induced potential on the excitation spectrum for free-to-bound transitions is shown to be weak. On the contrary, the effect for bound-to-bound transitions is significant leading to a large excitation linewidth, a substantial negative shift of the peak position, and a strong long tail on the negative side and a small short tail on the positive side of the field--atom frequency detuning.

We examine the feasibility of enhancing the fundamental radiative interactions between distant atoms. We present general arguments for producing enhancement. In particular, we show how giant dipole-dipole interaction can be produced by considering dipoles placed close to micron sized silica spheres.
