Abstract

Model-derived estimates of the annually integrated destruction and lifetime for various ozone depleting substances (ODSs) depend on the simulated stratospheric transport and mixing in the global model used to produce the estimate. Observations in the middle and high latitude lower stratosphere show that the mean age of an air parcel (i.e., the time since its stratospheric entry) is related to the fractional release for the ODs (i.e., the amount of the ODS that has been destroyed relative to the amount at the time of stratospheric entry). We use back trajectory calculations to produce an age spectrum, and explain the relationship between the mean age and the fractional release by showing that older elements in the age spectrum have experienced higher altitudes and greater ODs destruction than younger elements. In our study, models with faster circulations produce distributions for the age-of-air that are 'young' compared to a distribution derived from observations. These models also fail to reproduce the observed relationship between the mean age of air and the fractional release. Models with slower circulations produce both realistic distributions for mean age and a realistic relationship between mean age and fractional release. These models also produce a CFCl3 lifetime of approximately 56 years, longer than the 45 year lifetime used to project future mixing ratios. We find that the use of flux boundary conditions in assessment models would have several advantages, including consistency between ODS evolution and simulated loss even if the simulated residual circulation changes due to climate change.

18. A comparative study of Olopatadine and Ketorolac eye drop with Ketorolac eye drop alone in seasonal allergic conjunctivitis

Abstract

Background: Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis is the most common allergic disorder seen in eyes. The aim of study was to compare the clinical efficacy of combination of 0.4% ketorolac and 0.1% olopatadine with 0.4% ketorolac alone in seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. Material and Method: The study was prospective, double blind parallel group comparative. Two hundred cases enrolled in the study. All the subjects were randomly divided in two groups, 100 in each. Group 1 patients received 0.4% ketorolac eye drop in both eyes 2 times a day and group 2 patients received combination of 0.1% olopatadine and 0.4% ketorolac in both eyes 2 times a day. Observations were collected at baseline and on day 3,7,15 and analyzed statistically regarding improvement in sign and symptoms. Result: In group 1, 50- 60% patients had no sign and symptoms on day 15 whereas in group 2 more than 95% patients showed improvement in clinical picture. p value was significant (p<0.0001) at day 15 in all sign and symptoms and on day 3 in itching and on day 7 in watering. Overall group 2 patients had better and earlier response regarding symptoms of itching at day 3. Conclusion: The combination of 0.1% olopatadine and 0.4% ketorolac was more effective than 0.4% ketorolac alone in seasonal allergic conjunctivitis patients.

21. Clinical comparison of 0.6% besifloxacin ophthalmic suspension and 1.5% azithromycin ophthalmic suspension in acute bacterial conjunctivitis

Abstract

Introduction: Acute bacterial conjunctivitis is one of the most common ocular infection seen in day to day clinical practice. Our purpose to conduct this study was to compare the outcome and efficacy of 0.6% besifloxacin ophthalmic suspension and 1.5% azithromycin ophthalmic suspension in acute bacterial conjunctivitis. Method: This is a Prospective, randomized, parallel-group, clinical study of acute bacterial conjunctivitis Conducted From July 2015 to Sept 2015 on 200 patients in the department of Ophthalmology at Jhalawar Medical College, Jhalawar.(raj.) All selected patients were divided into two groups of 100 each. Group A was treated by besifloxacin 0.6% ophthalmic suspension,where as group B was treated by 1.5% azithromycin ophthalmic suspension three times a day for 7 day. Observation was done on 3, 7 day regarding clinical resolution and side effect of these drugs in both groups. Result: Clinical resolution, complication , and side effects of these two drugs were analysed on day 3 and day 7 and found that 0.6% besifloxacin is significantly better than 1.5% azithromycin eye drop on day 3 and day 7 (p value<0.5) and also have less side effect (p value<0.5). Conclusion: 0.6% besifloxacin is safe and efficacious in acute bacterial conjunctivitis in all age group.

Abstract

Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) is a rare, small-vessel vasculitis associated with a prominent allergic component, asthma, and blood or tissue eosinophilia. Granulomas, eosinophils, and palisading histiocytes in extravascular tissues are hallmarks of this disorder. The presence of asthma or allergy as well as more than 10% of eosinophils in blood is 95% sensitive and 99% specific, respectively, in distinguishing CSS among a subgroup of patients with well-documented systemic vasculitis. Abstract

This study is aimed at the development of a safe radioprotective formulation to minimize human sufferings during accidental nuclear exposures. In the current study, a combination of three active principles, namely podophyllotoxin, podophyllotoxin beta-D-glucoside, and rutin (G-002M), isolated from Podophyllum hexandrum rhizomes, has been evaluated for its radioprotective potential and mode of action. Total body protection studies have demonstrated that a single prophylactic dose of G-002M delivered more than 85% survival in mice exposed to a lethal (9 Gy) dose of gamma radiation, and significantly protected the radiosensitive hematopoietic and gastrointestinal organs. Studies have also revealed a reduction in free radical generation, lipid peroxidation, protein carbonylation, and cell death in mouse intestine after G-002M treatment, while GSH was observed to be enhanced in the same tissue. Redox-sensitive transcription factor (Nrf2) activation and subsequent upregulation of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and SOD-1 revealed the cytoprotective role of G-002M. A histological examination of the jejunum pretreated with the formulation also demonstrated less damage to the villi, crypts, and the mucosal layers. These observations reiterated that the reduction in the ROS levels, protection of cellular macromolecules, and activation of the antioxidant signaling pathway may have been the principle factors involved in G-002M- mediated protection against radiation-induced tissue impairment.
