Chemical amendments can increase metal uptake by plant roots and translocation to shoots, however their effectiveness can be influenced by the presence of other amendments and metal ions in a multiple-metal environment. A range of amendments and combinations were tested to explore their effect on phytoextraction of Cu, Cd, and Pb by perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) from solutions containing one or more of these metals. The amendments studied included EDDS (an aminopolycarboxylic acid), histidine (an amino acid), citric acid (an organic acid), rhamnolipid (a biosurfactant) and sulfate (an inorganic ligand). For all amendment treatments, the presence of multiple metals in solution reduced shoot concentrations of Cd and Cu, while Pb levels in shoots were generally enhanced by the presence of Cu. Although slightly toxic to the plants, EDDS (1 mM) was the most effective individual amendment for enhancing shoot metal uptake and translocation from solution without significantly reducing biomass yield. The combination Rhm+Cit+EDDS resulted in the highest shoot metal concentrations of all the treatments but also caused severe phytotoxicity. Amendment combinations Rhm+His and Sulf+Cit were less toxic for plant growth while moderately enhancing metal mass accumulation in shoots and thus could be considered as alternative treatments for enhanced phytoextraction. Phytoextraction of metals is frequently limited by contaminant bioavailability and plant uptake rates. Chemical amendments can be added to increase the uptake and translocation of metals to aerial biomass. A range of amendments of various types was tested for increasing the copper uptake with the test species Indian mustard and ryegrass. These included citric acid (an organic acid); histidine (an amino acid); ethylenediaminetriacetic acid (EDTA), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), and ethelynediaminedisuccinic acid (EDDS) (aminopolycarboxylic acids); rhamnolipid (a biosurfactant); and Triton X-100 (a synthetic surfactant). EDTA was the most effective amendment for enhancing copper uptake and translocation into the shoots of Indian mustard and ryegrass, with respective shoot tissue copper levels of 1230 and 1360 μg-Cu/g-dry weight after 10 d compared to 90 and 220 μg-Cu/g-dry weight, respectively, in the unamended treatments. However, the EDTA application resulted in symptoms of toxicity in both Indian mustard and ryegrass, leading to drastic decreases in biomass yield. The application of high levels (300 mg/L) of the biodegradable chelator EDDS was found to be effective for improving translocation of copper in both species. The NTA addition provided benefits to root and shoot growth, with increased copper translocation to shoot tissue. Tests with biosurfactants and synthetic surfactants indicated detrimental effects on copper uptake, biomass yield, and the translocation of copper from roots to shoots in both plant species. The imposition and lifting of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to avert the COVID-19 pandemic have gained popularity worldwide and will continue to be enforced until herd immunity is achieved. We developed a linear regression model to ascertain the nexus between the time-varying reproduction number averaged over a time window of six days (R ts ) and seven NPIs: contact tracing, quarantine efforts, social distancing and health checks, hand hygiene, wearing of facemasks, lockdown and isolation, and health-related supports. Our analysis suggests that the second wave that emerged in Sri Lanka in early October 2020 continued despite numerous NPIs. The model indicates that the most effective single NPI was lockdown and isolation. Conversely, the least effective individual NPIs were hand hygiene and wearing of facemasks. The model also demonstrates that to mitigate the second wave to a satisfactory level (R ts <1), the best single NPI was the contact tracing with stringent imposition (% of improvement of R ts was 69.43 against the base case). By contrast, the best combination of two NPIs was the lockdown & isolation with health-related supports (% of improvement was 31.92 against the base case). Phthalates are widely used as a plasticizer in manufacturing polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles to improve softness, flexibility, durability, longevity, and workability. Phthalates are known in instigating profound human health hazards. In many developing countries, lack of proper disposal facilities established for empty PET bottles and the absence of legislation on reuse invariably persuade people to reuse them for storing potable water. An experiment was conducted with two commercial brands of PET bottles to explore the potential of phthalate migration when domestically refilled and reused in multiple times at two temperature conditions. Temperatures of ambient (27 ± 2 °C) and warm (60 ± 2 °C) were selected as the refilling temperatures because of the common practice by people. For both brands, only bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) levels were detected in refilled water in every event of reuse. For both brands, mean DEHP levels migrated to water at 60 ± 2 °C were significantly higher (p < 0.05) compared to those at 27 ± 2 °C. Risk analyses carried out on human health suggested that there exist no definite acute or chronic health risks when the refilled water is consumed continuously for 30 years for both temperatures. Still, such risks were higher for the consumption of refilled water of warm temperatures than those of ambient temperature. However, this study elucidates that DEHP migration would be at an alarming rate when the events of reuse of a single bottle increase so that regulations banning the reuse of empty PET bottles are paramount, especially for developing countries.

The practice of social distancing and wearing masks has been popular worldwide in combating the contraction of COVID-19. Undeniably, although such practices help control the COVID-19 pandemic to a greater extent, the complete control of virus-laden droplet and aerosol transmission by such practices is poorly understood. This review paper intends to outline the literature concerning the transmission of virus-laden droplets and aerosols in different environmental settings and demonstrates the behavior of droplets and aerosols resulted from a cough-jet of an infected person in various confined spaces. The case studies that have come out in different countries have, with prima facie evidence, manifested that the airborne transmission plays a profound role in contracting susceptible hosts. The infection propensities in confined spaces (airplane, passenger car, and healthcare center) by the transmission of droplets and aerosols under varying ventilation conditions were discussed. Interestingly, the nosocomial transmission by airborne SARS-CoV-2 virus-laden aerosols in healthcare facilities may be plausible. Hence, clearly defined, science-based administrative, clinical, and physical measures are of paramount importance to eradicate the COVID-19 pandemic from the world., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. This study explores the zero-valent iron (ZVI) dechlorination of pentachlorophenol (PCP) and its dependence on the dissolved oxygen (O 2 ), presence/formation of iron oxides, and presence of nickel metal on the ZVI surface. Compared to the anoxic system, PCP dechlorination was slower in the presence of O 2 , which is a potential competitive electron acceptor. Despite O 2 presence, Ni 0 deposited on the ZVI surfaces catalyzed the hydrogenation reactions and enhanced the PCP dechlorination by Ni-coated ZVI bimetal (Nic/Fe). The presence of O 2 led to the formation of passivating oxides (maghemite, hematite, lepidocrocite, ferrihydrite) on the ZVI and Nic/Fe bimetallic surfaces. These passive oxides resulted in greater PCP incorporation (sorption, co-precipitation, and/or physical entrapment with the oxides) and decreased PCP dechlorination in the oxic systems compared to the anoxic systems. As received ZVI comprised of a wustite film, and in the presence of O 2 , only ≈ 17% PCP dechlorination observed after 25 days of exposure with tetrachlorophenol being detected as the end product. Wustite remained as the predominant oxide on as received ZVI during the 25 days of reaction with PCP under oxic and anoxic conditions. ZVI acid-pretreatment resulted in the replacement of wustite with magnetite and enhanced PCP degradation (e.g. ≈ 52% of the initial PCP dechlorinated after 25 days under oxic condition) with accumulation of mixtures of tetra-, tri-, and dichlorophenols. When the acid-washed ZVI was rinsed in NiSO 4 /H 2 SO 4 solution, Ni 0 deposited on the ZVI surface and all the wustite were replaced with magnetite. After 25 days of exposure to the Nic/Fe, ≈ 78% and 97% PCP dechlorination occurred under oxic and anoxic conditions, respectively, producing predominantly phenol. Wustite and magnetite are respectively electrically insulating and conducting oxides and influenced the dechlorination and H 2 production. In conclusion, this study clearly demonstrates that the dissolved oxygen present in the aqueous solution decreases the PCP dechlorination and increases the PCP incorporation when using ZVI and Nic/Fe bimetallic systems. The findings provide novel insights towards deciphering and optimizing the performance of complex ZVI and bimetallic systems for PCP dechlorination in the presence of O 2 .

Meethotamulla open dump (MOD) of Sri Lanka that has received about 290,000 metric tons of mixed MSW annually collapsed on 14th April 2017 with massive devastation. An integrated approach was attempted to control further collapse with the deployment of drone-assisted and stand-alone instrumentation. The collapsed dump was analyzed for attributes, including contours, heights, wetness, temperature levels, tension cracks, landfill gases, fire, explosion, and asphyxiation hazards with 24-h surveillance after one day of the collapse. The mode of MOD failure was implicated to be deep-seated (rotational) slope failure. A short-term plan, consisting of 12 activities was prepared and successfully implemented. The activities of the short-term plan were carried out at the dumpsite until the water level fluctuations <5 cm, inundation of the toe area receded completely, the horizontal displacement of surface markers <20 mm, lower explosive levels of CH 4 and CO less than 5 and 12%, respectively, O 2 level improved up to 21%, and temperature variation of the collapsed face <2 °C. The short-term plan was halted when the factor of safety for slope failure of the critical face improved from 0.807 to 1.286 ensuring no signs of a subsequent collapse of the MOD. An early warning system was established in the case of an imminent collapse. This integrated approach, to our knowledge, is the first study instituted, and this holistic management effort could be easily replicated to avoid disasters from slope failures of landfills or open dumps that may occur elsewhere., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. This study investigated the characteristics of iron corrosion scales in pipes at tube well, overhead tank, and consumers' end in older untreated water distribution system in Peshawar city, Pakistan. Effect of water quality conditions on corrosion scales and that of scales on drinking water quality in such systems was also assessed by undertaking a comparison with new piped distribution systems. The scales were analyzed for chemical composition and morphology using X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and a scanning electron microscope (SEM), while water quality was examined for physicochemical and biological characteristics. The main crystalline phases of corrosion scales were goethite, magnetite, siderite, and quartz. From tube well to consumers' end, goethite increased from 36 up to 48%, quartz declined from 22 to 15%, while magnetite fluctuated and siderite disappeared. Elemental composition of scales showed the deposition of Zn, Al, Mn, Cr, Pb, Cu, As, and Cd with Zn (13.9 g/kg) and Al (3.6 g/kg) in highest proportion. The SEM analysis illustrated the presence of microbial communities indicating the formation of biofilms in the corrosion scales. The significant difference (P < 0.05) in levels of dissolved oxygen (DO), Cl - , SiO 4 4- , electrical conductivity (EC), SO 4 2- , NO 3 - , alkalinity, hardness, and trace metals between old (DS-O) and new piped systems indicated their role in corrosion scale formation/destabilization and the effect of scale dissolution on water quality. In DS-O, EC, Cu, and Mn were significantly higher (P < 0.05), whereas turbidity, EC, DO, and SiO 4 4- significantly increased from source to consumers' end implying a higher dissolution of scales and lowered corrosion rates in DS-O to utilize SiO 4 4- and DO for iron oxidation.

The magnetotransport properties of the high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron gas systems have been examined to determine the influence of the ac current bias on the carrier temperature. The changes in the line shape of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the longitudinal magnetoresistance ([Formula: see text]) were followed as a function of the ac current bias in the temperature range of [Formula: see text] in order to determine the carrier heating effect due to the ac bias. The lineshape analysis of these oscillations indicates that the carrier temperature of the two-dimensional electron system is linearly proportional to the ac bias current.

The dechlorination of chlorinated organic pollutants by zero valent iron (ZVI) is an important water treatment process with a complex dependence on many variables. This complexity means that there are reported inconsistencies in terms of dechlorination with ZVI and the effect of ZVI acid treatment, which are significant and are as yet unexplained. This study aims to decipher some of this complexity by combining Raman spectroscopy with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to investigate the influence of the mineralogy of the iron oxide phases on the surface of ZVI on the reductive dechlorination of pentachlorophenol (PCP). Two electrolytic iron samples (ZVI-T and ZVI-H) were found to have quite different PCP dechlorination reactivity in batch reactors under anoxic conditions. Raman analysis of the "as-received" ZVI-T indicated the iron was mainly covered with the ferrous oxide (FeO) wustite, which is non-conducting and led to a low rate of PCP dechlorination. In contrast, the dominant oxide on the "as-received" ZVI-H was magnetite which is conducting and, compared to ZVI-T, the ZVI-H rate of PCP dechlorination was four times faster. Treating the ZVI-H sample with 1 N H 2 SO 4 made small change to the composition of the oxide layers and also minute change to the rate of PCP dechlorination. However, treating the ZVI-T sample with H 2 SO 4 led to the loss of wustite so that magnetite became the dominant oxide and the rate of PCP dechlorination increased to that of the ZVI-H material. In conclusion, this study clearly shows that iron oxide mineralogy can be a contributing factor to apparent inconsistencies in the literature related to ZVI performance towards dechlorination and the effect of acid treatment on ZVI reactivity.

Glyphosate, which is commercially available as Roundup®, was the widely used herbicide in Sri Lanka until 2015 and is suspected to be one of the causal factors for Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown etiology (CKDu). This research, therefore, aims at studying the presence of glyphosate and Aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in different environmental matrices in CKDu prevalent areas. Topsoil samples from agricultural fields, water samples from nearby shallow wells and lakes, and sediment samples from lakes were collected and analyzed for glyphosate and AMPA using the LC/MS. Glyphosate (270-690 µg/kg) and AMPA (2-8 µg/kg) were detected in all soil samples. Amorphous iron oxides and organic matter content of topsoil showed a strong and a moderate positive linear relationship with glyphosate. The glyphosate and inorganic phosphate levels in topsoil had a strong negative significant linear relationship. Presence of high valence cations such as Fe 3+ and Al 3+ in topsoil resulted in the formation of glyphosate-metal complexes, thus strong retention of glyphosate in soil. Lower levels of AMPA than the corresponding glyphosate levels in topsoil could be attributed to factors such as the strong adsorption capacity of glyphosate to soil and higher LOQ in the quantification of AMPA. The glyphosate levels of lakes were between 28 to 45 µg/L; no AMPA was detected. While trace levels of glyphosate (1-4 µg/L) were detected in all groundwater samples, AMPA (2-11µg/L) was detected only in four out of nine samples. Glyphosate was detected in all sediment samples (85-1000 µg/kg), and a strong linear relationship with the organic matter content was observed. AMPA was detected (1-15 µg/kg) in seven out of nine sediment samples. It could be inferred that the impact on CKDu by the levels of glyphosate and AMPA detected in the study area is marginal when compared with the MCL of the USEPA (700 µg/L).
