Abstract

Most research on the development of personality traits like the Dark Triad (i.e., narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy) focuses on local effects like parenting style or attachment, but people live in a larger society that may set the stage for any local effects. Here we paired nation-level data on the traits from 49 nations with several milieu indicators (e.g., life expectancy, homicide rates) from three timepoints (and change among them) where the average participant (≈ 22yo) would have been a child (≈ 6yo), a pre-teen (≈ 11yo), and a teenager (≈ 16yo). Congruent with previous research, variance in narcissism was far more sensitive to variance in milieu conditions in general and across all three time points than variance in Machiavellianism or psychopathy. The milieu conditions differentiated the traits somewhat with income and education revealing negative correlations with narcissism, positive correlations with Machiavellianism, and null correlations with psychopathy. Sex differences in Machiavellianism and narcissism were correlated with homicide rates across the three timepoints. The evidence that changes in milieu conditions in ones' past predicts the traits was erratic, but larger sex differences in the traits were associated with decreased life expectancies and homicide rates between childhood and pre-teens.

We examined the structure of these traits’ measure—the Dark Triad Dirty Dozen (DTDD)—in a sample of 11,488 participants from three W.E.I.R.D. (i.e., North America, Oceania, Western Europe) and five non-W.E.I.R.D. (i.e., Asia, Middle East, non-Western Europe, South America, sub-Saharan Africa) world regions. The results confirmed the measurement invariance of the DTDD across participants’ sex in all world regions, with men scoring higher than women on all traits (except for psychopathy in Asia, where the difference was not significant). We found evidence for metric (and partial scalar) measurement invariance within and between W.E.I.R.D. and non-W.E.I.R.D. world regions. The results generally support the structure of the DTDD.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: The Dark Triad traits (i.e., narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism) capture individual differences in aversive personality to complement work on other taxonomies, such as the Big Five traits. However, the literature on the Dark Triad traits relies mostly on samples from English-speaking (i.e., Westernized) countries. We broadened the scope of this literature by sampling from a wider array of countries. METHOD: We drew on data from 49 countries (N = 11,723; 65.8% female; AgeMean = 21.53) to examine how an extensive net of country-level variables in economic status (e.g., Human Development Index), social relations (e.g., gender equality), political orientations (e.g., democracy), and cultural values (e.g., embeddedness) relate to country-level rates of the Dark Triad traits, as well as variance in the magnitude of sex differences in them. RESULTS: Narcissism was especially sensitive to country-level variables. Countries with more embedded and hierarchical cultural systems were more narcissistic. Also, sex differences in narcissism were larger in more developed societies: Women were less likely to be narcissistic in developed (vs. less developed) countries. CONCLUSIONS: We discuss the results based on evolutionary and social role models of personality and sex differences. That higher country-level narcissism was more common in less developed countries, whereas sex differences in narcissism were larger in more developed countries, is more consistent with evolutionary than social role models.

Abstract

State-of-the-art object recognition and pose estimation systems often utilize point feature algorithms, which in turn usually require the computing power of conventional PC hardware. In this paper, we describe two embedded systems for object detection and pose estimation using sophisticated point features. The feature detection step of the “Speeded-up Robust Features (SURF)” algorithm is accelerated by a special IP core. The first system performs object detection and is completely implemented in a single medium-size Virtex-5 FPGA. The second system is an augmented reality platform, which consists of an ARM-based microcontroller and intelligent FPGA-based cameras which support the main system.

18. Strategic Issues in Entrepreneurship and Family Business Research

Abstract

When considering the percentage of small and medium-sized enterprises, and the number of these that are family businesses, in terms of the worldwide corporate landscape, the fundamental status of these types of enterprises for the wealth of the global economy becomes particularly obvious. The worldwide corporate landscape consists to over 95% of small and medium-sized enterprises, and, on average, to 85% of family businesses. Consequently, economic prosperity can only be preserved if the continued existence and growth of small and medium-sized enterprises and family businesses is ensured and stimulated. Therefore, this doctoral dissertation investigates strategic issues in the field of entrepreneurship and family business research with the objective of providing suggestions and implications on aspects respectively factors by which continued existence can be ensured and/or growth can be promoted. By initially conducting bibliometric analyses in the fields of family business and strategic entrepreneurship research, insightful overviews and understandings regarding the intellectual structure of both fields of research are generated. In fact, the bibliometric studies in each field enabled the identification of research gaps that remain unexplored. The following issues have been chosen to serve the stated objective of the dissertation. While succession within family businesses has been recognized as having a strong impact on the continued existence of those businesses, strategic orientations, such as entrepreneurial orientation or customer orientation, have been found to be facilitators for firm growth. By executing a literature review of psychological aspects relating to family business succession, critical issues that might interfere with the process have been identified. The study emphasizes, that fostering awareness among the individual party(ies) concerned regarding various psychological aspects, such as, for instance, letting the business go, lack of trust, or missing boundaries between family and business, is inevitable for a successful succession, and thereby is essential for the continued existence of family businesses. In addition, two quantitative empirical studies have been carried out investigating the effect of strategic orientations on the performance respectively growth of small and medium-sized enterprises. The results emphasize that entrepreneurial orientation, from a general point of view, facilitates the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises. However, country-specific issues such as cultural or economic factors need to be taken into consideration when providing precise implications. Therefore, depending on the environment, different configurations of the dimensions of an entrepreneurial orientation lead to firm growth. Pursuing various combinations of the entrepreneurial orientation dimensions results in different outcomes, such as, for instance, radical or incremental innovations. Additionally, financial resource availability is a key factor that is positively linked to entrepreneurial orientation, and concomitantly, to the performance of small and medium-sized enterprises. In summary, the present doctoral dissertation highlights valuable implications, based on which the continued existence of family businesses can be ensured respectively the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises can be stimulated. Each study contributes to the progression of the respective field of research, providing valuable insights for both scholars and practitioners.

19. Context and Complexity of International Entrepreneurship as a Field of Research

Abstract

International Entrepreneurship has become a focal point of interest and an important field of research for theory building in International Business and Entrepreneurship. Therein it pertains to the complexity of research issues addressing: first, small and larger, young and more established firms, exploiting opportunities in the international market place. Second, how does entrepreneurial behavior differ between national and cultural contexts? Six studies in this dissertation uncover and mirror the inherent complexity of the phenomenon within the three subdomains of International Entrepreneurship. Three studies cover the sub-domain of entrepreneurial internationalization; two further studies encompass inquiries into this domain from a comparative perspective while one study covers the cross-cultural view on domestic Entrepreneurship. Despite today’s globalized context, decisions, economic action, and outcomes are still not context-free. Rather, places, firms, and strategies form a complex ecology. Given that International Entrepreneurship is concerned with multiple contexts, which might be highly diverse, possible conflicting and thus influencing the likelihood of exerting its enhancing or constraining mechanism, all six studies incorporate a contextualized perspective. Based on this context-lens the thesis concludes with an integrative framework – the Context Diamond framework – being essential when addressing future questions in the three subdomains of International Entrepreneurship.

Abstract

A theoretical perspective on grandiose narcissism suggests four forms of it (sanctity, admiration, heroism, rivalry) and states that these forms conduce to different ways of thinking and acting. Guided by this perspective, we examined in a multinational and multicultural study (61 countries; N = 15,039) how narcissism forms are linked to cognitions and behaviors prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As expected, differences in cognitions and behaviors across narcissism forms emerged. For example, higher narcissistic rivalry predicted lower likelihood of enactment of COVID-19 prevention behaviors, but higher narcissistic sanctity predicted higher likelihood of enactment of COVID-19 prevention behaviors. Further, whereas the heroism, admiration, and rivalry narcissism forms acted in a typically antisocial manner, with high narcissism predicting greater endorsement of unfounded health beliefs, the sanctity form acted in a prosocial manner, with higher narcissism being linked to lower endorsement of unfounded COVID-19 health beliefs. Thus, the findings (a) support the idea of four narcissism forms acting differently, and (b) show that these differences reflect a double-edged sword, sometimes linking to an anti-social orientation, and sometimes linking to a pro-social orientation., (© 2024. Abstract

The Dark Triad (i.e., narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism) has garnered intense attention over the past 15 years. We examined the structure of these traits' measure-the Dark Triad Dirty Dozen (DTDD)-in a sample of 11,488 participants from three W.E.I.R.D. (i.e., North America, Oceania, Western Europe) and five non-W.E.I.R.D. (i.e., Asia, Middle East, non-Western Europe, South America, sub-Saharan Africa) world regions. The results confirmed the measurement invariance of the DTDD across participants' sex in all world regions, with men scoring higher than women on all traits (except for psychopathy in Asia, where the difference was not significant). We found evidence for metric (and partial scalar) measurement invariance within and between W.E.I.R.D. and non-W.E.I.R.D. world regions. The results generally support the structure of the DTDD.

Abstract

Objectives: The Dark Triad traits (i.e., narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism) capture individual differences in aversive personality to complement work on other taxonomies, such as the Big Five traits. However, the literature on the Dark Triad traits relies mostly on samples from English-speaking (i.e., Westernized) countries. We broadened the scope of this literature by sampling from a wider array of countries., Method: We drew on data from 49 countries (N = 11,723; 65.8% female; Age Mean  = 21.53) to examine how an extensive net of country-level variables in economic status (e.g., Human Development Index), social relations (e.g., gender equality), political orientations (e.g., democracy), and cultural values (e.g., embeddedness) relate to country-level rates of the Dark Triad traits, as well as variance in the magnitude of sex differences in them., Results: Narcissism was especially sensitive to country-level variables. Countries with more embedded and hierarchical cultural systems were more narcissistic. Also, sex differences in narcissism were larger in more developed societies: Women were less likely to be narcissistic in developed (vs. less developed) countries., Conclusions: We discuss the results based on evolutionary and social role models of personality and sex differences. That higher country-level narcissism was more common in less developed countries, whereas sex differences in narcissism were larger in more developed countries, is more consistent with evolutionary than social role models., (© 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)
