Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) affects 1.5 of every 1,000 caucasian Americans and less frequently affects African Americans. Developmental dysplasia of the hip comprises a spectrum of abnormalities, ranging from laxity of the joint and mild subluxation to fixed dislocation. Early diagnosis of DDH usually leads to low-risk treatment with a harness. Late diagnosis of DDH in children may lead to increased surgical intervention and complications. Late diagnosis of DDH in adults can result in debilitating end-stage degenerative hip joint disease. Screening decreases the incidence of late diagnosis of DDH. Clinical evaluation for DDH should be performed periodically at each well-baby visit until the age of 12 months. There is no consensus on imaging screening for DDH. Consideration for screening with ultrasound is balanced between the benefits of early detection of DDH and the increased treatment and cost factors. In addition, randomized trials evaluating primary ultrasound screening did not find significant decrease in late diagnosis of DDH. In the United States, hip ultrasound is selectively performed in infants with risk factors, such as family history of DDH, breech presentation, and inconclusive findings on physical examination. Ultrasound for DDH should be performed after 2 weeks of age because laxity is common after birth and often resolves itself. A pelvic radiograph can optimally be performed after the age of 4 months, when most infants will have ossification centers of the femoral heads. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes the development of a new ACR grant program, ACR Appropriateness Criteria Usage in Medical Education. Developed and funded over the course of a single year, the program provides grants totaling up to $60,000 annually to support innovation in radiology education. To assess program director's reactions to a Residency Review Committee rule change requiring diagnostic radiology residents to complete 12 months of training prior to taking independent call, 303 Association of Program Directors members were surveyed. A total of 147 members responded (48.5% response rate). Overall, 66.1% of respondents were opposed to the change, 21.1% were in favor of it, and 12.8% were neutral. Although this rule change has already been accepted by the residency review committee for implementation July 1, 2008, there has been much debate over this modification and the impact it will have on varying programs. Mentorship is an often insufficiently acknowledged yet powerful tool to recruit medical students to various specialties and provide guidance as they advance through the stages of their medical career. While the number of specialty-specific mentorship programs available to medical students across the country is on the rise, the utility of trainee-led mentorship is yet to be explored. The purpose of this study is to share a single-institution's experience with implementing a trainee-led radiology mentorship program. This study will also briefly address this institution's methods for evaluating medical students' attitudes toward the specialty prior to and following participation in the mentorship program, to assess their interest and confidence in applying to a radiology residency., (Copyright © 2024 The Association of University Radiologists. Rationale and Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop a validated instrument to measure radiology residents' sense of psychological ownership of patient care., Materials and Methods: A previously validated measure of patient care ownership was adapted through a two-step process of expert review and revision by six academic radiology faculty. An online, anonymous survey was distributed to 64 residents and fellows at the end of three consecutive four-week long rotations. We calculated Cronbach's α to determine the scale's internal consistency, performed exploratory factor analysis to identify possible subscales, and conducted bivariate and correlational analysis to establish construct validity., Results: The 11-item ownership scale demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.93), and three subscales were identified corresponding to assertiveness, conscientiousness, and confidence/perceived competence. Sense of ownership was significantly associated with training level, prior experience in the type of rotation, stress, sleep, burnout, peer support, relationships with clinical staff, and recognition by department. We found no significant association between ownership and age, gender, type of rotation, site of rotation, type of residency, perceived interruption frequency, or remote work frequency., Conclusion: The radiology resident patient care ownership scale demonstrates good internal consistency and preliminary evidence of validity. It is important, especially as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, to revisit some of the most important advantages of highly interactive forms of medical education, especially face-to-face encounters between educators and learners. It may cost more and require a greater commitment on the part of teaching faculty, but a case can be made that the advantages of such educational approaches outweigh any increased costs.

In a field in which no single person knows everything, the effective management of ignorance becomes an imperative.

We have observed that former nurses often make very good radiology residents, which leads us to think that nursing offers important lessons to radiology. To be clear, we are not proposing that undergraduate or medical students pursue nursing training so they can enhance their performance in residency - in view of the long course of radiology training, such a suggestion would be highly impractical.
