1. Distributed Event-Based Learning via ADMM

Abstract

We consider a distributed learning problem, where agents minimize a global objective function by exchanging information over a network. Our approach has two distinct features: (i) It substantially reduces communication by triggering communication only when necessary, and (ii) it is agnostic to the data-distribution among the different agents. We can therefore guarantee convergence even if the local data-distributions of the agents are arbitrarily distinct. We analyze the convergence rate of the algorithm and derive accelerated convergence rates in a convex setting. We also characterize the effect of communication drops and demonstrate that our algorithm is robust to communication failures. The article concludes by presenting numerical results from a distributed LASSO problem, and distributed learning tasks on MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets. The experiments underline communication savings of 50% or more due to the event-based communication strategy, show resilience towards heterogeneous data-distributions, and highlight that our approach outperforms common baselines such as FedAvg, FedProx, and FedADMM., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures

5. A Novel Turkish Learning Environment for Foreign Primary School Students: The Educational Digital Game 'Journey to Turkish'

Abstract

The present study aimed to discuss the development of an educational digital game for Turkish language instruction as a second language to foreign primary school students. First, the correlation between digital games and education was discussed, the learning and motivational theories fundamental to the educational digital games were investigated, the educational digital game design models and educational digital games in second language instruction were addressed. Finally, the development of the educational digital game "Journey to Turkish", which was based on the spiral educational game design model for the instruction of Turkish language to foreign primary school students, was detailed. The "Journey to Turkish" game was developed in four stages: analysis, design, development-implementation and evaluation; the process was based on the constructivist learning theory and social cognitive learning approach, a cognitive learning theory, flow theory, a motivational theory, and ARCS-V model. The game "Journey to Turkish," a three-dimensional, single player, task-based role-playing game was developed on the Unity 3D platform. The game includes seven stages, each part corresponds to the themes in the Turkish A1 language level. In the game, the player visits seven cities, namely Eskisehir, Çanakkale, Nevsehir, Konya, Adiyaman, Izmir and Istanbul, and collects certain cultural items by completing reading and writing tasks.

11. Models for irreducible representations of the symplectic algebra using Dirac-type operators

Abstract

In this paper we will study both the finite and infinite-dimensional representations of the symplectic Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sp}(2n)$ and develop a polynomial model for these representations. This means that we will associate a certain space of homogeneous polynomials in a matrix variable, intersected with the kernel of $\mathfrak{sp}(2n)$-invariant differential operators related to the symplectic Dirac operator with every irreducible representation of $\mathfrak{sp}(2n)$. We will show that the systems of symplectic Dirac operators can be seen as generators of parafermion algebras. As an application of these new models, we construct a symplectic analogue of the Rarita-Schwinger operator using the theory of transvector algebras.

12. A Hermitian refinement of symplectic Clifford analysis

Abstract

In this paper we develop the Hermitian refinement of symplectic Clifford analysis, by introducing a complex structure $\mathbb{J}$ on the canonical symplectic manifold $(\mathbb {R}^{2n},\omega_0)$. This gives rise to two symplectic Dirac operators $D_s$ and $D_t$ (in the sense of Habermann), leading to a $\mathfrak{u}(n)$-invariant system of equations on $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$. We discuss the solution space for this system, culminating in a Fischer decomposition for the space of polynomials on $\mathbb {R}^{2n}$ with values in the symplectic spinors. To make this decomposition explicit, we will construct the associated embedding factors using a transvector algebra.

Abstract

This paper presents a newly developed plastic scintillator produced in collaboration with Turkiye Energy, Nuclear and Mineral Research Agency (TENMAK). The scintillator is manufactured using thermal polymerization of commercially available styrene monomer. The absorption spectrum of the scintillator exhibited two absorption bands at 225 nm and 340 nm, with an absorption edge observed at 410 nm. The wavelength of the emitted light was measured in the range of 400-800 nm, with a maximum intensity at 427 nm. Monoenergetic electrons from the 137Cs source were used to evaluate the characteristics of the new scintillator, particularly its light yield. As the light readout the MAPD-3NM type silicon photomultiplier array (4 x 4) with an active area of 15 x 15 mm2, assembled using single MAPDs with an active area of 3.7 x 3.7 mm2, was used. The light yield of the scintillator was determined to be 6134 photons/MeV. In addition, the efficiency of the scintillator for gamma rays with an energy of 662 keV was found to be approximately 1.8 %. A CmBe neutron source was employed to evaluate its fast neutron detection performance. However, neutron/gamma discrimination using pulse shape discrimination (charge integration) method was not observed. 15. Examining Students' Geometrical Misconceptions by Eye Tracking

Abstract

This study was conducted to reveal potential sources of students' difficulty and misconceptions about geometrical concepts with the help of eye tracking. In this study, the students' geometrical misconceptions were explored by answering the questions on the geometry test prepared based on the literature and test-taking processes and represented with the help of eye tracking data to make interpretations about their visual and cognitive attention. With this aim, the mixed method research design was used. The data were collected through the geometry test, eye tracking measurements, and the think aloud strategy. Geometry test scores were represented by descriptive statistics such as percentage. The quantitative eye tracking data were analysed by Kruskal-Wallis tests and Mann-Whitney "U"-tests among the choices for each question. The qualitative data collected through the think aloud strategy were analysed by the content analysis. In the findings, the students' geometrical misconceptions were examined and reported in detail from a different perspective with the help of data related to eye tracking. Then, eye tracking data and qualitative data showed the geometry misconception items on which the students had difficulty and cognitive conflict in addition to geometrical misconception based on the students' answers to the geometry questions.

16. Teacher Moves for Supporting Student Reasoning in Mathematics Instruction

Abstract

Interest in teachers' moves to classroom discourse has started to increase since how teachers respond to students' thinking influences students' learning. The purpose of this study was to investigate the moves used by one sixth grade mathematics teacher at a public middle school in Turkey to support student reasoning in mathematics instruction and their influence on classroom discourse. Six 80-min lessons were analyzed with particular attention to how the teacher elicits, responds to, facilitates, and extends student reasoning. The results revealed that teacher moves mainly included low-potential moves in all categories. The teacher mainly tried to elicit student answers in the lessons and aimed to facilitate their understanding through questioning. He also tended to confirm students' answers and re-represent their thoughts to the class, occasionally adding further information. However, the results showed that the teacher had a dominant role in classroom interactions. Besides, from time to time, the teacher did not focus on student responses and postpone the student reactions. However, the teacher moves that limit student contribution, such as ignoring students' answers and insisting on their own points of view, reduce the depth of classroom interactions and student understanding. In general, the teacher's ability to support student reasoning and facilitate productive classroom discourse was not sufficient.

17. The Relationship between Nutrition-Physical Activity Behaviors of Autistic Children with Their Families and Children's Obesity Levels during COVID Pandemic

Abstract

The family has a key role in the obesity management of children with autism. This study examines the relationship between the nutrition-physical activity behaviors of autistic children with their families and children's obesity levels during COVID-19 pandemic. The descriptive and cross-sectional study involved 80 parents of autistic children. A positive correlation was found between children's mean BMI values before and during the pandemic (p = 0.000). Family Nutrition and Physical Activity Scale (FNPAS) and Brief Autism Mealtime Behavior Inventory (BAMBI) score were 55.18 ± 7.86 and 31.76 ± 8.79, respectively. In addition, it was found that 32.5% of the children ate more than before the pandemic, 50.0% engaged in less physical activity, and 16.3% didn't do any physical activity. The study results suggesting the risk of obesity.

Although clinical studies of pilonidal sinus have been conducted for approximately a century, the gold standard for treatment is undefined. The ideal treatment requires a shorter hospital stay, requires less wound care, results in rapid recovery, maintains quality of life, and has low recurrence rates. In this review, we aim to discuss the challenges and possible solutions for the management of pilonidal sinus disease. Abstract

PURPOSE: Electric bicycles (e-bikes) achieve higher speeds than pedal bicycles, but few studies have investigated the impact on injury rates specific to the pediatric population. Utilizing the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), we compared rates of pediatric injury for e-bikes, bicycles, and gas-engine bicycles (mopeds) from 2011 to 2020. METHODS: Descriptive and bivariate inferential analyses were performed upon NEISS estimates of e-bike, bicycle, and moped injuries in children aged 2-18 years. Analyses were stratified by patient age and helmet usage. The Mann-Kendall test of trends was used. RESULTS: We identified 3945 e-bike, 23,389 moped, and 2.05 million bicycle injuries. Over time, the incidence of injury increased for e-bikes (Kendalls τ=0.73, p = 0.004), decreased for pedal bicycles (Kendalls τ= - 0.91, p = 0.0003), and did not change for mopeds (Kendalls τ = 0.06, p = 0.85). Males accounted for 82.5 % of e-bike injuries. The age group most commonly affected by e-bike injury (44.3 %) was 10-13 years old. The proportion of injuries requiring hospitalization was significantly higher for e-bikes (11.5 %), compared to moped and bicycle (7.0 and 4.8 %, respectively, p

Abstract

In this paper we consider (polynomial) solution spaces for the symplectic Dirac operator (with a focus on $1$-homogeneous solutions). This space forms an infinite-dimensional representation space for the symplectic Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sp}(2m)$. Because $\mathfrak{so}(m)\subset \mathfrak{sp}(2m)$, this leads to a branching problem which generalises the classical Fischer decomposition in harmonic analysis. Due to the infinite nature of the solution spaces for the symplectic Dirac operators, this is a non-trivial question: both the summands appearing in the decomposition and their explicit embedding factors will be determined in terms of a suitable Mickelsson-Zhelobenko algebra.

34. Impact of STEM Integrated Argumentation-Based Inquiry Applications on Students' Academic Success, Reflective Thinking and Creative Thinking Skills

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to determine the effect of argumentation-based inquiry approach (ABI) and STEM-supported ABI approach on students' academic achievement, scientific creativity and reflective thinking skills for problem solving, and to determine students' views about the process. Explanatory sequential design, one of the mixed research methods, was used in the study. A total of 41students (N=20 boys, n=21 girls) studying in the seventh grade of a secondary school in north-east Turkey constitute the study group. In the study, the two classes that the same teacher attended was randomly determined where one was an ABI group (N=21) and the other a STEM-supported ABI group (N=20). The groups worked with the same teacher throughout the study. In the quantitative dimension of the study, Academic Achievement Test, Reflective Thinking Scale for Problem Solving, and Scientific Creativity Scale was used, while semi-structured interview form was used in the qualitative dimension. Independent Groups T Test and ANCOVA were applied in the analysis of quantitative data. Content analysis was performed in the analysis of qualitative data. In the research, it was concluded that students' reflective thinking skills for problem solving, scientific creativity and academic success are more developed in applications made by integrating STEM into the ABI approach.

35. Stochastic stability analysis of legged locomotion using unscented transformation

Abstract

In this manuscript, we present a novel method for estimating the stochastic stability characteristics of metastable legged systems using the unscented transformation. Prior methods for stability analysis in such systems often required high-dimensional state space discretization and a broad set of initial conditions, resulting in significant computational complexity. Our approach aims to alleviate this issue by reducing the dimensionality of the system and utilizing the unscented transformation to estimate the output distribution. This technique allows us to account for multiple sources of uncertainty and high-dimensional system dynamics, while leveraging prior knowledge of noise statistics to inform the selection of initial conditions for experiments. As a result, our method enables the efficient assessment of controller performance and analysis of parametric dependencies with fewer experiments. To demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed method, we apply it to the analysis of a one-dimensional hopper and an underactuated bipedal walking simulation with a hybrid zero dynamics controller.

Abstract

In this paper we use the canonical complex structure $\mathbb{J}$ on $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ to introduce a twist of the symplectic Dirac operator. As a matter of fact, these operators can be interpreted as the bosonic analogues of the Dirac operators on a Hermitian manifold. Moreover, we prove that the algebra of these symplectic Dirac operators is isomorphic to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{su}(1,2)$ which leads to the Howe dual pair $(\mathsf{U}(n),\mathfrak{su}(1,2))$.

In this paper, we provide tools to study the dynamics of point vortex dynamics on $\mathbb{CP}^n$ and the flag manifold $\mathbb{F}_{1,2}(\mathbb{C}^3)$. These are the only K\"ahler twistor spaces arising from 4-manifolds. We give an explicit expression for Green's function on $\mathbb{CP}^n$ which enables us to determine the Hamiltonian $H$ and the equations of motions for the point vortex problem on $\mathbb{CP}^n$. Abstract

Background It is unclear whether different exercise programs lead to an increase in the concentration of plasma Pentraxin3 (PTX3), an anti-inflammatory protein. This study aimed to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise (AE) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on plasma PTX3 levels in overweight and obese women. Method A total of 45 sedentary women aged between 32.26 ± 6.30 voluntarily participated in the study. The control group (CG, n = 15) was selected among normal-weight women. Women in the group of participants who partook in exercise consisted of overweight and obese women according to a random method, including the AE group (n = 15) and the HIIT group (n = 15). The AE session conducted was 50 min in duration and consisted of warm-up exercises (5 min), and primary exercises (40 min, basic aerobic-step exercises). HIIT consists of warm-up exercises (5 min), primary exercises (work intervals: 6−10 × 1 min (80–90% HRmax), rest intervals: 1 min (walk, 50% HRmax), 21–29 min running. The exercises were applied for three sessions/week for 12 weeks. Fasting blood samples were taken from all participants before and after exercise and their body composition was measured. Results As a result of two different 12-week exercises, serum PTX3 levels increased significantly by 47.53% in the AE group and 50.21% in the HIIT group (p .05). Also, no significant differences were found between the two types of exercises in terms of parameters. A significant negative correlation in the total sample was found between PTX3 with BMI, fat mass, LDL-C, and hsCRP. Conclusion The percentage change in PTX3 values was not different between exercise types, whereas PTX3 was increased with exercise, regardless of the type of exercise. It can be said that both aerobic and HIIT increase PTX3, VO2max levels and improve lipid metabolism in overweight and obese women.

Background: Blood culture-negative endocarditis (BCNE) is a diagnostic challenge, therefore our objective was to pinpoint high-risk cohorts for BCNE. Methods: The study included adult patients with definite endocarditis. Data were collected via the Infectious Diseases International Research Initiative (ID-IRI). The study analysing one of the largest case series ever reported was conducted across 41 centers in 13 countries.
