Abstract Background Diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) is a common diabetes complication with limited treatment options. We aimed to identify circulating plasma proteins as potential therapeutic targets for DPN using Mendelian Randomization (MR). Methods The protein quantitative trait loci (pQTLs) utilized in this study were derived from seven previously published genome-wide association studies (GWASs) on plasma proteomics. The DPN data were obtained from the IEU OpenGWAS project. This study employed two-sample MR using MR-Egger and inverse-variance weighted methods to evaluate the causal relationship between plasma proteins and DPN risk, with Cochran’s Q test, and I2 statistics, among other methods, used to validate the robustness of the results. Results Using cis-pQTLs as genetic instruments, we identified 62 proteins associated with DPN, with 33 increasing the risk and 29 decreasing the risk of DPN. Using cis-pQTLs + trans-pQTLs, we identified 116 proteins associated with DPN, with 44 increasing the risk and 72 decreasing the risk of DPN. Steiger directionality tests indicated that the causal relationships between circulating plasma proteins and DPN were consistent with expected directions. Conclusion This study identified 96 circulating plasma proteins with genetically determined levels that affect the risk of DPN, providing new potential targets for DPN drug development, particularly ITM2B, CREG1, CD14, and PLXNA4.

Objective Few studies have explored the relationship between the pathological characteristics of hallux valgus and surgical outcomes. The aim of our study was to report the influence of pathological characteristics such as the tibial sesamoid position (TSP) and first metatarsal pronation on postoperative functional scores and patient satisfaction with hallux valgus surgery. Methods From June 2017 to December 2022, a retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who underwent hallux valgus surgery at our hospital. Anteroposterior (AP) x‐ray parameters (hallux valgus angle [HVA], intermetatarsal angle [IMA], distal metatarsal articular angle [DMAA], TSP, first metatarsal pronation, and first metatarsophalangeal joint dislocation) (preoperative weight‐bearing, immediate postoperative non‐weight‐bearing, and early postoperative weight‐bearing), visual analog scale (VAS) scores, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) forefoot scores, SAFE‐Q self‐administered foot evaluation questionnaire (excluding the Sports Activity subscale), complications, and patient satisfaction were used to describe the outcomes. Correlation analysis and multiple linear regression models were used to identify factors influencing postoperative functional scores and patient satisfaction after hallux valgus surgery. Results Eighty‐one patients (92 feet) whose early radiographic parameters and latest follow‐up scores improved significantly (p 0.05). The R 2 values of the multiple linear regression models predicting postoperative functional scores and patient satisfaction ranged from 0.042 to 0.351. Conclusion TSP and first metatarsal pronation were unrelated to postoperative functional scores or patient satisfaction. This finding enhances surgeons' understanding of the functional prognosis of hallux valgus surgery, particularly aiding in explaining the condition and assessing surgical outcomes.

ObjectiveTo investigate the difference in the effectiveness and refraction of the foldable capsular buckle (FCB) in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).MethodsSix patients with simple RRD were treated for FCB scleral buckling at Xiamen Eye Center of Xiamen University from October 2023 to February 2024. The parameters assessed included demographic data, clinical data such as preoperative ocular axis, corneal endothelial count, macular foveal thickness, operative time, preoperative and final follow-up intro ocular pressure (IOP), retinal attachment status, and postoperative complications. Refractive change before and after surgery, including sphere, cylinder degree, spherical equivalent, and absolute spherical equivalent difference were compared.ResultsAll six patients with sound retinal reattachment after FCB scleral buckling, including two men and four women, mean age 41.33 ± 12.40 years old, duration before surgery onset to 7.17 ± 7.16 days, FCB mean operation time 36.67 ± 13.07 min, Preoperative IOP mean 13.35 ± 2.64 mmHg and mean 21.12 ± 8.09 mmHg of final follow-up IOP; there was no significant difference between preoperative IOP and follow-up IOP (p = 0.050). The preoperative sphere range was −6.25 to +2.50 D, and the cylinder range was −2.50 to +1.00 D; the absolute spherical equivalent difference before and after was 1.60 ± 1.69 degrees.ConclusionFCB can achieve retinal reattachment and restore visual function in cases of RRD. The shorter duration of external scleral buckle compression with FCB suggests that FCB scleral buckling holds greater promise in the clinical treatment of RRD caused by retinal tears.

The healing of damaged skin is a complex and dynamic process, and the multi-functional hydrogel dressings could promote skin tissue healing. This study, therefore, explored the development of a composite multifunctional hydrogel (HDCP) by incorporating the dopamine modified hyaluronic acid (HA-DA) and phenylboronic acid modified chitosan (CS-PBA) crosslinked using boric acid ester bonds. The integration of HA-DA and CS-PBA could be confirmed using the Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance analyses. The fabricated HDCP hydrogels exhibited porous structure, elastic solid behavior, shear-thinning, and adhesion properties. Furthermore, the HDCP hydrogels exhibited antibacterial efficacy against Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Subsequently, the cytocompatibility of the HDCP hydrogels was verified through CCK-8 assay and fluorescent image analysis following co-cultivation with NIH-3T3 cells. This research presents an innovative multifunctional hydrogel that holds promise as a wound dressing for various applications within the realm of wound healing.

Bacterial persister cells are a subpopulation of isogenic bacteria with characteristics of reduced metabolic activity and multidrug antibiotic resistance. Our lab had previously proved that Vibrio splendidus could form persister cells both naturally and after stimulation. However, the conditions for the waking up of V. splendidus persister cells remain marginal. In this study, the carbon sources that could wake up V. splendidus persister cells were selected from 20 amino acids and eight saccharides. The result showed that L-glutamic acid, L-aspartic acid, L-arginine, L-phenylalanine, L-leucine, maltose, D-galactose, sorbitol, mannose, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, D-glucose, and D-fructose could wake up the V. splendidus persister cells. The chemotaxis activity of both exponential cells and regrown persister cells on plate containing each of the selected carbon source are also high. The existence of the selected carbon source can affect the antibiotic susceptibility of V. splendidus. When L-glutamic acid, L-aspartic acid, L-phenylalanine, and D-glucose were separately added into the cultured V. splendidus simultaneously with tetracycline, V. splendidus could be completely eliminated, while the addition of L-alanine and D-galactose could not. Our study suggested that V. splendidus persister cells could revive in the presence of specific carbon sources, and the addition of these exogenous nutrients could increase the tetracycline susceptibility of V. splendidus.

For many applications such as tele-operational robots and interactions with virtual environments, it is better to have performance with force feedback than without. Haptic devices are force reflecting interfaces. They can also track human hand positions simultaneously. A new 6 DOF (degree-of-freedom) haptic device was designed and calibrated in this study. It mainly contains a double parallel linkage, a rhombus linkage, a rotating mechanical structure and a grasping interface. Benefited from the unique design, it is a hybrid structure device with a large workspace and high output capability. Therefore, it is capable of multi-finger interactions. Moreover, with an adjustable base, operators can change different postures without interrupting haptic tasks. To investigate the performance regarding position tracking accuracy and static output forces, we conducted experiments on a three-dimensional electric sliding platform and a digital force gauge, respectively. Displacement errors and force errors are calculated and analyzed. To identify the capability and potential of the device, four application examples were programmed.

ABSTRACT CONTEXT: Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (HNL) is a rare disorder that is often benign and self-limiting. There have been reports of co-occurrence of HNL with other diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus, hemophagocytic syndrome and antiphospholipid syndrome. CASE REPORT: Here, we report a case in which a patient experienced unexplained fever, swelling of the cervical lymph node and bilateral pleural effusion and was ultimately diagnosed with HNL based on results from a lymph node biopsy. After treatment with glucocorticoid, the patient regained normal body temperature, the swelling of the lymph nodes disappeared and the pleural effusion was reabsorbed. CONCLUSIONS: The pathogenesis of HNL remains unclear, and pleural effusion is rarely reported in HNL patients. We presented this case to improve diagnostic awareness of this condition among clinicians and help reduce the likelihood of misdiagnosis.

Short interfering RNA (siRNA) targeted against anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein proved to knockdown its expression and trigger cancer cell death. We used degradable, pH-sensitive, comb-like [P(EAA-co-BMA)-b-PNASI-g-P(HMA-co-TMAEMA)] polymer to condense anti-Bcl-2 siRNA into “smart” particles, which proved to shuttle their cargo past the endosomal membrane and into the cytoplasm of HeLa and UM-SCC-17B cancer cells. HeLa and UM-SCC-17B cancer cells were treated with anti-Bcl-2 particles followed by quantifying Bcl-2 mRNA and protein levels using qRT-PCR and western blotting, respectively. “Smart” anti-Bcl-2 particles selectively suppress Bcl-2 mRNA and protein levels in HeLa cells by 50%–60% and 79%–81%, respectively. Similarly, “smart” anti-Bcl-2 particles inhibited Bcl-2 mRNA levels by 30%, 40%, and 20% upon incubation with UM-SCC-17B cancer cells for 48, 72, and 96 h, respectively. Bcl-2 protein expression in UM-SCC-17B cancer cells was inhibited by 30% after treatment for 72 h. Results show that pH-sensitive comb-like polymer complex anti-Bcl-2 siRNA forming “smart” nanoparticles that deliver their cargo into the cytoplasm of HeLa and UM-SCC-17B cancer cells causing Bcl-2 knockdown at the mRNA and protein levels.

This paper presents a framework for addressing normative accounting issues for reporting to shareholders. The framework is an alternative to the emerging Conceptual Framework of the International Accounting Standards Board and the Financial Accounting Standards Board. The framework can be broadly characterized as a utilitarian approach to accounting standard setting. It has two main features. First, accounting is linked to valuation models under which shareholders use accounting information to values their stakes. Second, the desirable characteristics of accounting information are inferred from the demand of investors and analysts who use the information in practice. This stands in contrast to the “qualitative characteristics” in the Boards’ Framework which are embraced largely on the basis of their aesthetic appeal. These features lead to a set of broad accounting principles that resolve “recognition” and “measurement” issues at the core of the Boards’ Conceptual Framework and also the central issue of a balance sheet approach versus an income statement approach. The framework in the paper also frames the research questions for researchers interested in accounting policy.

Chinese listed firms are characterized by a great magnitude of long-duration accounts receivable from controlling shareholders and their affiliates, and they often do not make bad debt allowances. On many occasions, these receivables are never collected. We find that firms with a great magnitude of accounts receivable demonstrate a low level of future profitability and low stock returns. It does not appear that the low earnings persistence of these firms is responsible for their poor future performance as predicted by the accrual anomaly, because the firms also report low concurrent earnings. In the context of the Chinese stock market, we interpret the results as being consistent with self-dealing through trade credit by controlling shareholders. This study contributes to the self-dealing literature by identifying a more subtle channel of expropriation of minority shareholders in China.

The Raf kinase inhibitory protein (RKIP) is down-regulated in multiple types of human cancers. Decreased RKIP transcription activity may be one of the major mechanisms responsible for the downregulation of RKIP expression in human diseases. To test this hypothesis, we need to gain basic knowledge of the transcriptional regulation of RKIP. To achieve this objective, we made a systematic effort to identify cis-acting elements and trans-acting factors that control RKIP promoter activity. We found that full RKIP promoter activity requires the region -56 to +261 relative to the transcription start site. Within the full promoter region, there are two motifs rich in G/C that responded to transcription factor Sp1, one cAMP-responsive element that responded to the transcription factor CREB, and one docking site for the histone acetylase p300. In human melanoma A375 cells and human cervical cancer HeLa cells, mutation or deletion of each of these cis-acting elements decreased promoter activity. In A375 cells, knockdown of the corresponding transcription factors Sp1, CREB, or p300 decreased RKIP promoter activity, whereas overexpression of CREB and p300 increased RKIP promoter activity. The results obtained with HeLa cells also supported the idea that Sp1 and CREB play positive roles in the regulation of RKIP transcription. These findings suggest that regulators of the expression or activity of Sp1, CREB, and p300 are involved in regulating RKIP transcription.

A simple sol-gel method was used to prepare magnetic Fe3O4/SiO2/TiO2 composites with core-shell structure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been applied to investigate the structure and morphology of the resultant composites. The obtained composites showed excellent magnetism and higher photodegradation ability than pure TiO2. The photocatalytic mechanism was also discussed. The magnetic composites should be extended to various potential applications, such as photodegradation, catalysis, separation, and purification processes.
