Abstract

We present highly sampled photometry of the supernova (SN) 2023ixf, a Type II SN in M101, beginning 2 days before its first known detection. To gather these data, we enlisted the global Unistellar Network of citizen scientists. These 252 observations from 115 telescopes show the SN's rising brightness associated with shock emergence followed by gradual decay. We measure a peak $M_{V}$ = -18.18 $\pm$ 0.09 mag at 2023-05-25 21:37 UTC in agreement with previously published analyses., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

On 26 September 2022 the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft impacted Dimorphos, a satellite of the asteroid 65803 Didymos. Because it is a binary system, it is possible to determine how much the orbit of the satellite changed, as part of a test of what is necessary to deflect an asteroid that might threaten Earth with an impact. In nominal cases, pre-impact predictions of the orbital period reduction ranged from ~8.8 - 17.2 minutes. Here we report optical observations of Dimorphos before, during and after the impact, from a network of citizen science telescopes across the world. We find a maximum brightening of 2.29 $\pm$ 0.14 mag upon impact. Didymos fades back to its pre-impact brightness over the course of 23.7 $\pm$ 0.7 days. We estimate lower limits on the mass contained in the ejecta, which was 0.3 - 0.5% Dimorphos' mass depending on the dust size. Abstract

More than 5,000 exoplanets have been confirmed and among them almost 4,000 were discovered by the transit method. However, few transiting exoplanets have an orbital period greater than 100 days. Here we report a transit detection of Kepler-167 e, a "Jupiter analog" exoplanet orbiting a K4 star with a period of 1,071 days, using the Unistellar ground-based telescope network. From 2021 November 18 to 20, citizen astronomers located in nine different countries gathered 43 observations, covering the 16 hour long transit. Using a nested sampling approach to combine and fit the observations, we detected the mid-transit time to be UTC 2021 November 19 17:20:51 with a 1$\sigma$ uncertainty of 9.8 minutes, making it the longest-period planet to ever have its transit detected from the ground. This is the fourth transit detection of Kepler-167 e, but the first made from the ground. This timing measurement refines the orbit and keeps the ephemeris up to date without requiring space telescopes. Abstract

The transiting planet HD80606b undergoes a 1000-fold increase in insolation during its 111-day orbit due to it being highly eccentric (e=0.93). The planet's effective temperature increases from 400K to over 1400K in a few hours as it makes a rapid passage to within 0.03AU of its host star during periapsis. Spectroscopic observations during the eclipse (which is conveniently oriented a few hours before periapsis) of HD80606b with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) are poised to exploit this highly variable environment to study a wide variety of atmospheric properties, including composition, chemical and dynamical timescales, and large scale atmospheric motions. Critical to planning and interpreting these observations is an accurate knowledge of the planet's orbit. We report on observations of two full-transit events: 7 February 2020 as observed by the TESS spacecraft and 7--8 December 2021 as observed with a worldwide network of small telescopes. We also report new radial velocity observations which when analyzed with a coupled model to the transits greatly improve the planet's orbital ephemeris. Our new orbit solution reduces the uncertainty in the transit and eclipse timing of the JWST era from tens of minutes to a few minutes. 8. Uncooled bolometer response of a low noise La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 thin film

Abstract

We report measurements of the optical responses of a La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) sample at a wavelength of 533 nm in the 300-400 K range. The 200 nm thick film was grown by pulsed laser deposition on (100) SrTiO3 substrate and showed remarkably low noise. At 335 K the temperature coefficient of the resistance of a 100 micrometers wide 300 micrometers long LSMO line was 0.017 K-1 and the normalized Hooge parameter was 9 e-30 m3, which is among the lowest reported values. We then measured an optical sensitivity at I = 5 mA of 10.4 V.W-1 and corresponding noise equivalent power (NEP) values of 8.1 e-10 W.Hz-1/2 and 3.3 e-10 W. Hz-1/2 at 30 Hz and above 1kHz, respectively. Simple considerations on bias current conditions and thermal conductance G are finally given for further sensitivity improvements using LSMO films. The performances were indeed demonstrated on bulk substrates with G of 10-3 W.K-1. One could expect a NEP reduction by three orders of magnitude if a membrane-type geometry was used, which makes this LSMO device competitive against commercially available uncooled bolometers., Comment: 15 pages. 9. YBCO Transition Edge Sensors Used For Very Low Noise Thermal Control

Abstract

In electrically substituted radiometers, the ultra low noise control of the temperature is required. In this framework, we present results dedicated to the temperature regulation of copper plates, 3 cm diameter and 1 mm thick, using YBa2Cu3O7-d (YBCO) transition edge sensors (TES). One of the TES was used as the active thermometer of the temperature control unit, whereas the two others measured the plate temperature behavior. Two heating resistors were wound along a spiral pattern, just underneath the copper plate, to minimize the heating delay. The correlation between the two TES was clearly highlighted by applying a small heat perturbation through the second distributed resistor, the path of which closely follows that of the main resistor. Calibrated temperature oscillations of 30 microK rms at 10mHz together with spectral analysis were measured and a temperature resolution in the range of a few microK rms was achieved., Comment: 6 pages, ASC 2002 (Applied Superconductivity Conference), Houston, TX USA (Aout 2002): Oral contribution, to be published in IEEE Trans. Abstract

In this work, we study the electronic properties of defects in the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructure, which is known to host a high mobility two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the interface. This 2DEG also shows photoconductance, which could be related to defects that act as deep center trapping and releasing carriers by interaction with light. This phenomenon has raised an interest for the identification of deep energy levels in the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructure. We have studied the defect state properties using electrical characterization such as capacitance-voltage (C-V), current-voltage (I-V) measurements, and deep-level transient Fourier spectroscopy (DLTFS). From C-V and I-V analyses, a hysteresis was observed indicating an effect of mobile charges in the LaAlO3. Using DLTFS, we identify three defect states located at around 0.17 eV below conduction band and at 0.23 and 0.26 eV above the valence band. These defect states were attributed to defects in SrTiO3 such as strontium vacancies or titanium vacancies. We identify a fourth defect state having an energy of about 0.69 eV below the conduction band that could be related to oxygen vacancies in LaAlO3 or in SrTiO3. In addition, the observation of an effect of the electric field with DLTFS indicated that oxygen vacancies might be involved in Fowler-Nordheim or trap-assisted tunneling through the LaAlO3 layer.

©2022Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers This work was supported by the European Union Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under Grant 737116., Single-layer magnetoresistive sensors were designed in a Wheatstone bridge configuration using La_2/_3Sr_1/_3MnO_3 ferromagnetic oxide thin film. Uniaxial anisotropy was induced by performing epitaxial deposition of the films on top of vicinal SrTiO_3 substrate. X-ray scan confirms the high crystalline quality of the films and the magnetic anisotropy was checked by magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements. Thanks to the anisotropic magnetoresistive effect and the very low noise measured in the devices, sub-nT resolution was achieved above 100 Hz at 310 K., Unión Europea. Abstract

We present the design, fabrication, and characterization of an implantable neural interface based on anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) magnetic-field sensors that combine reduced size and high performance at body temperature. The sensors are based on La0.67Sr0.33MnO3(LSMO) as a ferromagnetic material, whose epitaxial growth has been suitably engineered to get uniaxial anisotropy and large AMR output together with low noise even at low frequencies. The performance of LSMO sensors of different film thickness and at different temperatures close to 37 °C has to be explored to find an optimum sensitivity of ∼400%/T (with typical detectivity values of 2 nT·Hz–1/2at a frequency of 1 Hz and 0.3 nT·Hz–1/2at 1 kHz), fitted for the detection of low magnetic signals coming from neural activity. Biocompatibility tests of devices consisting of submillimeter-size LSMO sensors coated by a thin poly(dimethyl siloxane) polymeric layer, both in vitroand in vivo, support their high suitability as implantable detectors of low-frequency biological magnetic signals emerging from heterogeneous electrically active tissues.

Abstract

In this work, we study the electronic properties of defects in the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructure, which is known to host a high mobility two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the interface. This 2DEG also shows photoconductance, which could be related to defects that act as deep center trapping and releasing carriers by interaction with light. This phenomenon has raised an interest for the identification of deep energy levels in the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructure. We have studied the defect state properties using electrical characterization such as capacitance–voltage (C–V), current–voltage (I–V) measurements, and deep-level transient Fourier spectroscopy (DLTFS). From C–V and I–V analyses, a hysteresis was observed indicating an effect of mobile charges in the LaAlO3. Using DLTFS, we identify three defect states located at around 0.17 eV below conduction band and at 0.23 and 0.26 eV above the valence band. These defect states were attributed to defects in SrTiO3 such as strontium vacancies or titanium vacancies. We identify a fourth defect state having an energy of about 0.69 eV below the conduction band that could be related to oxygen vacancies in LaAlO3 or in SrTiO3. In addition, the observation of an effect of the electric field with DLTFS indicated that oxygen vacancies might be involved in Fowler–Nordheim or trap-assisted tunneling through the LaAlO3 layer. Persistent photoconductance is a phenomenon found in many semiconductors, by which light induces long-lived excitations in electronic states. Commonly, persistent photoexcitation leads to an increase of carriers (accumulation), though occasionally it can be negative (depletion). Here, we present the quantum well at the LaAlO 3 / SrTiO 3 interface, where in addition to photoinduced accumulation, a secondary photoexcitation enables carrier depletion. The balance between both processes is wavelength dependent, and allows tunable accumulation or depletion in an asymmetric manner, depending on the relative arrival time of photons of different frequencies. Abstract

International audience; In this paper we investigated the gate–drain access region spacing (L GD) effect on electrical and noise performance of InAlGaN/GaN metal– insulator–semiconductor high electron mobility transistors (MIS-HEMTs) using in situ SiN cap layer as gate insulator. Different L GD of InAlGaN/GaN MIS-HEMTs using sub-10 nm barrier layer are studied. Low-frequency noise measurements have been carried out for the first time in order to analyze the impact of the gate–drain spacing on the electrical characteristics. The noise of the channel under the gate has been identified as the dominant channel noise source for L GD < 10 μm. Finally, the calculated Hooge parameter (α H) is equal to 3.1 × 10 −4. It reflects the high material quality while using sub-10 nm InAlGaN layer, which is promising for high-frequency applications.

Abstract

We report measurements of the temperature coefficient of the resistance (TCR) and the low-frequency noise of epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films deposited on SrTiO3 (STO) and (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7 substrates. An x-ray-diffraction study showed that the films were (001) oriented. A normalized Hooge parameter of 9×10-31 m3 was measured at 300 K in the case of a 10-μm-wide, 575-μm-long line patterned in the 200-nm-thick film grown on STO substrate. This value is among the lowest reported values for manganites and close to values measured in standard metals and semiconductors. The corresponding noise equivalent temperature (NET) was constant in the 300–340 K range and equal to 6×10-7 K Hz-1/2 at 10 Hz and 150 μA for a 10-μm-wide, 575-μm-long line patterned in a 200-nm-thick LSMO film. This very low NET value is comparable to the best published results for manganites and was even found to be lower than the NET of other uncooled thermometers such as amorphous semiconductors, vanadium oxides, or semiconducting YBa2Cu3O6+σ. This can easily be explained by the lower noise level of epitaxial manganites thin films compared to others. The results show that despite a TCR of only 0.017 K-1 at 300 K, and thanks to a very low-noise level, LSMO thin films are real potential material for uncooled thermometry and bolometry.
