Some potential drug active substances with the ability to reduce the effects of radiation on human tissues and cells were investigated. For this purpose, eight different types of sulfamide derivatives were synthesized and nuclear radiation protection parameters were determined. Neutron radiation reduction parameters such as the half-value layer effective removal cross-sections, mean free path, and the number of particles passing through the sample were determined with GEANT4 code. Additionally, the gamma radiation attenuation parameters of the materials examined were determined using Phy-X/PSD software in the energy area of 0.015-15 MeV. These parameters are the half-value layer, mass attenuation coefficient, mean free path, exposure buildup factor and effective atomic number. Neutron radiation absorption experiments were applied using an Am-241-Be fast neutron source. All results obtained for neutron radiation were compared with paraffin and water. It has been found that the ability of sulfamide derivatives to absorb these radiations is superior to reference materials. To determine whether these derivatives could have adverse effects on human health, their genotoxic potential was determined using the Ames/Salmonella bacterial reversion test. The results showed that these derivatives can be considered genotoxically safe in tests at concentrations up to 5 mM. Thus, it is suggested that the derivative materials examined in this study can be used as active substances for a drug to be made for protection against both neutron and gamma radiation.

Crop production in salty-sodic soils causes poor crop growth due to ion imbalance, water stress, low hormonal and enzymatic balances. The use of rhizobacteria promoting plant growth in saline and sanitary areas (PGPR) is an economical and environmentally friendly approach that increases and eliminates the tolerance of plants to salt. Field experiments were conducted to determine the response of barley, maize and sorghum crop yields to the application of the bacteria (Halobacillus sp), which was preliminarily experimented by a greenhouse study, on two big soil groups (Haplustept and Fluvaquent). The experiment was established with four different treatments; T0 (control-no application), T1 (the gypsum application), T2 (the PGPR application), and T3 (the gypsum + PGPR application) on the high saline and sodic soils in a semi-arid region. The observations of the present study indicate positive impacts of PGPR applications on crop yield and soil productivity. The gypsum + PGPR treatment was the most effective treatment obtaining higher yields owing to significant improvement in the plant photosynthetic activity, chlorophyll content, stomatal conductance, enzymes, hormones, amino and organic acids, and crop-soil productivity. The seed inoculation with the Halobacillus sp bacteria cultures help in alleviation of stress and enhance crop productivity under the short-term gypsum application on Haplustept and Fluvaquent saline-sodic soils.

Plant Growth Promoting Rhizospheric Bacteria (PGPR) are one of the most potential biofertilizer agents in agricultural applications. Biofertilizers have been used instead of chemical fertilizers last a few decades in the all over world because of their beneficial effects and crucial role in plant growth and health. There are many well know mechanisms are used for identification of active PGPR strains. Nitrogen-fixation is one of the most important mechanism between them. To date, the detection of nitrogen-fixing bacteria has been performed by the many various conventional methods. Recently, from a molecular perspective, the nifH gene has been widely used as a marker gene for microbial N-2 fixation. In this context, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the usability of the nifH gene specific primer sets for the selection of local nitrogen-fixing PGPR strains from agricultural areas in Erzurum. In this regard, our present study was conducted to test the presence nifH gene specific primer sets for determination of nitrogen-fixing capabilities of bacterial isolates from the agricultural regions of Erzurum. Consequently, the designed primer sets in the literature (nifH1/nifH2, Kadino/Emino and F2/R6) were used for detection of nifH gene. In this study, the mutagenic and anti-mutagenic effects of methanol extract of three lichen species (Cetraria aculeata, Cladonia chlorophaea and Cetrelia olivetorum) were investigated by using E. coli-WP2, Ames-Salmonella (TA1535 and TA1537) and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) test systems. The results obtained from bacterial test systems demonstrated that methanol extracts of three lichen species have strong anti-mutagenic potencies on TA1535, TA1537 strains and to a lesser extent on E. coli-WP2 strain. The anti-oxidant level of human lymphocytes cells was determined in order to clarify the mechanism underlying the anti-mutagenic effects of these lichen species. Co-treatments of 5, 10 and 20 µg/mL concentrations of these three lichen species with AFB decreased the frequencies of SCE and the level of MDA and increased the amount of SOD, GSH and GPx which decreased by aflatoxin. The findings of this work have clearly demonstrated that Cetraria aculeata, Cladonia chlorophaea and Cetrelia olivetorum have significant anti-mutagenic effects which are thought to be partly due to the anti-oxidant activities and the interaction capability of lichen extracts with mutagen agents (Sodium azide, acridin, N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine and aflatoxin B1).

Context: Mentha L. (Labiatae) species (mint) with their flavoring properties have been used in food industries for centuries. Besides they have a great importance in drug development and medicinal applications due to various bioactive compounds of several members of the genus.
