2. Optimal preparation of high-entropy boride-silicon carbide ceramics

Abstract

High-entropy boride-silicon carbide (HEB-SiC) ceramics were fabricated using boride-based powders prepared from borothermal and boro/carbothermal reduction methods. The effects of processing routes (borothermal reduction and boro/carbothermal reduction) on the HEB powders were examined. HEB-SiC ceramics with > 98% theoretical density were prepared by spark plasma sintering at 2000 °C. It was demonstrated that the addition of SiC led to slight coarsening of the microstructure. The HEB-SiC ceramics prepared from boro/carbothermal reduction powders showed a fine-grained microstructure and higher Vickers’ hardness but lower fracture toughness value as compared with the same composition prepared from borothermal reduction powders. These results indicated that the selection of the powder processing method and the addition of SiC phase could contribute to the optimal preparation of high-entropy boride-based ceramics.

3. Synthesis of zirconolite-2M ceramics for immobilisation of neptunium

Abstract

Praseodymium-doped zirconolite ceramics targeting nominal composition Ca1-xPrxZrTi2-5x/3Al5x/3O7 (x ≤ 0.20, Δx = 0.05) were fabricated by a mixed oxide solid state reaction, at 1350 °C in air for 20 h. Praseodymium (Pr) was employed as a surrogate for neptunium (Np), with Al3+ co-accommodated to provide charge balance. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction analyses confirmed that zirconolite crystallised as the 2 M monoclinic polytype throughout the phase evolution, with no evidence of transformation to other polytype structures. Phase assemblage and microstructural data were consistent with zirconolite occupying a high fraction of the phase assemblage (>ca. 93 wt %), alongside a minor secondary perovskite phase at all levels of targeted Pr incorporation. Despite this, it was demonstrated near theoretical density formed through a solid-state fabrication route, and we therefore propose that, through analogy with the corresponding Pr solid solution, zirconolite may be a suitable candidate for the immobilisation of Np-bearing wastes.

Abstract

Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is characterized by a specific chromosome translocation involving RAR[Alpha] and one of four fusion partners: PML, PLZF, NPM, and NuMA genes. To study the leukemogenic potential of the fusion genes in vivo, we generated transgenic mice with PLZF-RAR[Alpha] and NPM-RAR[Alpha]. PLZF-RAR[Alpha] transgenic animals developed chronic myeloid leukemia-like phenotypes at an early stage of life (within 3 months in five of six mice), whereas three NPM-RAR[Alpha] transgenic mice showed a spectrum of phenotypes from typical APL to chronic myeloid leukemia relatively late in life (from 12 to 15 months). In contrast to bone marrow cells from PLZFRAR[Alpha] transgenic mice, those from NPM-RAR[Alpha] transgenic mice could be induced to differentiate by all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA). We also studied RARE binding properties and interactions between nuclear corepressor SMRT and various fusion proteins in response to ATRA. Dissociation of SMRT from different receptors was observed at ATRA concentrations of 0.01 [[micro]molar], 0.1 [[micro]molar], and 1.0 [[micro]molar] for RAR[Alpha]-RXR[Alpha], NPM-RAR[Alpha], and PML-RAR[Alpha], respectively, but not observed for PLZF-RAR[Alpha] even in the presence of 10 [[micro]molar] ATRA. We also determined the expression of the tissue factor gene in transgenic mice, which was detected only in bone marrow cells of mice expressing the fusion genes. These data clearly establish the leukemogenic role of PLZF-RAR[Alpha] and NPM-RAR[Alpha] and the importance of fusion receptor/corepressor interactions in the pathogenesis as well as in determining different clinical phenotypes of APL.

17. Synthesis of TiC–TiB2composite powders via carbothermal reduction and its reaction mechanism

Abstract

ABSTRACTTitanium carbide–titanium diboride (TiC–TiB2) composite powders were synthesised through a carbothermal reduction method by using titanium dioxide, boric acid, and different carbon sources (namely, carbon black, sucrose, and glucose) as starting materials. The thermal decomposition behaviour of the precursors was studied by thermogravimetry–differential thermal analyser. Phase compositions and morphologies of the synthesised products were characterised by X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. When n(Ti):n(B):n(C) = 1.0:2.5:5.0, the blended stock mainly formed TiB2with sucrose or glucose as a carbon source, whereas the stock produced TiC when carbon black was the source. At an optimum reaction temperature, the particles of the powders synthesised from carbon black as a carbon source were the smallest at approximately 100 nm. With increasing amount of boric acid in the precursor, the morphologies of the samples changed into less spherical particles, and more flaky grains and small particles with irregular structures were observed.

21. Transmission swtiching to relieve voltage violations in low load period.

Abstract

With the development of modern power system, extra-high voltage (EHV) AC transmission lines are widely used. Because of large capacitive charging, long EHV AC lines may cause voltage violations in low load period. The leading-phase operation of synchronous generators and switching on shunt reactors are two common measures to relieve voltage violations in low load period. In this paper, we propose that opening some EHV lines in low load period, namely transmission switching is a more economic and efficient measure. The problem of finding an optimal topology to relieve voltage violations in low load period is formulated as a mixed integer non linear programming problem. After some simplifications, the model is converted to an easily solved mixed integer linear program. The modified IEEE 30-bus test system is used to evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed method. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

22. Synthesis of rod-like ZrB2powders

Abstract

Rod-like ZrB2powders were synthesised at 1500°C in vacuum by boro/carbothermal reduction using ZrO2, B4C and graphite as the starting materials. During the heating process, the ZrB2grains primarily grow along the caxis to form a rod-like morphology without any heterogeneous catalyst. The final products are pure rod-like ZrB2particles, which are thought to be promising starting powders to prepare high performance ultrahigh temperature ceramics with unique microstructures such as textured one through tape casting process.

Abstract

This paper reports 14 dermatoglyphic parameters of 1000 Tibetans sampled in Tibet. Relatedness between Tibetans and Hans is much closer than that between Tibetans and Minnesotians in the USA. Compared with 12 nationalities. The Tibetan showed smaller difference with the Hani and the Han and greater difference with the Uygur. Comparison among the Tibetans living in different regions suggests that the Tibetans in Tibet have less difference with the Tibetans in Pingwu Region of Sichuan Province and much difference with the Tibetans in Gannan Region of Gansu Province. This report indicates that dermatoglyphic Parameters should not be used indifferently in different ethnic groups or even in different geographic groups of the same nationality.
