Abstract

The significance of biological diversity as a mechanism that optimizes niche breadth for resource acquisition and enhancing ecosystem functionality is well‐established. However, a significant gap remains in exploring temporal niche breadth, particularly in the context of phenological aspects of community dynamics. This study takes a unique approach by examining plant phenology, which has traditionally been focused on above‐ground assessments, and delving into the relatively unexplored realm of below‐ground processes. As a result, the influence of biological diversity on the synchronization of above‐ground and below‐ground dynamics is brought to the forefront, providing a novel perspective on this complex relationship. In this study, community traits (including plant height and greenness) and soil processes (such as root growth and detritivore feeding activity) were meticulously monitored at 2‐week intervals over a year within an experimental grassland exhibiting a spectrum of plant diversity, ranging from monocultures to 60‐species mixtures. Our findings revealed that plant diversity increased yearly plant height, root growth and detritivore feeding activity, while enhancing the synchrony between above‐ground traits and soil dynamics. Soil microclimate also played a role in shaping the phenology of these traits and processes. However, plant diversity and soil microclimate on above‐ground traits and soil dynamics effects varied considerably in strength and direction across seasons, indicating a nuanced relationship between biodiversity, climate and ecosystem processes. Notably, observations during the growing season unveiled a sequential pattern wherein peak plant community height preceded the onset of greenness. Meanwhile, root production commenced immediately after leaf senescence and persisted throughout winter. Although consistent throughout the year, detritivore activity exhibited pronounced peaks in the summer and late fall, albeit with notable variability. Synthesis. The study underscores the dynamic interplay between plant diversity, above‐ground–below‐ground phenological patterns and ecosystem functioning. It suggests that plant diversity modulates above‐ground–below‐ground interdependence through intricate phenological dynamics, with the degree of synchrony fluctuating in response to the varying combination of processes and seasonal changes. Thus, by providing comprehensive within‐year data, the research elucidates the fundamental disparities in phenological patterns across shoots, roots and soil fauna activities, thereby emphasizing the pivotal role of plant diversity in shaping ecosystem processes. Abstract

International audience; Locally, plant species richness supports many ecosystem functions. Yet, the mechanisms driving these often-positive biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationships are not well understood. Spatial resource partitioning across vertical resource gradients is one of the main hypothesized causes for enhanced ecosystem functioning in more biodiverse grasslands. Spatial resource partitioning occurs if species differ in where they acquire resources and can happen both above- and belowground. However, studies investigating spatial resource partitioning in grasslands provide inconsistent evidence. We present the results of a meta-analysis of 21 datasets from experimental species-richness gradients in grasslands. We test the hypothesis that increasing spatial resource partitioning along vertical resource gradients enhances ecosystem functioning in diverse grassland plant communities above- and belowground. To test this hypothesis, we asked three questions: 1. Does species richness enhance biomass production or community resource uptake across sites? 2. Is there evidence of spatial resource partitioning as indicated by resource tracer uptake and biomass allocation above- and belowground? 3. Is evidence of spatial resource partitioning correlated with increased biomass production or community resource uptake? Although plant species richness enhanced community nitrogen and potassium uptake and biomass production above- and belowground, we found that plant communities did not meet our criteria for spatial resource partitioning, though they did invest in significantly more aboveground biomass in higher canopy layers in mixture relative to monoculture. Furthermore, the extent of spatial resource partitioning across studies was not positively correlated with either biomass production or community resource uptake. Our results suggest that spatial resource partitioning across vertical resource gradients alone does not offer a general explanation for enhanced ecosystem functioning in more diverse temperate grasslands.

Abstract

Humans modify ecosystems and biodiversity worldwide, with negative consequences for ecosystem functioning. Promoting plant diversity is increasingly suggested as a mitigation strategy. However, our mechanistic understanding of how plant diversity affects the diversity of heterotrophic consumer communities remains limited. Here, we disentangle the relative importance of key components of plant diversity as drivers of herbivore, predator, and parasitoid species richness in experimental forests and grasslands. We find that plant species richness effects on consumer species richness are consistently positive and mediated by elevated structural and functional diversity of the plant communities. The importance of these diversity components differs across trophic levels and ecosystems, cautioning against ignoring the fundamental ecological complexity of biodiversity effects. Importantly, plant diversity effects on higher trophic-level species richness are in many cases mediated by modifications of consumer abundances.
