The acetylene conversion rate and vinyl chloride production capacity are the main economic indexes for vinyl chloride synthesis, and the reaction temperature is an important operating parameter to prevent the Hg active component from being loss. These three factors have not been taken into consideration simultaneously in the traditional optimization process, making it difficult to achieve optimization targets perfectly for industrial application. To overcome this problem, an efficient strategy framework was proposed based on a hybrid model. Compared with conventional paradigms, the proposed framework could not only reduce computational expense but optimize these two economic indexes with a constrained reaction temperature simultaneously. In addition, a machine learning method was used to conduct a feature analysis, which can reveal the potential interaction between different variables so key variables of this reactor could be identified. To demonstrate and verify this framework, multi-objective optimization involving multiple variables with constrained conditions for the industrial reactor was conducted from design and operation perspectives, respectively. The proposed strategy could provide optimal operational direction for the industrial reactor from these design and operation aspects, which contribute to the sustainable and highly efficient process development in this field. For the first section of an industrial vinyl chloride reactor, this strategy could realize significant improvement in the acetylene conversion rate from 81.34% to over 95.00% and in the vinyl chloride production capacity from 2.60 to above 3.40 mol/h in the operation scenarios, which can meet production requirements. In the present work, inexpensive and commercially available diethyltriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) was used as an initiator to catalyze the N-formylation reaction of CO2 with amines via the construction of C-N bonds in the presence of xanthone as the photosensitizer and PhSiH3 as the reducing agent. After a systematic study of various factors, the optimal conditions for the photocatalytic reaction were obtained: 2.5 mmol of amine, 2.5 mmol of PhSiH3, 10 mol% of DTPA, 20 mol% of xanthone, 1 mL of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), atmospheric pressure, and 35 W UV lamp irradiation for 48 h. Under the optimal conditions, the catalyst system afforded high performance for the N-formylation of amines (primary and secondary amines) and CO2, and the yields of the N-formylated products of dialkylamines were above 70%. Further studies exhibit that the catalytic system has a wide scope of substrate applications. For various alicyclic secondary amines, heterocyclic secondary amines, aliphatic primary amines, and aromatic primary amines, the corresponding N-formylation products can be obtained efficiently. In addition, the catalyst can be recycled by simple precipitation and filtration. After five cycles of recycling, there was no significant change in the catalytic and structural properties of DTPA. This paper describes the adaptation of an upper-division undergraduate seminar course taught at the University of Missouri in Columbia (MU) to the Summer School Program of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing (UCAS). The course "Scientific Writing in Chemistry" addresses an essential need for science students across the globe to receive experiential education in scientific writing. An assignment-based curriculum was developed to instruct students on best practices in writing a scientific paper and to educate students about the scientific publication process and peer review. The semester-long MU course that included three meetings per week and had low enrollment was adapted to 20 h UCAS block courses with much higher enrollments. The drastic differences in scale and mode of delivery posed numerous nontrivial challenges and required modifications of the teaching goals. Because of the short duration of the summer courses, the MU curriculum with its focus on "working on assignments and working with rubrics" was adjusted to a curriculum which is based on "working with posted samples of completed assignments and working with rubrics" at UCAS. Instruction on publication ethics was emphasized, and several adjustments were made to address cultural and language differences. Enrollment data and results of evaluations collected over five years (2011--2016) are presented to demonstrate the success of the adaptation. It is hoped that this paper will contribute to the wide and open dissemination of this "Scientific Writing" curriculum and, more generally, that the example of our course adaptation might encourage outstanding experts from many science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields to contribute in a significant way to international education.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials are capable of realizing the direct conversion between heat and electricity, holding a giant prospect in the sustainable development of modern society. Conductive polymers (CPs) are suitable for the preparation of TE materials given their low-cost, lightweight, flexible, and easy processing properties. With the accelerating pace of flexible composite development, there is intensive interest in their emerging applications in various aspects such as wearable electronics and thermoelectric sensors. In order to further improve the thermoelectric properties, a series of new methods have been proposed to prepare conductive polymer-based thermoelectric composites and improve their thermoelectric properties. In this review, we discuss the compositing methods, properties, and applications of conductive polymer-based TE composites. The challenges and future development directions in the design and application of conductive polymer matrix composites are also pointed out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reduction of CO2 is an important method to produce chemicals such as methanol, formic acid, formaldehyde, etc. In general, the reduction of CO2 is carried out at high temperatures and pressures with precious metals as catalysts, which is not favorable for industrial procedures. Thus, it will be very useful if researchers can find cost-effective catalysts for industrial application in CO2 reduction. In this work, commercially available ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was tested as a cheap, non-toxic, and recyclable catalyst to initiate the N-carbonylation reaction of CO2 with amines. After screening various reaction parameters, including temperature, pressure, time, solvent, and reducing agent, the optimal reaction conditions were obtained: 80 °C, 2 MPa, 6 h, 50 mmol% catalyst dosage, 1 mL DMSO, and 1:1 molar ratio of amine to reducing agent. Notably, further studies confirmed that EDTA could also be effective for N-formylation even under ambient conditions (0.1 MPa and room temperature). The suitability of the catalyst for 26 kinds of substrates (including aliphatic amines, aromatic amines, and alicyclic amines) and its reusability were also investigated, with satisfactory results. Scale-up research has been performed effectively with a high conversion of amine (83%) to obtain the mono-formylated product selectively. Finally, the mechanism of the reaction between amine and CO2 has been proposed via control experiments and compared with results in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recovery and utilization of low-grade thermal energy is a topic of universal importance in today's society. Photothermal conversion materials can convert light energy into heat energy, which can now be used in cancer treatment, seawater purification, etc., while thermoelectric materials can convert heat energy into electricity, which can now be used in flexible electronics, localized cooling, and sensors. Photothermoelectrics based on the photothermal effect and the Seebeck effect provide suitable solutions for the development of clean energy and energy harvesting. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of recent developments in photothermal, thermoelectric, and, most importantly, photothermal–thermoelectric coupling materials. First, the research progress and applications of photothermal and thermoelectric materials are introduced, respectively. After that, the classification of different application areas of materials coupling photothermal effect with thermoelectric effect, such as sensors, thermoelectric batteries, wearable devices, and multi-effect devices, is reviewed. Meanwhile, the potential applications and challenges to be overcome for future development are presented, which are of great reference value in waste heat recovery as well as solar energy resource utilization and are of great significance for the sustainable development of society. Composites of conducting polymer and single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are attracting great attentions in harvesting low‐grade waste heat. Prefabricated SWCNTs film used as the working electrode was placed at the liquid interface between the inorganic phase (dilute sulfuric acid solution) and the organic phase consisting of dichloromethane (DCM), aniline (ANI), and 3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT), together with a platinum wire (the counter electrode) and a silver chloride (AgCl/Ag) electrode (the reference electrode), to perform electrochemical polymerization of ANI and EDOT at the liquid interface. Thermoelectric (TE) composites of poly(ANI‐co‐EDOT) and SWCNTs were produced. Compared with composites from ultrasonic mixing and coating methods, the 10 wt% SWCNTs‐composites in situ formed in electrochemical polymerization have the highest power factor (PF) of 41.56 ± 3.58 μW m−1 K−2, higher than the PF values of the composites formed by other two methods. The work indicates that the TE properties of ANI‐EDOT copolymer/SWCNT (poly[ANI‐co‐EDOT]/SWCNT) composites prepared by electrochemical polymerization were better than those of the composites obtained by physical mixing the electrochemically synthesized poly(ANI‐co‐EDOT) with SWCNTs. Moreover, SWCNTs treated with sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) could further improve the TE properties of the composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The domain of the unknown function (DUF) gene families assumes pivotal roles in plant metabolic and stress responses. However, our comprehension of the tobacco DUF668 (NtDUF668) gene family and its specific reactions to heavy metal, drought, and salt stresses remain circumscribed. In the current investigation, a comprehensive genome-wide analysis of the NtDUF668 gene family was undertaken utilizing bioinformatics tools. The results unveiled a total of 20 members in the NtDUF668 gene family, denominated NtDUF668-01 to NtDUF668-20. Phylogenetic analyses indicated a closer genetic relationship of DUF668 genes between Nicotiana tabacum and Ipomoea batatas. The examination of gene structure and conservative motifs revealed a bifurcation into two major Clades, aligning with previous studies on DUF668 gene families from various plant species, emphasizing its highly conserved evolutionary mechanism across plants. The exploration of promoter regions of NtDUF668 genes revealed a plethora of cis-acting elements associated with abiotic and biotic stresses, light signaling, and phytohormones. Gene duplication events and selection pressure analysis disclosed the segmental duplication and strong purifying selection pressure during the evolution of NtDUF668 genes. Syntenic analysis indicated a relatively conserved evolutionary mechanism of DUF668 gene families within dicotyledons. Tissue-specific expression analysis suggested that NtDUF668 family members are potentially involved in root development, floral organ formation, and abscission. The expression patterns and qRT–PCR analysis of NtDUF668 genes implied the potentially functional involvements of NtDUF668s in response to multiple abiotic stresses. Furthermore, the stress-triggered member NtDUF668-08 exhibited specific nuclear localization. In conclusion, this genome-wide analysis illuminates the composition, phylogenetic relationships, and potential roles of the NtDUF668 gene family in abiotic stress responses. Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) is a key enzyme involved in CO2 assimilation during photosynthesis. Rubisco activation depends on the activity of Rubisco activase (RCA). We performed 3′/5′ rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to amplify the 3′ and 5′ end sequences of RCA genes from hickory. We obtained two full-length gene sequences, designated CcRCAα and CcRCAβ. The two corresponding cDNAs are divergent in both the translated and 3′ untranslated regions. The analysis of the genomic DNA sequences suggested that the corresponding mRNAs are transcripts of two different genes and not the products of a single alternatively spliced pre-mRNA. We examined the expression of CcRCAα and CcRCAβ in hickory leaves at various stages of development by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis. The results suggest that RCA genes play an important role in development and environmental responses. These results provide a basis for modulating RCA gene expression to improve the photosynthetic rate and plant growth in hickory.

Although numerous thermoelectric (TE) composites of organic materials and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have been developed in the past decade, most of the research has been related to polymers without much on organic small molecules (OSMs). In this work, benzothieno[3,2-b]benzofuran (BTBF) and its derivatives (BTBF-Br and BTBF-2Br) were synthesized and their TE composites with SWCNTs were prepared. It is found that the highest molecular orbital level and band gap (Eg) of BTBF, BTBF-Br, and BTBF-2Br gradually decrease upon the introduction of electron-withdrawing Br group on BTBF. These changes significantly improve the Seebeck coefficient and power factor (PF) of OSM/SWCNT composites. An appropriate energy barrier between BTBF-2Br and SWCNTs promotes the energy filtering effect, which further contributes to the enhancement of composites' thermoelectric properties. The composites of SWCNTs and BTBF-2Br with the smallest Eg (4.192 eV) afford the best thermoelectric performance with the room temperature power factor of 169.70 ± 3.46 μW m−1 K−2 in addition to good mechanical flexibility and thermal stability.
