Two-year results are presented.Patients and Methods: Forty-eight participants were randomly assigned to IFD or decompression. Primary study endpoints included changes from baseline at 8-weeks, 6, 12 and 24-months follow-ups for leg pain (visual analogue scale, VAS), back pain (VAS), disability (Oswestry Disability Index, ODI), LSS physical function (Zurich Claudication Questionnaire), distance walked in five minutes and number of repetitions of sitting-to-standing in one minute. Secondary study endpoints included patient and clinician global impression of change, adverse events, reoperations, operating parameters, and fusion rate.Results: Both treatment groups demonstrated statistically significant improvements in mean leg pain, back pain, ODI disability, LSS physical function, walking distance and sitting-to-standing repetitions compared to baseline over 24 months. Mean reduction of ODI from baseline levels was between 35% and 56% for IFD (p< 0.002), and 49% to 55% for decompression (p< 0.001) for all follow-up time points. Mean reduction of IFD group leg pain was between 57% and 78% for all time points (p< 0.001), with 72% to 94% of participants having at least 30% reduction of leg pain from 8-weeks through 24-months. Walking distance for the IFD group increased from 66% to 94% and sitting-to-standing repetitions increased from 44% to 64% for all follow-up time points. Blood loss was 88% less in the IFD group (p=0.024) and operating time parameters strongly favoured IFD compared to decompression (p< 0.001). An 89% fusion rate was assessed in a subset of IFD participants. There were no intraoperative device issues or re-operations in the IFD group, and only one healed and non-symptomatic spinous process fracture observed within 24 months.Conclusion: Despite a low number of participants in the IFD group, the study demonstrated successful two-year safety and clinical outcomes for the IFD with significant operation-related advantages compared to surgical decompression.Keywords: lumbar spinal stenosis, surgical decompression, posterior lateral arthrodesis, patient reported outcomes, minimally invasive spine, interspinous fixation device

Abstract

We report the detection of magnesium dicarbide, MgC$_2$, in the laboratory at centimeter wavelengths and assign $^{24}$MgC$_2$, $^{25}$MgC$_2$, and $^{26}$MgC$_2$ to 14 unidentified lines in the radio spectrum of the circumstellar envelope of the evolved carbon star IRC+10216. The structure of MgC$_2$ is found to be T-shaped with a highly ionic bond between the metal atom and the C$_2$ unit, analogous to other dicarbides containing electropositive elements. A two-temperature excitation model of the MgC$_2$ emission lines observed in IRC+10216 yields a very low rotational temperature of $6\pm1$ K, a kinetic temperature of $22\pm13$ K, and a column density of $(1.0 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$. The abundance of MgC$_2$ relative to the magnesium-carbon chains MgCCH, MgC$_4$H, and MgC$_6$H is $1{:}2{:}22{:}20$ and provides a new constraint on the sequential radiative association-dissociative recombination mechanisms implicated in the production of metal-bearing molecules in circumstellar environments., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Introduction: Both knotted all suture anchors and metal anchors are used for arthroscopic Bankart repair. We retrospectively evaluated and compared clinical and functional outcomes after arthroscopic Bankart repair using the knotted all-suture anchors and knotted metal anchors. Materials and methods: In a retrospective cohort analysis, patients who underwent arthroscopic Bankart repair without any concomitant additional lesion repair using either all-suture anchors or metal anchors, between January 2015 and May 2018 were identified. Their pre- and post-operative functional and clinical outcomes were compared using Rowe and WOSI scores. The recurrence rate in the two groups was also compared. Results: A total of 41 patients in all suture anchors group and 47 in the metal anchors group were identified as per inclusion and exclusion criteria. The demographic profile of both groups was comparable. There was no significant difference in clinical and functional outcome between the two suture anchor groups as per Rowe (pre-operative 40.13+6.51 vs 38.09+6.24 and post-operative 2 years 93.28+7.09 vs 92.55+9.2) and WOSI (pre-operative 943.05+216.64 vs 977.55+165.46 and post-operative 2 years 278.21+227.56 vs 270.94+186.25) scores. Abstract

We describe the outcome of a data challenge conducted as part of the Dark Machines Initiative and the Les Houches 2019 workshop on Physics at TeV colliders. The challenged aims at detecting signals of new physics at the LHC using unsupervised machine learning algorithms. First, we propose how an anomaly score could be implemented to define model-independent signal regions in LHC searches. We define and describe a large benchmark dataset, consisting of >1 Billion simulated LHC events corresponding to $10~\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. We then review a wide range of anomaly detection and density estimation algorithms, developed in the context of the data challenge, and we measure their performance in a set of realistic analysis environments. We draw a number of useful conclusions that will aid the development of unsupervised new physics searches during the third run of the LHC, and provide our benchmark dataset for future studies at https://www.phenoMLdata.org. Abstract

Near surface silver nanoparticles embedded in silicon oxide were obtained by 40 keV silver negative ion implantation without the requirement of an annealing step. Ion beam induced local heating within the film leads to an exo-diffusion of the silver ions towards the film surface resulting in the protrusion of larger nanoparticles. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM) reveals the presence of poly-disperse nanoparticles (NPs), ranging between 2 nm-20 nm, at different depths of the SiO2 film. The normal incidence reflectance spectrum shows a double kink feature in the vicinity of 400nm, indicating a strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) from the embedded NPs. However, due to overlap of the bilayer interference and LSPR, the related features are difficult to separate. The ambiguity in associating the correct kink with the LSPR related absorption is cleared with the use of transfer matrix simulations in combination with an effective medium approximation. The simulations are further verified with angle dependent reflectance measurements. Additionally, transfer matrix simulation is also used to calculate the electric field intensity profile through the depth of the film, wherein an enhanced electric field intensity is predicted at the surface of the implanted films., Comment: 9 pages,5 figures

Abstract

In 3GPP the architecture of a New Radio Access Network (New RAN) has been defined where the evolved NodeB (eNB) functions can be split between a Distributed Unit (DU) and Central Unit (CU). Furthermore, in the virtual RAN (VRAN) approach, such functions can be virtualized (e.g., in simple terms, deployed in virtual machines). Based on the split type, different performance in terms of capacity and latency are requested to the network (i.e., fronthaul) connecting DU and CU. This study experimentally evaluates, in the 5G segment of the Advanced Research on NetwOrking (ARNO) testbed (ARNO-5G), the fronthaul latency requirements specified by Standard Developing Organizations (SDO) (3GPP in this specific case). Moreover it evaluates how much virtualization impacts the fronthaul latency budget for the the Option 7-1 functional split. The obtained results show that, in the considered Option 7-1 functional split, the fronthaul latency requirements are about 250us but they depend on the radio channel bandwidth and the number of the connected UEs. Abstract

Ion implantation was employed for the growth of embedded silver nanoparticles (NPs) in amorphous hydrogenated silicon nitride (a-SiNx:H) thin films. Crystalline nanoparticles are found to grow in the as-implanted samples without the requirement of an annealing step. The NPs exhibit absorption due to Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR). The LSPR peak position, width and intensity, are found depend on the stoichiometry of a-SiNx:H and the implantation energy. A maximum LSPR red shift from 390 nm to 470 nm was obtained with changes in the composition of the host medium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
