Abstract

We present a new optical arrangement which allows to avoid the broadening by finite aperture in Brillouin spectroscopy. In this system, all the rays scattered at the same angle by the whole scattering volume are collected on a single pixel of the area detector. This allows to use large collection angles, increasing the luminosity without lowering the accuracy of the frequency-shift and linewidth measurements. Abstract

The dynamic structure factor of lithium-diborate glass has been measured at several values of the momentum transfer $Q$ using high resolution inelastic x-ray scattering. Much attention has been devoted to the low $Q$-range, below the observed Ioffe-Regel crossover \qco{}$\simeq$ 2.1 nm$^{-1}$. We find that below \qco{}, the linewidth of longitudinal acoustic waves increases with a high power of either $Q$, or of the frequency $\Omega$, up to the crossover frequency \OMco{} $\simeq$ 9 meV that nearly coincides with the center of the boson peak. This new finding strongly supports the view that resonance and hybridization of acoustic waves with a distribution of rather local low frequency modes forming the boson peak is responsible for the end of acoustic branches in strong glasses. Further, we present high resolution Brillouin light-scattering data obtained at much lower frequencies on the same sample. Abstract

High frequency sound is observed in lithium diborate glass, Li$_2$O--2B$_2$O$_3$, using Brillouin scattering of light and x-rays. The sound attenuation exhibits a non-trivial dependence on the wavevector, with a remarkably rapid increase towards a Ioffe-Regel crossover as the frequency approaches the boson peak from below. An analysis of literature results reveals the near coincidence of the boson-peak frequency with a Ioffe-Regel limit for sound in {\em all} sufficiently strong glasses. Abstract

The present work is aimed at calculating the intensities of the intrinsic T2g band through an UO2 ceramic surface using electron back-scattering diffraction data. The theoretical intensity distribution is displayed in the form of a color-scale image and compared with an experimental Raman imaging map to establish circumstances of the T2g intensity variation within the UO2 ceramic surface and to determine the crystalline orientations. The results evidence a quite good coincidence between theory and experiment, although some grains highlight pronounced differences in T2g intensities for both maps. One therefore implies other “side” effects which make contribution to the T2g intensity behavior within a UO2 ceramic surface, such as different penetration depths of exciting beams in EBSD and Raman spectroscopy, or local stoichiometric changes. Abstract

International audience; In 2013, a portable Raman setup was implemented for on-site and rear-base characterization of volcanic products. Silica and rutile rock coatings, sulfate incrustations and speleothems, plagioclase, clinopyroxene, and (Fe, Ti, Cr) oxides lava minerals were identified on the young lava flows of Piton de la Fournaise volcano. These analytical abilities opens the way of in situ study of the first aging and weathering steps of recent lava flows. This paper relates the preliminary results of the field campaign. Abstract

International audience; In situ Raman scattering studies allow following real‐time evolutions of volume or surface structures under extreme conditions. In nuclear materials sciences, ion irradiation‐induced atomic organization modification and water radiolysis are of a major interest. In order to better understand these phenomena, we have developed an in situ versatile portable Raman spectroscopy system coupled with a cyclotron accelerator, allowing monitoring of a solid/liquid interface under irradiation and thus giving access to effects of radiolysis. The different parts of the system and their improvements are described in details.The system efficiency is highlighted by a comparative study of the time dependence of UO2 surface modification induced, on one hand by contact with water under irradiation by 5 MeV He2+ particles, and on the other hand by pure chemical alteration, through contact with a hydrogen peroxide solution.

Abstract

Abstract: Understanding the effect of irradiation in UO2 is a major issue for nuclear industry and for the design of irradiation resistant materials. We have previously evidenced irradiation induced defects in UO2 that can be characterized by Raman spectroscopy. Here we present the Raman characterization of these defects as a function of temperature. UO2 samples were irradiated with 25MeV He2+ ions at room temperature and then heated at different temperature without irradiation. Some samples were also irradiated at high temperature. Heat treatment after irradiation evidenced one annealing temperature on Raman spectra. This annealing temperature is shifted to higher values when the samples are simultaneously heat treated and irradiated. It is compared to the annealing temperatures that are reported in literature on irradiated UO2. This indicates that Raman observed defects would be point defects on uranium sublattice. This attribution is consistent with the one we previously proposed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A defect formation mechanism is proposed in order to explain recently observed Raman defect lines on He2+ irradiated UO2. These defects are formed by electronic stopping of He2+ even though their dE/dx is less than the threshold for track formation. Referring to literature of self-trapped excitons, this mechanism is divided in three steps: creation of electronic defects by electron stopping, stabilization of self-trapped excitons on uranium sublattice and, after accumulation of self-trapped excitons, formation of structural defect on the oxygen sublattice. This proposed mechanism still needs to be validated by more experimental evidence of the Magneli type defect proposed to be the self-trapped excitons on uranium lattice. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: The dynamic structure factor of lithium-diborate glass has been measured at several values of the momentum transfer Q using high resolution inelastic X-ray scattering. Much attention has been devoted to the low-Q-range, below the observed Ioffe–Regel crossover q IR ≃2.1nm−1. We find that below q IR, the linewidth of longitudinal acoustic waves increases with a high power of either Q, or of the frequency Ω, up to the crossover frequency Ω IR ≃9meV that nearly coincides with the center of the boson peak. This new finding strongly supports the view that resonance and hybridization of acoustic waves with a distribution of rather local low frequency modes forming the boson peak is responsible for the end of acoustic branches in strong covalent glasses. Further, we present high resolution Brillouin light-scattering data obtained at much lower frequencies on the same sample. These clearly rule out a simple Ω 2-dependence of the acoustic damping over the entire frequency range. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper reports the temperature dependence of the only Raman-active mode in fluorine UO2. Abstract

The environmental and multi-sectoral challenges faced by small islands requires consideration of sustainability issues. The sustainability challenges in these regions involve in particular the achievement of a greater autonomy through the development of local resources. This is a complex system that encompasses interconnections between the resources available and the land use. In this article we focus on the study of the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus, and propose an integrated and systemic approach to do so. Our contribution consists in studying food system sustainability of small islands by exploring the reciprocal influences between the valorization of local WEF resources and land use competition for various integrated WEF scenarios. Additionally, we integrate dietary behaviors and demonstrate their close interlinking with land use practices, and thus their impact on the potential for transitioning towards a more sustainable food system. To achieve this, we present a generic combined Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and robust optimization model. This model is then applied to Reunion island using collected real data. Our approach aims to assist local policymakers, at the island scale, by constructing insightful scenarios to facilitate informed decision-making. Our results highlight the need to save land space when developing local resources through effective land use management policies combined with a shift in food practices. This shift would imply in particular, to convert some of the sugarcane areas into subsistence farming.
