Abstract

Background. Ageing is associated with structural changes in brain regions and functional decline in cognitive domains. Noninvasive tools for identifying structural damage in the brains of older adults are relevant for early treatment. Aims. This study aims to evaluate and compare the accuracy of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA©) in identifying gray and white matter brain damage in older individuals with varying degrees of cognitive impairment. Methods. Ninety older adults (62 women) with an average age of 69 ± 7 years were enrolled and categorized as having no cognitive impairment (NCI), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), or moderate cognitive impairment (MoCI). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was utilized to assess the number, volume, and distribution of brain damage. The Fazekas and Scheltens scales were applied to the brain MRIs, and inferential statistics were employed to compare variables among the groups. Results. Cognitive impairment was observed in 56.7% of the participants (95% confidence interval (CI): 46.4–66.4%), with thirty-six older adults (40%) classified as MCI and 15 (17%) as MoCI. Cognitive impairment and medial temporal lobe (MTL) atrophy were found to be associated (p = 0.001), exhibiting higher mean volume scales of the MTL atrophied area in the MoCI group (p < 0.001). The MMSE accurately revealed MTL atrophy based on the Scheltens (p < 0.05) and Fazekas (p < 0.05) scales. At the same time, the MoCA accurately identified periventricular white matter (PWM) abnormalities according to the Fazekas scale (p < 0.05). Conclusions. The MMSE and MoCA screening tools effectively identified gray and white matter brain damage in older adults with varying degrees of cognitive impairment. Lower MMSE scores are associated with MTL atrophy and lesions, and lower MoCA scores are related to PWM lesions. The concurrent use of MMSE and MoCA is recommended for assessing structural changes in distinct brain regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction: The Pilates method has been indicated as a viable alternative for the treatment of people with nonspecific chronic low back pain (NSCLBP). A possible hypothesis lies in the improvement of the resistance of the muscles of the lumbar-pelvic complex (core) associated with the reduction of the painful sensation in this population. Objective: To evaluate the effect of a therapeutic intervention based on the Pilates method on the hip and trunk muscle function, pelvic alignment, core resistance and painful intensity of individuals with NSCLBP. Methodology: This is a study of nine cases of both sexes (five men) who participated in a 9-week intervention based on the Pilates method on the ground and with equipment’s. The intervention progressed over the weeks from basic to intermediate and advanced exercise levels. Three weekly sessions lasting 60 minutes were performed, and the exercise prescription was individually. Before the intervention, muscular resistance, lumbopelvic alignment and painful sensation were evaluated. Results: Significant clinical results were found for all variables at the end of the intervention. Interestingly, it was observed that the improvement of the pelvic alignment on the left side was associated with the reduction of painful sensation. Conclusion: The nine-week therapeutic intervention of the Pilates method was efficient for core muscle strength increases, for improving the biomechanical alignment of the pelvis and trunk as well as for reducing the painful perception in individuals with NSCLBP. Introducción: El método Pilates se ha indicado como una alternativa viable para el tratamiento de personas con dolor lumbar crónico inespecífico (NSCLBP). Una posible hipótesis radica en la mejora de la resistencia de los músculos del complejo lumbar-pélvico (core) asociada a la reducción de la sensación dolorosa en esta población. Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto de una intervención terapéutica basada en el método Pilates sobre la función de los músculos de la cadera y el tronco, la alineación pélvica, la resistencia del core y la intensidad del dolor en personas con NSCLBP. Metodología: Se trata de un estudio de nueve casos de ambos os sexos (cinco hombres) que participaron en una intervención de nueve semanas basada en el método Pilates en el suelo y con equipos. La intervención progresó a lo largo de las semanas desde niveles de ejercicio básico a intermedio y avanzado. Se realizaron tres sesiones semanales de 60 minutos de duración y la prescripción de ejercicio fue individual. Antes de la intervención se evaluó la resistencia muscular, la alineación lumbopélvica y la sensación dolorosa. Resultados: Se encontraron resultados clínicos significativos para todas las variables al final de la intervención. Curiosamente, se observó que la mejora de la alineación pélvica en el lado izquierdo se asoció con la reducción de la sensación dolorosa. Conclusión: La intervención terapéutica de nueve semanas del método Pilates fue eficaz para aumentar la fuerza de los músculos centrales, para mejorar la alineación biomecánica de la pelvis y el tronco, así como para reducir la percepción dolorosa en personas con NSCLBP. Introdução: O método Pilates tem sido indicado como alternativa viável para tratamento de pessoas com dor lombar crônica inespecífica (DLCI). Uma possível hipótese reside na melhora da resistência dos músculos do complexo lombo-pélvico (core) associado a diminuição da sensação dolorosa nessa população. Objetivo: Avaliar o efeito de uma intervenção terapêutica baseada no método Pilates na função muscular do quadril e do tronco, alinhamento pélvico resistência do core e intensidade dolorosa de indivíduos portadores de DLCI. Metodologia: Trata-se de um estudo de nove casos de ambos os sexos, sendo cinco homens, que participaram de uma intervenção de 9 semanas baseada no método Pilates no solo e com aparelhos. A intervenção teve progressão ao longo das semanas no nível de exercícios do básico para intermediário e avançado. Foram realizadas 3 sessões semanais com duração de 60 minutos e a prescrição do exercício foi realizada de forma individualizada. Previamente a intervenção foram avaliadas resistência muscular, alinhamento lombopélvico e sensação dolorosa. Resultados: Ao fim da intervenção foram encontrados resultados clínicos significativos para todas as variáveis. Interessantemente, foi observado que a melhoria do alinhamento pélvico do lado esquerdo associou-se à redução da sensação dolorosa. Conclusão: A intervenção terapêutica de nove semanas do método Pilates foi eficiente para o aumento da resistência dos músculos do core, para melhora do alinhamento biomecânico da pelve e do tronco bem como para diminuição da percepção dolorosa em indivíduos com DLCI.

Abstract

Background: There is a lack of studies evaluating the oral health of traditional indigenous communities in Brazil., Objectives: Thus, the objective of this study was to describe the oral health characteristics of the indigenous Fulni-ô ethnic group in Northeast Brazil., Design and Setting: A cross-sectional observational investigation was conducted within the Project on Atherosclerosis among Indigenous Populations., Methods: This study included participants of both sexes from the Fulni-ô ethnic group. The participants included in this investigation underwent a comprehensive oral health evaluation by a registered and experienced dentist to assess oral health and identify potentially malignant oral lesions. Participants with suspicious lesions were referred for biopsy. Shapiro-Wilk, Mann-Whitney, and Student's t-tests were used, and measures of central tendency and dispersion were described. Statistical significance was 5%., Results: A total of 104 individuals were included in this study. The prevalence of the use of tobacco derivatives was 94.0%, with similarities between sexes. The prevalence of oral changes in this study population was 84.4%. Fifty-one individuals who underwent oral reassessment were referred for oral lesion biopsy., Conclusions: This study demonstrated a high prevalence of oral alterations in the Fulni-ô population. Histopathological analyses indicated the presence of mild oral epithelial dysplasia in five cases.

Abstract

Background: Stroke is a major cause of mortality worldwide. Renal dysfunction is an important risk factor for stroke. Brazilian studies on stroke knowledge are generally population based. Studies stratifying stroke knowledge according to comorbidities are rare. Scientific data are essential to guide the awareness of stroke., Objective: To assess stroke knowledge in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemodialysis., Design and Setting: Cross-sectional analytical study of patients with CKD on hemodialysis in north-eastern Brazil., Methods: A self-administered questionnaire survey on stroke awareness was administered to patients with CKD on hemodialysis between April and November 2022. The chi-square test and other descriptive statistics were used. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using logistic regression., Results: A total of 197 patients were included in the analysis. The Brazilian acronym for stroke was used by 53.5% of the participants. Less than 10.0% of the sample showed optimal decision-making ability regarding stroke. Of the participants, 29.9% knew at least one risk factor and one symptom; however, this was considered as having below the minimum capacity because they did not know the emergency service call number. In the analysis adjusted for income and education, females (odds ratio [OR], 0.40%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.20-0.82), older patients (OR, 0.24%; 95% CI, 0.09-0.63) and having at most one comorbidity (OR, 0.48%; 95% CI, 0.23-0.98) were factors for lower levels of knowledge or ideal decision-making capacity against stroke., Conclusions: Patients on hemodialysis, especially women and older people, have little knowledge about stroke.
