This article considers potential impacts the study of language, including ecolinguistics, can have on important real-world issues, and how linguists and others can involve themselves in addressing these issues for a sustainable future. The article is divided into two parts. The first part provides an illustrative study in which computer tools were utilized to investigate media reporting. The study examined the relative coverage of issues of basic human needs (food, clean water, and sanitation), which are part of the focus of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, in four major newspapers from Malaysia, Singapore, the UK and the US. Data were collected between November 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic was in its early days in terms of worldwide attention. During that time period, the pandemic received far more coverage in those newspapers than did the other issues, even though basic human needs greatly outweighed the COVID-19 pandemic as to deaths and other forms of suffering at the time of data collection, not to mention the toll on human life in the many years before the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Reasons for this severe discrepancy were explored with insights from professionals working in the media and related sectors. The skewed distribution of media coverage, we argue, reflects a crisis of responsibility and values. The second part of the article serves to highlight how those of us in language studies can make a contribution to the wider discussion about, among other important concerns, the role and responsibility of media in shaping the public’s views and actions on issues that are at the heart of sustainable development, and how we can be more socially engaged. We conclude by arguing that ecolinguists have much to contribute to the sustainability of the world, which ultimately requires a respect for the entire ecological community.

Tislelizumab may induce immune-related adverse events, especially adverse skin events. Early detection and timely intervention of cutaneous adverse events are crucial to improve patients' quality of life and reduce the disruption of therapeutic regimens. This study aimed to determine the clinical characteristics of cutaneous adverse reactions to tislelizumab and offer a reference for its rational clinical use. Case reports of cutaneous adverse reactions induced by tislelizumab were collected from the relevant databases (up to 31 March 2023). Patient age, sex, primary disease, medication use, occurrence of adverse skin conditions, treatment, and outcomes were recorded and descriptively analysed. A total of 13 patients were enrolled, including six males and seven females, aged 55–79 years, with a median age of 75 years and a mean age of 70.92 ± 8.84 years. The original disease was lung carcinoma in none patients, cervical carcinoma in two, and urothelial carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma in one each. The time from the initiation of medication use to the occurrence of cutaneous adverse reactions ranged from 7 to 177 days. Among the 13 patients, 10 showed improvement after drug withdrawal or symptomatic treatment. Two patients died (one died of disease progression and multiorgan failure, one died of acute coronary syndrome), and one patient's adverse skin reactions persisted without treatment. Tislelizumab-related cutaneous adverse reactions mostly occur after several days to months of treatment. In clinical practice, evaluation and monitoring should be strengthened. More attention should be paid to erythema and rashes, which may be signs of serious adverse skin reactions. Wheat powdery mildew, caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt), is one of the most consistently damaging diseases of common wheat worldwide and greatly affects crop productivity. Recently, several plant micro RNAs (mi RNAs) have been reported as gene expression regulators related to various adverse environments. However, up to now, less is known on the roles of mi RNAs in powdery mildew infection response of wheat. In this study, mi RNA expression patterns were investigated for identifying Bgt-responsive mi RNAs in wheat leaves using a plant mi RNA microarray platform. A total of 79 mi RNAs from 24 families were detected in wheat leaves. Among those, seven mi RNAs were further validated to be involved in wheat powdery mildew response and two of them have never been reported. In addition, their target expression profiles showed a negative correlation with that of the seven mi RNAs in mock- and Bgt-infected samples furtherly proved, which in turn as the robust evidence, that those seven powdery mildew-responsive mi RNAs are highly reliable. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), and this risk increases dramatically in those who develop low-grade dysplasia (LGD). However, there is currently no accurate way to risk-stratify patients with LGD, leading to both over- and under-treatment of cancer risk. Here we show that the burden of somatic copy number alterations (CNAs) within resected LGD lesions strongly predicts future cancer development. We performed a retrospective multi-centre validated case-control study of n=122 patients (40 progressors, 82 non-progressors, 270 LGD regions). Low coverage whole genome sequencing revealed CNA burden was significantly higher in progressors than non-progressors (p=2×10 -6 in discovery cohort) and was a very significant predictor of CRC risk in univariate analysis (odds ratio = 36; p=9×10 -7 ), outperforming existing clinical risk factors such as lesion size, shape and focality. Optimal risk prediction was achieved with a multivariate model combining CNA burden with the known clinical risk factor of incomplete LGD resection. The measurement of CNAs in LGD lesions is a robust, low-cost and rapidly translatable predictor of CRC risk in IBD that can be used to direct management and so prevent CRC in high-risk individuals whilst sparing those at low-risk from unnecessary intervention., Competing Interests: Competing Interests The authors are in discussions about potential commercialisation and clinical translation of the findings described here.
