Abstract

Combinatorial enumeration of various RNA secondary structures and protein contact maps, is of great interest for both combinatorists and computational biologists. Enumeration of protein contact maps has considerable difficulties due to the significant higher vertex degree than that of RNA secondary structures. The state of art maximum vertex degree in previous works is two. This paper proposes a solution for counting stacks in protein contact maps with arbitrary vertex degree upper bound. By establishing bijection between such general stacks and $m$-regular $\Lambda$-avoiding $DLU$ paths, and counting the paths using theories of pattern avoiding lattice paths, we obtain a unified system of equations for generating functions of general stacks. We also show that previous enumeration results for RNA secondary structures and protein contact maps can be derived from the unified equation system as special cases.

3. A semi-bijective algorithm for saturated extended 2-regular simple stacks

Abstract

Combinatorics of biopolymer structures, especially enumeration of various RNA secondary structures and protein contact maps, is of significant interest for communities of both combinatorics and computational biology. However, most of the previous combinatorial enumeration results for these structures are presented in terms of generating functions, and few are explicit formulas. This paper is mainly concerned with finding explicit enumeration formulas for a particular class of biologically relevant structures, say, saturated 2-regular simple stacks, whose configuration is related to protein folds in the 2D honeycomb lattice. We establish a semi-bijective algorithm that converts saturated 2-regular simple stacks into forests of small trees, which produces a uniform formula for saturated extended 2-regular simple stacks with any of the six primary component types. Summarizing the six different primary component types, we obtain a bivariate explicit formula for saturated extended 2-regular simple stacks with $n$ vertices and $k$ arcs. As consequences, the uniform formula can be reduced to Clote's results on $k$-saturated 2-regular simple stacks and the optimal 2-regular simple stacks, and Guo et al.'s result on the optimal extended 2-regular simple stacks., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

6. Cooperative Motion Planning for Persistent 3D Visual Coverage With Multiple Quadrotor UAVs

Abstract

In this paper, we address the multiple quadrotor UAVs trajectory planning optimization problem for large-scale, persistent, high-depth visual coverage tasks in three-dimensional (3-D) terrain environment. To minimize the overall energy expenditure of the UAVs for accomplishing a task, we set up an air-to-ground collaborative system which introduces base stations to hold and recharge UAVs. The system is formulated as an integer programming, and solved by a novel hierarchical reinforcement learning trajectory planning algorithm (RL-TP), in which the paths are obtained by reinforcement learning method, and then the trajectories are obtained by Bézier curve method. Both simulation and physical experiments show that RL-TP can effectively improve the efficiency and persistence of aerial visual coverage task. Note to Practitioners—While the multi-rotor UAV has been an important means for field monitoring, it suffers the problem of short battery life a lot. To make it more efficient and persistent, we use multiple UAVs and introduce ground base stations to charge the UAVs. The scenario is formulated as an air-to-ground collaborative system, and the motion planning strategy is to minimize the energy consumption. We propose a hierarchical collaborative coverage reinforcement learning trajectory planning algorithm (RL-TP) to solve it. We carry out both simulation and physical field experiments, and compare RL-TP with other popular methods. The experimental results show that the system is feasible and RL-TP performs well in both time efficiency and energy consumption. In future research, we will introduce unmanned ground vehicles to replace the stationary ground base stations to make the air-to-ground collaborative system more powerful and flexible.

Abstract

Health-promoting compounds, antioxidant and myrosinase activity in the sprouts of three broccoli cultivars under 40 mM, 80 mM and 160 mM NaCl were investigated. LangYan (LY) sprouts had the richest health-promoting compounds among the evaluated cultivars. Treatment of 40 mM and 80 mM NaCl significantly decreased the content of ascorbic acid and total phenolic as well as antioxidant activity, but did not affect glucoraphanin, sulforaphane and myrosinase activity compared to the control. However, 160 mM NaCl treatment significantly enhanced the level of total phenolic, glucoraphanin, sulforaphane, antioxidant and myrosinase activity, while significantly decreased ascorbic acid content. The results suggest that 160 mM NaCl treatment would enhance antioxidant activity and sulforaphane yield in broccoli sprouts. The health-promoting value of broccoli sprouts depends on plant genotype and could be affected by NaCl stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Germination is of importance to improving nutritional attributes of cereal grains for human consumption. The effect of germination time on major nutrient compositions and functional properties of sorghum flour was investigated in this study. Grains of Butanua, a new Sudanese sorghum cultivar, were germinated for 0, 1, 2, and 3 days to analyze their chemical and functional properties. The contents of starch, protein, oil, foaming stability, bulk density, and least gelation concentration of sorghum flour decreased, whereas oil absorption capacity, foaming capacity, and emulsion capacity and stability enhanced with an increase in germination time. Improved functional properties of sorghum flour by germination of the grains not only make it useful and suitable for various food processing formulations, but also improve the food product quality. This new finding will beneficially help develop innovative technologies, design new types of functional foods, and promote both sorghum production and relevant food processing industry in the future. Abstract

Changes in physiological and biochemical metabolism as well as glucoraphanin and sulforaphane contents of germinating broccoli seeds and sprouts were investigated in this study. Sprout length, root length, and fresh weight increased with germination time. Dry weight varied from 2.5 to 3.0 mg per sprout. A rapid increase in respiratory rate of sprouts occurred between 24 and 36 h of germination and then stayed at a high level. HPLC analysis found that glucoraphanin content increased at the early stage (0-12 h) of germination, decreased to a low value of 3.02 mg/g at 48 h, and then reached the highest value of 6.30 mg/g at 72 h of germination. Sulforaphane content decreased dramatically during the first day of germination, then increased slowly, and reached a high value of 3.38 mg/g at 48 h before declining again.
