Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
A counterclockwise hysteresis is observed at room temperature in the transfer characteristics of SrTiO$_3$ (STO) gated MoS$_2$ field effect transistor (FET) and attributed to bistable dipoles on the STO surface. The hysteresis is expectedly found to increase with increasing range, as well as decreasing rate, of the gate-voltage sweep. The hysteresis peaks near 350 K while the transconductance rises with rising temperature above the room temperature. This is attributed to a blocking transition arising from an interplay of thermal energy and an energy-barrier that separates the two dipole states. The dipoles are discussed in terms of the displacement of the puckered oxygen ions at the STO surface. Finally, the blocking enables a control on the threshold gate-voltage of the FET over a wide range at low temperature which demonstrates it as a heat assisted memory device., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Motion time series collected from mobile and wearable devices such as smartphones and smartwatches offer significant insights into human behavioral patterns, with wide applications in healthcare, automation, IoT, and AR/XR due to their low-power, always-on nature. However, given security and privacy concerns, building large-scale motion time series datasets remains difficult, preventing the development of pre-trained models for human activity analysis. Typically, existing models are trained and tested on the same dataset, leading to poor generalizability across variations in device location, device mounting orientation and human activity type. In this paper, we introduce UniMTS, the first unified pre-training procedure for motion time series that generalizes across diverse device latent factors and activities. Specifically, we employ a contrastive learning framework that aligns motion time series with text descriptions enriched by large language models. This helps the model learn the semantics of time series to generalize across activities. Given the absence of large-scale motion time series data, we derive and synthesize time series from existing motion skeleton data with all-joint coverage. Spatio-temporal graph networks are utilized to capture the relationships across joints for generalization across different device locations. We further design rotation-invariant augmentation to make the model agnostic to changes in device mounting orientations. Our model shows exceptional generalizability across 18 motion time series classification benchmark datasets, outperforming the best baselines by 340% in the zero-shot setting, 16.3% in the few-shot setting, and 9.2% in the full-shot setting., Comment: NeurIPS 2024. Computer Science - Cryptography and Security - Abstract
Large Language Model (LLM) Agents are an emerging computing paradigm that blends generative machine learning with tools such as code interpreters, web browsing, email, and more generally, external resources. These agent-based systems represent an emerging shift in personal computing. We contribute to the security foundations of agent-based systems and surface a new class of automatically computed obfuscated adversarial prompt attacks that violate the confidentiality and integrity of user resources connected to an LLM agent. We show how prompt optimization techniques can find such prompts automatically given the weights of a model. We demonstrate that such attacks transfer to production-level agents. For example, we show an information exfiltration attack on Mistral's LeChat agent that analyzes a user's conversation, picks out personally identifiable information, and formats it into a valid markdown command that results in leaking that data to the attacker's server. This attack shows a nearly 80% success rate in an end-to-end evaluation. We conduct a range of experiments to characterize the efficacy of these attacks and find that they reliably work on emerging agent-based systems like Mistral's LeChat, ChatGLM, and Meta's Llama. These attacks are multimodal, and we show variants in the text-only and image domains., Comment: website: https://imprompter.ai code: https://github.com/Reapor-Yurnero/imprompter v2 changelog: add new results to Table 3, correct several typos

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. These represent the strictest upper limits on concurrent GW emission from FRBs., Comment: 15 pages of text including references, 4 figures, 5 tables

Quantum Physics - Abstract
Future distributed quantum systems and networks are likely to rely, at least in part, on the existing fiber infrastructure for entanglement distribution; hence, a precise understanding of the adverse effects of imperfections in optical fibers on entanglement is essential to their operation. Here, we consider maximally entangled polarization qubits and study the decay of the entanglement caused by spatial fluctuations in the refractive index of optical fibers. We study this entanglement dynamics using the spin-boson model and numerically solve our system of equations using the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) formalism. We show that within the range of practically relevant system parameters, our developed model exhibits both Markovian and non-Markovian entanglement decay behavior. Further, to counter the observed entanglement decay, we propose the implementation of dynamical decoupling in optical fibers using spaced half waveplates. In particular, we numerically model the time-dependent Hamiltonians of the Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill and Uhrig dynamical decoupling schemes and show a reduced rate of entanglement decay even with sparsely spaced half waveplates along the length of optical fiber. Finally, we evaluate the performance of these two schemes in multiple system configurations., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

The anisotropic light-matter interactions in 2D materials have garnered significant attention for their potential to develop futuristic polarization-based optoelectronic devices, such as photodetectors and photo-actuators. In this study, we investigate the polarization-dependent interactions in ferroelectric 3R alpha-In2Se3 using Angle-Resolved Polarized Raman Spectroscopy (ARPRS) with different excitation lasers. Our experimental findings supported by complementary Density Functional Theory calculations demonstrate that the light-matter interactions depend not only on the crystallographic orientation but also on the excitation energy. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) confirms the highly anisotropic 3R crystal structure of alpha-In2Se3. This anisotropy in crystal structure facilitates significant optical anisotropy, driven by a complex interplay of electron-photon and electron-phonon interactions, which is reflected in the complex nature of the Raman tensor elements. These anisotropy interactions extend to the materials electrical response under light illumination. Remarkably, the anisotropic photo-response can be tuned by both polarization and wavelength of the incident light, making In2Se3 a promising material for advanced polarization-sensitive photodetection applications., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, supporting information

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
We analyze the Spitzer spectra of 140 active galactic nuclei (AGN) detected in the hard X-rays (14-195 keV) by the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on board Swift. This sample allows us to probe several orders of magnitude in black hole masses ($10^6-10^9 M_{\odot}$), Eddington ratios ($10^{-3}-1$), X-ray luminosities ($10^{42}-10^{45}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$), and X-ray column densities ($10^{20}-10^{24}\rm\,cm^{-2}$). The AGN emission is expected to be the dominant source of ionizing photons with energies $\gtrsim50$ eV, and therefore high-ionization mid-infrared (MIR) emission lines such as [Ne V] 14.32, 24.32 $\mu$m and [O IV] 25.89 $\mu$m are predicted to be good proxies of AGN activity, and robust against obscuration effects. We find high detection rates ($\gtrsim85-90$ per cent) for the mid-infrared coronal emission lines in our AGN sample. The luminosities of these lines are correlated with the 14-150 keV luminosity (with a typical scatter of $\sigma \sim 0.4-0.5$ dex), strongly indicating that the mid-infrared coronal line emission is driven by AGN activity. Interestingly, we find that the coronal lines are more tightly correlated to the bolometric luminosity ($\sigma \sim 0.2-0.3$ dex), calculated from careful analysis of the spectral energy distribution, than to the X-ray luminosity. We find that the relationship between the coronal line strengths and $L_{14-150\rm\,keV}$ is independent of black hole mass, Eddington ratio and X-ray column density. This confirms that the mid-infrared coronal lines can be used as unbiased tracers of the AGN power for X-ray luminosities in the $10^{42}-10^{45}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$ range., Comment: ApJ in press

In hypothesis testing with quantum states, given a black box containing one of the two possible states, measurement is performed to detect in favor of one of the hypotheses. In postselected hypothesis testing, a third outcome is added, corresponding to not selecting any of the hypotheses. In postselected scenario, minimum error one-shot symmetric hypothesis testing is characterized in literature conditioned on the fact that one of the selected outcomes occur. We proceed further in this direction to give the set of all possible measurements that lead to the minimum error. We have given an arbitrary error-minimizing measurement in a parametric form. Note that not selecting any of the hypotheses decimates the quality of testing. We further give an example to show that these measurements vary in quality. There is a need to discuss the quality of postselected hypothesis testing. We then characterize the quality of postselected hypothesis testing by defining a new metric acceptance and give expression of acceptance for an arbitrary error-minimizing measurement in terms of some parameters of the measurement. On the set of measurements that achieve minimum error, we have maximized the acceptance, and given an example which achieves that, thus giving an example of the best possible measurement in terms of acceptance.

The discovery of superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure has motivated the investigation of a parent spin density wave (SDW) state which could provide the underlying pairing interaction. Here, we employ resonant soft x-ray scattering and polarimetry on thin films of bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ to determine that the magnetic structure of the SDW forms unidirectional diagonal spin stripes with moments lying within the NiO$_2$ plane and perpendicular to $\mathbf{Q}_{SDW}$, but without the strong charge disproportionation typically associated with other nickelates. These stripes form anisotropic domains with shorter correlation lengths perpendicular versus parallel to $\mathbf{Q}_{SDW}$, revealing nanoscale rotational and translational symmetry breaking analogous to the cuprate and Fe-based superconductors, with Bloch-like antiferromagnetic domain walls separating orthogonal domains., Comment: 30 pages including supplementary, 4 figures + 9 supplementary figures

Computer Science - Hardware Architecture - Abstract
Ternary Deep Neural Networks (DNN) have shown a large potential for highly energy-constrained systems by virtue of their low power operation (due to ultra-low precision) with only a mild degradation in accuracy. To enable an energy-efficient hardware substrate for such systems, we propose a compute-enabled memory design, referred to as SiTe-CiM, which features computing-in-memory (CiM) of dot products between signed ternary (SiTe) inputs and weights. SiTe CiM is based on cross-coupling of two bit cells to enable CiM of dot products in the signed ternary regime. We explore SiTe CiM with 8T-SRAM, 3T-embedded DRAM (3T-eDRAM) and 3T-ferroelectric metal FET (FEMFET) memories. We propose two flavors of this technique, namely SiTe CiM I/II. In SiTe CiM I, we employ two additional transistors per cell for cross-coupling, achieving fast CiM operations, albeit incurring an area overhead ranging from 18% to 34% (compared to standard ternary memories). In SiTe CiM II, four extra transistors are utilized for every 16 cells in a column, thereby incurring only 6% area cost (but leading to slower CiM than SiTe CiM I). Based on the array analysis, our designs achieve up to 88% lower CiM latency and 78% CiM energy savings across various technologies considered, as compared to their respective near-memory computing counterparts. Further, we perform system level analysis by incorporating SiTe CiM I/II arrays in a ternary DNN accelerator and show up to 7X throughput boost and up to 2.5X energy reduction compared to the near-memory ternary DNN accelerators.

Superconductor-to-metal transition with magnetic field and gate-voltage is studied in a Josephson junction array comprising of randomly distributed lead islands on exfoliated single-layer graphene with a back-gate. The low magnetic-field superconductivity onset temperature is fitted to the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg theory to model the temperature dependence of the upper critical field. The magnetoresistance in the intermediate temperature and field regime is described using thermally activated flux flow dictated by field dependent activation barrier. The barrier also depends on the gate voltage which dictates the inter-island Josephson coupling and disorder. The magnetoresistance near the upper critical field at low temperatures shows signatures of a gate dependent continuous quantum phase transition between superconductor and metal. The finite size scaling analysis shows that this transition belongs to the $(2+1)$D-XY universality class without disorder., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Control affine assumptions, human inputs are external disturbances, in certified safe controller synthesis approaches are frequently violated in operational deployment under causal human actions. This paper takes a human-in-the-loop human-in-the-plant (HIL-HIP) approach towards ensuring operational safety of safety critical autonomous systems: human and real world controller (RWC) are modeled as a unified system. A three-way interaction is considered: a) through personalized inputs and biological feedback processes between HIP and HIL, b) through sensors and actuators between RWC and HIP, and c) through personalized configuration changes and data feedback between HIL and RWC. We extend control Lyapunov theory by generating barrier function (CLBF) under human action plans, model the HIL as a combination of Markov Chain for spontaneous events and Fuzzy inference system for event responses, the RWC as a black box, and integrate the HIL-HIP model with neural architectures that can learn CLBF certificates. We show that synthesized HIL-HIP controller for automated insulin delivery in Type 1 Diabetes is the only controller to meet safety requirements for human action inputs., Comment: Design Automation Conference 2024 Work in progress paper

Crossbar memory arrays have been touted as the workhorse of in-memory computing (IMC)-based acceleration of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), but the associated hardware non-idealities limit their efficacy. To address this, cross-layer design solutions that reduce the impact of hardware non-idealities on DNN accuracy are needed. In Part 1 of this paper, we established the co-optimization strategies for various memory technologies and their crossbar arrays, and conducted a comparative technology evaluation in the context of IMC robustness. In this part, we analyze various design knobs such as array size and bit-slice (number of bits per device) and their impact on the performance of 8T SRAM, ferroelectric transistor (FeFET), Resistive RAM (ReRAM) and spin-orbit-torque magnetic RAM (SOT-MRAM) in the context of inference accuracy at 7nm technology node. Further, we study the effect of circuit design solutions such as Partial Wordline Activation (PWA) and custom ADC reference levels that reduce the hardware non-idealities and comparatively analyze the response of each technology to such accuracy enhancing techniques. Our results on ResNet-20 (with CIFAR-10) show that PWA increases accuracy by up to 32.56% while custom ADC reference levels yield up to 31.62% accuracy enhancement. We observe that compared to the other technologies, FeFET, by virtue of its small layout height and high distinguishability of its memory states, is best suited for large arrays. For higher bit-slices and a more complex dataset (ResNet-50 with Cifar-100) we found that ReRAM matches the performance of FeFET.

The extremes of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) variability offer valuable new insights into the drivers and physics of AGN. We discuss some of the most extreme cases of AGN variability; the highest amplitudes, deep minima states, extreme spectral states, Seyfert-type changes, and semi-periodic signals, including new X-ray observations. The properties of changing-look (CL) AGN are briefly reviewed and a classification scheme is proposed which encompasses the variety of CL phenomena; distinguishing slow and fast events, repeat events, and frozen-look AGN which do not show any emission-line response. Long-term light curves that are densely covered over multiple years, along with follow-up spectroscopy, are utilized to gain insight into the underlying variability mechanisms including accretion disk and broad-line region physics. Remarkable differences are seen, for instance, in the optical spectral response to extreme outbursts, implying distinct intrinsic variability mechanisms. Furthermore, we discuss methods for distinguishing between CL AGN and CL look-alike events (tidal disruption events or supernovae in dense media). Finally, semi-periodic light curve variability is addressed and the latest multiwavelength (MWL) light curve of the binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) candidate OJ 287 from the MOMO project is presented. Recent results from that project have clearly established the need for new binary SMBH modelling matching the tight new constraints from observations, including the measurement of a low (primary) SMBH mass of ~10^8 Msun which also implies that OJ 287 is no longer in the regime of near-future pulsar timing arrays., Comment: Submitted to Advances in Space Research on July 11 (Special Issue on 'Astrophysical Spectroscopy and Data in Investigation of Laboratory and Space Plasmas'). This study presents a theoretical investigation of the physical mechanisms governing small signal capacitance in ferroelectrics, focusing on Hafnium Zirconium Oxide. Utilizing a time-dependent Ginzburg Landau formalism-based 2D multi-grain phase-field simulation framework, we simulate the capacitance of metal-ferroelectric-insulator-metal (MFIM) capacitors. Our simulation methodology closely mirrors the experimental procedures for measuring ferroelectric small signal capacitance, and the outcomes replicate the characteristic butterfly capacitance-voltage behavior. We delve into the components of the ferroelectric capacitance associated with the dielectric response and polarization switching, discussing the primary physical mechanisms - domain bulk response and domain wall response - contributing to the butterfly characteristics. We explore their interplay and relative contributions to the capacitance and correlate them to the polarization domain characteristics. Additionally, we investigate the impact of increasing domain density with ferroelectric thickness scaling, demonstrating an enhancement in the polarization capacitance component (in addition to the dielectric component). We further analyze the relative contributions of the domain bulk and domain wall responses across different ferroelectric thicknesses. Lastly, we establish the relation of polarization capacitance components to the capacitive memory window (for memory applications) and reveal a non-monotonic dependence of the maximum memory window on HZO thickness.

We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. Finally, the derived Swift-BAT upper limits are used to infer constraints on the putative electromagnetic emission associated with binary black hole mergers., Comment: 50 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

The strength distributions of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) and Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR) in 142,146-150Nd have been determined via inelastic alpha-particle scattering with the Grand Raiden (GR) Spectrometer at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Japan. In the deformed nuclei 146-150Nd, the ISGMR strength distributions exhibit a splitting into two components, while the nearly spherical nucleus 142Nd displays a single peak in the ISGMR strength distribution. A noteworthy achievement in this study is the first-time detection of overtones in the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR) strength distributions within Nd isotopes at an excitation energy around 25 MeV obtained through Multipole Decomposition Analysis (MDA)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

Nuclear Experiment ,Nuclear Theory - Abstract
Proton and $\alpha$-particle energy spectra were measured in coincidence with fission fragments at different relative angles in $^{16}$O (96 MeV) + $^{232}$Th reaction. The multiplicity spectra were analyzed within the framework of a Moving Source Disentangling Analysis (MSDA) to determine contributions from different emission stages. The MSDA conclusively shows ``Near Scission Emission (NSE)" as an essential component in the multiplicity spectra. In contrast to NSE $\alpha$ particles which emit mainly perpendicular (``equatorial emission"), the NSE protons are observed to be emitted perpendicular as well as parallel (``polar emission") to the fission axis with similar intensities ($\sim$20\% for each). Thus, around 40\% of total pre-scission protons are emitted near the scission stage, whereas the same fraction for $\alpha$ particles is only around 10\%. The inevitable presence of ``polar" and ``equatorial" NSE protons in a heavy-ion induced fission has been observed for the first time. Present results open up a new avenue to study the heavy-ion induced fission dynamics.

In this article we report the structural stability of Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ cubic pyrochlore with pressure using x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence, x-ray absorption and ab-initio calculations. Our studies establish a phase transformation in Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ from ambient cubic phase to high-pressure orthorhombic (cotunnite) phase, initiated at ~40 GPa. The transformation is sluggish and it does not complete even at the highest measured pressure in our study i.e. ~60.0 GPa. This is further supported by the first principle calculations which reveal that cotunnite phase is energetically more stable than the ambient phase above ~53 GPa. After complete release of pressure, the high-pressure cotunnite phase is retained while the fraction of untransformed pyrochlore phase becomes amorphous. Furthermore, the EXAFS data of the recovered sample at L3 edge of Er3+ ion show an increase in the coordination number of cations from eight at ambient to nine in the high-pressure phase. The mechanism of structural transformation is explained in terms of accumulation of cation antisite defects and subsequent disordering of cations and anions in their respective sublattice. The amorphization of the pyrochlore phase upon release is interpreted as the inability of accommodating the point defects at ambient conditions, which are formed in the pyrochlore lattice under compression.

Reliable forecasts of the Earth system are crucial for human progress and safety from natural disasters. Artificial intelligence offers substantial potential to improve prediction accuracy and computational efficiency in this field, however this remains underexplored in many domains. Here we introduce Aurora, a large-scale foundation model for the Earth system trained on over a million hours of diverse data. Aurora outperforms operational forecasts for air quality, ocean waves, tropical cyclone tracks, and high-resolution weather forecasting at orders of magnitude smaller computational expense than dedicated existing systems. With the ability to fine-tune Aurora to diverse application domains at only modest computational cost, Aurora represents significant progress in making actionable Earth system predictions accessible to anyone.

We explore the usage of large language models (LLM) in human-in-the-loop human-in-the-plant cyber-physical systems (CPS) to translate a high-level prompt into a personalized plan of actions, and subsequently convert that plan into a grounded inference of sequential decision-making automated by a real-world CPS controller to achieve a control goal. We show that it is relatively straightforward to contextualize an LLM so it can generate domain-specific plans. However, these plans may be infeasible for the physical system to execute or the plan may be unsafe for human users. To address this, we propose CPS-LLM, an LLM retrained using an instruction tuning framework, which ensures that generated plans not only align with the physical system dynamics of the CPS but are also safe for human users. The CPS-LLM consists of two innovative components: a) a liquid time constant neural network-based physical dynamics coefficient estimator that can derive coefficients of dynamical models with some unmeasured state variables; b) the model coefficients are then used to train an LLM with prompts embodied with traces from the dynamical system and the corresponding model coefficients. We show that when the CPS-LLM is integrated with a contextualized chatbot such as BARD it can generate feasible and safe plans to manage external events such as meals for automated insulin delivery systems used by Type 1 Diabetes subjects., Comment: Accepted for publication in AAAI 2024, Planning for Cyber Physical Systems

Whilst multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) remain a promising class of materials owing to several attractive mechanical properties, their corrosion performance is also unique. In this concise review, we present an emerging overview of some of the general features related to MPEA corrosion, following a decade of work in the field. This includes highlighting some of the key aspects related to the electrochemical phenomena in MPEA corrosion, and the relevant future works required for a holistic mechanistic understanding. In addition, a comprehensive database of the reported corrosion performance of MPEAs is presented, based on works reported to date. The database is assembled to also allow users to undertake machine learning or their own data analysis, with a parsed representation of alloy composition, test electrolyte, and corrosion related parameters.

This is the second in a series of papers in which we use JWST MIRI multiband imaging to measure the warm dust emission in a sample of 31 multiply imaged quasars, to be used as a probe of the particle nature of dark matter. We present measurements of the relative magnifications of the strongly lensed warm dust emission in a sample of 9 systems. The warm dust region is compact and sensitive to perturbations by populations of halos down to masses $\sim 10^6$ M$_{\odot}$. Using these warm dust flux-ratio measurements in combination with 5 previous narrow-line flux-ratio measurements, we constrain the halo mass function. In our model, we allow for complex deflector macromodels with flexible third and fourth-order multipole deviations from ellipticity, and we introduce an improved model of the tidal evolution of subhalos. We constrain a WDM model and find an upper limit on the half-mode mass of $10^{7.6} M_\odot$ at posterior odds of 10:1. This corresponds to a lower limit on a thermally produced dark matter particle mass of 6.1 keV. This is the strongest gravitational lensing constraint to date, and comparable to those from independent probes such as the Ly$\alpha$ forest and Milky Way satellite galaxies.

In Part-I, we presented an optimal day-ahead scheduling scheme for dispatching active distribution networks accounting for the flexibility provided by electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) and other controllable resources such as battery energy storage systems (BESSs). Part-II presents the intra-day control layer for tracking the dispatch plan computed from the day-ahead scheduling stage. The control problem is formulated as model predictive control (MPC) with an objective to track the dispatch plan setpoint every 5 minutes, while actuated every 30 seconds. MPC accounts for the uncertainty of the power injections from stochastic resources (such as demand and generation from photovoltaic - PV plants) by short-term forecasts. MPC also accounts for the grid's operational constraints (i.e., the limits on the nodal voltages and the line power-flows) by a linearized optimal power flow (LOPF) model based on the power-flow sensitivity coefficients, and for the operational constraints of the controllable resources (i.e., BESSs and EVCSs). The proposed framework is experimentally validated on a real-life ADN at the EPFL's Distributed Electrical Systems Laboratory and is composed of a medium voltage (MV) bus connected to three low voltage distribution networks. It hosts two controllable EVCSs (172 kWp and 32 F~kWp), multiple PV plants (aggregated generation of 42~kWp), uncontrollable demand from office buildings (20 kWp), and two controllable BESSs (150kW/300kWh and 25kW/25kWh)., Comment: 10 pages, 14 Figures, submitted for review in IEEE Transactions

This paper proposes a grid-aware scheduling and control framework for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCSs) for dispatching the operation of an active power distribution network. The framework consists of two stages. In the first stage, we determine an optimal day-ahead power schedule at the grid connection point (GCP), referred to as the dispatch plan. Then, in the second stage, a real-time model predictive control is proposed to track the day-ahead dispatch plan using flexibility from EVCSs. The dispatch plan accounts for the uncertainties of vehicles connected to the EVCS along with other uncontrollable power injections, by day-ahead predicted scenarios. We propose using a Gaussian-Mixture-Model (GMM) for the forecasting of EVCS demand using the historical dataset on arrival, departure times, EV battery capacity, State-of-Charge (SoC) targets, etc. The framework ensures that the grid is operated within its voltage and branches power-flow operational bounds, modeled by a linearized optimal power-flow model, maintaining the tractability of the problem formulation. The scheme is numerically and experimentally validated on a real-life distribution network at the EPFL connected to two EVCSs, two batteries, three photovoltaic plants, and multiple heterogeneous loads. The day-ahead and real-time stages are described in Part-I and Part-II papers respectively., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures (submitted for review in IEEE Transactions)

The VT and Helberg codes, both in binary and non-binary forms, stand as elegant solutions for rectifying insertion and deletion errors. In this paper we consider the quaternary versions of these codes. It is well known that many optimal binary non-linear codes like Kerdock and Prepreta can be depicted as Gray images (isometry) of codes defined over $\mathbb{Z}_4$. Thus a natural question arises: Can we find similar maps between quaternary and binary spaces which gives interesting properties when applied to the VT and Helberg codes. We found several such maps called Naisargik (natural) maps and we study the images of quaternary VT and Helberg codes under these maps. Naisargik and inverse Naisargik images gives interesting error-correcting properties for VT and Helberg codes. If two Naisargik images of VT code generates an intersecting one deletion sphere, then the images holds the same weights. A quaternary Helberg code designed to correct $s$ deletions can effectively rectify $s+1$ deletion errors when considering its Naisargik image, and $s$-deletion correcting binary Helberg code can corrects $\lfloor\frac{s}{2}\rfloor$ errors with inverse Naisargik image., Comment: 20 pages, 18 Tables, draft, data is at https://github.com/guptalab/GrayVT

Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Systems and Control - Abstract
The DistFlow model accurately represents power flows in distribution systems, but the model's nonlinearities result in computational challenges for many applications. Accordingly, a linear approximation known as \mbox{LinDistFlow} (and its three-phase extension LinDist3Flow) is commonly employed. This paper introduces a parameter optimization algorithm for enhancing the accuracy of this approximation for both balanced single-phase equivalent and unbalanced three-phase distribution network models, with the goal of aligning the outputs more closely with those from the nonlinear DistFlow model. Using sensitivity information, our algorithm optimizes the LinDistFlow approximation's coefficient and bias parameters to minimize discrepancies in predictions of voltage magnitudes relative to the nonlinear DistFlow model. The parameter optimization algorithm employs the Truncated Newton Conjugate-Gradient (TNC) method to fine-tune coefficients and bias parameters during an offline training phase to improve the LinDistFlow approximation's accuracy. % in optimization applications. Numerical results underscore the algorithm's efficacy, showcasing accuracy improvements in $L_{1}$-norm and $L_{\infty}$-norm losses of up to $92\%$ and $88\%$, respectively, relative to the traditional LinDistFlow model. We also assess how the optimized parameters perform under changes in the network topology and demonstrate the optimized LinDistFlow approximation's efficacy in a hosting capacity optimization problem.

In the current world due to the huge demand for storage, DNA-based storage solution sounds quite promising because of their longevity, low power consumption, and high capacity. However in real life storing data in the form of DNA is quite expensive, and challenging. Therefore researchers and developers develop such kind of software that helps simulate real-life DNA storage without worrying about the cost. This paper aims to review some of the software that performs DNA storage simulations in different domains. The paper also explains the core concepts such as synthesis, sequencing, clustering, reconstruction, GC window, K-mer window, etc and some overview on existing algorithms. Further, we present 3 different softwares on the basis of domain, implementation techniques, and customer/commercial usability., Comment: 19 pages, 19 figures, draft, review

We report the observation of a coalescing compact binary with component masses $2.5\text{-}4.5~M_\odot$ and $1.2\text{-}2.0~M_\odot$ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The gravitational-wave signal GW230529_181500 was observed during the fourth observing run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detector network on 2023 May 29 by the LIGO Livingston Observatory. The primary component of the source has a mass less than $5~M_\odot$ at 99% credibility. We cannot definitively determine from gravitational-wave data alone whether either component of the source is a neutron star or a black hole. However, given existing estimates of the maximum neutron star mass, we find the most probable interpretation of the source to be the coalescence of a neutron star with a black hole that has a mass between the most massive neutron stars and the least massive black holes observed in the Galaxy. We provisionally estimate a merger rate density of $55^{+127}_{-47}~\text{Gpc}^{-3}\,\text{yr}^{-1}$ for compact binary coalescences with properties similar to the source of GW230529_181500; assuming that the source is a neutron star-black hole merger, GW230529_181500-like sources constitute about 60% of the total merger rate inferred for neutron star-black hole coalescences. The discovery of this system implies an increase in the expected rate of neutron star-black hole mergers with electromagnetic counterparts and provides further evidence for compact objects existing within the purported lower mass gap., Comment: 45 pages (10 pages author list, 13 pages main text, 1 page acknowledgements, 13 pages appendices, 8 pages bibliography), 17 figures, 16 tables.
