Artificial intelligence (AI) methods have been proposed for the prediction of social behaviors which could be reasonably understood from patient-reported information. This raises novel ethical concerns about respect, privacy, and control over patient data. Ethical concerns surrounding clinical AI systems for social behavior verification can be divided into two main categories: (1) the potential for inaccuracies/biases within such systems, and (2) the impact on trust in patient-provider relationships with the introduction of automated AI systems for fact-checking, particularly in cases where the data/models may contradict the patient. Additionally, this report simulated the misuse of a verification system using patient voice samples and identified a potential LLM bias against patient-reported information in favor of multi-dimensional data and the outputs of other AI methods (i.e., AI self-trust). Confined electron systems, such as 2D electron gases (2DEGs), 2D materials, or topological insulators show great technological promise but their susceptibility to defects often results in nanoscale inhomogeneities with unclear origins. Scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) is useful to investigate buried confined electron systems non-destructively with nanoscale resolution, however, a clear separation of carrier concentration and mobility was often impossible in s-SNOM. Here, we predict a previously inaccessible characteristic "fingerprint" response of the prototypical LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ 2DEG, and verify this using a state-of-the-art tunable narrow-band laser in mid-infrared cryo-s-SNOM at 8 K. Our modelling allows us to separate the influence of carrier concentration and mobility on fingerprint spectra and to characterize 2DEG inhomogeneities on the nanoscale. This spatially resolved information about the local electronic properties can be used to identify the origin of inhomogeneities in confined electron systems, making the s-SNOM fingerprint response a valuable tool for nanoelectronics and quantum technology.

While artificially photonic materials are typically highly ordered, photonic structures in many species of birds and insects do not possess a long-range order. Studying their order-disorder interplay sheds light on the origin of the photonic band gap. Here, we investigated the scale morphology of the Anoplophora graafi longhorn beetle. Combining small-angle X-ray scattering and slice-and-view FIB-SEM tomography with molecular dynamics and optical simulations, we characterised the chitin sphere assemblies within blue and green. A. graafi scales. The low volume fraction of spheres and the number of their nearest neighbours are incompatible with any known close-packed sphere morphology. A short-range diamond lattice with long-range disorder best describes the sphere assembly, which will inspire the development of new colloid-based photonic materials.

Recent years have shown a rapid adoption of residential solar PV with increased self-consumption and self-sufficiency levels in Europe. A major driver for their economic viability is the electricity tax exemption for the consumption of self-produced electricity. This leads to large residential PV capacities and partially overburdened distribution grids. Furthermore, the tax exemption that benefits wealthy households that can afford capital-intense investments in solar panels in particular has sparked discussions about energy equity and the appropriate taxation level for self-consumption. This study investigates the implementation of uniform electricity taxes on all consumption, irrespective of the origin of the production, by means of a case study of 155,000 hypothetical Danish prosumers. The results show that the new taxation policy redistributes costs progressively across household sizes. As more consumption is taxed, the tax level can be reduced by 38%, leading to 61% of all households seeing net savings of up to 23% off their yearly tax bill. High-occupancy houses save an average of 116 Euro per year at the expense of single households living in large dwellings who pay 55 Euro per year more. Implementing a uniform electricity tax in combination with a reduced overall tax level can (a) maintain overall tax revenues and (b) increase the interaction of batteries with the grid at the expense of behind-the-meter operations. In the end, the implicit cross-subsidy is removed by taxing self-consumption uniformly, leading to a cost redistribution supporting occupant-dense households and encouraging the flexible behavior of prosumers. Block copolymers are recognised as a valuable platform for creating nanostructured materials with unique properties. Morphologies formed by block copolymer self-assembly can be transferred into a wide range of inorganic materials, enabling applications including energy storage and metamaterials. However, imaging of the underlying, often complex, nanostructures in large volumes has remained a challenge, limiting progress in materials development. Taking advantage of recent advances in X-ray nanotomography, we non-invasively imaged exceptionally large volumes of nanostructured soft materials at high resolution, revealing a single diamond morphology in a triblock terpolymer composite network. This morphology, which is ubiquitous in nature, has so far remained elusive in block copolymers, despite its potential to create materials with large photonic bandgaps. The discovery was made possible by the precise analysis of distortions in a large volume of the self-assembled diamond network, which are difficult to unambiguously assess using traditional characterisation tools. We anticipate that high-resolution X-ray nanotomography, which allows imaging of much larger sample volumes than electron-based tomography, will become a powerful tool for the quantitative analysis of complex nanostructures and that structures such as the triblock terpolymer-directed single diamond will enable the generation of advanced multicomponent composites with hitherto unknown property profiles., Comment: updated reference 38; added reference 40; corrected name of one author; corrected one affiliation; corrected legend in Extended Data Fig. 3

Developing new electricity grid tariffs in the context of household electrification raises old questions about who pays for what and to what extent. When electric vehicles (EVs) and heat pumps (HPs) are owned primarily by households with higher financial status than others, new tariff designs may clash with the economic argument for efficiency and the political arguments for fairness. This article combines tariff design and redistributive mechanisms to strike a balance between time-differentiated signals, revenue stability for the utility, limited grid costs for vulnerable households, and promoting electrification. We simulate the impacts of this combination on 1.4 million Danish households (about 50% of the country's population) and quantify the cross-subsidization effects between groups. With its unique level of detail, this study stresses the spillover effects of tariffs. Residential electrification of transport and heat is changing consumption and its characteristics significantly. Previous studies have demonstrated the impact of socio-techno-economic determinants on residential consumption. However, they fail to capture the distributional characteristics of such consumer groups, which impact network planning and flexibility assessment. Using actual residential electricity consumption profile data for 720,000 households in Denmark, we demonstrate that heat pumps are more likely to influence aggregated peak consumption than electric vehicles. At the same time, other socio-economic factors, such as occupancy, dwelling area and income, show little impact. Comparing the extrapolation of a comprehensive rollout of heat pumps or electric vehicles indicates that the most common consumer category deploying heat pumps has 14% more maximum consumption during peak load hours, 46% more average consumption and twice the higher median compared to households owning an electric vehicle. Electric vehicle show already flexibility with coincidence factors that ranges between 5-15% with a maximum of 17% whereas heat pumps are mostly baseload. This paper investigates volumetric grid tariff designs under consideration of different pricing mechanisms and resulting cost allocation across socio-techno-economic consumer categories. In a case study of 1.56 million Danish households divided into 90 socio-techno-economic categories, we compare three alternative grid tariffs and investigate their impact on annual electricity bills. The results of our design consisting of a time-dependent threshold penalizing individual peak consumption and a system peak tariff show (a) a range of different allocations that distribute the burden of additional grid costs across both technologies and (b) strong positive outcomes, including reduced expenses for lower-income groups and smaller households., Comment: 30 pages, 18 figures, journal article

This paper analyses a classical and a quantum annealing approach to compute the minimum deployment of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) hardware in a tier 1 provider network. The ensemble of QKD systems needs to be able to exchange as many encryption keys between all network nodes in order to encrypt the data payload, which is defined by traffic demand matrices. Redundancy and latency requirements add additional boundary conditions. The result of the optimization problem yields a classical heuristic network planners may utilize for planning future QKD quantum networks.

Determining the development of Germany's energy system by taking the energy transition objectives into account is the subject of a series of studies. Since their assumptions and results play a significant role in the political energy debate for understanding the role of hydrogen and synthetic energy carriers, a better discussion is needed. This article provides a comparative assessment of published transition pathways for Germany to assess the role and advantages of hydrogen and synthetic energy carriers. Twelve energy studies were selected and 37 scenarios for the years 2030 and 2050 were evaluated. Despite the variations, the two carriers will play an important future role. While their deployment is expected to have only started by 2030 with a mean demand of 91 TWh/a (4% of the final energy demand) in Germany, they will be an essential part by 2050 with a mean demand of 480 TWh/a (24% of the final energy demand). A moderately positive correlation (0.53) between the decarbonisation targets and the share of hydrogen-based carriers in final energy demand underlines the relevance for reaching the climate targets. Additionally, value creation effects of about 5 bn EUR/a in 2030 can be expected for hydrogen-based carriers. By 2050, these effects will increase to almost 16 bn EUR/a. Hydrogen is expected to be mainly produced domestically while synthetic fuels are projected to be mostly imported. Despite of all the advantages, the construction of the facilities is associated with high costs which should be not neglected in the discussion.

Recent improvements in Extended Reality (XR) technology created an increase in XR products and solutions in the industry, while raising new requirements for new or improved architectural concepts. This need can be particularly complex as XR applications often relate both to 3D geometric rendering and multimedia paradigms. This paper outlines the main concepts relevant to XR, both from a game engineering and multimedia streaming system perspective. XR requires new metadata and media/game orchestration to allow complex interaction between users, objects, and (volumetric) multimedia content, which also results in new requirements on synchronisation (i.e., for global object state and positioning). Furthermore, the paper presents the functional blocks needed in new XR system architectures and how they will glue both (game and media) spaces together. The discussion of functional components and architecture relates to the ongoing activities in relevant standardisation bodies like Khronos, MPEG, and 3GPP. To make XR successful on the long term, the industry needs to agree on interoperable solutions and how to merge both game and media paradigms to allow complex multi-user XR applications.

We present a scalable star-shaped quantum key distribution (QKD) optical fiber network. We use wavelength-division demultiplexing (WDM) of broadband photon pairs to establish key exchange between multiple pairs of participants simultaneously. Our QKD system is the first entanglement-based network of four participants using BBM92 time-bin coding and the first network achieving timing synchronization solely by clock recovery based on the photon arrival times. We demonstrate simultaneous bipartite key exchange between any possible combination of participants and show that the quantum bit error rate (QBER) itself can be used to stabilize the phase in the interferometers by small temperature adjustments. The key distribution is insensitive to polarization fluctuations in the network, enabling key distribution using deployed fibers even under challenging environmental conditions. We show that our network can be readily extended to 34 participants by using a standard arrayed-waveguide grating for WDM with 100 GHz channel spacing and that reconfigurable network connections are possible with a wavelength-selective switch. In a field test we demonstrate secure key rates of 6.3 bit/s with a QBER of 4.5% over a total fiber length of 108 km with 26.8 km of deployed fiber between two participants with high stability. Our system features a relatively simple design of the receiver modules and enables scaling QKD networks without a trusted nodes to distances up to more than 100 km and to more than 100 users. A key element to tailor the properties of magnetic multilayers is the coupling between the individual magnetic layers. In case of skyrmion hosting multilayers, coupling of skyrmions across the magnetic layers is highly desirable. Here the magnetic interlayer coupling was studied in epitaxial all-oxide heterostructures of ferromagnetic perovskite SrRuO$_3$ layers separated by spacers of the strong spin-orbit coupling oxide SrIrO$_3$. This combination of oxide layers is being discussed as a potential candidate system to host N\'{e}el skyrmions. First order reversal curve (FORC) measurements were performed in order to distinguish between magnetic switching processes of the individual layers and to disentangle the signal of soft magnetic impurities from the samples$'$ signal. Additionally, FORC investigations enabled to determine whether the coupling between the magnetic layers is ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic. The observed interlayer coupling strength was weak for all the heterostructures, with SrIrO$_3$ spacers between 2 monolayers and 12 monolayers thick., Comment: 22 pages

We study the effects of pion and sigma meson backcoupling on the chiral order parameters and the QCD phase diagram and determine their effect on the location of the chiral critical endpoint. To this end, we solve a coupled set of truncated Dyson--Schwinger equations for Landau gauge quark and gluon propagators with $N_f=2+1$ dynamical quark flavors and explicitly backcoupled mesons. The corresponding meson bound-state properties and the quark-meson Bethe--Salpeter vertices are obtained from their homogeneous Bethe--Salpeter equation. We find chiral-restoration effects of the pion and/or sigma meson backcoupling and observe a (small) shift of the critical endpoint towards smaller chemical potentials. The curvature of the chiral crossover line decreases. Our results indicate that the location of the critical endpoint in the phase diagram is mainly determined by the microscopic degrees of freedom of QCD (in contrast to its critical properties)., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Lateral inhomogeneities in the formation of 2-dimensional electron gases (2DEG) directly influence their electronic properties. Understanding their origin is an important factor for fundamental interpretations, as well as high quality devices. Here, we studied the local formation of the buried 2DEG at LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) interfaces grown on STO (100) single crystals with partial TiO2 termination, utilizing in-situ local conductivity atomic force microscopy (LC-AFM) and scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM). Using substrates with different degrees of chemical surface termination, we can link the resulting interface chemistry to an inhomogeneous 2DEG formation. In conductivity maps recorded by LC-AFM, a significant lack of conductivity is observed at topographic features, indicative of a local SrO/AlO2 interface stacking order, while significant local conductivity can be probed in regions showing TiO2/LaO interface stacking order. These results could be corroborated by s SNOM, showing a similar contrast distribution in the optical signal which can be linked to the local electronic properties of the material. The results are further complimented by low-temperature conductivity measurements, which show an increasing residual resistance at 5 K with increasing portion of insulating SrO terminated areas. Therefore, we can correlate the macroscopic electrical behavior of our samples to its nanoscopic structure. Using proper parameters, 2DEG mapping can be carried out without any visible alteration of sample properties, proving LC AFM and s SNOM to be viable and destruction-free techniques for the identification of local 2DEG formation. Furthermore, applying LC AFM and s SNOM in this manner opens the exciting prospect to link macroscopic low temperature transport to its nanoscopic origin.
