This paper presents a review of the NTIRE 2024 challenge on night photography rendering. The goal of the challenge was to find solutions that process raw camera images taken in nighttime conditions, and thereby produce a photo-quality output images in the standard RGB (sRGB) space. Unlike the previous year's competition, the challenge images were collected with a mobile phone and the speed of algorithms was also measured alongside the quality of their output. To evaluate the results, a sufficient number of viewers were asked to assess the visual quality of the proposed solutions, considering the subjective nature of the task. There were 2 nominations: quality and efficiency. Top 5 solutions in terms of output quality were sorted by evaluation time (see Fig. 1). The top ranking participants' solutions effectively represent the state-of-the-art in nighttime photography rendering. A rank 3 graph is an orbital graph of a rank 3 permutation group of even order. Despite the classification of rank 3 graphs being complete, see, e.g., Chapter 11 of the recent monograph 'Strongly regular graphs' by Brouwer and Van Maldeghem, the full automorphism groups of these graphs (equivalently, the 2-closures of rank 3 groups) have not been explicitly described, though a lot of information on this subject is available. In the present note, we address this problem for the affine rank 3 graphs. We find the automorphism groups for finitely many relatively small graphs and show that modulo known results, this provides the full description of the automorphism groups of the affine rank 3 graphs, thus reducing the general problem to the case when the socle of the automorphism group is nonabelian simple.

Traceability, the ability to trace relevant software artifacts to support reasoning about the quality of the software and its development process, plays a crucial role in requirements and software engineering, particularly for safety-critical systems. In this chapter, we provide a comprehensive overview of the representative tasks in requirement traceability for which natural language processing (NLP) and related techniques have made considerable progress in the past decade. We first present the definition of traceability in the context of requirements and the overall engineering process, as well as other important concepts related to traceability tasks. Then, we discuss two tasks in detail, including trace link recovery and trace link maintenance. We also introduce two other related tasks concerning when trace links are used in practical contexts. For each task, we explain the characteristics of the task, how it can be approached through NLP techniques, and how to design and conduct the experiment to demonstrate the performance of the NLP techniques. We further discuss practical considerations on how to effectively apply NLP techniques and assess their effectiveness regarding the data set collection, the metrics selection, and the role of humans when evaluating the NLP approaches. In modern technology environments, raising users' privacy awareness is crucial. Existing efforts largely focused on privacy policy presentation and failed to systematically address a radical challenge of user motivation for initiating privacy awareness. Leveraging the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), we proposed design ideas and categories dedicated to motivating users to engage with privacy-related information. Using these design ideas, we created a conceptual prototype, enhancing the current App Store product page. Results from an online experiment and follow-up interviews showed that our design effectively motivated participants to attend to privacy issues, raising both the threat appraisal and coping appraisal, two main factors in PMT. Our work indicated that effective design should consider combining PMT components, calibrating information content, and integrating other design elements, such as visual cues and user familiarity. This paper reviews the NTIRE 2024 low light image enhancement challenge, highlighting the proposed solutions and results. The aim of this challenge is to discover an effective network design or solution capable of generating brighter, clearer, and visually appealing results when dealing with a variety of conditions, including ultra-high resolution (4K and beyond), non-uniform illumination, backlighting, extreme darkness, and night scenes. A notable total of 428 participants registered for the challenge, with 22 teams ultimately making valid submissions. This paper studies system identification of high-dimensional ARMA models with binary-valued observations. Compared with existing quantized identification of ARMA models, this problem is more challenging since the accessible information is much less. Different from the identification of FIR models with binary-valued observations, the prediction of original system output and the parameter both need to be estimated in ARMA models. We propose an online identification algorithm consisting of parameter estimation and prediction of original system output. The parameter estimation and the prediction of original output are strongly coupled but mutually reinforcing. By analyzing the two estimates at the same time instead of analyzing separately, we finally prove that the parameter estimate can converge to the true parameter with convergence rate $O(1/k)$ under certain conditions. Simulations are given to demonstrate the theoretical results.

In our era of rapid technological advancement, the research landscape for writing assistants has become increasingly fragmented across various research communities. We seek to address this challenge by proposing a design space as a structured way to examine and explore the multidimensional space of intelligent and interactive writing assistants. Through a large community collaboration, we explore five aspects of writing assistants: task, user, technology, interaction, and ecosystem. Within each aspect, we define dimensions (i.e., fundamental components of an aspect) and codes (i.e., potential options for each dimension) by systematically reviewing 115 papers. Critical transition and tipping phenomena between two meta-stable states in stochastic dynamical systems represents an important problem. In this work, we expand the methodology from the traditional Onsager-Machlup action functional, which typically identifies the most probable transition pathway between two meta-stable states, to investigate the evolutionary transition dynamics between two meta-stable invariant sets. To address this, we incorporate a comprehensive framework derived from Schr\"odinger bridge and Optimal Transport. In contrast to existing methodologies such as statistical analysis, bifurcation theory, information theory, statistical physics, topology, and graph theory for early warning indicators, we introduce a novel perspective on early warning signals within the realm of probability measures which enables the development of indicators grounded in action functionals. In order to validate our framework, we apply this methodology to the Morris-Lecar model, which exhibits the generation of the repetitive firing in certain neurons resulting from a saddle-node bifurcation on an invariant circle. By varying the current condition, we investigate the transition dynamics between a meta-stable state and a stable invariant set (the limit cycle or homo-clinic orbit) within Morris-Lecar model. Additionally, we analyze real Alzheimer's data from the ADNI database to explore early warning signals indicating the transition from healthy to pre-AD states. Scientific open-source software (OSS) has greatly benefited research communities through its transparent and collaborative nature. Given its critical role in scientific research, ensuring the sustainability of such software has become vital. Earlier studies have proposed sustainability strategies for conventional scientific software and open-source communities. However, it remains unclear whether these solutions can be easily adapted to the integrated framework of scientific OSS and its larger ecosystem. This study examines the challenges and opportunities to enhance the sustainability of scientific OSS in the context of interdisciplinary collaboration, open-source community, and multi-project ecosystem. We conducted a case study on a widely-used software ecosystem in the astrophysics domain, the Astropy Project, using a mixed-methods design approach. This approach includes an interview with core contributors regarding their participation in an interdisciplinary team, a survey of disengaged contributors about their motivations for contribution, reasons for disengagement, and suggestions for sustaining the communities, and finally, an analysis of cross-referenced issues and pull requests to understand best practices for collaboration on the ecosystem level. Our study reveals the implications of major challenges for sustaining scientific OSS and proposes concrete suggestions for tackling these challenges.

A simplex-based network is referred to as a higher-order network, in which describe that the interactions can include more than two nodes. Many multicomponent interactions can be grasped through simplicial complexes, which have recently found applications in social, technological, and biological contexts. The paper first proposes a competitive evolving model of higher-order networks. We introduce the difference equation analysis approach in the high-order network to make the analysis network more rigorous. It avoids the assumption that the degrees of nodes are continuous in the traditional analysis network. We obtain an analytical expression for the distribution of higher-order degrees by employing the theory of Poisson processes. The established results indicate that in a d-order network the scale-free behavior for the (d-1)-dim simplex with respect to the d-order degree is controlled by the competitiveness factor. In this paper, we prove that for infinitely many natural numbers $n$, this family contains $n^{\Omega(n^{2/3})}$ strongly regular $n$-vertex graphs $X$ with the same parameters, which satisfy the following condition: an isomorphism between $X$ and any other graph can be verified by the $4$-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm.

Open source software brings benefit to software community, but also introduces legal risks caused by license violations, which result in serious consequences such as lawsuits and financial losses. To mitigate legal risks, some approaches have been proposed to identify licenses, detect license incompatibilities and inconsistencies, and recommend licenses. As far as we know, however, there is no prior work to understand modification terms in open source licenses or to detect and fix violations of modification terms. To bridge this gap, we first empirically characterize modification terms in 47 open source licenses. These licenses all require certain forms of "notice" to describe the modifications made to the original work. Inspired by our study, we then design LiVo to automatically detect and fix violations of modification terms in open source licenses during forking. Early warning for epilepsy patients is crucial for their safety and well-being, in particular to prevent or minimize the severity of seizures. Through the patients' EEG data, we propose a meta learning framework to improve the prediction of early ictal signals. The proposed bi-level optimization framework can help automatically label noisy data at the early ictal stage, as well as optimize the training accuracy of the backbone model. To validate our approach, we conduct a series of experiments to predict seizure onset in various long-term windows, with LSTM and ResNet implemented as the baseline models. Our study demonstrates that not only the ictal prediction accuracy obtained by meta learning is significantly improved, but also the resulting model captures some intrinsic patterns of the noisy data that a single backbone model could not learn. With the rapid development of AI technology, we have witnessed numerous innovations and conveniences. However, along with these advancements come privacy threats and risks. Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) emerges as a key technology for privacy-preserving computation, enabling computations while maintaining data privacy. Nevertheless, FHE has limitations in processing continuous non-polynomial functions as it is restricted to discrete integers and supports only addition and multiplication. Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) operate on discrete spike signals, naturally aligning with the properties of FHE. In this paper, we present a framework called FHE-DiCSNN. This framework is based on the efficient TFHE scheme and leverages the discrete properties of SNNs to achieve high prediction performance on ciphertexts. Firstly, by employing bootstrapping techniques, we successfully implement computations of the Leaky Integrate-and-Fire neuron model on ciphertexts. Through bootstrapping, we can facilitate computations for SNNs of arbitrary depth. This framework can be extended to other spiking neuron models, providing a novel framework for the homomorphic evaluation of SNNs. Secondly, inspired by CNNs, we adopt convolutional methods to replace Poisson encoding. This not only enhances accuracy but also mitigates the issue of prolonged simulation time caused by random encoding. Furthermore, we employ engineering techniques to parallelize the computation of bootstrapping, resulting in a significant improvement in computational efficiency. Finally, we evaluate our model on the MNIST dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that, with the optimal parameter configuration, FHE-DiCSNN achieves an accuracy of 97.94% on ciphertexts, with a loss of only 0.53% compared to the original network's accuracy of 98.47%. For Open Source Software (OSS) projects, discussions in Issue Tracking Systems (ITS) serve as a crucial collaboration mechanism for diverse stakeholders. However, these discussions can become lengthy and entangled, making it hard to find relevant information and make further contributions. In this work, we study the use of summarization to aid users in collaboratively making sense of OSS issue discussion threads. We reveal a complex picture of how summarization is used by issue users in practice as a strategy to help develop and manage their discussions. Grounded on the different objectives served by the summaries and the outcome of our formative study with OSS stakeholders, we identified a set of guidelines to inform the design of collaborative summarization tools for OSS issue discussions. We then developed SUMMIT, a tool that allows issue users to collectively construct summaries of different types of information discussed, as well as a set of comments representing continuous conversations within the thread. To alleviate the manual effort involved, SUMMIT uses techniques that automatically detect information types and summarize texts to facilitate the generation of these summaries. A lab user study indicates that, as the users of SUMMIT, OSS stakeholders adopted different strategies to acquire information on issue threads. Furthermore, different features of SUMMIT effectively lowered the perceived difficulty of locating information from issue threads and enabled the users to prioritize their effort. Overall, our findings demonstrated the potential of SUMMIT, and the corresponding design guidelines, in supporting users to acquire information from lengthy discussions in ITSs. Stochastic Gumbel graph networks are proposed to learn high-dimensional time series, where the observed dimensions are often spatially correlated. To that end, the observed randomness and spatial-correlations are captured by learning the drift and diffusion terms of the stochastic differential equation with a Gumble matrix embedding, respectively. In particular, this novel framework enables us to investigate the implicit regularization effect of the noise terms in S-GGNs. We provide a theoretical guarantee for the proposed S-GGNs by deriving the difference between the two corresponding loss functions in a small neighborhood of weight. Then, we employ Kuramoto's model to generate data for comparing the spectral density from the Hessian Matrix of the two loss functions. Experimental results on real-world data, demonstrate that S-GGNs exhibit superior convergence, robustness, and generalization, compared with state-of-the-arts., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Comments within source code are essential for developers to comprehend the code's purpose and ensure its correct usage. However, as codebases evolve, maintaining an accurate alignment between the comments and the code becomes increasingly challenging. Recognizing the growing interest in automated solutions for detecting and correcting differences between code and its accompanying comments, current methods rely primarily on heuristic rules. In contrast, this paper presents DocChecker, a tool powered by deep learning. DocChecker is adept at identifying inconsistencies between code and comments, and it can also generate synthetic comments. This capability enables the tool to detect and correct instances where comments do not accurately reflect their corresponding code segments. We demonstrate the effectiveness of DocChecker using the Just-In-Time and CodeXGlue datasets in different settings. Particularly, DocChecker achieves a new State-of-the-art result of 72.3% accuracy on the Inconsistency Code-Comment Detection (ICCD) task and 33.64 BLEU-4 on the code summarization task against other Large Language Models (LLMs), even surpassing GPT 3.5 and CodeLlama. It is proved that the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension of the class of permutation graphs is at most 18. Previously it was only known that this dimension is finite (Gru{\ss}ien, 2017).

In the past two decades, a series of important results have been established in the empirical and theoretical modeling of complex networks, although considered are mainly pairwise networks. However, with the development of science and technology, an increasing number of higher-order networks with many-body interactions have gradually moved to the center stage of research when real-life systems are investigated. In the paper, the concept of higher-order degree is introduced to higher-order networks, and a bending power law (BPL) model with continuous-time growth is proposed. The evolution mechanism and topological properties of the general higher-order network are studied. The batch effect of low dimensional simplex is considered. The model is analyzed by using the mean-field method and Poisson process theory. The stationary average higher-order degree distribution of simplices is expressed analytically. The obtained analytical results agree well with those observed through simulations. In particular, this paper shows that the higher-order degree distribution of simplices in the network processes a property of bending power law, and the scale-free property of the higher-order degree is controlled by the higher-order edge, the simplex dimension and the feature parameter of the model. The BPL model of higher-order networks not only generalizes the NGF model, but also the famous scale-free model of complex networks to higher-order networks.

We present The Vault, a dataset of high-quality code-text pairs in multiple programming languages for training large language models to understand and generate code. We present methods for thoroughly extracting samples that use both rule-based and deep learning-based methods to ensure that they contain high-quality pairs of code and text, resulting in a dataset of 43 million high-quality code-text pairs. Our extensive evaluations on common coding tasks including code generation, code search and code summarization show that when fine-tuning Code Large Language Models on The Vault, such models outperform the same models trained on other datasets such as CodeSearchNet. In many scientific and engineering problems, noise and nonlinearity are unavoidable, which could induce interesting mathematical problem such as transition phenomena. This paper focuses on efficiently discovering the most probable transition pathway for stochastic dynamical systems employing reinforcement learning. With the Onsager-Machlup action functional theory to quantify rare events in stochastic dynamical systems, finding the most probable pathway is equivalent to solving a variational problem on the action functional. When the action function cannot be explicitly expressed by paths near the reference orbit, the variational problem needs to be converted into an optimal control problem. First, by integrating terminal prediction into the reinforcement learning framework, we develop a Terminal Prediction Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (TP-DDPG) algorithm to deal with the finite-horizon optimal control issue in a forward way. Next, we present the convergence analysis of our algorithm for the value function in terms of the neural network's approximation error and estimation error. Sketching out Graphical User Interface (GUI) layout is part of the pipeline of designing a GUI and a crucial task for the success of a software application. Arranging all components inside a GUI layout manually is a time-consuming task. In order to assist designers, we developed a method named GUILGET to automatically generate GUI layouts from positional constraints represented as GUI arrangement graphs (GUI-AGs). The goal is to support the initial step of GUI design by producing realistic and diverse GUI layouts. The existing image layout generation techniques often cannot incorporate GUI design constraints. Thus, GUILGET needs to adapt existing techniques to generate GUI layouts that obey to constraints specific to GUI designs. GUILGET is based on transformers in order to capture the semantic in relationships between elements from GUI-AG. Moreover, the model learns constraints through the minimization of losses responsible for placing each component inside its parent layout, for not letting components overlap if they are inside the same parent, and for component alignment. Our experiments, which are conducted on the CLAY dataset, reveal that our model has the best understanding of relationships from GUI-AG and has the best performances in most of evaluation metrics. Despite the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) as writing assistants, they are plagued by issues like coherence and fluency of the model output, trustworthiness, ownership of the generated content, and predictability of model performance, thereby limiting their usability. In this position paper, we propose to adopt Norman's seven stages of action as a framework to approach the interaction design of intelligent writing assistants. We illustrate the framework's applicability to writing tasks by providing an example of software tutorial authoring. The paper also discusses the framework as a tool to synthesize research on the interaction design of LLM-based tools and presents examples of tools that support the stages of action. Pre-trained language models for code (PLMCs) have gained attention in recent research. These models are pre-trained on large-scale datasets using multi-modal objectives. However, fine-tuning them requires extensive supervision and is limited by the size of the dataset provided. We aim to improve this issue by proposing a simple data augmentation framework. Our framework utilizes knowledge gained during the pre-training and fine-tuning stage to generate pseudo data, which is then used as training data for the next step. We incorporate this framework into the state-of-the-art language models, such as CodeT5, CodeBERT, and UnixCoder. The results show that our framework significantly improves PLMCs' performance in code-related sequence generation tasks, such as code summarization and code generation in the CodeXGLUE benchmark., Comment: Accepted to Findings, ACL 2023
