Long-acting bronchodilators with rapid onset may relieve patients’ symptoms. In the Symptoms and Pulmonary function in the moRnING study, we prospectively compared the rapid onset bronchodilator profile of glycopyrronium (GLY) and tiotropium (TIO) during the first few hours after dosing in patients with moderate-to-severe COPD.Methods: Patients were randomized (1:1) to receive either once-daily GLY (50 µg) or TIO (18 µg) and corresponding placebos in a cross-over design for 28 days. The primary objective was to demonstrate the superiority of GLY versus TIO in area under the curve from 0 to 4 hours (AUC0-4h) forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) after the first dose. The secondary objective was to compare GLY versus TIO using the patient reported outcomes Morning COPD Symptoms Questionnaire 3 hours post-inhalation.Results: One-hundred and twenty-six patients were randomized (male 70.2%; mean age 65.7 years) and 108 patients completed the study. On Day 1, GLY resulted in significantly higher FEV1 AUC0-4h after the first dose versus TIO (treatment difference [Δ], 0.030 L, 95% confidence interval 0.004–0.056, P=0.025). Improvements in morning COPD symptoms from baseline at Days 1 and 28 were similar between GLY and TIO. Post hoc analysis of the FEV1 AUC0-4h by time point on Day 1 showed significant improvements in patients receiving GLY versus TIO at 5 minutes (Δ=0.029 L, P=0.015), 15 minutes (Δ=0.033 L, P=0.026), and 1 hour (Δ=0.044 L, P=0.014). Safety results were comparable between both treatments.Conclusion: The SPRING study demonstrates the superiority of GLY versus TIO in terms of superior bronchodilation in the first 4 hours after administration, thus extending the clinical data that support a faster onset of action of GLY versus TIO. 18. Contemporary Scientists and Their Interactions with Non-Scientists: Alternative Companion Stories for School Curricula

Abstract

Students learn more than science knowledge in a science classroom; they also acquire important messages about the purposes and contexts of science. Roberts (2011) calls these messages a companion story. In this article, we present a case study of high-profile Australian contemporary scientists to argue that there is a need to broaden the range of companion stories presented to students. A key companion story presently conveyed in schools is that the products of science are more important than the involvement of scientists in the construction of scientific knowledge. By contrast, the experiences and insights of the scientists in this case study shifts our understanding away from the idea that science is something that humans do--although that is true--to a deeper understanding that science is a discipline in which being human is important. We identify fresh companion stories that arise from these data and argue that the inclusion of such companion stories in the science curriculum is likely to better meet the needs of all citizens, scientists and non-scientists alike.

19. Studying the Landscape of Families and Children's Emotional Engagement in Science across Cultural Contexts

Abstract

It has been reported that in cross-cultural contexts, Western science content is often not used in everyday practice, and the learning of science is often viewed as difficult and having no social meaning (e.g., Aikenhead & Michell, 2011). It is suggested that the cultural relevance of everyday family practices and Western constructions of science concepts may be worlds apart, requiring new forms of brokering between schools and communities. But this expansive cross-cultural work says very little about everyday family life for supporting the cultural learning of science for the birth to five year period. In this paper we report on how everyday and abstract scientific concepts are meaningfully constructed in the context of culturally relevant life events (Vygotsky, 1987) for the early childhood period. We analyse the science concepts involved in the process of a South Sudan Dinka wedding in Australia, and explore these concepts through science related games with families who in turn introduce the concepts to their children as part of their playgroup activities. The results of the study indicate that finding Dinka words to name Western science concepts was challenging, and conceptualising everyday routines and cultural practices with scientific lenses amplified emotional engagement in science and generated new family discourses between children and their extended families. The study contributes to better understanding the relations between everyday cultural practices and Western science learning in the early childhood period.

21. Transformative Pedagogy: Dinka Playgroups as Spaces for Cultural Knowledge Productions of Western Science

Abstract

As increasing numbers of families migrate from a range of countries into communities where Western science is viewed as valued curriculum content, a need for understanding the cultural nature of teaching Western science has become more urgent. The study reported in this paper sought to investigate pedagogical responses to everyday and scientific learning of pre-school children from a group of Dinka (South Sudanese) families now living in a large Australian city. Adopting a cultural-historical methodology, we analyzed 42 h of digital video observations of 34 children, one teacher and 22 parents during their participation in a regular play group in their community. We identified four pedagogical approaches being used to support children's learning. The videos capture how the use of observational pedagogy, physically helping pedagogy [in the spirit of Barbra Rogoff's (Hum Dev 57:69-81, 2014. 10.1159/000356757) "pitching in"], verbally helping pedagogy, and embedded scientific narratives, supported new forms of cultural knowledge production by the children. The study suggests that together these relational dimensions of the pedagogy in the playgroup are "transformative" because they support genuine access and participation to other forms of cultural knowledge, such as Western science.

22. Alternative Conceptions: Turning Adversity into Advantage

Abstract

While a vast body of research has identified difficulties in students' understanding about forces and acceleration and their related alternative conceptions, far less research suggests ways to use students' alternative conceptions to enhance conceptual understanding of a specific fundamental concept. This study focused on distinguishing between students' conceptual understanding of the Newtonian concept of gravitational acceleration being the same for all objects and students' alternative conception that heavy objects fall faster. A multiple choice questionnaire was distributed to first year physics students for three consecutive years at a university in South Africa. The results indicate that changing the direction of motion and the physics quantity asked in paired questions revealed practically significant inconsistencies in students' reasoning and conceptions. This research contributes to the body of knowledge in proposing how the alternative conception of mass-related gravitational acceleration can be used in instruction to enhance conceptual understanding of the force-mass-acceleration relationship. Understanding of this relationship not only promotes conceptual understanding of the basic Newtonian concepts of the laws of motion which forms the critical foundation on which more advanced physics courses are built, but also contributes towards students' perception of physics as a set of coherent ideas applicable in all contexts.

26. Reflections on Teaching a First-Year Indigenous Australian Studies Subject

Abstract

Robyn Heckenberg and Andrew Gunstone team taught a first-year subject in Indigenous Australian Studies at Monash University for eight years. The significant majority of students undertaking this subject are non-Indigenous students who are studying the subject as an elective rather than as part of an Indigenous Studies course. In this paper, we discuss our experiences and reflections in teaching this subject, including our teaching philosophies and approaches, the various successes and challenges that we have encountered, and our views of the usefulness and potential of this subject in preparing students to genuinely work and engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.

Abstract

Rationale & objective: It is unclear whether the effect of canagliflozin on adverse kidney and cardiovascular events in those with diabetic kidney disease varies by age and sex. We assessed the effects of canagliflozin among age group categories and between sexes in the Canagliflozin and Renal Endpoints in Diabetes with Established Nephropathy Clinical Evaluation (CREDENCE) study. Study design: Secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial. Setting & participants: Participants in the CREDENCE trial. Intervention: Participants were randomly assigned to receive canagliflozin 100mg/d or placebo. Outcomes: Primary composite outcome of kidney failure, doubling of serum creatinine concentration, or death due to kidney or cardiovascular disease. Prespecified secondary and safety outcomes were also analyzed. Outcomes were evaluated by age at baseline (<60, 60-69, and≥70 years) and sex in the intention-to-treat population using Cox regression models. Results: The mean age of the cohort was 63.0±9.2 years, and 34% were female. Older age and female sex were independently associated with a lower risk of the composite of adverse kidney outcomes. There was no evidence that the effect of canagliflozin on the primary outcome (a composite of kidney failure, a doubling of serum creatinine concentration, or death from kidney or cardiovascular causes) differed between age groups (HRs, 0.67 [95% CI, 0.52-0.87], 0.63 [0.48-0.82], and 0.89 [0.61-1.29] for ages<60, 60-69, and≥70 years, respectively; P=0.3for interaction) or sexes (HRs, 0.71 [95% CI, 0.54-0.95] and 0.69 [0.56-0.84] in women and men, respectively; P=0.8for interaction). 33. Approaches to Learning in a Second Year Chemical Engineering Course.

Abstract

Previous findings from the study within which this research is located had uncovered students' approaches to learning in the context of a second year chemical engineering course. Using an analysis of students' reflections on their experience, the study has shown the existence of three approaches to learning in this context: an 'information-based' approach in which the intention is to gather and memorize definitions and formulae; an 'algorithmic' approach, in which the focus is on being able to do numerical calculations; and a 'conceptual approach', in which the main emphasis is on understanding, similar to the original formulation of the 'deep' approach (Marton and Saljo, 1976). In the research presented in this paper, students' responses to five conceptual probes based on a recycle system were analyzed, as well as their responses to a question regarding the purposes of related worked examples that were presented in class. This research supported the previous findings regarding the validity of the approaches that had been identified, gave an illustration of how these approaches manifested 'in action', and provided further evidence of the approaches used by individual students. 34. The Impact of Students' Perceptions on Their Metacognitive Development: A Case Study.

Abstract

This case study suggests that there are important links between students' perceptions and metacognitive development. David was one of five students who were interviewed in the second semester of a second year chemical engineering course in which the fundamental concepts of the discipline are first encountered. This paper assesses David's way of understanding supported by an examination of his perceptions and interpretations of a number of different aspects of the course. Specifically, analyzing David's experience has shown how it is possible for inappropriate perceptions to seriously hamper metacognitive development. Uncovering and engaging with student perceptions is therefore an important dimension of teaching for enhanced metacognition. (CCM)

Abstract

We report on findings from a qualitative study of Australian scientists whose work brings them into contact with the public. This research sought to understand how a school science curriculum could better represent the work of scientists today. We discuss the views expressed by our participant scientists about the importance of openness and open-mindedness in their work, including their engagement with the public. They described openness as an important characteristic of science. Our participants also see open-mindedness on the part of both scientists and members of the public as important for productive relationships. They see the development of such relationships as an essential facet of their work. The views expressed by these scientists provide a provocative insight into the ways in which contemporary scientists see their work and relationships with their communities. Their perspectives have important implications for approaches to teaching science in schools.

This study investigates the ideas and beliefs of a small group of high school science teachers about student observations in the science classroom. Student views on science classroom observations have been previously reported on, but teachers and their students' ideas about observation is a very little researched area in science education. There are a significant number of students that do not consider observation relevant in the science learning process. 40. Conceptual Change in Science through Collaborative Learning at the Computer.

Abstract

This paper describes a study of whether and how collaborative learning at the computer fosters conceptual change. A suite of computer simulation programs developed to confront students' alternative conceptions in mechanics was integrated into a grade 10 science class in a high school in Melbourne, Australia. A Conceptual Test was administered as a pre-, post-, and delayed post-test to determine students' conceptual change. Students worked collaboratively in pairs on the programs, carrying out predict-observe-explain tasks according to a set of worksheets. Conversational interactions of seven pairs in the class were analyzed for mode of collaboration by joint on-task engagement and by equality and mutuality of engagement. Collaborative sequences were categorized as co-constructions of shared understanding or peer conflicts. Inferences were made as to whether these led to conceptual change. Computer-supported collaborative learning provided students with experiences of co-constructions of shared understanding and peer conflicts, which led to conceptual change for those who were cognitively engaged in the tasks and prepared to reflect on and reconstruct their conceptions. To achieve long-term and stable conceptual change, this should be accompanied by students' personal construction and sense-making of the new understanding. Contains 43 references. (Author/PVD)

41. The Process of Conceptual Change in 'Force and Motion'.

Abstract

The process of students' conceptual change was evaluated during a computer-supported physics unit in a Grade 10 science class. Computer simulation programs were developed to confront students' alternative conceptions in mechanics. A conceptual test was administered as pre-, post-, and delayed post-tests to determine students' conceptual change. Students worked collaboratively in pairs on the programs carrying out predict-observe-explain tasks according to worksheets. While the pairs worked on the tasks, their conversational interactions were recorded. A range of other data were collected at various junctures during instruction. At each juncture, data for each of 12 students were analyzed to provide a "conceptual snapshot" at that particular juncture. All conceptual snapshots together provided a delineation of the students' conceptual development. Many students vacillated between alternative and scientific conceptions from one context to another during instruction; i.e., their conceptual change was context-dependent and unstable. The few students that achieved long-term conceptual change appeared to be able to perceive commonalities and accept the generality of scientific conceptions across contexts. 42. Observation in Science Classes: Students' Beliefs about Its Nature and Purpose.

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to explore the ideas and beliefs of high school science students (n=37) about the processes of observation in their learning of science, and how these students approached the task of observing during their science experiments. Findings include: many students saw observation as a teacher-directed process; observation was often seen to have a contextual dependency; when groups of students undertake laboratory experiments, the size of the student group is a significant variable impacting on students' approaches; many students undertaking high levels of intellectual engagement reported during observing; three problems commonly intruded on students' approaches to observing were the teacher, the specific experiment, and other students; students had no word to describe inferences and poor conceptions of inference; student time off task in laboratory work was common, conscious, and seen as justified; and the commonly reported gender differences in participation in laboratory work were observed. 43. Self-Study in Teaching and Research.

Abstract

This paper explores perspectives on self-study in teaching and in research through a longitudinal school-based professional development program for science teachers. The exploration focused on two broad perspectives: (1) self-study can be both personal and collaborative; and (2) self-study can be of teaching and of research. The professional development program in a large independent school in Melbourne (Australia) was initiated by a science faculty, who invited a tertiary educator to work with them in their classes to help them improve their pedagogy. Self-study was a valuable learning tool for individual teachers as learning from experience directly impacted on their own actions. From collaborative self-study, teachers began to learn from one another, began to take appropriate risks, and began to reconsider individual and "faculty directed" practice. Self-study of research was also explored as an individual and as a shared activity. The dual role of teacher and researcher in the professional development program allowed opportunities for interaction and for refining the skills of classroom observation, discussion, and debriefing, and the opportunity to research the development of teachers' pedagogies over time from a participant observer's perspective and as a collaborative researcher. 44. Conceptions of Quality Learning Held by High School and University Physics Teachers.

Abstract

In order to improve physics education some believe that it is necessary to consider teachers' view of quality learning in a specific content context. This report was developed to provide descriptions and comparisons of the conceptions of quality learning held by twelfth grade teachers (n=14) and academics of physics. Results revealed that among the high school teachers was a widespread acceptance of the value of many of the features associated with quality learning (e.g. the importance of integrating and linking for quality learning. A clear exception to this is for the item labeled "students taking responsibility for their own learning." Only six of the fourteen secondary respondents made comments relevant to this issue, and most of these were in the context of experimental work and/or affective dimensions of physics learning. The academics on the other hand expressed views different from those accepted by the study as quality learning. The most collective feature of the views of this group is that they tend to be strongly focused by what their students could not do. The researchers' conception of quality learning was, implicitly, rejected as being beyond the current abilities of students. (ZWH)

45. Developing Self-Assessment Skills in Grade 3 Science and Technology: The Importance of Longitudinal Studies of Learning.

Abstract

A year-long study in 1991 that aimed to develop self-assessment skills in one third-grade class in Australia is reported. The roles that the length and naturalistic features of the study played in the success of skill development are explored. The class contained 20 students, ages 8-9 years, present for the whole school year (four 11-week terms). Selecting a specific curriculum area made planning and post-teaching reflection more manageable for the teacher. Science and technology was chosen for teacher interest and its congruence with the research aims. A self-assessment questionnaire was developed early in the year, based on ideas that students had about the skills they needed in science and technology. Students were introduced to concept maps and learned to produce them. Additional self-assessment was recorded in self-assessment graphs created by students. Specific self-assessment concepts and techniques introduced during each term are detailed. Students accepted the self-assessment tasks as teaching and learning strategies in their own right. Student awareness and use of skills in these class activities were substantially enhanced. The teacher's role changed as students became more proficient at self-assessment, until the teacher was functioning as a delegator, rather than as a dominating instructor. 46. Interplay between Research and Practice: A Case Study of a Preservice Teacher Education Course.

Abstract

This case study describes a preservice program for prospective high school science teachers at Monash University in Victoria, Australia. The program views student teaching as only the first stage of career-long professional development, promotes the notion of the reflective practitioner, maximizes student teachers' contacts with school pupils and teachers, and defines pedagogy with a focus on constructivist research. The preservice program has evolved in response to research and continues to evolve; a considerable proportion of the research had been conducted as part of this program. The research-derived principles underlying the preservice program are considered. Salient issues in the research-practice interplay are discussed, including the requirements of professional registration to teach in Victoria, the problem of some faculty members wanting to abandon preservice teacher education, low academic status of preservice teacher education, and isolation of preservice from ongoing professional development. 47. Conceptual Change in Teacher Education: The Centrality of Metacognition.

Abstract

The paper examines conceptual change in teacher education at Monash University (Australia) discussing approaches to promotion of conceptual change and conceptions of metacognition. At Monash University the student teacher is considered a learner who actively constructs views of teaching and learning based on personal experiences and who is shaped by previously constructed conceptions, perceptions, attributes, and skills. The discussion focuses on preservice teacher education, taking information from a 1-year, postdegree program for prospective secondary teachers. Examples are taken from a 10-month inservice program. The preservice program includes two foundation subjects, two methods subjects, and various technical service courses. Teaching practice is in three blocks with another week of visits to practice schools. An explicit constructivist perspective runs through the experiences. The three areas in which conceptual change is significant for student teachers are: beliefs about teaching and learning and roles appropriate for teachers and learners; beliefs about the discipline content and skills students will teach; and student teachers' beliefs about themselves. Examples of approaches in the first two of the three areas are provided and the consequences of the approaches are discussed. Seven principles fundamental to the promotion of conceptual change are contrasted with seven general issues which provide direction for actual preservice classroom practice. (SM)
