18. Lost in the Perilous Boulevards of Gig Economy: Making of Human Drones

Abstract

Along with advancements in information technology and related infrastructure, the gig economy is expanding to more and more cities in the world. In emerging economies like India, due to increasing urbanisation and Internet connectivity, many services are being delivered through technology platforms, and their numbers are growing fast. However, not much is known about the impact of app-based employment on the workers. The online food delivery sector is a suitable segment to probe the same. How vulnerable is this ever-dispensable food delivery employee in his monotonous job? These workers are employed under the mobile apps that control them like in a sci-fi game. What does it mean to be constantly under the mobile app surveillance? Does the flexibilityof the gig economy impact the skills and aspirations of these boys? Does it dehumanise the workers and transform them into human drones? This study maps the lived experience of food delivery boys and their families, which has so far remained behind the celebrated success of the platform economy in India. Using both interview and participant observation methods to study gig workers and deploying dimensional analysis to unpack the context, this study finds evidence of unobtrusive dehumanisation. Given the mushrooming trend of such gig workers, the findings of this study call for a deeper analysis of the social impact of the gig economy and have far-reaching implications.

Abstract

Failure of asphalt concrete in repeated loading tests could be due to fatigue or due to creep of the material. In this study, the effect of creep on the damage of asphalt concrete in these tests was investigated. Stress-controlled repeated loading tests were conducted in uniaxial tension at different frequencies. A different stress amplitude was chosen for each frequency so that the initial average stored energy in a cycle remains constant. Results indicate that the tensile creep of asphalt concrete can have a considerable effect on the damage and failure of specimens. The variations of the apparent dynamic modulus and phase angle, and the total dissipation per cycle with time, when appropriately normalised, were found to be nearly independent of the frequency of the test. In addition, the dissipation of energy in these tests that is related to the damage of the material was further evaluated. Several techniques have been suggested in the literature for the calculation of damage-related dissipation. The suitability of these techniques was analysed using the results of the study. The dissipated creep strain energy (DCSE) was found to provide the most accurate characterisation of damage-related dissipation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

31. Public Service Motivation in India: Assessing, Refining, and Validating a Revised Conceptualization.

Abstract

Globally, the examination of Public Service Motivation (PSM) has been instrumental in understanding how the attitudes and values of public servants shape the outcomes and efficacy of social welfare through public institutions. The construct of PSM offers a lens to assess and enhance the alignment between public servants' motivations and the objectives of public institutions. Yet research on PSM in the Indian context is conspicuously deficient as existing PSM frameworks and instruments, derived from Western-centric studies, do not adequately capture the cultural, economic, and administrative nuances that characterize the Indian public service. Consequently, there is a pressing need to investigate and measure the concept of PSM in India. In four studies, we re-examine the construct of PSM in the local context and develop a valid measure for it, identifying three unique dimensions - job security and growth, power to create change and social respect. The study contributes to the scholarly discourse on Public Service Motivation (PSM), laying groundwork for researchers in the Indian subcontinent to develop and empirically validate more refined theories of public administration.
