Nano zero-valent iron biochar (nZVI–BC), an environmentally-friendly functional material prepared from waste biomass, has attracted extensive attention. This material has potential to solve the problem of biomass conversion. However, the lack of a method of converting biomass to the nZVI–BC involved in biomass modification and pyrolysis hinders its further production and application. In this study, we introduced the green solvent polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG400) to a biomass (rice straw, RS) modification system with FeCl3·6H2O, and activated RS was prepared to nZVI–BC by one-step pyrolysis. The addition of PEG400 promoted the hydrolysis of iron ion and improved the RS surface structure, promoting the attachment of Fe2O3 to the RS surface. The mild activation conditions with temperatures of 60, 80, 100 °C and a time of 0.5 h prevented the excessive loss of the lignin component and were conducive to the formation of carbon skeletons. Amorphous carbon and Fe2O3 were subjected to redox reactions to form nZVI–BC with the assistance of reducing gas produced from pyrolysis. In addition, the prepared nZVI–BC was tested for dye (Congo red) removal, showing rapid absorption (70.6% at 5 min) and high catalysis in advanced oxidation (75.67% at 5 min, 90% at 60 min). This work proposed a novel mechanistic strategy for preparing nZVI–BC and set a foundation for its scaled production and application.

A broadband and wide-beamwidth dual-polarized orthogonal dipole antenna for 4G/5G communication is presented in this letter. A pair of orthogonal deformed fan-shaped dipoles was used to obtain dual-polarization. The parasitic elements and metal cavity structure were used to increase the impedance bandwidth effectively. And the half-power beamwidths (HPBWs) of the antenna were effectively widened by using the metal cavity. Furthermore, a 1 × 4 antenna array was designed. The measured HPBWs of E -plane and H -plane radiation patterns were greater than 90° in the operating frequency band of 1.7–3.22 GHz (voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) < 2.0), and the gain was greater than 0 dBi in the range of ±60° pitch angle. The isolation of the two input ports was higher than 29 dB in the band of 1.7–3.22 GHz (61.8%).

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a neurotrophin that is vital to the survival, growth, and maintenance of neurons.Methods: We administered BDNF into chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced depression mice and assessed the effects of intranasal delivery of BDNF in depression by the tail suspension test, forced swimming test, novelty suppressed feeding test, and open-field test.Results: We find that the intranasal administration of BDNF reversed the depressive-like behaviors in CUMS mice as measured Further analyses suggested that BDNF treatment reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine (IL-6, TNF-α, iNOS and IL-1β) expressions in the hippocampus of CUMS mice. In addition, our results showed that BDNF markedly reduced oxidative stress in the hippocampus and blood of CUMS mice. Moreover, our data suggested that BDNF treatment increased neurogenesis in the hippocampus of CUMS mice.Discussion: Taken together, our results for the first time demonstrated that intranasal delivery of BDNF protein exhibited anti-depressant-like effects in mice, and therefore may represent a new therapeutic strategy for major depressive disorder.Keywords: depression, BDNF, neurogenesis, inflammatory cytokine, oxidative stress

Simultaneously achieving efficient nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removal without adding external carbon source is vital for carbon-neutral wastewater treatment. In this study, a novel cross-flow honeycomb bionic microbial carrier (CF) was developed to improve the efficiency of simultaneous nitrification, denitrification, and P removal (SNDPR) in an integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) system. A parallel laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor with the commercialized microbial carriers (CM) (CM-IFAS) was performed as the comparative system for over 233 d The results demonstrated that CF-IFAS exhibited a more consistent N removal efficiency and better performance than CM-IFAS. In the CF-IFAS, the highest N and P removal efficiencies were 95.40% and 100%, respectively. Typical cycle analysis revealed that nitrate was primarily removed by the denitrifying glycogen-accumulating organisms in the CF-IFAS and by denitrifying phosphate-accumulating organisms in the CM-IFAS. The neutral community model showed that the microbial community assembly in both the reactors was driven by deterministic selection rather than stochastic factors. Compared to those in CM-IFAS, the microorganisms in CF-IFAS were more closely related to each other and had more keystone species: norank_f_norank_o_norank_c_OM190, SM1A02, Defluviicoccus, norank_f_ Saprospiraceae, and norank_f_Rhodocyclaceae. The absolute contents of the genes associated with N removal (bacterial amoA, archaeal amoA, NarG, NapA, NirS, and NirK) were higher in CF-IFAS than in CM-IFAS; the N cycle activity was also stronger in the CF-IFAS. Overall, the microecological environment differed between both systems. This study provides novel insights into the potential of bionic carriers to improve SNDPR performance by shaping microbial communities, thereby providing scientific guidance for practical engineering.

A compact wideband dual-polarized slot-coupled stacked patch antenna is presented in this communication. Two orthogonal U-shaped feed lines are used to excite a cross-slot to obtain dual-polarization. The cross-slot consists of two orthogonal slots whose long sides vary as exponential curves. The impedance bandwidth is increased effectively by using the two orthogonal slots with gradually changing width and stacked patches. The radiation layers and feeding layers of the antenna are embedded in a small cylindrical metal cavity. By using the metal cavity as the reflector, the transverse dimension of the antenna is effectively reduced. The measured results demonstrate that the impedance bandwidth of the antenna is 94% (2.47–6.85 GHz) for $\vert \text{S}_{11}\vert dB with a transmission coefficient of less than −21.2 dB between two input ports. A stable radiation pattern is obtained in the range of 2.5–6.5 GHz. The proposed dual-polarized antenna can be applied to wideband wireless communication systems with compact platforms.

Background MicroRNAs (miRs) have been suggested to be biomarkers to inform the diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD). We have previously shown that exosome-derived miR-139-5p had potential in differentiating between patients with MDD and healthy control (HC) subjects. Materials and methods To validate the potential of exosome-derived miR-139-5p as a biomarker for MDD, here we recruited 30 patients with MDD and 30 HC subjects, and used TaqMan probes to detect serum exosomal miR-139-5p levels. Results The data showed that patients with MDD had significantly increased exosomal miR-139-5p levels when compared with controls. Correlation analysis suggested that sex, age, and body mass index did not significantly affect blood exosomal miR-139-5p levels in the tested subjects. The ROC curve showed that serum-derived miR-139-5p had reasonable performance in discriminating patients with MDD and HC subjects, with a sensitivity of 0.867 and specificity of 0.767, and the AUC was 0.807. Discussion Taken together, these results demonstrated that patients with MDD were accompanied by significantly increased blood exosomal miR-139-5p levels, and exosomal miR-139-5p is a promising biomarker for the diagnosis of MDD.

In lignocellulose-to-hydrogen bioconversion, reducing the concentration of chemical agents in pretreatment is of great interest. In this study, rice straw (RS) pretreated at reduced NaOH and urea (NU) concentrations was evaluated. Results showed that the composition of RS exhibited excellent pretreatment performance at a reduced concentration of NU. When the concentration of NaOH was decreased to 3 wt% in combination with 6 wt% urea, the lignin was reduced by 59.52% with a cellulose and hemicellulose loss of less than 17%. Moreover, extending the pretreatment time at a low concentration of NU could effectively promote the biodegradability of RS. Upon fermentation by Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum M18 for H2 production, the H2 production increased up to 213.06 mL/g with a substrate treated by 3 wt% NaOH/6 wt% urea at low solid loading for 15 d, which was 16.31% higher than the counterpart subjected to a 7 wt% NaOH/12 wt% urea pretreatment. The present results suggest the NU pretreatment can be carried out at low concentrations to improve the conversion of RS into bio-H2 production.

Methane, a potent greenhouse gas of global importance, has traditionally been considered as an end product of microbial methanogenesis of organic matter. Paradoxically, growing evidence has shown that some microbes, such as cyanobacteria, algae, fungi, purple non-sulfur bacteria, and cryptogamic covers, produce methane in oxygen-saturated aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The non-methanogenesis process could be an important potential contributor to methane emissions. This systematic review summarizes the knowledge of microorganisms involved in the non-methanogenesis process and the possible mechanisms of methane formation. Cyanobacteria-derived methane production may be attributed to either demethylation of methyl phosphonates or linked to light-driven primary productivity, while algae produce methane by utilizing methylated sulfur compounds as possible carbon precursors. In addition, fungi produce methane by utilizing methionine as a possible carbon precursor, and purple non‐sulfur bacteria reduce carbon dioxide to methane by nitrogenase. The microbial methane distribution from the non-methanogenesis processes in aquatic and terrestrial environments and its environmental significance to global methane emissions, possible mechanisms of methane production in each open water, water-to-air methane fluxes, and the impact of climate change on microorganisms are also discussed. Finally, future perspectives are highlighted, such as establishing more in-situ experiments, quantifying methane flux through optimizing empirical models, distinguishing individual methane sources, and investigating nitrogenase-like enzyme systems to improve our understanding of microbial methane emission from the non-methanogenesis process.

In the present study, the effect of trace metal nutrients on biomass and lipid productivity of Scenedesmus obliquus cultured in municipal wastewater was evaluated. Lipid productivity of S. obliquus significantly increased by 18.63%, 19.21%, and 27.95% by adding trace metals of Mo, Mn, and Fe, respectively, with the highest lipid productivity of 24.69 mg/(L·d) in case of Fe (3.00 mg/L FeSO4·7H2O). GC analysis of the lipids showed that the control (WW) and ferrous sulfate–treated cultures had very similar compositions, and both of them contained considerable proportions C16-18, showing their suitability for biodiesel production. Moreover, using FeSO4·7H2O enhanced the removal rates of total phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen, and total nitrogen in municipal wastewater, which attained 94.7%, 99.2%, and 95.8%, respectively.

Background Microalgae as a viable biodiesel feedstock show great potential to approach the challenges of energy shortage and environment pollution, but their economic feasibility was seriously hampered by high production cost. Thus, it is in urgent need to reduce the cost of cultivation and improve the biomass and lipid production of microalgae. In this work, anaerobic digestion effluent from cattle manure combined with municipal wastewater was used as a cost-effective medium for cultivating microalgae and expected to obtain high biomass. The pretreatment of anaerobic digested effluent containing dilution rate, sterilization and nutrient optimization was investigated. Then, initial pH and light intensity for algal growth, lipid production and wastewater purification were optimized in this study. Results Scenedesmus sp. could grow rapidly in 10% anaerobic digestion effluent from cattle manure combined with secondary sedimentation tank effluent without sterilization. Optimum nutrient additives for higher biomass were as follows: glucose 10 g/L, NaNO3 0.3 g/L, K2HPO4·3H2O 0.01 g/L, MgSO4·7H2O 0.075 g/L and trace element A5 solution 1 mL/L. Biomass of 4.65 g/L and lipid productivity of 81.90 mg/L/day were achieved during 7-day cultivation accompanying over 90% of COD, NO3−-N, NH4+-N, and 79–88% of PO43−-P removal with optimized initial pH of 7.0 and light intensity of 5000 l×. The FAME profile in ADEC growth medium consisted in saturated (39.48%) and monounsaturated (60.52%) fatty acids with the 16- to 18-chain-length fatty acids constituting over 98% of total FAME. Conclusions This study proves the potential of anaerobic digested effluent combined with municipal wastewater for microalgae culture, and provides an effective avenue for simultaneous microalgal lipid production and treatment of two kinds of wastewater.

To enhance photo-fermentative hydrogen production (PFHP), biofilm reactor (BR) was employed as an ideal strategy with optimization on key factors of acetate concentration and carriers in this work. Optimal conditions for hydrogen production were acetate concentration of 4 g/L and carriers (silicon sheet) of 10 cm × 1 cm at amount of 1 piece. Biofilm formed on silicon sheet strongly improved hydrogen production compared with control reactor (CR). Cumulative hydrogen volume was enhanced about 20% from 2850 ± 130 mL/L of CR to 3349 ± 153 mL/L of BR and hydrogen yield was increased 20% from 2.61 ± 0.13 mol H2/mol acetate of CR to 3.06 ± 0.15 mol H2/mol acetate of BR at 4 g/L acetate. Protein and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) were important components to form the biofilm and they occupied 90% of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). In particular, DNA, nearly 50% content of EPS, likely indicated a substantial contribution to biofilm formation and bacterial communication. Moreover, it suggested biofilm could regulate free cells to decline EPS secretion for improved hydrogen production. This work indicates BR could be a promising and economic strategy to enhance hydrogen production by photo-fermentation.

Currently, the complex mechanism of lipid production in microalgal cells is still unclear, and the platform suitable for microalgal genetic transformation is urgent to be established. In this study, the whole genome of a lipid-rich microalgal mutant strain Scenedesmus sp. Z-4 and a lipid-poor wild strain Scenedesmus sp. MC-1 were sequenced, and results revealed that the sequences of 1,256 genes were changed and 148 differential genes related to glucose and lipid metabolism were identified. Especially, gene differentiation of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) in mutant strain Z-4 and wild strain MC-1, which played key roles in lipid synthesis, were evaluated. Furthermore, to investigate whether mutated ACCase and PEPC genes affect the lipid production, two genes from mutant strain Z-4 were transformed into the expression system of wild strain MC-1. Nine transformants with higher lipid content were successfully obtained, in which the optimal transformant with 28.6% more intracellular lipid than wild strain MC-1 was isolated by overexpression of mutated ACCase gene, demonstrating the important role of ACCase in lipid accumulation of microalgal cells. These results could provide a better understanding of the superior lipid production of mutant strain Scenedesmus sp. Z-4.

Background H2–ethanol-coproducing bacteria, as primary fermenters, play important roles in the microbiome of bioreactors for bioenergy production from organic wastewater or solid wastes. Ethanoligenens harbinense YUAN-3 is an anaerobic ethanol–H2-fermenting bacterium. Ethanol is one of the main end-products of strain YUAN-3 that influence its fermentative process. Until recently, the molecular mechanism of metabolic regulation in strain YUAN-3 during ethanol accumulation has still been unclear. This study aims to elucidate the metabolic regulation mechanisms in strain YUAN-3, which contributes to effectively shape the microbiome for biofuel and bioenergy production from waste stream. Results This study reports that ethanol stress altered the distribution of end-product yields in the H2–ethanol-coproducing Ethanoligenens harbinense strain YUAN-3. Decreasing trends of hydrogen yield from 1888.6 ± 45.8 to 837 ± 64.7 mL L−1 and acetic acid yield from 1767.7 ± 45 to 160.6 ± 44.7 mg L−1 were observed in strain YUAN-3 with increasing exogenous ethanol (0 mM–200 mM). However, the ethanol yield of strain YUAN-3 increased by 15.1%, 30.1%, and 27.4% in 50 mM, 100 mM, and 200 mM ethanol stress, respectively. The endogenous ethanol accounted for 96.1% (w/w) in liquid end-products when exogenous ethanol of 200 mM was added. The molar ratio of ethanol to acetic acid increased 14 times (exogenous ethanol of 200 mM) compared to the control. iTRAQ-based quantitative proteomic analysis indicated that 263 proteins of strain YUAN-3 were differentially expressed in 50 mM, 100 mM, and 200 mM of exogenous ethanol. These proteins are mainly involved in amino acid transport and metabolism, central carbon metabolism, and oxidative stress response. Conclusion These differentially expressed proteins play important roles in metabolic changes necessary for growth and survival of strain YUAN-3 during ethanol stress. The up-regulation of bifunctional acetaldehyde-CoA/alcohol dehydrogenase (ADHE) was the main reason why ethanol production was enhanced, while hydrogen gas and acetic acid yields declined in strain YUAN-3 during ethanol stress. This study also provides a new approach for the enhancement of ethanologenesis by H2–ethanol-coproducing bacteria through exogenous ethanol addition.

Mutagenetic breeding is an efficient technique for the enhancement of lipid productivity from microalgae. In this study, oil-rich microalga Scenedesmus obliquus were treated by Laser-UV composite mutagenesis. Among the 35 mutant strains, X5 was primely screened. Afterwards, a twice UV mutagenizing was operated on X5, and the optimal mutant strain X5-H13 was obtained. The growth rate, dry weight, lipid yield and lipid content of X5-H13 were 0.698×107 cells/mL·d, 0.99 g/L, 0.49 g/L and 48.8% while cultivated in municipal wastewater, respectively, which were increased by 45%, 58%, 109% and 32% than the original strain. The results of the subculture of repeated mutant showed that the biomass and lipid content of strain X5-H13 were up to 0.99 g/L and 48.8%. The growth of each generation was stable. Furthermore, the random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis indicated that the mutant strain X5-H13 was different from the starting strain, with their genetic similarity coefficient value of 0.815.

Background Optimizing the ability of exoelectrogens is a key factor in boosting the overall efficiency of bioelectrochemical systems. In this study, we construct magnetic microbial fuel cells (MFCs) with magnets with different static magnetic field (SMF) intensities for use as anodes. It is proposed as an in situ study of the effects of magnetic fields on the performance and exoelectrogenic biofilm of bioelectrochemical system. Results The magnetic MFCs obtain a 71.0–105% increase in voltage production and a 42.9–104% increase in power density compared with non-magnetic MFCs. MFCs with a MF intensity of 80 mT obtain the best performances. SMF decreases the internal resistance of MFCs, especially its diffusion resistance. The relative abundance of Geobacter in magnetic MFCs is up to 32.5% higher than that of non-magnetic MFC. SMFs also lead to the shifts in microbial community structure of methanogens. Conclusion The constructed magnetic MFCs obtained better performance compared with the non-magnetic MFC, in terms of voltage production, power density, and coulombic efficiency. The relative abundance of Geobacter spp. (one kind of exoelectrogen) was much higher in the magnetic MFCs. The optimal static magnetic field intensity for enriching exoelectrogens is around 80 mT. It is likely that the decrease of internal resistance, enrichment in exoelectrogens, and the syntrophic interactions between exoelectrogens and methanogens result in the enhanced performance of magnetic MFCs. This study provides a magnetic method for the enrichment of exoelectrogens, which can be extensively applied in bioelectrochemical systems.

Lipid extraction is a key step of biodiesel production from microalgae, however, the application of traditional extraction methods was limited due to the difficulties of cell disruption as well as solvent toxicity. In this work, pretreatment method using pulsed electric field (PEF), was primarily applied to lipid extraction process from microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa grown in wastewater. After the pretreatment with PEF, the yields of fatty acid methyl esters from C.pyrenoidosa was 12.0% higher than traditional pretreatment with ultrasonic. The results indicated that PEF was an effective method for cell disruption. Fluorescence staining and scanning electron microscopy showed that the integrity of the cell membrane of microalgae was damaged under pulsed electric field, which enhanced the penetration of solvents and lipid extraction.

Manganese is a vital heavy metal abundant in terrestrial and aquatic environments. Anaerobic manganese redox reactions mediated by microorganisms have been recognized for a long time, which promote elements mobility and bioavailability in the environment. Biological anaerobic redox of manganese serves two reactions, including Mn(II) oxidation and Mn(IV) reduction. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of manganese redox cycles in the environment, closely related to greenhouse gas mitigation, the fate of nutrients, microbial bioremediation, and global biogeochemical cycle, including nitrogen, sulfur, and carbon. The oxidation and reduction of manganese occur cyclically and simultaneously in the environment. Anaerobic reduction of Mn(IV) receives electrons from methane, ammonium and sulfide, while Mn(II) can function as an electron source for manganese-oxidizing microorganisms for autotrophic denitrification and photosynthesis. The anaerobic redox transition between Mn(II) and Mn(IV) promotes a dynamic biogeochemical cycle coupled to microorganisms in water, soil and sediment environments. The discussion of reaction mechanisms, microorganism diversity, environmental influence bioremediation and application identify the research gaps for future investigation, which provides promising opportunities for further development of biotechnological applications to remediate contaminated environments.

There is an urgent need for the development of efficient and economical persulfate activators in persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes for wastewater treatment. Accordingly, in this work, sewage sludge from a wastewater treatment plant was carbonized at different pyrolysis temperatures in the range of 400–800 °C via a one-pot synthesis method, which was used to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Among the samples, biochar pyrolyzed at 800 °C (BC800) showed the best catalytic performance for the removal of SMX (85.3% in 60 min reaction). In the initial pH range of 5.0–11.0, PDS could be activated (0.75 g L−1) efficiently by BC800 for the degradation of SMX. Combined with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, quenching experiment, steady-state kinetics experiment and electrochemical results, the degradation of SMX in the BC800/PDS system was proposed to be a degradation mechanism involving electron transfer as the main pathway. Through the analysis of the intermediates, the possible SMX degradation pathways were predicted. This study provides new insights into the mechanism for the sewage sludge-derived biochar activation of peroxydisulfate and its potential applications for the treatment of SMX wastewater.

Nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) is critical for mitigating methane emission and returning reactive nitrogen to the atmosphere. The genomes of n-DAMO archaea show that they have the potential to couple anaerobic oxidation of methane to dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). However, physiological details of DNRA for n-DAMO archaea were not reported yet. This work demonstrated n-DAMO archaea coupling the anaerobic oxidation of methane to DNRA, which fueled Anammox in a methane-fed membrane biofilm reactor with nitrate as only electron acceptor. Microelectrode analysis revealed that ammonium accumulated where nitrite built up in the biofilm. Ammonium production and significant upregulation of gene expression for DNRA were detected in suspended n-DAMO culture with nitrite exposure, indicating that nitrite triggered DNRA by n-DAMO archaea. 15N-labeling batch experiments revealed that n-DAMO archaea produced ammonium from nitrate rather than from external nitrite. Localized gradients of nitrite produced by n-DAMO archaea in biofilms induced ammonium production via the DNRA process, which promoted nitrite consumption by Anammox bacteria and in turn helped n-DAMO archaea resist stress from nitrite. As biofilms predominate in various ecosystems, anaerobic oxidation of methane coupled with DNRA could be an important link between the global carbon and nitrogen cycles that should be investigated in future research.

Combining nitrate/nitrite dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) is a promising sustainable wastewater treatment technology, which simultaneously achieve nitrogen removal and methane emission mitigation. However, the practical application of n-DAMO has been greatly limited by its extremely slow growth-rate and low reaction rate. This work proposes an innovative M embrane B io T rickling F ilter (MBTF), which consist of hollow fiber membrane for effective methane supplementation and polyurethane sponge as support media for the attachment and growth of biofilm coupling n-DAMO with Anammox. When steady state with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6.00 h was reached, above 99.9% of nitrogen was removed from synthetic sidestream wastewater at a rate of 3.99 g N L−1 d−1. This system presented robust capacity to withstand unstable partial nitritation effluent, achieving complete nitrogen removal at a varied nitrite to ammonium ratio in the range of 1.10–1.40. It is confirmed that n-DAMO and Anammox microorganisms jointly dominated the microbial community by pyrosequencing technology. The complete nitrogen removal potential at high-rate and efficient biomass retention (12.4 g VSS L−1) of MBTF offers promising alternative for sustainable wastewater treatment by the combination of n-DAMO and Anammox.

Bisphenols (BPs) are distributed in worldwide as typical environmental hormones, which potentially harm the ecological environment and human health. In this study, four BPs, i.e., bisphenol A, bisphenol F, bisphenol S, and bisphenol AF, were used as prototypes to identify the intrinsic differences in degradation mechanisms correlated with the molecular structures in peroxydisulfate (PDS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Electron transfer was the main way of modified biochar to trigger the heterogenous catalysis of PDS, which can cause the degradation of BPs. Phenolic hydroxyl groups on bisphenol pollutants were considered as possible active sites, and the existence of substituents was the main reason for the differentiation in the degradation efficiency of various bisphenols. Results of ecotoxicity prediction showed that most intermediates produced by the degradation of BPs in the β-SB/PDS system, which was dominated by the electron transfer pathway, had a lower toxicity than the parent molecules, while the toxicity of several ring cleavage intermediates was higher. This study presents a simple modification scheme for the conversion of biochar into functional catalysts and provides insights into the mechanism of heterogeneous catalytic degradation mediated by modified biochar as well as the degradation differences of bisphenol pollutants and their potential ecotoxicity.

Electro-fermentation systems (EFSs) are an emerging technology capable of regulating microbial fermentation pathways by tuning oxidation-reduction potentials and electron flow. However, there is limited understanding of the bioenergy conversion and metabolic regulation of fermentative bacteria in EFSs. In this study, we investigated how electrode potentials in EFSs affect the metabolic products and global transcriptome expression of Ethanoligenens harbinense. The E. harbinense-inoculated anodic EFS (AEFS) with a poised potential of 0 V or the cathodic EFS (CEFS) with a poised potential of 0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl reference electrode) obtained the maximum H2 production of 1888–1986 mL/L-medium, which increased by 23–26% compared with open-circuit fermentation (OC-EFSs). The highest H2 yield of 1.190 ± 0.009–1.197 ± 0.001 mol-H2/mol-glucose was obtained by the AEFS0 and the OC-EFS. Ethanol production of AEFS-0.4 increased by 30.7 ± 13.3% compared with OC-EFSs. In addition, glucose uptake and cell growth in the EFS were enhanced with an increase in cellular energy supply. Transcriptome analysis revealed that overexpression of the [FeFe]-hydrogenase, ferredoxin, and rubredoxin genes in the AEFS with a poised potential of 0 V promoted the H2 production rate. Genes involved in electron transfer and reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) regeneration were upregulated in the AEFS, leading to more ethanol production. In addition, substrate transmembrane transport was suppressed by underexpression of adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-binding cassette (ABC) transporter system-related genes at lower or higher potentials. These results confirm that an EFS effectively regulates the metabolite spectrum of H2-producing bacteria by coordinating electron transfer, NADH regeneration, and substrate transmembrane transport to provide a flexible approach for improving bioenergy production by fermentative bacteria.

At present, the bioproduction of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) from waste activated sludge (WAS) has attracted worldwide attention due to the demand of carbon neutrality during waste treatment. Calcium peroxide (CaO2) has been reported to be an effective method for the solubilization of WAS and the accumulation of SCFAs, but the high reagent cost limits its industrial application. Therefore, free nitrous acid (FNA) was introduced into the WAS pretreatment system to assist with CaO2 for enhancing the disruption of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the subsequent acidogenesis process. The results showed that FNA and CaO2 synergistically enhanced EPS decomposition and the release of biodegradable organic compounds during pretreatment. The highest soluble chemical oxygen demand (3.1- and 2.6-fold higher compared to individual pretreatments at the same concentrations) after pretreatment and the highest SCFAs accumulation (2.0- and 6.4-fold compared to individual pretreatments at the same concentrations) after a 2-day fermentation period was observed in the FNA + CaO2 (0.15 g/g VSS) co-treated group. Therefore, the FNA + CaO2 (0.15 g/g VSS) co-treatment was determined to be the optimal strategy for ensuring the disintegration of the EPS matrix and enhancing the accumulation of SCFAs in pretreated sludge during anaerobic digestion.

Nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) is an important process linking nitrogen and carbon cycle. It is recently demonstrated that n-DAMO archaea are able to couple n-DAMO to dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). In this work, a mathematical model is developed to describe DNRA by n-DAMO archaea for the first time. The anabolic and catabolic processes of n-DAMO archaea, n-DAMO bacteria and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) bacteria are involved. The different impacts of exogenous and endogenous nitrite on DNRA and n-DAMO microbes are considered. The developed model is calibrated and validated using experimental data collected from a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and a counter-diffusion membrane biofilm bioreactor (MBfR). The model outputs fit well with the profiles of nitrogen (N) dynamics and biomass changes in both reactors, demonstrating its good predictive ability. The developed model is further used to simulate the counter-diffusion MBfR incorporating n-DAMO and Anammox process to treat sidestream wastewater. The simulated distribution profiles of N removal/production rates by different microbes along biofilm depth reveal that DNRA by n-DAMO archaea plays an important role in N transformation of the integrated n-DAMO and Anammox process. It is further suggested that the counter-diffusion MBfR under the investigated conditions should be operated at proper hydraulic retention times (HRTs) (i.e. 6h and 8h) with exogenous NO2− in the range of 0–10 mg N/L or at HRTs >3h with the absence of exogenous NO2− in order to achieve dischargeable effluent.

Inert gas is often used in the deoxygenation of microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) to maintain growth and viability of anaerobes. However, the effects of the gas atmosphere on hydrogen production and microbial community of MECs are often neglected. Here, the performances and biofilm microbiomes of MECs pre-sparged with different gases were compared. MECs pre-sparged with argon gas (Ar) yielded more hydrogen (3.73 ± 0.13 mol-H2/mol-acetate) and a higher hydrogen production rate (2.99 ± 0.17 L-H2/L-reactor-day) than MECs pre-sparged with N2 (3.41 ± 0.13 mol-H2/mol-acetate and 2.27 ± 0.28 L-H2/L-reactor-day, respectively). Microbiome analysis indicated that the relative abundance of Geobacter increased from 59.25% to 77.79% when the gas atmosphere in MECs shifted from N2 to Ar. Hydrogen production may have been catalyzed by nitrogenase from Geobacter and photosynthetic bacteria in MECs pre-sparged with Ar. These findings suggested that the gas atmosphere substantially influences the microbiome of anode biofilms and Ar sparging is most effective for enhancing hydrogen production in MECs.

Background MicroRNAs (miRs) have been suggested to be biomarkers to inform the diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD). We have previously shown that exosome-derived miR-139-5p had potential in differentiating between patients with MDD and healthy control (HC) subjects. Materials and Methods To validate the potential of exosome-derived miR-139-5p as a biomarker for MDD, here we recruited 30 patients with MDD and 30 HC subjects, and used TaqMan probes to detect serum exosomal miR-139-5p levels. Results The data showed that patients with MDD had significantly increased exosomal miR-139-5p levels when compared with controls. Correlation analysis suggested that sex, age, and body mass index did not significantly affect blood exosomal miR-139-5p levels in the tested subjects. The ROC curve showed that serum-derived miR-139-5p had reasonable performance in discriminating patients with MDD and HC subjects, with a sensitivity of 0.867 and specificity of 0.767, and the AUC was 0.807. Discussion Taken together, these results demonstrated that patients with MDD were accompanied by significantly increased blood exosomal miR-139-5p levels, and exosomal miR-139-5p is a promising biomarker for the diagnosis of MDD.

Sulfate dependent ammonium oxidation (Sulfammox) is a potential microbial process coupling ammonium oxidation with sulfate reduction under anaerobic conditions, which provides a novel link between nitrogen and sulfur cycle. Recently, Sulfammox was detected in wastewater treatments and was confirmed to occur in natural environments, especially in marine sediments. However, knowledge gaps in the mechanism of Sulfammox, functional bacteria, and their metabolic pathway, make it challenging to estimate its environmental significance and potential applications. This review provides an overview of recent advances in Sulfammox, including possible mechanisms, functional bacteria, and main influential factors, and discusses future challenges and opportunities. Future perspectives are outlined and discussed, such as exploration of microbial community structure and metabolic pathways, possible interactions with other microbes, environmental significance, and potential applications for nitrogen and sulfate removal, to inspire more researches on the Sulfammox process.

A novel method for fabricating air-cathodes was developed by assembling an activated carbon (AC) catalyst together with a waterproof breathable membrane (WBM) and stainless steel mesh (SSM) to reduce manufacturing costs of bioelectrochemical systems (BESs). WBMs made of different materials were tested in the assembly, including a hybrid of polypropylene and polyolefin (PPPO), polyethylene (PE), and polyurethane (PU), and compared against poly tetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-based cathodes. Results showed that the maximum power density of the activated carbon-stainless steel mesh-polyurethane (AC@SSM/PU) assembly was 2.03 W/m2 while that of conventional carbon cloth cathode assembly (Pt@CC/PTFE) was 1.51 W/m2. Compared to conventional cathode fabrication, AC@SSM/PU had a much lower cost and simpler manufacturing process. Illumina Miseq sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons indicated that microbiomes were substantially different between anode and cathode biofilms. There was also a difference in the community composition between different cathode biofilms. The predominant population in the anode biofilms was Geobacter (38–75% relative abundance), while Thauera and Pseudomonas dominated the cathode biofilms. The results demonstrated that different types of air-cathodes influenced the microbial community assembly on the electrodes.

Background Ethanol-type fermentation, one of the fermentation types in mixed cultures of acidogenesis with obvious advantages such as low pH tolerance and high efficiency of H2 production, has attracted widespread attentions. pH level greatly influences the establishment of the fermentation of carbohydrate acidogenesis by shaping community assembly and the metabolic activity of keystone populations. To explore the adaptation mechanisms of ethanol-type fermentation to low pH, we report the effects of initial pH on the physiological metabolism and transcriptomes of Ethanoligenens harbinense—a representative species of ethanol-type fermentation. Results Different initial pH levels significantly changed the cell growth and fermentation products of E. harbinense. Using transcriptomic analysis, we identified and functionally categorized 1753 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). By mining information on metabolic pathways, we probed the transcriptional regulation of ethanol–H2 metabolism relating to pH responses. Multiple pathways of E. harbinense were co-regulated by changing gene expression patterns. Low initial pH down-regulated the expression of cell growth- and acidogenesis-related genes but did not affect the expression of H2 evolution-related hydrogenase and ferredoxin genes. High pH down-regulated the expression of H2 evolution- and acidogenesis-related genes. Multiple resistance mechanisms, including chemotaxis, the phosphotransferase system (PTS), and the antioxidant system, were regulated at the transcriptional level under pH stress. Conclusions Ethanoligenens adapted to low pH by regulating the gene expression networks of cell growth, basic metabolism, chemotaxis and resistance but not H2 evolution-related genes. Regulation based on pH shifts can represent an important approach to establish and enhance ethanol-type fermentation. The complete gene expression network of ethanol fermentative bacteria for pH response provides valuable insights into the acidogenic fermentation, and offers an effective regulation strategy for the sustainable energy recovery from wastewater and solid waste.

This study proposed the membrane bioreactor–ultraviolet/chlorine (MBR-UV/Cl2) process for treating polluted surface water with pharmaceutical personal care product (PPCP) contamination. Results showed that MBR-UV/Cl2 effectively removed the organic matters and ammonia at approximately 80% and 95%. MBR-UV/Cl2 was used in the removal of sulfadiazine(SDZ), sulfamethoxazole(SMZ), tetracycline(TC), oxytetracycline(OTC), ciprofloxacin(CIP), ofloxacin(OFX), erythromycin(ERY), roxithromycin(ROX), ibuprofen(IBU) and, naproxen(NAX) at 12.18%, 95.61%, 50.50%, 52.97%, 33.56%, 47.71%, 87.57%, 93.38%, 93.80%, and 71.46% in which their UV/Cl2 contribution was 12.18%, 95.61%, 29.04%, 38.14%, 25.94%, 7.20%, 80.28%, 33.79%, 73.08%, and 23.05%, respectively. The removal of 10 typical PPCPs using UV/Cl2 obtained higher contributions than those of the MBR process, except OTC, ROX, and IBU. The UV/Cl2 process with 3-min hydraulic retention time and chlorine concentration at 3 mg/L effectively removed the trace of PPCPs. MBR-UV/Cl2 has the potential to be developed as an effective technology in treating polluted surface water with PPCP contamination.

Denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) coupled to anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is a promising technology for complete nitrogen removal with economic and environmental benefit. In this work, a model framework integrating DAMO and anammox process was constructed based on suspended-growth systems. The proposed model was calibrated and validated using experimental data from a sequencing batch reactor and a membrane aerated membrane bioreactor (MAMBR). The model managed to describe removal rates of ammonium (NH4+), nitrite (NO2-), and total nitrogen, as well as biomass changes of DAMO archaea, DAMO bacteria, and anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) in both reactors. The estimated parameter values revealed that DAMO archaea possessed properties of faster growth and higher biomass yield in suspended-growth systems compared to those in attached-growth systems (e.g., biofilm). Model simulation demonstrated that solid retention time (SRT) was effective in washing out DAMO bacteria, but retaining DAMO archaea and AnAOB in the MAMBR. The optimal SRT and nitritation efficiency (the ratio of the NO2- to the sum of NH4+ and NO2- in the MAMBR influent) were simulated so that 99% of total nitrogen was removed to meet the discharge standard. MAMBR further suggested to be operated with SRT between 15 and 30 days so that the optimal nitritation efficiency could be minimized to 49% for cost savings.

Photo-fermentative hydrogen production, the new energy production alternative, was greatly enhanced by formed biofilm. Experimental results indicated that a possible and effective altered system could transfer light to hydrogen. Proteins were significantly regulated, for example those related with nitrogenase, flagellin, EPS transportation and DNA duplication were up-regulated while those concerned photosystem were down-regulated. It revealed these changes of proteins contributed to positive activity of key enzymes, improved communication system and increased total light utilization efficiency thus leading to enhanced capacity of hydrogen production. Besides above metabolic changes inside the cells, EPS secreted by the bacteria played an important role in hydrogen production and its yield decided the release of hydrogen. When EPS descended to a lower concentration during biofilm formation, it meant carbon source for EPS synthesis was reduced, and more energy and reducing power could be transferred into hydrogen energy. More importantly, this work found that composition and structure of EPS were efficiently influenced by the formation of biofilm, such as benzene and O-H structure, secondary protein structure and the kinds of protein, which were important to stable biofilm and efficient hydrogen production. Therefore, final hydrogen yield was improved by altered protein and EPS resulted from biofilm formation. This study demonstrated that formation of biofilm is an efficient, ecological and attracting way to the future bio-hydrogen production.

Since there is high lignocellulose content in the cotton straw and cow manure mixture (MCC), the appropriate MCC pretreatment is important to promote the anaerobic digestion (AD) hydrolysis. This study mainly explored the effect of potassium ferrate (PF) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) pretreatments on MCC decomposition. PMS + PF co-treatment showed a higher reduction of total solid and volatile solid than PF pretreatment and PMS pretreatment. Hydrolysis of treated MCC indicated that the PF pretreatment was more effective to the release of organics than the PMS pretreatment and the PMS + PF co-treatment. However, the PMS + PF co-treatment resulted in a higher lignin removal rate (40.4%–50.5%) than the PMS pretreatment (30.8%) and the PF pretreatment (21.4%). The PMS1 + PF2 co-treatment (molar ratio of 1:2) acquired the optimal lignin removal rate and the release of organics among the PMS + PF co-treatment with different dosing ratio. Potential mechanism was that PF reduction products activated PMS to produce free radicals (SO4 −, OH), which attacked lignocellulosic components and promoted MCC decomposition. The PMS1 + PF2 co-treatment was deduced to be the optimal pretreatment method when considering MCC decomposition, biodegradability, and mass transfer in the bioreactor.

Bacterial Mn(II) oxidation plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of manganese and many trace metals. This study describes Mn(II) oxidation by two isolated manganese (Mn)-oxidizing strains that were identified and assigned as Brevibacillus brevis MO1 and Brevibacillus parabrevis MO2 based on physiochemical and phylogenetic characterizations. The ecological conditions influenced Mn(II) oxidation by both strains. Mn(II) stimulated the growth of strain MO2 while slightly inhibiting strain MO1. Mn(II)-oxidizing activity of two strains was enhanced with increase of initial pH, and maximum Mn(II)-oxidizing activity occurred at pH 8 for both strains (93.5%-94.0%). Brevibacillus showed the capability of mesophilic and psychrophilic Mn(II) oxidation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that the biogenic manganese oxides had an intermediate valence between 3 and 4. These results demonstrated that Brevibacillus, which is capable of oxidizing dissolved Mn(II), will be a suitable strain for exploring the mechanism of manganese oxidation in engineered and natural environments.
