32. Geodynamic and its influence on topography evolution in Central and Northern Europe: From the Past to the Present

Abstract

Central and Northern Europe has experienced several stages of geodynamic evolution leading to significant changes of topography in the past. Whereas the Caledonian and Variscan topographic evolution is caused by the collision of different plates at their borders the topographic and sedimentological evolution over the last 100 Myr in Central Europe occurs within the plate. Historically, fare field effects of the Alpine orogeny and the rotation of Spain are taken as the geodynamic cause for the change of the Central European Lithosphere. Nevertheless, the initial state and topography of the Central European Lithosphere at 100 Myr is important to understand the Post-100 Myr evolution. Significant exhumation, local subsidence and magmatic activities are key players during the last 100 Myr. Newly dated tectonic movements shed a new light on the multiple structural evolution during this time interval. As salt layers are important throughout the European lithosphere their influence on all processes have to be considered and understood. To unravel the geodynamic causes for the topographic evolution within the Central European plate various data sets have to be combined. Therefore, the session seeks for contributions from Central to Northern Europe including the Alpine Orogeny by using tomography, seismic interpretations, thermochronology, structural interpretations, isotopic dating, sedimentology, salt deposits magmatic and metamorphic petrology and map interpretations. We would appreciate contributions describing the Early Mesozoic geodynamic evolution of Central Europe as well.

Abstract

Tropical Africa is home to an astonishing biodiversity occurring in a variety of ecosystems. Past climatic change and geological events have impacted the evolution and diversification of this biodiversity. During the last two decades, around 90 dated molecular phylogenies of different clades across animals and plants have been published leading to an increased understanding of the diversification and speciation processes generating tropical African biodiversity. In parallel, extended geological and palaeoclimatic records together with detailed numerical simulations have refined our understanding of past geological and climatic changes in Africa. To date, these important advances have not been reviewed within a common framework. Here, we critically review and synthesize African climate, tectonics and terrestrial biodiversity evolution throughout the Cenozoic to the mid-Pleistocene, drawing on recent advances in Earth and life sciences. We first review six major geo-climatic periods defining tropical African biodiversity diversification by synthesizing 89 dated molecular phylogeny studies. Two major geo-climatic factors impacting the diversification of the sub-Saharan biota are highlighted. First, Africa underwent numerous climatic fluctuations at ancient and more recent timescales, with tectonic, greenhouse gas, and orbital forcing stimulating diversification. Second, increased aridification since the Late Eocene led to important extinction events, but also provided unique diversification opportunities shaping the current tropical African biodiversity landscape. We then review diversification studies of tropical terrestrial animal and plant clades and discuss three major models of speciation: (i) geographic speciation via vicariance (allopatry); (ii) ecological speciation impacted by climate and geological changes, and (iii) genomic speciation via genome duplication. Geographic speciation has been the most widely documented to date and is a common speciation model across tropical Africa. We conclude with four important challenges faced by tropical African biodiversity research: (i) to increase knowledge by gathering basic and fundamental biodiversity information; (ii) to improve modelling of African geophysical evolution throughout the Cenozoic via better constraints and downscaling approaches; (iii) to increase the precision of phylogenetic reconstruction and molecular dating of tropical African clades by using next generation sequencing approaches together with better fossil calibrations; (iv) finally, as done here, to integrate data better from Earth and life sciences by focusing on the interdisciplinary study of the evolution of tropical African biodiversity in a wider geodiversity context., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

International audience; The Karoo Large Igneous Province is one of the most extensively studied continental trapp [1, 2 and reference therein]. Nonetheless the nature, composition and origin of some parts of this province, and principally its youngest portions outcropping within the Lebombo province remain unclear [3]. Moreover the relationships between this province, the volcanic Mozambique oblique margin formation and the Gondwana break up are still highly debated. To better understand the composition of the mantle source(s) from which the melts originated and their geodynamic implication from Jurassic times to oceanisation within the Mozambique Channel we studied volcanic and plutonic samples from several drill holes within the South MozambicanCoastal Plain (SMCP) as well as samples from the Movene and the Bumbeni complex areas. Weconducted major, trace elements and radiogenic isotopes (Sr, Nd, Pb) analyses as well as 40Ar/39Ar dating. Our results clearly demonstrate that the SMCP basement is composed of continental lithosphere more or less modified by mantle magmatism as expected in a continental flood basalt setting. Conversely to some previous interpretations no oceanic crust is present within the SMCP which has important implications for the initial Gondwana fit[4].Our results indicate that a plume-type mantle source, more or less influenced by Sub-Continental Lithospheric Mantle and Upper Depleted ambient Mantle, is involved in the formation of all Karoo-related magmatism episodes in the area. The isotope composition of the African mantle plume is highly comparable to the one of the Afar plume suggesting that the thermal anomaly may have been active for about 200 Ma. Abstract

The Jurassic Sahtan Group exposed in northern Oman was deposited in shallow marine environments at the edge of the Arabian Platform facing the Neo-Tethys (Hamrat Duru Basin). The upper Sahtan Group is made up of a mixed siliciclastic--carbonate unit overlain by pure carbonate deposits, assigned to a Bathonian and Early Callovian age on the basis of brachiopods and foraminifers. These carbonate depositional systems were composed of outer oolitic shoals that underwent subaerial exposure, and a deeper, somewhat restricted, gently dipping shelf interior. Oolitic material was shed off the platform edge into the deep-sea depositional complex of the Guweyza Formation. The Sahtan Group is affected by an important thickness reduction towards northeastern Jabal Akhdar. The angular unconformity (0.2%) at the top of the Sahtan Group is shown to result from tilting and top truncation of genetic sequences. This unconformity is overlain by the Rayda Formation, a veneer that shows an onlap pattern including a gradual deepening upwards facies evolution. The minimal time span of the stratigraphic hiatus is Mid-Callovian--Kimmeridgian. Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian sequences were probably never deposited in this area because of lack of accommodation space and/or because of subaerial exposure. It is proposed herein that the unconformity was shaped by subaerial carbonate dissolution during a steady, tectonically driven exhumation of the platform edge. During the Tithonian, a major eustatic sea-level rise caused transgression of the Rayda Formation upon the platform edge and normal shelf marine conditions resumed in the eastern Arabian Peninsula.
