Fish of the genus Tlaloc are distributed from southern Mexico to Central America and are a distinctive example of the endemic fauna of the Mesoamerican highlands, which has been scarcely studied in Mexico. The present study provides basic life-history data for the species Tlaloc hildebrandi, T. candalarius, and T. labialis, which are native to the headwaters of the Grijalva-Usumacinta basin in southeastern Mexico. We collected 918 specimens to determine their Length-Weight Relationship (LWR), Relative Condition Factor (Kr), sex ratio, Gonadosomatic Index (GSI), fecundity, and size at first sexual maturity. Both sexes of all species had positive allometric growth, except for T. candalarius females (isometric). Mean Kr and sex ratio values differed significantly among species. Females’ GSI values differed significantly among species but were highest during the dry season in all three species. Absolute fecundity was positively correlated with standard length and weight. Sexual maturity was reached at different lengths among species. Based on these results, we suggest that all three species present an opportunistic life strategy, which is very common in fish of the order Cyprinodontiformes. These results represent a first contribution on the life-history of this group of fish and provide basic information that is fundamental to ensuring their conservation.

The antioxidant power of eugenol and vitamin C was examined by analyzing the ability of these ligands to bind to the NADPH oxidase protein target and evaluating their bond interactions with critical residues. The results confirm that docked ligands are more stable in the specified active region of 2CDU during a MD simulation of 100 ns and 2CDU protein-ligand interactions with docked ligands showed significant hydrogen bond, hydrophobic, and water bridge formation. Eugenol exhibits hydrogen bond interactions with critical residues in the selective pocket in comparison to vitamin C. Also, eugenol had a similar binding orientation and very considerable stability in the selective pocket of 2CDU with a high binding energy with lipophilic energy. The electrostatic potential maps indicate that for eugenol, the –OH and –OCH3 sites, while that the –OH and –CO functional groups in vitamin C are responsible of the antioxidant activities of these compounds. HAT and SET mechanisms suggest that eugenol may become a better antioxidant than vitamin C.

Introducción: Se realizó una revisión que permite comprender mejor por qué es necesaria una visión más integradora de la neuropsicología del adolescente para la aplicación de métodos de intervención desde las neurociencias que permitan enfrentar la conducta de riesgo sexual y reproductivo. Objetivo: Actualizar sobre los aspectos particulares de la neurofisiología de la adolescencia, que los puede hacer proclives a desarrollar una conducta de riesgo en cuanto a la función reproductiva. Material y Método: Revisión de la literatura sobre el tema, publicada en el período 2017-2022. Se utilizaron las bases de datos: PubMed/MEDLINE, Lilacs, Scielo, Cochrane, y The National Library of Medicine. Resultaron incluidas 26 fuentes bibliográficas para las citas, por reunir los requisitos de mayor especificidad, originalidad y aporte al tema. Desarrollo: El desarrollo del adolescente genera transformaciones radicales en su personalidad, que están relacionadas con cambios importantes en las estructuras cerebrales, que aún no están completamente desarrolladas. Las técnicas de resonancia magnética muestran que los principales cambios en el cerebro del adolescente afectan la corteza prefrontal, por lo que son más proclives a la falta de autorregulación y a una excesiva excitabilidad. La plasticidad de esta etapa explicaría cómo las conductas erróneas pueden imprimirse negativamente y dar lugar a las actitudes que llevan al fracaso, particularmente aquellas relacionadas con la sexualidad y la función reproductiva. Conclusiones: Se aportaron reflexiones críticas que permiten confirmar el hecho de que existen insuficiencias en los métodos para la modificación de la conducta de riesgo sexual y la función reproductiva en adolescentes. Se aportan nuevos enfoques de enfrentamiento.

The objective of this work is to contribute to the knowledge of the freshwater macroinvertebrate communities of Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico. For this region, there is only limited knowledge of its aquatic crustaceans and mollusks. A total of 13,399 freshwater macroinvertebrates were collected from four river sections in each of the three sub-basins of the region using the Surber network in four seasons of an annual cycle (2021–2022) and were preserved in 70° alcohol. Organisms belonging to seven phyla, nine (sub)classes, 21 (sub)orders and 65 families were identified. The most abundant orders were Ephemeroptera (42.03%), with greatest abundance of the family Baetidae, and the orders Trichoptera (19.11%), Diptera (15.43%), and Coleoptera (3.98%). Four families exceeded 10% relative abundance, and together they total 61.02%: Baetidae (23.84%), Hydroptilidae (13.58%), Leptohyphidae (13.03%), Chironomidae (10.57%), and Elmidae (3.23%). The order Plecoptera was recorded for the first time in Los Tuxtlas, with three families. The orders Hydrachnidae and Ostracoda, as well as six families of the order Ephemeroptera, with only one previously recorded family, and six more families of the order Diptera, were also documented. Two species of invasive aquatic mollusks were found in several rivers and basins. In this work, a high diversity of freshwater macroinvertebrates occurred compared to other sites studied in Veracruz and Mexico, and new records of these taxa are provided for the region of Los Tuxtlas.

Abstract The role of interspecific interactions in structuring low‐diversity helminth communities is a controversial topic in parasite ecology research. Most parasitic communities of fish are species‐poor; thus, interspecific interactions are believed to be unimportant in structuring these communities. We explored the factors that might contribute to the richness and coexistence of helminth parasites of a poeciliid fish in a neotropical river. Repeatability of community structure was examined in parasitic communities among 11 populations of twospot livebearer Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus in the La Antigua River basin, Veracruz, Mexico. We examined the species saturation of parasitic communities and explored the patterns of species co‐occurrence. We also quantified the associations between parasitic species pairs and analyzed the correlations between helminth species abundance to look for repeated patterns among the study populations. Our results suggest that interspecific competition could occur in species‐poor communities, aggregation plays a role in determining local richness, and intraspecific aggregation allows the coexistence of species by reducing the overall intensity of interspecific competition.

We documented the diversity of helminth parasites of 25 fish species from 8 families occurring in the headwaters of the Coatzacoalcos river basin. This river flows along the border between the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz, in the region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in south-eastern Mexico, and in northern Central America. We recorded 48 species, representing 44 genera and 29 helminth families. Six of the 25 fish species were examined for helminths for the first time; 60 new host records were reported. Nematodes and trematodes were the most abundant taxonomic groups. The helminth fauna from our study area consists of primarily central American species. Most species recorded from this area have also been captured from freshwater bodies between the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and the Isthmus of Panama. However, three species, including an acanthocephalan and two nematodes, are likely endemic to this area. We argue that, in contrast to the presence of larval helminths, which mostly depends on the geographical location of water bodies, adult helminths are an integral and consistent component of the regional community. Data on taxonomic composition and distribution of helminth fauna reported in this paper, contribute to a better understanding of this faunal component in northern Central America (CA). Furthermore, knowledge of helminth parasites of freshwater fish from Neotropical Mexico and CA facilitates prediction of which parasite species is likely to infect fish in a specific geographical area.

We studied monogenean communities of 11 populations of Astyanax aeneus (Günther) separated by small geographical distances along 60 km of the Lacantún river in Chiapas, Mexico, in February and August 2012. We found 12 monogenean taxa. Amongst these, five species specialist for Astyanax were widely distributed regionally, constituting 90% of the total collected monogeneans, with one of these species dominating most component communities. The high similarities in terms of composition between the component communities (SJaccard > 60%) as well as in terms of the abundance and composition between infracommunities (SBray Curtis > 40%), provide empirical evidence that transmission, both between hosts at the same location and between component communities, is high and effective. No resemblance pattern was detected between locations in terms of their spatial distribution. The composition of these communities was spatially and temporally consistent over the two very different weather periods sampled. These communities were not saturated. Our analysis suggests that the potential richness of the infracommunities is proportional to the number of monogenean species available in the component community. We found aggregation in the populations and between monogenean species. Intraspecific aggregation is density dependent, suggesting that intraspecific competition for space is not a limiting factor for the development of the population. We evaluated the associations for each species pair and detected 77% negative interactions (134/177 associations), suggesting that interspecific competition plays an important role in shaping these communities. The negative correlations of abundance between pairs of species contributes to confirmation of competition. Intraspecific aggregation increased relative to interspecific aggregation with richness in the component community, facilitating coexistence of the species. Our results suggest that these are interactive communities, where monogeneans disperse efficiently from a common source, colonize patches (hosts) together, and compete with other species even at low population densities. Finally, the coexistence of these species is favored by the unpredictable recruitment and aggregated use of fragmented resources. Introduction: Due to its colors, shape, size, and simplicity of care, the neotropical fish Poecilia reticulata (guppy) is popular in the aquarium trade. It is also valued as mosquito control and is now found in most of the world. Objective: To report its presence in southern Mexico. Methods: Fish were captured with seine nets in a tributary of the Grijalva River, Chiapas, in August 2019, and March 2020. Results: Two hundred and fifty individuals of P. reticulata were captured. Conclusion: The species, found in México in 1971, has extended its range to the Grijalva Usumacinta river system.

Abstract Engraulicola lamothei n. sp. (Monogenea: Gastrocotylidae) is described from the gills of Chloroscombrus chrysurus (Teleostei: Carangidae) from Veracruz, southern Gulf of Mexico. This monogenean is 1110-1670 (1328) µm long and 260-550 (363) µm wide. The haptor is asymmetrical, the long side has several clamps (35-42), and the short side has a single clamp; the posterior end has a small lappet armed with two dissimilar pairs of hooks. Male and female genital pores open near the anterior body end; the male genital pore is ventral, armed with a corona of 12 spines; the female pore is dorsal and unarmed. The new species differs from Engraulicola forcipopenis George, 1960 and from Engraulicola micropharyngella Unnithan, 1967 by lacking a pair of pointed forceps-like spines at the end of the penis amid the corona spines, and from Engraulicola thrissocles Tripathi, 1959 by the number of clamps on both sides, the number the hook pairs on the terminal lappet and the testis number. This is the first record of the genus Engaulicola George, 1960 on the Atlantic West Coast.

The data presented in this article are related to the research article entitled “Competition from sea to mountain: interactions and aggregation in low diversity monogenean and endohelminth communities in twospot livebearer Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus (Teleostei: Poeciliidae) populations in a neotropical river.” accepted for publication in Ecology and Evolution. The data describes the communities of helminth parasites in 11 populations of a small poeciliid freshwater fish Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus (Heckel, 1848) sampled along the La Antigua river basin in Veracruz, Mexico. We examined 19 P bimaculatus from one locality, 21 from another locality, and 20 from each of the other nine locations sampled in June 2016. A total of 220 individual fish were examined, and in this paper we provide the data for 18 helminth parasite taxa recorded from them. The material in this Data paper comprised the raw data on the abundance, i.e. the number of helminth individuals of each of 18 taxa found in each one individual of P. bimaculatus from each of 11 localities. The data set is contained in a single text-table including one matrix containing each of the 220 host P. bimaculatus examined from 11 localities (lines). Measures for each host P. bimaculatus include total length, standard length, maximum deep and sex, documented for everyone fish examined, plus data of the number of individual helminth of each taxa collected by each examined fish are placed in the columns. These data might be used to examine spatial distribution of helminth parasite taxa. These data might be reused to examine the spatial variation in community structure of helminth parasites of freshwater fish. This kind of data could be used to provide an assessment of human environmental impacts, or for public awareness of conservation objectives.

The data presented in this article are related to the research article entitled “Diversity of helminth parasites of freshwater fish in the headwaters of the Coatzacoalcos river, in Oaxaca, Mexico” published in International Journal for Parasitolology: Parasites and Wildlife. This dataset document the diversity of helminth parasites found in 25 fish species from 8 families from rivers in the headwaters of the Coatzacoalcos river basin at the border between Oaxaca and Veracruz states, Isthmus of Tehuantepec zone, southeastern Mexico, in the northernmost end of Central America. We record here 48 species, 44 genera and 29 helminth families. Most of the helminth species recorded in this area has also been collected from Central American bodies of freshwater south of Mexico. The material in this Data in Brief paper comprised the raw data on the abundance distribution of each helminth taxa recorded in each of the host and location; i. e. the number of helminth individuals of each helminth taxa found in each one individual fish from each species from each of the localities sampled. We describe the composition and structure of the helminth community of the black margate Anisotremus surinamensis in coral reefs from the Parque Nacional Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano (PNSAV) off the Veracruz coast. We examined a total of 78 specimens (total length TL range 21.7–77.9, mean 33.7 cm) (28 males, TL range 22.5–51.5, mean 32.7 cm; 50 females, TL range 21.7–77.9, mean 34.3 cm) of A. surinamensis. At least nine helminth taxa (seven intestinal) were found, for all of which A. surinamensis is a new host. Our inventory includes two new geographic records for the southern Gulf of Mexico: the digeneans Cainocreadium oscitans (Linton, 1910) and Infundiburictus longovatus (Hopkins, 1941). Observed component community richness (S = 9) and infracommunity richness (mean ± SD, S = 2.8 ± 1.3) for A. surinamensis were lower than previously recorded richness for the sympatric A. virginicus and other coral reef fishes from the PNSAV. Numerically dominant taxa were trematodes (four taxa) and monogeneans (two), followed by nematodes (one), acanthocephalans (and) and cestodes (one). The trematode Monorchis latus was the more prevalent, more abundant and numerically dominant helminth species in the community of parasites of A. surinamensis.

A survey of the helminth parasites of alien freshwater fishes from Argentinean Patagonia is presented, based on samples taken from 2010 to 2017 and including previous published records. A total of 1129 fishes were collected, belonging to 11 species from 7 families. We surveyed 34 localities in 12 river basins, and found 43 parasite taxa (15 digeneans, 14 monogeneans, 5 cestodes, 5 nematodes, and 4 acanthocephalans), belonging to 22 families. Data are presented as a parasite/host list with information on host species and localities, site of infection, parasite life–history stage, origin, previous records in Patagonia, and accession numbers to vouchers. The most frequently found helminths were monogeneans and digeneans. Our data suggest that invading fish in Patagonia have transmitted fewer parasite species than they have received by spillback. Twenty–three (53%) of the parasites seem to be acquired by the exotic fishes from native hosts, while 15 helminths were co–introduced along with their exotic fish host and continue to parasitize these alien fish but did not invade native hosts; 4 of these species were introduced with carp, 3 with Cheirodon interruptus, 3 with Corydoras paleatus, 3 with Cnesterodon decemmaculatus, 1 with Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, and 1 with Jenynsia multidentata. The majority of these co–introduced parasites came from the Brazilic ichthyogeographic region (10 species). This is the first review of helminth parasites of alien fishes in Argentina; in total 12 new records of parasites for Argentina, 6 new records of parasites for Patagonia, and 29 new host–parasite records are presented here. This list is far from complete, however, given that some basins in southern Patagonia remain unexplored in terms of parasite detection. RESUMEN Las guías de buenas prácticas clínicas definen una serie de pautas a través de las cuales se pueden diseñar, implementar, finalizar, analizar e informar, además de asegurar la confidencialidad. Su cumplimiento asegura públicamente la protección de los derechos, seguridad y bienestar de las personas que participan de acuerdo con los principios de Helsinki, así como la credibilidad de los datos obtenidos. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo retrospectivo de la documentación generada durante la conducción de los ensayos clínicos que se encontraban en ejecución en el período comprendido marzo 2015 a marzo 2018, Hospital Celia Sánchez Manduley, con el objetivo de valorar el cumplimiento de las normas de las buenas prácticas clínicas en el desarrollo y ejecución de los ensayos clínicos. La certificación o acreditación, de controles de calidad establecida o asistencia externa u otra validación del laboratorio, representó el 5,8 % de incumplimiento de la documentación requerida. La documentación que se requiere para el desarrollo de los ensayos clínicos demostró que se cumple en el 88.4 % y pobre participación de los miembros del comité de ética en los talleres capacitación sobre las buenas prácticas clínicas. Aseguramos el cumplimiento de las buenas prácticas clínicas en un 100 % en el año 2018. Concluimos que se cumplió el rol de la buena práctica clínica, ayuda a asegurar la protección de los participantes en la investigación y la calidad e integridad de los datos que se obtuvieron. ABSTRACT The guides to good clinical practices define a series of guidelines through which they can be designed, implemented, finalized, analysed and reported, as well as ensuring confidentiality. Its compliance publicly ensures the protection of the rights, safety and welfare of the people who participate in accordance with the Helsinki principles, as well as the credibility of the data obtained. A retrospective descriptive study of the documentation generated during the conduction of the clinical trials that were in execution in the period from March 2015 to March 2018, Hospital Celia Sánchez Manduley, with the objective of assessing the compliance with the standards of good clinical practices in the development and execution of clinical trials. The certification or accreditation, of established quality controls or external assistance or other validation of the laboratory, represented 5.8 % of non-compliance with the required documentation. The documentation required for the development of clinical trials showed that 88.4 % and poor participation of the members of the ethics committee in the workshops were trained in good clinical practices. We ensure compliance with good clinical practices by 100 % in 2018. We conclude that the role of good clinical practice was fulfilled, helps to ensure the protection of research participants and the quality and integrity of the data that is collected. They got.

Context: Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is the inevitable consequence of the use of antimicrobial agents. Thus, quinolones are an important class of antibacterials; these agents generally consist of a 1-subtituted-1,4-dihydro-4-oxopyridine-3-carboxylic acid moiety combined with an aromatic or heteroaromatic ring fused at the 5- and 6-position. Aims: To determine the binding of quinolones to DNA gyrase of Escherichia coli. Methods: An analysis was performed using an in silico approach to determine, by docking calculations and energy descriptors, the conformer of 4‐oxo‐1,4‐dihydroquinoline skeleton that forms the most stable complex with DNA gyrase of E. coli. Results: The complex shows that the pose of the quinolones coincides with the amino acid residues Asp87, Thr88, Arg91 and Met92, which is expected to be critical in the binding of quinolones to DNA gyrase of E. coli. A series of quinolones were computationally designed, and the interactions between the quinolones and the amino acid residues of the DNA gyrase were calculated. Conclusions: Among the designed compounds, compounds 105 and 115 exhibit higher binding energy values and interact with amino acids Asp87, Thr88, Arg91 and Met92.

RESUMEN Se realizó una intervención educativa en 75 gestantes con riesgo de padecer enfermedad hipertensiva gestacional, pertenecientes a la policlínica 1 Francisca Rivero Arocha de Manzanillo en Granma, desde enero hasta octubre del 2016 a fin de modificar algunos conocimientos sobre esta afección y así mejorar la calidad de vida de estas gestantes. En la casuística se obtuvo predominio de las embarazadas de 35 y más años, con antecedentes personales y familiares de hipertensión arterial crónica, nulípara y con peso normal. Antes de la acción educativa, la mayoría de las afectadas tenían nociones inadecuadas al respecto y después de esta lograron modificarlas positivamente, por lo cual se demostró la efectividad del programa de actividades aplicado. ABSTRACT An educational intervention was carried out on 75 pregnant women at risk of suffering from gestational hypertensive disease, belonging to Polyclinic 1 Francisca Rivero Arocha of Manzanillo in Granma, from January to October 2016 in order to modify some knowledge about this condition and improve the Quality of life of these pregnant women. In the sample, the prevalence of pregnant women aged 35 and over, with a personal and family history of chronic, nulliparous and normal-weight hypertension, was predominant. Before the educational action, the majority of the affected ones had inadequate notions on the subject and after this managed to modify them positively, for which the effectiveness of the program of activities was demonstrated.

This article describes the communities of monogenean parasites in 11 populations of a small characid freshwater fish Astyanax aeneus (Günther) separated by small geographical distances along 60 km of the Lacantún river in Chiapas, Mexico. We examined 15 A. aeneus from each of 11 locations (one sample in February, a second sample in August 2012), situated at the mouth of the streams opening into the main body of the Lacantún river, at the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve in the Lacandon forest, Chiapas in southern Mexico. The area of study is located ∼800 km from the mouth of the Usumacinta river in the Gulf of Mexico. In this paper we provide the data for 12 monogenean taxa. RESUMEN Introducción: la salud pública cubana está inmersa en un proceso de transformaciones iniciado en el año 2010, en el cual la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Granma también se encuentra inmersa. Objetivos: implementar un sistema de gestión de la calidad continúa en el sistema de salud pública de la provincia de Granma en aras de lograr la satisfacción de la población Método: se describen las cuatro dimensiones que se tienen en cuenta (empoderamiento, acreditación de las carreras universitarias, acreditación de los servicios hospitalarios y metrología y normalización. Resultados: se desarrollan talleres que involucran a todos los trabajadores para lo que se requiere de los procesos de acreditación de los procesos docentes, crear grupos de expertos para realizar procesos de autoevaluación, y del cambio en los servicios hospitalarios apoyados en el sistema de normalización y acreditación. Conclusiones: el sistema de gestión de calidad en salud en Granma está encaminado a la garantía y mejora continua de los procesos universitarios en las instituciones formadoras de la provincia para la acreditación y certificación nacional, además a lograr la acreditación hospitalaria para la mejora continua de los procesos que se realizan en los diferentes servicios sustentado en un aseguramiento metrológico sólido que permita la sostenibilidad de la tecnología instalada y en el cumplimiento de las legislaciones, normas, guías de práctica clínica y protocolos de actuación. ABSTRACT Introduction: cuban public health is immersed in a process of transformation initiated in 2010, in which the Medical Sciences University, from Granma province is also immersed. Objectives: to implement a quality management system continues in the public health system of the province of Granma in order to achieve the satisfaction of the population Method: it describes the four dimensions that are taken into account (empowerment, accreditation of university careers, accreditation of hospital services and metrology and standardization. Results: workshops are held that involve all workers for what is required of the processes of accreditation of teaching processes, create groups of experts to carry out self-evaluation processes, and change in hospital services supported by the standardization system and accreditation. Conclusions: the health quality management system in Granma is aimed at ensuring and continuous improvement of university processes in the training institutions of the province for national accreditation and certification, as well as achieving hospital accreditation for the continuous improvement of processes that are carried out in the different services based on a solid metrological assurance that allows the sustainability of the installed technology and compliance with legislation, standards, clinical practice guidelines and action protocols.

RESUMEN La sepsis vaginal es una de las causas más frecuente de consulta médica en el servicio de ginecología, son varios los microorganismos que causan esta enfermedad, actualmente las adolescentes son un grupo vulnerable ante estas infecciones, por lo que se realizó este trabajo con el objetivo de describir la incidencia de la sepsis vaginal en las adolescentes del consejo popular 6 que asistieron a la consulta de ginecología. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, retrospectivo y transversal en 75 de estas adolescentes desde septiembre del 2015 hasta febrero 2016, el cual demostró una alta incidencia de sepsis vaginal en las pacientes entre 17-19 años de edad, que iniciaron sus relaciones sexuales entre 14-17 años y tenían antecedentes de promiscuidad, no usaban preservativo para sus relaciones sexuales, predominó fundamentalmente la infección por Cándida albicans, seguida de la Ganderella vaginalis, los síntomas más frecuentes fueron el prurito y la leucorrea. Los resultados más relevantes fueron en las adolescentes de 17 a 19 años, con un 92.9 %, de sepsis vaginal de igual forma la promiscuidad estuvo en un 95.24 %.Concluimos que predominaron las adolescentes con sepsis vaginal de 17-19 años, que iniciaron precozmente sus relaciones sexuales, con antecedentes de promiscuidad, quienes no utilizaban el condón como método de prevención de las infecciones vaginales. ABSTRACT Vaginal sepsis is one of the most frequent of medical Consultation in gynecology services, varied are microorganisms causing this disease. Nowadays, adolescents are a vulnerable group facing these infections, which is why we wrote this paper with the objective of describing incidence of vaginal sepsis in adolescents from popular council 6 assisted in gynecology doctor´s office. A descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study was made in 75 adolescents from September 2015 to February 2016 which demonstrated a high incidence of vaginal sepsis in patients between 14-17 years old, they had promiscuity antecedent, they did not use condom for their sexual intercourse, it prevailed infection by Candida albicans followed by Gardnerella vaginalis, most frequent symptoms were itching and leucorrhea. The most relevant results were in adolescents from 17 to 19 years old (92, 9 %) suffering from vaginal sepsis, promiscuity was also in 95, 24 %. We conclude that adolescents with vaginal sepsis from 17 to 19 years old prevailed, they began early sexual relations with promiscuity antecedent, and they did no use condom as a prevention method for vaginal infections.

In this paper we provide new records and range extensions for four intestinal helminth species parasites of profundulid fishes. Our data extends the known geographical distribution of these species from Guerrero, southern Mexico to nuclear Central American countries and southward to Honduras. Three of the helminth species here studied are specific to profundulids, the digenean Paracreptotrema profundulusi and the nematodes Spinitectus humbertoi and Rhabdochona salgadoi. Our data confirm that these species are distributed only with profundulids and within the geographical range of this fish family. Therefore, the data presented in this study partially contributes to empirically support the idea that each fish family has “its own” suite of parasites that are not shared with other fish families, and that freshwater fish parasites are distributed within the limits of the range of the fish family.

Se realizó un inventario y se calcularon los parámetros de infección de los helmintos gastrointestinales de 36 ejemplares de aves acuáticas pertenecientes a las familias Anatidae, Rallidae y Threskiornithidae, procedentes de la subcuenca alta del río Lerma, Estado de México, identificándose 20 especies: 9 tremátodos, 8 céstodos, 2 nemátodos y 1 acantocéfalo. De las 8 especies de céstodos, 6 son registros nuevos para el país y Pseudocorynosoma constrictum se registra por primera vez en Anas crecca, Anas discors, Oxyura jamaicensis y Fulica americana. Los helmintos que presentaron las prevalencias más altas fueron los céstodos Hymenolepis megalops y Sobolevicanthus krabbeella en Anas acuta, Anas clypeata, Anas cyanoptera y Anas crecca.A survey of helminth parasites in 36 waterfowl species from the upper Lerma River, in central Mexico was conducted. A total of 20 helminth species were recorded, including 9 trematodes, 8 cestodes, 2 nematodes and 1 acanthocephalan. Six of the cestode species are recorded for the fisrt time from Mexican birds; the acanthocephalan Pseudocorynosoma constrictum is reported for the first time in Anas crecca, A. discors, Oxyura jamaicensis and Fulica americana. The highest prevalences were recorded for the cestodes Hymenolepis megalops and Sobolevicanthus krabbeella in Anas acuta, A. clypeata, A. cyanoptera and A. crecca.

The Asian fish tapeworm, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi, has been considered one of the most dangerous parasites for cultured carp and a risk for native freshwater fish populations worldwide. This cestode is highly pathogenic for fishes especially fry. In this paper we record B. acheilognathi parasitizing the endangered and endemic freshwater fish Profundulus hildebrandi from the endorheic basin of San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. B. acheilognathi was recorded from 10 of the 11 sampled localities, with high values of prevalence (>60%) and mean abundance (>4.50). The infection was persistent all through the year; gravid cestodes were recorded in all samples. It is assumed that B. acheilognathi entered to this area through the introduction of common carp Cyprinus carpio, for aquacultural purposes. The data presented in this paper document the successful introduction, colonization and establishment of this alien species into the endangered P. hildebrandi. Rev. Biol. Trop. 59 (3): 1099-1104. Epub 2011 September 01.El céstodo Asiático, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi, es considerado como uno de los helmintos más peligrosos para peces de cultivo, y un riesgo potencial para las poblaciones silvestres de peces en todo el mundo. La patología que causa es grave, principalmente en larvas y juveniles de peces. En este trabajo registramos la presencia de B. acheilognathi en el pez endémico de Chiapas y amenazado de extinción, Profundulus hildebrandi, en la cuenca endorreica de San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, México. El céstodo B. acheilognathi fue registrado en 10 de las 11 localidades muestreadas, con valores altos de prevalencia (>60%) e intensidad promedio (>4.50). Registramos esta infección durante todo el año, con presencia de céstodos grávidos en todos los meses muestreados. Asumimos que B. acheilognathi ingresó a esta área geográfica con la introducción de la carpa común, Cyprinus carpio, para acuicultura. Los datos que presentamos en este trabajo documentan la introducción exitosa, la colonización y el establecimiento de esta especie exótica de parásito sobre P. hildebrandi, especie dulceacuícola, endémica y amenazada de extinción.

Specimens of Spinitectus osorioi Choudhury and Pérez-Ponce de León, an intestinal nematode species previously considered to be specific to Chirostoma spp and endemic to some lakes in the Pacific drainage in Michoacán, were collected from the freshwater fish Atherinella alvarezi (Díaz-Pardo) (Atherinopsidae) of the Michol River near Palenque, Chiapas, Southern Mexico, which belongs to the Atlantic drainage system. Studies using light and scanning electron microscopy revealed some taxonomically important, previously unreported or erroneously reported features of S. osorioi, such as the location of the vulva, the actual number and distribution of postanal papillae and phasmids and the presence of a short median cuticular ridge anterior to the cloacal opening (in addition to two long subventral ridges). The recorded somewhat shorter spicules (420-465 and 105-111 μm) and mostly smaller eggs (33-36 × 18-20 μm) as compared to the original species description may be due to a different type of host, geographical region or generally smaller body measurements of these specimens. These biometrical differences are considered to be within the limits of the intraspecific variability of S. osorioi. A key to species of Spinitectus parasitizing freshwater fishes in Mexico is provided.

A comparative study based on potential energy surfaces (PES) of 2-butanedioic and hypothetic 2-butanedioic/HCl acids is useful for understanding the maleic acid isomerization. The PES enables locating conformers of minimum energy, intermediates of reactions and transition states. From contour diagrams, a set of possible reaction paths are depicted interconnecting the proposed structures. The study was carried out in absentia and in the presence of the catalyst (HCl), using an solvatation model provided by the Gaussian software package. Clearly, the effect of HCl is given by new reaction paths with lower energetic barriers in relation to the reaction without catalyzing.

The aim of this paper is to study the family of halobenzenes for characterizing their intrinsic reactivity and in this way to establish a rational order of the intrinsic reactivity of this family of molecules in the electrophilic aromatic substitution. This study was carried out in the framework of Density Functional Theory which provides a global and local index that can be used in the characterization of the reactivity. This index is related to some concept derivatives of experimental chemistry, being a good approach to the characterization of halobenzenes.

Polythiophene (PTh) and its derivatives are polymer-based materials with a π-conjugation framework. PTh is a useful photoelectric material and can be used in organic semiconductor devices, such as PLED, OLED, and solar cells. Their properties are based on molecular structure; the derivatives contain different substitutes in the 3 and 5 positions, such as electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups. All molecular geometries were optimized at B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory. The energy gap (Egap) between the HOMO and LUMO levels is related to the π-conjugation in the PTh polymer backbone. In this study, the DFT calculations were performed for the nonsubstituted and 3,5-substituted variants to investigate the stability geometries and electrical properties. The theoretical calculations show that the substituted forms are stable, have low Egap, and are in good agreement with the experimental observations.

The problem of convenient access to quantitative Hückel-level descriptions of Möbius and Hückel annulenes for undergraduate lectures about aromaticity is discussed. Frost circle, Zimmerman circle, double circle and Langler semicircular mnemonics are described. The relationship between spectra (complete sets of secular equation roots) for an isoconjugate pair of Hückel and Möbius annulenes and the corresponding acyclic polyene with one less carbon is fully developed. In addition to providing an alternative path to exact spectrum roots, this relationship provides immediate access to almost half of the eigenfunctions for an isoconjugate annulene pair. The remaining eigenfunctions may be obtained very easily.

In this paper we analyse the degree of concordance in species richness and taxonomic distinctness (diversity) patterns among different freshwater taxonomic groups in order to test three long held patterns described in Mexican freshwater biogeography: 1. The aquatic biota of Mexico includes two distinct faunas, a rich Neotropical component in the south and a south-eastern region and a less rich Nearctic component towards central and northern latitudes of the country. 2. A hotspot of species richness and diversity has been recorded in the Usumacinta, including the Yucatan Peninsula. 3. The presence of two distinct biotas in Mexico, an eastern one distributed along the Gulf of Mexico slope, and a western one associated to the Pacific versant. We use species richness and taxonomic distinctness to explore patterns of diversity and how these patterns change between zoogeographical regions. This paper points out a clear separation between Neotropical and Nearctic drainage basins but also between eastern (Gulf of Mexico) and western (Pacific) drainage basins. Present data gives additional empirical support from freshwater biota for three long held beliefs regarding distributional patterns of the Mexican biota. The neotropical basins of Mexico are generally host to a richest and more diversified fauna, that includes more families, genera and species, compared to the less rich and less diverse fauna in the nearctic basins.

In this paper, we analyse the distributional patterns of adult helminth parasites of freshwater fishes with respect to the main hydrological basins of Mexico. We use the taxonomic distinctness and the variation in taxonomic distinctness to explore patterns of parasite diversity and how these patterns change between zoogeographical regions. We address questions about the factors that determine the variation of observed diversity of helminths between basins. We also investigate patterns of richness, taxonomic distinctness and distance decay of similarity amongst basins. Our analyses suggest that the evolution of the fauna of helminth parasites in Mexico is mostly dominated by independent host colonization events and that intra--host speciation could be a minor factor explaining the origin of this diversity. This paper points out a clear separation between the helminth faunas of northern--nearctic and southern--neotropical components in Mexican continental waters, suggesting the availability of two distinct taxonomic pools of parasites in Mexican drainage basins. Data identifies Mexican drainage basins as unities inhabited by freshwater fishes, hosting a mixture of neotropical and nearctic species, in addition, data confirms neotropical and neartic basins/helminth faunas. The neotropical basins of Mexico are host to a richest and more diversified helminth fauna, including more families, genera and species, compared to the less rich and less diverse helminth fauna in the nearctic basins. The present analysis confirms distance--decay as one of the important factors contributing to the patterns of diversity observed. The hypothesis that helminth diversity could be explained by the ichthyological diversity of the basin received no support from present analysis.

In order to draw patterns in helminth parasite composition and species richness in Mexican freshwater fishes we analyse a presence-absence matrix representing every species of adult helminth parasites of freshwater fishes from 23 Mexican hydrological basins. We examine the distributional patterns of the helminth parasites with regard to the main hydrological basins of the country, and in doing so we identify areas of high diversity and point out the biotic similarities and differences among drainage basins. Our dataset allows us to evaluate the relationships among drainage basins in terms of helminth diversity. This paper shows that the helminth fauna of freshwater fishes of Mexico can characterise hydrological basins the same way as fish families do, and that the basins of south-eastern Mexico are home to a rich, predominantly Neotropical, helminth fauna whereas the basins of the Mexican Highland Plateau and the Nearctic area of Mexico harbour a less diverse Nearctic fauna, following the same pattern of distribution of their fish host families. The composition of the helminth fauna of each particular basin depends on the structure of the fish community rather than on the limnological characteristics and geographical position of the basin itself. This work shows distance decay of similarity and a clear linkage between host and parasite distributions.

The M06 family of density functionals has been assessed for the calculation of the molecular structure and properties of the Naringin molecule. The chemical reactivity descriptors have been calculated through Conceptual DFT. The active sites for nucleophilic and electrophilic attacks have been chosen by relating them to the Fukui function indices and the dual descriptor f(2)(r). A comparison between the descriptors calculated through vertical energy values and those arising from the Koopmans' theorem approximation has been performed in order to check for the validity of the last procedure.

The binding of ethambutol to the C-terminal domain of the arabinosyltransferase from Mycobacterium tuberculosis was studied. The analysis was performed using an in silico approach in order to find out, by docking calculations and energy descriptors, the conformer of Ethambutol that forms the most stable complex with the C-terminal domain of arabinosyltransferase. The complex shows that location of the Ethambutol coincides with the cocrystallization ligand position and that amino acid residues ASH1051, ASN740, ASP1052, and ARG1055 should be critical in the binding of Ethambutol to C-terminal domain EmbC.

Abstract: Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on triphenylamine (TPA) as a donor group linked with the acceptor cyanoacrylic acid electron acceptor by 2,2’-bithiophene as π-bridged (D-π-A) has been investigated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level of theory, to establish the conformational orientation of cyanoacrylic acid group as well as evaluate the effect of planarizing the 2,2’-bithiophene unit in position 3 and 3’ by electron withdrawing or donor groups on the electronic structure properties of ground and doping(n,p) states. Also, the Time Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) at the CPCM-TD-CAM-B3LYP//CAM-B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level of theory were selected to modulate the electronic absorption spectra and charge-transfer capabilities of the molecules analyzed in the present work. The results indicate that adding an auxiliary donor or withdrawing group to the 2,2’-bithiophene in the (D-π-A) arrangement allow to modify the LUMO’s energy of the dyes, while the HOMO's energy is slightly affected.
