The evolution of the global scenario, which involves such converging crises as the climate crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath, and the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Palestine wars, has underscored the fragility of the current food systems and the interdependence of human, animal, plant, and environmental health. Plant health is an important element in all these crises as plants provide food and feed, fix CO2, produce oxygen, and stabilize the soil. As a result of the Covid 19 pandemic, the One Health concept has finally obtained the attention of scientists and funding agencies. However, despite their role in global nutrition, the economy, and in climate crisis, plants are often excluded from the One Health efforts and funding streams. This paper advocates the need for an updated and more holistic view of plant health as public goods within the context of the evolving global challenges and explores opportunities within the Circular Health paradigm.

This work reports a multiscale physics-based approach aimed at investigating the benefits of introducing a single tunnel junction (TJ) within conventional AlGaAs Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs). Our comprehensive VCSEL solver VENUS is augmented with a non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) approach to extract the band-to-band tunneling rate across the TJ. To showcase the NEGF-VENUS features, we apply it to the commercial pin oxide confined AlGaAs VCSEL previously investigated by VENUS, by inserting a TJ with minimal variations to the optical resonator. Besides finding the optimal position of TJ and oxide aperture, we can also compare the different hole injection schemes in the active region. Our results show the potential of doubling the maximum output power with the same threshold current, with perspectives of further enhancement by stacking more tunnel junctions.

In this work we investigate patterned large-active area AlGaAs vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) targeting high-power single-transverse-mode emission. As a first step, our in-house 3D electromagnetic vectorial mode solver VELMS is validated against preliminary experimental data. Then, VELMS is applied to implement single-mode operation on VCSELs featuring large-area rectangular oxide apertures. A comparative appraisal of different mode selection strategies based on patterning the outcoupling facet of the device is presented, providing a number of alternatives for a broad audience of technologists.

Plants are frequently exposed to prolonged and intense drought events. To survive, species must implement strategies to overcome progressive drought while maintaining sufficient resources to sustain the recovery of functions. Our objective was to understand how stress rate development modulates energy reserves and affects the recovery process. Grenache Vitis vinifera cultivar was exposed to either fast-developing drought (within few days; FDD), typical of pot experiments, or slow-developing drought (few weeks, SDD), more typical for natural conditions. FDD was characterized by fast (2-3 days) stomatal closure in response to increased stress level, high abscisic acid (ABA) accumulation in xylem sap (>400 μg L-1 ) without the substantial changes associated with stem priming for recovery (no accumulation of sugar or drop in xylem sap pH). La evocación de la Guerra de Malvinas es constitutiva del imaginario social actual, tema ineludible en la currícula escolar y asunto que surge cíclicamente en la agenda internacional. Está presente en los discursos de la historia, la política y el arte resistiéndose constantemente a ser memoria pura de efeméride a ambos lados del Océano Atlántico. En este sentido, casi desde la finalización del conflicto bélico, vienen produciéndose discursos audiovisuales de distinto tipo (ficciones, documentales, informes periodísticos) que construyen y reconstruyen diversas memorias colectivas en torno a una experiencia que marcó a la sociedad argentina. En este trabajo abordamos el primer episodio: Informe Rattenbach y el último: Malvinas, la cuestión americana.

Young people are often seen as “future citizens” and therefore relegated to a back seat in the planning process, awaiting their coming of age. Recent digital transformations in planning have brought new consultation processes but also created a digital divide and conflicting agendas. This article engages with youth, specifically teenagers, a heterogenous community stuck between childhood and adulthood, assumed to possess the necessary digital skills, but usually overlooked in participatory planning processes. This article will examine the case study cities of Manchester, Birmingham, Valencia, and Sofia, where 121 teenagers between 15 and 19 years of age have been interviewed in relation to their awareness and perceptions of digital technologies and smart cities. It focuses on critically examining young people’s perceptions and values towards the smart city. Using the smart city wheel as an engagement and discussion tool, the article presents teenagers’ critique of smart city models and future city visions. The article categorises common threads and values that this demographic has espoused and presents cautionary tales relating to awareness and skills development in this age group. Throughout the interviews and surveys, young people in all four case studies have reported strong affiliations to specific modes of inhabiting the city and values that they would like to see reflected in any future visions. The article identifies key considerations for planners and smart city practitioners when engaging young people in the creation of future city visions.

Introduction. Due to the communicative requirements inherent to the profession, the legal professional benefits from speech therapy monitoring for the proper use of the voice and to avoid the occurrence of vocal disorders. The development of specific instruments will contribute with more relevant data to guide this monitoring. Objective. To verify the applicability of the General Dysphonia Risk Screening Protocol (DRSP-G) and the Specific Dysphonia Risk Screening Protocol for Legal Professionals (DRSP-LP) and to correlate the average scores of both with vocal deviation, sex, age, professional performance time, vocal signs and symptoms, and vocal self-assessment. Methods. Fifty legal professionals participated. All participants completed the DRSP-G and DRSP-LP and recorded their voices for detection of the presence of altered vocal quality. Results. Most participants presented a high risk of dysphonia, which was higher in men. Altered vocal quality was observed in 34% of the participants. The items with the highest scores in the DRSP-G were talking a lot (76%), excessive daily coffee intake (70%), contact with smokers (60%), and insufficient hydration and sleep (48%); in the DRSP-LP, alcohol consumption (68%) and exposure to air conditioning (64%). There was no correlation between risk scores and the degree of dysphonia, or with age or length of professional experience. The DRSP-G score correlated with vocal signs and symptoms and vocal self-perception. Conclusions. The joint application of the DRSP-G and the DRSP-LP enabled a quantitative and qualitative analysis of risk factors for dysphonia in legal professionals.
