1. Physical conditions in Centaurus A's northern filaments II: Does the HCO$^+$ emission highlight the presence of shocks?

Abstract: Abridged: We present the first observation of the HCO+(1-0) and HCN(1-0) emission in the northern filaments of Centaurus A with ALMA. HCO+(1-0) is detected in 9 clumps of the Horseshoe complex, with similar velocities as the CO(1-0) emission. Conversely, the HCN(1-0) is not detected and we derive upper limits on the flux. At a resolution of ~40 pc, the line ratio of the velocity-integrated intensities I_HCO+/I_CO varies between 0.03 and 0.08, while I_HCO+/I_HCN is higher than unity with an average lower limit of 1.51. These ratios are significantly higher than what is observed in nearby star-forming galaxies. Moreover, the ratio I_HCO+/I_CO decreases with increasing CO integrated intensity, contrary to what is observed in the star-forming galaxies. This indicates that the HCO+ emission is enhanced and may not arise from dense gas within the Horseshoe complex. This hypothesis is strengthened by the average line ratio I_HCN/I_CO<0.03 which suggests that the gas density is rather low. Using non-LTE, large velocity gradient modelling with RADEX, we explored two possible phases of the gas, that we call "diffuse" and "dense", and are characterised by a significant difference in the HCO+ relative abundance to CO, respectively N_HCO+/N_CO=10^-3 and 3x10^-5. The average CO(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) integrated intensities and the upper limit on HCN(1-0) are compatible with both "diffuse" and "dense" gas. The spectral setup of the present observations also covers the SiO(2-1). While undetected, the upper limit on SiO(2-1) is not compatible with the RADEX predictions for the "dense" gas. We conclude that the 9 molecular clouds detected in HCO+(1-0) are likely dominated by diffuse molecular gas. While the exact origin of the HCO+(1-0) emission remains to be investigated, it is likely related to the energy injection within the molecular gas that prevents gravitational collapse and star formation., Comment: in press to A&A, spelling edited

2. A Latent Implicit 3D Shape Model for Multiple Levels of Detail

Abstract: Implicit neural representations map a shape-specific latent code and a 3D coordinate to its corresponding signed distance (SDF) value. However, this approach only offers a single level of detail. Emulating low levels of detail can be achieved with shallow networks, but the generated shapes are typically not smooth. Alternatively, some network designs offer multiple levels of detail, but are limited to overfitting a single object. To address this, we propose a new shape modeling approach, which enables multiple levels of detail and guarantees a smooth surface at each level. At the core, we introduce a novel latent conditioning for a multiscale and bandwith-limited neural architecture. This results in a deep parameterization of multiple shapes, where early layers quickly output approximated SDF values. This allows to balance speed and accuracy within a single network and enhance the efficiency of implicit scene rendering. We demonstrate that by limiting the bandwidth of the network, we can maintain smooth surfaces across all levels of detail. Abstract: We present JWST/MIRI MRS spatially resolved $\sim 5-28\,\mu$m observations of the central ~4-8kpc of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy and broad absorption line quasar Mrk231. These are part of the Mid-Infrared Characterization of Nearby Iconic galaxy Centers (MICONIC) program of the MIRI European Consortium guaranteed time observations. No high excitation lines (i.e., [MgV] at 5.61$\mu$m or [NeV] at 14.32$\mu$m) typically associated with the presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) are detected in the nuclear region of Mrk231. This is likely due to the intrinsically X-ray weak nature of its quasar. Some intermediate ionization potential lines, for instance, [ArIII] at 8.99$\mu$m and [SIV] at 10.51$\mu$m, are not detected either, even though they are clearly observed in a star-forming region ~920pc south-east of the AGN. Thus, the strong nuclear mid-infrared (mid-IR) continuum is also in part hampering the detection of faint lines in the nuclear region. The nuclear [NeIII]/[NeII]line ratio is consistent with values observed in star-forming galaxies. Moreover, we resolve for the first time the nuclear starburst in the mid-IR low-excitation line emission (size of ~400pc, FWHM). Several pieces of evidence also indicate that it is partly obscured even at these wavelengths. At the AGN position, the ionized and warm molecular gas emission lines have modest widths (W_80~300km/s). There are, however, weak blueshifted wings reaching velocities v_02~-400km/s in [NeII]. The nuclear starburst is at the center of a large (~8kpc), massive rotating disk with widely-spread, low velocity outflows. Given the high star formation rate of Mrk231, we speculate that part of the nuclear outflows and the large-scale non-circular motions observed in the mid-IR are driven by its powerful nuclear starburst., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. 5. Radiative and mechanical energies in galaxies I. Contributions of molecular shocks and PDRs in 3C 326 N

Abstract: Context: Atomic and molecular lines in galaxies offer insights into energy budgets and feedback mechanisms. Aims: This study establishes a new framework for interpreting these lines and deducing energy budgets from observations. Methods: Atomic and molecular lines detected in a given object are assumed to result from the combination of distributions of shocks and photo-dissociation regions (PDR). Using the Paris-Durham shock code and the Meudon PDR code, emissions are computed over a wide range of parameters. Total emissions are calculated using probability distribution functions, with a defined distance metric based on observed and predicted intensity ratios. Results: We analyze the radio galaxy 3C 326 N, finding both shocks and PDRs necessary to explain the line fluxes. Viable solutions occur only at low densities ($\rm n_H < 100 cm^{-3}$), indicating emission from diffuse interstellar matter. The optimal solution involves low-velocity shocks (5-20 km/s) in PDRs illuminated by UV radiation ten times stronger than in the solar neighborhood. The H$2$ 0-0 S(0) $28 \mu$m, [CII] $158 \mu$m, and [OI] $63 \mu$m lines originate from PDRs, while other H$2$ lines mostly come from shocks. The reprocessed radiative and mechanical energies are $\rm {L_{UV} = 6.3\times10^9 L\odot}$ and $\rm {L_K = 3.9\times10^8 L_\odot}$, respectively, in agreement with 3C 326 N's infrared luminosity, and consistent with 1% of the AGN jet kinetic power dissipated in the interstellar medium. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the radiative and mechanical energy budgets of galaxies can be derived from observations of atomic and molecular lines alone. It highlights the unexpected importance of the diffuse medium for 3C 326 N. 6. JWST observations of the Horsehead photon-dominated region I. First results from multi-band near- and mid-infrared imaging

Abstract: The JWST has captured the sharpest IR images ever taken of the Horsehead nebula, a prototypical moderately irradiated PDR that is fully representative of most of the UV-illuminated molecular gas in the Milky Way and star-forming galaxies. We investigate the impact of FUV radiation of a molecular cloud and constrain the structure of the edge of the PDR and its illumination conditions. We used NIRCam and MIRI to obtain 17 broadband and 6 narrowband maps from 0.7 to 28 $\mu$m. We mapped the dust emission, scattered light, and several gas phase lines. We also used HST-WFC3 maps at 1.1 and 1. 6 $\mu$m, along with HST-STIS spectroscopic observations of the H$\alpha$ line. We probed the structure of the edge of the Horsehead and resolved its spatial complexity. We detected a network of faint striated features extending perpendicularly to the PDR front into the H\,II region in filters sensitive to nano-grain emission and light scattered by larger grains. This may indeed figure as the first detection of the entrainment of dust particles in the evaporative flow. The map of the 1-0 S(1) line of H$_2$ presents sharp sub-structures on scales as small as 1.5 arcsec. The ionization and dissociation fronts appear at distances 1-2 arcsec behind the edge of the PDR and seem to spatially coincide, indicating a thickness of the neutral atomic layer below 100 au. All broadband maps present strong color variations which can be explained by dust attenuation. Deviations of the emissions in the H$\alpha$, Pa$\alpha,$ and Br$\alpha$ lines also indicate dust attenuation. With a very simple model, we derive the main features of the extinction curve. A small excess of extinction at 3 $\mu$m may be attributed to icy H$_2$O mantles onto grains. In all lines of sight crossing the inner regions of the Horsehead, it appears that dust attenuation is non-negligible over the entire spectral range., Comment: 25 pages, 17 figures

Abstract: Mid-infrared emission features probe the properties of ionized gas, and hot or warm molecular gas. The Orion Bar is a frequently studied photodissociation region (PDR) containing large amounts of gas under these conditions, and was observed with the MIRI IFU aboard JWST as part of the "PDRs4All" program. The resulting IR spectroscopic images of high angular resolution (0.2") reveal a rich observational inventory of mid-IR emission lines, and spatially resolve the substructure of the PDR, with a mosaic cutting perpendicularly across the ionization front and three dissociation fronts. We extracted five spectra that represent the ionized, atomic, and molecular gas layers, and measured the most prominent gas emission lines. An initial analysis summarizes the physical conditions of the gas and the potential of these data. We identified around 100 lines, report an additional 18 lines that remain unidentified, and measured the line intensities and central wavelengths. The H I recombination lines originating from the ionized gas layer bordering the PDR, have intensity ratios that are well matched by emissivity coefficients from H recombination theory, but deviate up to 10% due contamination by He I lines. We report the observed emission lines of various ionization stages of Ne, P, S, Cl, Ar, Fe, and Ni, and show how certain line ratios vary between the five regions. We observe the pure-rotational H$_2$ lines in the vibrational ground state from 0-0 S(1) to 0-0 S(8), and in the first vibrationally excited state from 1-1 S(5) to 1-1 S(9). We derive H$_2$ excitation diagrams, and approximate the excitation with one thermal (~700 K) component representative of an average gas temperature, and one non-thermal component (~2700 K) probing the effect of UV pumping. We compare these results to an existing model for the Orion Bar PDR and highlight the differences with the observations., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. Abstract: The Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) aboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) provides the observatory with a huge advance in mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopy covering the wavelength range of 5 to 28 microns. This paper describes the performance and characteristics of the MIRI imager as understood during observatory commissioning activities, and through its first year of science operations. We discuss the measurements and results of the imager's point spread function, flux calibration, background, distortion and flat fields as well as results pertaining to best observing practices for MIRI imaging, and discuss known imaging artefacts that may be seen during or after data processing. Overall, we show that the MIRI imager has met or exceeded all its pre-flight requirements, and we expect it to make a significant contribution to mid-infrared science for the astronomy community for years to come.

Abstract: Most low-mass stars form in stellar clusters that also contain massive stars, which are sources of far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation. Theoretical models predict that this FUV radiation produces photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) on the surfaces of protoplanetary disks around low-mass stars, impacting planet formation within the disks. We report JWST and Atacama Large Millimetere Array observations of a FUV-irradiated protoplanetary disk in the Orion Nebula. Emission lines are detected from the PDR; modelling their kinematics and excitation allows us to constrain the physical conditions within the gas. We quantify the mass-loss rate induced by the FUV irradiation, finding it is sufficient to remove gas from the disk in less than a million years. This is rapid enough to affect giant planet formation in the disk.

10. Absorption of Millimeter-band CO and CN in the Early Universe: Molecular Clouds in Radio Galaxy B2 0902+34 at Redshift 3.4

Abstract: Using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), we have detected absorption lines due to carbon-monoxide, CO(J=0-1), and the cyano radical, CN(N=0-1), associated with radio galaxy B2 0902+34 at redshift z=3.4. The detection of millimeter-band absorption observed 1.5 Gyr after the Big Bang facilitates studying molecular clouds down to gas masses inaccessible to emission-line observations. The CO absorption in B2 0902+34 has a peak optical depth of $\tau$ $\ge$ 8.6% and consists of two components, one of which has the same redshift as previously detected 21-cm absorption of neutral hydrogen (HI) gas. Each CO component traces an integrated H$_2$ column density of N(H2) $\ge$ 3x10$^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$. CN absorption is detected for both CO components, as well as for a blueshifted component not detected in CO, with CO/CN line ratios ranging from $\le$0.4 to 2.4. We discuss the scenario that the absorption components originate from collections of small and dense molecular clouds that are embedded in a region with more diffuse gas and high turbulence, possibly within the influence of the central Active Galactic Nucleus or starburst region. The degree of reddening in B2 0902+34, with a rest-frame color B-K ~ 4.2, is lower than the very red colors (B-K > 6) found among other known redshifted CO absorption systems at z<1. Nevertheless, when including also the many non-detections from the literature, a potential correlation between the absorption-line strength and B-K color is evident, giving weight to the argument that the red colors of CO absorbers are due to a high dust content., Comment: Accepted by ApJ (submitted 25-Sept-2023, accepted 27-Dec-2023)

11. A consistent derivation of soil stiffness from elastic wave speeds

Abstract: Elastic wave speeds are fundamental in geomechanics and have historically been described by an analytic formula that assumes linearly elastic solid medium. Empirical relations stemming from this assumption were used to determine nonlinearly elastic stiffness relations that depend on pressure, density, and other state variables. Evidently, this approach introduces a mathematical and physical disconnect between the derivation of the analytical wave speed (and thus stiffness) and the empirically generated stiffness constants. In our study, we derive wave speeds for energy-conserving (hyperelastic) and non-energy-conserving (hypoelastic) constitutive models that have a general dependence on pressure and density. Under isotropic compression states, the analytical solutions for both models converge to previously documented empirical relations. Conversely, in the presence of shear, hyperelasticity predicts changes in the longitudinal and transverse wave speed ratio. This prediction arises from terms that ensure energy conservation in the hyperelastic model, without needing fabric to predict such an evolution, as was sometimes assumed in previous investigations. Such insights from hyperelasticity could explain the previously unaccounted-for evolution of longitudinal wave speeds in oedometric compression. Finally, the procedure used herein is general and could be extended to account for other relevant state variables of soils, such as grain-size, grain-shape, or saturation., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: Astrometry is one of the main pillars of astronomy, and one of its oldest branches. Over the years, an increasing number of astrometric works by means of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data have revolutionized our understanding of various phenomena. With the launch of JWST, it becomes almost instinctive to want to replicate or improve these results with data taken with the newest, state-of-the-art, space-based telescope. In this regard, the initial focus of the community has been on the Near-Infrared (NIR) detectors on board of JWST because of their high spatial resolution. This paper begins the effort to capture and apply what has been learned from HST to the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) of JWST by developing the tools to obtain high-precision astrometry and photometry with its imager. We describe in detail how to create accurate effective point-spread-function (ePSF) models and geometric-distortion corrections, analyze their temporal stability, and test their quality to the extent of what is currently possible with the available data in the JWST MAST archive. We show that careful data reduction provides deep insight on the performance and intricacies of the MIRI imager, and of JWST in general. In an effort to help the community to devise new observing programs, we make our ePSF models and geometric-distortion corrections publicly available., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, 1 table. Abstract: While modeling people wearing tight-fitting clothing has made great strides in recent years, loose-fitting clothing remains a challenge. We propose a method that delivers realistic garment models from real-world images, regardless of garment shape or deformation. To this end, we introduce a fitting approach that utilizes shape and deformation priors learned from synthetic data to accurately capture garment shapes and deformations, including large ones. Abstract: The Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation between the gas and the star formation rate (SFR) surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm gas}$-$\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) is essential to understand star formation processes in galaxies. So far, it has been measured up to z~2.5 in main-sequence galaxies. In this letter, we aim to put constraints at z~4.5 using a sample of four massive main-sequence galaxies observed by ALMA at high resolution. We obtained ~0.3"-resolution [CII] and continuum maps of our objects, which we then converted into gas and obscured SFR surface density maps. In addition, we produced unobscured SFR surface density maps by convolving Hubble ancillary data in the rest-frame UV. We then derived the average $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ in various $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$ bins, and estimated the uncertainties using a Monte Carlo sampling. Our galaxy sample follows the KS relation measured in main-sequence galaxies at lower redshift and is slightly lower than predictions from simulations. Our data points probe the high end both in terms of $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$, and gas depletion timescales (285-843 Myr) remain similar to z~2 objects. However, three of our objects are clearly morphologically disturbed, and we could have expected shorter gas depletion timescales (~100 Myr) similar to merger-driven starbursts at lower redshifts. Abstract: (Abridged) We investigate the impact of radiative feedback from massive stars on their natal cloud and focus on the transition from the HII region to the atomic PDR (crossing the ionisation front (IF)), and the subsequent transition to the molecular PDR (crossing the dissociation front (DF)). We use high-resolution near-IR integral field spectroscopic data from NIRSpec on JWST to observe the Orion Bar PDR as part of the PDRs4All JWST Early Release Science Program. The NIRSpec data reveal a forest of lines including, but not limited to, HeI, HI, and CI recombination lines, ionic lines, OI and NI fluorescence lines, Aromatic Infrared Bands (AIBs including aromatic CH, aliphatic CH, and their CD counterparts), CO2 ice, pure rotational and ro-vibrational lines from H2, and ro-vibrational lines HD, CO, and CH+, most of them detected for the first time towards a PDR. Their spatial distribution resolves the H and He ionisation structure in the Huygens region, gives insight into the geometry of the Bar, and confirms the large-scale stratification of PDRs. We observe numerous smaller scale structures whose typical size decreases with distance from Ori C and IR lines from CI, if solely arising from radiative recombination and cascade, reveal very high gas temperatures consistent with the hot irradiated surface of small-scale dense clumps deep inside the PDR. The H2 lines reveal multiple, prominent filaments which exhibit different characteristics. This leaves the impression of a "terraced" transition from the predominantly atomic surface region to the CO-rich molecular zone deeper in. Abstract: The JWST has captured the most detailed and sharpest infrared images ever taken of the inner region of the Orion Nebula, the nearest massive star formation region, and a prototypical highly irradiated dense photo-dissociation region (PDR). We investigate the fundamental interaction of far-ultraviolet photons with molecular clouds. The transitions across the ionization front (IF), dissociation front (DF), and the molecular cloud are studied at high-angular resolution. These transitions are relevant to understanding the effects of radiative feedback from massive stars and the dominant physical and chemical processes that lead to the IR emission that JWST will detect in many Galactic and extragalactic environments. Due to the proximity of the Orion Nebula and the unprecedented angular resolution of JWST, these data reveal that the molecular cloud borders are hyper structured at small angular scales of 0.1-1" (0.0002-0.002 pc or 40-400 au at 414 pc). A diverse set of features are observed such as ridges, waves, globules and photoevaporated protoplanetary disks. At the PDR atomic to molecular transition, several bright features are detected that are associated with the highly irradiated surroundings of the dense molecular condensations and embedded young star. Toward the Orion Bar PDR, a highly sculpted interface is detected with sharp edges and density increases near the IF and DF. This was predicted by previous modeling studies, but the fronts were unresolved in most tracers. A complex, structured, and folded DF surface was traced by the H2 lines. This dataset was used to revisit the commonly adopted 2D PDR structure of the Orion Bar. JWST provides us with a complete view of the PDR, all the way from the PDR edge to the substructured dense region, and this allowed us to determine, in detail, where the emission of the atomic and molecular lines, aromatic bands, and dust originate.

Abstract: (Abridged) Mid-infrared observations of photodissociation regions (PDRs) are dominated by strong emission features called aromatic infrared bands (AIBs). The most prominent AIBs are found at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.2 $\mu$m. The most sensitive, highest-resolution infrared spectral imaging data ever taken of the prototypical PDR, the Orion Bar, have been captured by JWST. We provide an inventory of the AIBs found in the Orion Bar, along with mid-IR template spectra from five distinct regions in the Bar: the molecular PDR, the atomic PDR, and the HII region. We use JWST NIRSpec IFU and MIRI MRS observations of the Orion Bar from the JWST Early Release Science Program, PDRs4All (ID: 1288). We extract five template spectra to represent the morphology and environment of the Orion Bar PDR. The superb sensitivity and the spectral and spatial resolution of these JWST observations reveal many details of the AIB emission and enable an improved characterization of their detailed profile shapes and sub-components. While the spectra are dominated by the well-known AIBs at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.2, and 12.7 $\mu$m, a wealth of weaker features and sub-components are present. We report trends in the widths and relative strengths of AIBs across the five template spectra. These trends yield valuable insight into the photochemical evolution of PAHs, such as the evolution responsible for the shift of 11.2 $\mu$m AIB emission from class B$_{11.2}$ in the molecular PDR to class A$_{11.2}$ in the PDR surface layers. This photochemical evolution is driven by the increased importance of FUV processing in the PDR surface layers, resulting in a "weeding out" of the weakest links of the PAH family in these layers. Abstract: The detectors in the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) are arsenic-21 doped silicon impurity band conduction (Si:As IBC) devices and are direct descendants of the Spitzer IRAC22 long wavelength arrays (channels 3 and 4). With appropriate data processing, they can provide excellent per-23 formance. In this paper we discuss the various non-ideal behaviors of these detectors that need to be addressed24 to realize their potential. We have developed a set of algorithms toward this goal, building on experience with25 previous similar detector arrays. The MIRI-specific stage 1 pipeline algorithms, of a three stage JWST cali-26 bration pipeline, were developed using pre-flight tests on the flight detectors and flight spares and have been27 refined using flight data. This paper describes these algorithms, which are included in the first stage of the28 JWST Calibration Pipeline for the MIRI instrument.

19. Results of two cross-sectional database analyses regarding nap-induced modulations of tinnitus

Abstract: Abstract The influence of naps on tinnitus was systematically assessed by exploring the frequency, clinical and demographic characteristics of this phenomenon. 9,724 data from two different tinnitus databases (Tinnitus Hub: n = 6115; Tinnitus Research Initiative (TRI): n = 3627) were included. After separate analysis of the databases, these results were then compared with each other. In the Tinnitus Hub survey database, a total of 31.1% reported an influence on tinnitus by taking a nap (26.9% in the TRI database), with much more frequent worsening after a nap than improvement (23.0% a little or a lot worse; TRI: 17.7% worse; 8.1% a little or a lot better; TRI: 9.2% better). The influence of napping on tinnitus was associated in both databases with other clinical features, such as the dependence of tinnitus on night quality, stress and somatosensory maneuvers. The present study confirms the clinical observation that more tinnitus sufferers report worsening after a nap than tinnitus sufferers reporting an improvement. It was consistently shown that tinnitus sufferers reporting nap-induced modulation of tinnitus also report more frequently an influence of night sleep on their tinnitus. Further clinical and polysomnographic research is warranted to better understand the interaction between sleep and tinnitus.

Abstract: (Abridged) H2 is the most abundant molecule in the Universe. Thanks to its widely spaced energy levels, it predominantly lights up in warm gas, T > 100 K, such as shocked regions, and it is one of the key targets of JWST observations. These include shocks from protostellar outflows, all the way up to starburst galaxies and AGN. Shock models are able to simulate H2 emission. We aim to explore H2 excitation using such models, and to test over which parameter space distinct signatures are produced in H2 emission. We present simulated H2 emission using the Paris-Durham shock code over an extensive grid of 14,000 plane-parallel stationary shock models, a large subset of which are exposed to an external UV radiation field. The grid samples 6 input parameters: preshock density, shock velocity, transverse magnetic field strength, UV radiation field strength, cosmic-ray-ionization rate, and PAH abundance. Physical quantities, such as temperature, density, and width, have been extracted along with H2 integrated line intensities. The strength of the transverse magnetic field, set by the scaling factor, b, plays a key role in the excitation of H2. At low values of b (<~ 0.3, J-type shocks), H2 excitation is dominated by vibrationally excited lines; at higher values (b >~ 1, C-type shocks), rotational lines dominate the spectrum for shocks with an external radiation field comparable to (or lower than) the solar neighborhood. Shocks with b >= 1 can be spatially resolved with JWST for nearby objects. When the input kinetic energy flux increases, the excitation and integrated intensity of H2 increases similarly. An external UV field mainly serves to increase the excitation, particularly for shocks where the input radiation energy is comparable to the input kinetic energy flux. Abstract: The Medium-Resolution integral field Spectrometer (MRS) of MIRI on board JWST performs spectroscopy between 5 and 28~$\mu$m. The optics of the MRS introduce substantial distortion, and this needs to be rectified in order to reconstruct the observed astrophysical scene. We use data from the JWST/MIRI commissioning and cycle 1 calibration phase, to derive the MRS geometric distortion and astrometric solution, a critical step in the calibration of MRS data. These solutions come in the form of transform matrices that map the detector pixels to spatial coordinates of a local MRS coordinate system called $\alpha$/$\beta$, to the global JWST observatory coordinates V2/V3. For every MRS spectral band and each slice dispersed on the detector, the transform of detector pixels to $\alpha$/$\beta$ is fit by a two-dimensional polynomial, using a raster of point source observations. A polynomial transform is used to map the coordinates from $\alpha$/$\beta$ to V2/V3. We calibrated the distortion of all 198 discrete slices of the MIRI/MRS IFUs, and derived an updated Field of View (FoV) for each MRS spectral band. The precision of the distortion solution is estimated to be better than one tenth of a spatial resolution element, with a root mean square (rms) of 10 milli-arcsecond (mas) at 5 $\mu$m, to 23 mas at 27 $\mu$m. Finally we find that the wheel positioning repeatability causes an additional astrometric error of rms 30 mas. We have demonstrated the MRS astrometric calibration strategy and analysis enabling the calibration of MRS spectra, a critical step in the data pipeline especially for science with spatially resolved objects. The distortion calibration was folded into the JWST pipeline in Calibration Reference Data System (CRDS) context jwst\_1094.pmap. Abstract: Many approaches to draping individual garments on human body models are realistic, fast, and yield outputs that are differentiable with respect to the body shape on which they are draped. However, they are either unable to handle multi-layered clothing, which is prevalent in everyday dress, or restricted to bodies in T-pose. In this paper, we introduce a parametric garment representation model that addresses these limitations. As in models used by clothing designers, each garment consists of individual 2D panels. Their 2D shape is defined by a Signed Distance Function and 3D shape by a 2D to 3D mapping. The 2D parameterization enables easy detection of potential collisions and the 3D parameterization handles complex shapes effectively. We show that this combination is faster and yields higher quality reconstructions than purely implicit surface representations, and makes the recovery of layered garments from images possible thanks to its differentiability. Abstract: The intracluster medium (ICM) in the centers of galaxy clusters is heavily influenced by the ``feedback'' from supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Feedback can drive turbulence in the ICM and turbulent dissipation can potentially be an important source of heating. Due to the limited spatial and spectral resolutions of X-ray telescopes, direct observations of turbulence in the hot ICM have been challenging. Recently, we developed a new method to measure turbulence in the ICM using multiphase filaments as tracers. These filaments are ubiquitous in cluster centers and can be observed at very high resolution using optical and radio telescopes. We study the kinematics of the filaments by measuring their velocity structure functions (VSFs) over a wide range of scales in the centers of $\sim 10$ galaxy clusters. We find features of the VSFs that correlate with the SMBHs activities, suggesting that SMBHs are the main driver of gas motions in the centers of galaxy clusters. In all systems, the VSF is steeper than the classical Kolmogorov expectation and the slopes vary from system to system. One theoretical explanation is that the VSFs we have measured so far mostly reflect the motion of the driver (jets and bubbles) rather than the cascade of turbulence. We show that in Abell 1795, the VSF of the outer filaments far from the SMBH flattens on small scales to a Kolmogorov slope, suggesting that the cascade is only detectable farther out with the current telescope resolution. The level of turbulent heating computed at small scales is typically an order of magnitude lower than that estimated at the driving scale. Abstract: Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. Abstract: The growth of galaxies in the early Universe is driven by accretion of circum- and inter-galactic gas. Simulations predict that steady streams of cold gas penetrate the dark matter halos of galaxies, providing the raw material necessary to sustain star formation. We report a filamentary stream of gas that extends for 100 kiloparsecs and connects to the massive radio galaxy 4C 41.17. The stream is detected using sub-millimeter observations of the [CI] line of atomic carbon, a tracer of neutral atomic or molecular hydrogen gas. The galaxy contains a central gas reservoir that is fueling a vigorous starburst. 34. Young Radio Sources Expanding in Gas-Rich ISM: Using Cold Molecular Gas to Trace Their Impact

Abstract: We present the results from the study of the resolved distribution of cold molecular gas around eight young (<10^6 yr), peaked-spectrum radio galaxies. This has allowed us to trace the interplay between the radio jets and the surrounding medium. For three of these sources we present new CO(1-0) observations, obtained with NOEMA. In two targets, we also detected CN lines, both in emission and absorption. Combining the new observations with already published data, we discuss the main results obtained. Although we found that a large fraction of the cold molecular gas is distributed in disc-like rotating structures, in most of the sources high turbulence and deviations from purely quiescent gas (including outflows) were observed in the region co-spatial with the radio continuum emission. This suggests the presence of an interaction between radio plasma and cold molecular gas. We found that newly born and young radio jets, even those with low power i.e., P_jet<10^45 erg/s), can drive massive outflows of cold, molecular gas. The outflows are, however, limited to the sub-kpc regions and likely short lived. On larger scales (a few kpc), we observed cases where the molecular gas appears to avoid the radio lobes and, instead, wraps around them. The results suggest the presence of an evolutionary sequence, consistent with simulations, where the type of impact of the radio plasma changes as the jet expands, going from a direct jet-cloud interaction on sub-kpc scales to a gentler pushing aside of the gas, increasing its turbulence and likely limiting its cooling. This effect can be mediated by the cocoon of shocked gas inflated by the jet-cloud interactions. 35. Combined Effects of Moderate Hypoxia and Sleep Restriction on Mental Workload

Abstract: Aircraft pilots face a high mental workload (MW) under environmental constraints induced by high altitude and sometimes sleep restriction (SR). Our aim was to assess the combined effects of hypoxia and sleep restriction on cognitive and physiological responses to different MW levels using the Multi-Attribute Test Battery (MATB)-II with an additional auditory Oddball-like task. Seventeen healthy subjects were subjected in random order to three 12-min periods of increased MW level (low, medium, and high): sleep restriction (SR, 6 h TST), hypoxia (HY, 2 h, FIO2 = 13.6%, ~3500 m vs. normoxia, NO, FIO2 = 21%). Following each MW level, participants completed the NASA-TLX subjective MW scale. Increasing MW decreases performance on the MATB-II Tracking task (p = 0.001, MW difficulty main effect) and increases NASA-TLX (p = 0.001). In the combined HY/SR condition, MATB-II performance was lower, and the NASA-TLX score was higher compared with the NO/HS condition, while no effect of hypoxia alone was observed. In the accuracy of the auditory task, there is a significant interaction between hypoxia and MW difficulty (F(2–176) = 3.14, p = 0.04), with lower values at high MW under hypoxic conditions. Breathing rate, pupil size, and amplitude of pupil dilation response (PDR) to auditory stimuli are associated with increased MW. These parameters are the best predictors of increased MW, independently of physiological constraints. Adding ECG, SpO2, or electrodermal conductance does not improve model performance. In conclusion, hypoxia and sleep restriction have an additive effect on MW. Physiological and electrophysiological responses must be taken into account when designing a MW predictive model and cross-validation.

Abstract: During the commissioning of {\em JWST}, the Medium-Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) on the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) observed the planetary nebula SMP LMC 058 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The MRS was designed to provide medium resolution (R = $\lambda$/$\Delta\lambda$) 3D spectroscopy in the whole MIRI range. SMP LMC 058 is the only source observed in {\em JWST} commissioning that is both spatially and spectrally unresolved by the MRS and is a good test of {\em JWST's} capabilities. The new MRS spectra reveal a wealth of emission lines not previously detected in this planetary nebula. From these lines, the spectral resolving power ($\lambda$/$\Delta\lambda$) of the MRS is confirmed to be in the range R $=$ 4000 to 1500, depending on the MRS spectral sub-band. In addition, the spectra confirm that the carbon-rich dust emission is from SiC grains and that there is little to no time evolution of the SiC dust and emission line strengths over a 17-year epoch. 37. Multi-phase gas interactions on subarcsec scales in the shocked IGM of Stephan's Quintet with JWST and ALMA

Abstract: We combine JWST and HST imaging with ALMA~CO(2-1) spectroscopy to study the highly turbulent multi-phase intergalactic medium (IGM) in Stephan's Quintet on 25-150 pc scales. Previous Spitzer observations revealed luminous H$_2$ line cooling across a 45 kpc-long filament, created by a giant shock-wave, following the collision with an intruder galaxy NGC~7318b. We demonstrate that the MIRI/F1000W/F770W filters are dominated by 0-0~S(3)~H$_2$ and a combination of PAH and 0-0~S(5)~H$_2$ emission. They reveal the dissipation of kinetic energy as massive clouds experience collisions, interactions and likely destruction/re-cycling within different phases of the IGM. In one kpc-scaled structure, warm H$_2$ formed a triangular-shaped head and tail of compressed and stripped gas behind a narrow shell of cold H$_2$. In another region, two cold molecular clumps with very different velocities are connected by an arrow-shaped stream of warm, probably shocked, H$_2$ suggesting a cloud-cloud collision is occurring. In both regions, a high warm-to-cold molecular gas fraction indicates that the cold clouds are being disrupted and converted into warm gas. We also map gas associated with an apparently forming dwarf galaxy. We suggest that the primary mechanism for exciting strong mid-IR H$_2$ lines throughout Stephan's Quintet is through a fog of warm gas created by the shattering of denser cold molecular clouds and mixing/recycling in the post-shocked gas. A full picture of the diverse kinematics and excitation of the warm H$_2$ will require future JWST mid-IR spectroscopy. 38. DrapeNet: Garment Generation and Self-Supervised Draping

Abstract: Recent approaches to drape garments quickly over arbitrary human bodies leverage self-supervision to eliminate the need for large training sets. However, they are designed to train one network per clothing item, which severely limits their generalization abilities. In our work, we rely on self-supervision to train a single network to drape multiple garments. This is achieved by predicting a 3D deformation field conditioned on the latent codes of a generative network, which models garments as unsigned distance fields. Our pipeline can generate and drape previously unseen garments of any topology, whose shape can be edited by manipulating their latent codes. Being fully differentiable, our formulation makes it possible to recover accurate 3D models of garments from partial observations -- images or 3D scans -- via gradient descent. Abstract: Simulating realistic sensors is a challenging part in data generation for autonomous systems, often involving carefully handcrafted sensor design, scene properties, and physics modeling. To alleviate this, we introduce a pipeline for data-driven simulation of a realistic LiDAR sensor. We propose a model that learns a mapping between RGB images and corresponding LiDAR features such as raydrop or per-point intensities directly from real datasets. We show that our model can learn to encode realistic effects such as dropped points on transparent surfaces or high intensity returns on reflective materials. When applied to naively raycasted point clouds provided by off-the-shelf simulator software, our model enhances the data by predicting intensities and removing points based on the scene's appearance to match a real LiDAR sensor. We use our technique to learn models of two distinct LiDAR sensors and use them to improve simulated LiDAR data accordingly. Through a sample task of vehicle segmentation, we show that enhancing simulated point clouds with our technique improves downstream task performance., Comment: IROS2022 paper

To address these limitations, we propose an end-to-end differentiable pipeline that represents garments using implicit surfaces and learns a skinning field conditioned on shape and pose parameters of an articulated body model. To limit body-garment interpenetrations and artifacts, we propose an interpenetration-aware pre-processing strategy of training data and a novel training loss that penalizes self-intersections while draping garments. We demonstrate that our method yields more accurate results for garment reconstruction and deformation with respect to state of the art methods. Abstract: During the commissioning of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the mid-infrared instrument (MIRI) observed NGC6552 with the MIRI Imager and the medium-resolution spectrograph (MRS). NGC6552 is an active galactic nucleus (AGN) at redshift 0.0266 classified as a Seyfert 2 nucleus in the optical, and Compton-thick AGN in X-rays. This work exemplifies and demonstrates the MRS capabilities to study the mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectra and characterize the physical conditions and kinematics of the ionized and molecular gas in the nuclear regions of nearby galaxies. We obtained the nuclear, circumnuclear, and central mid-IR spectra of NGC6552. They provide the first clear observational evidence for a nuclear outflow in NGC6552. The outflow contributes to 67$\pm$7% of the total line flux independent of the ionization potential (27 to 187 eV) and critical densities (10$^4$ to 4$\times$10$^{6}$ cm$^{-3}$), showing an average blue-shifted peak velocity of -127$\pm$45 kms$^{-1}$ and an outflow maximal velocity of 698$\pm$80 kms$^{-1}$. Since the mid-IR photons penetrate dusty regions as efficiently as X-ray keV photons, we interpret these results as the evidence for a highly ionized, non-stratified, AGN-powered, and fast outflowing gas in a low density environment (few 10$^{3}$ cm$^{-3}$) located very close (<0.2kpc) to the Compton-thick AGN. Nine pure rotational molecular Hydrogen lines are detected and spectrally resolved, and exhibit symmetric Gaussian profiles, consistent with the galactic rotation, and with no evidence of outflowing H$_{2}$ material. We detect a warm H$_{2}$ mass of $1.9\pm1.1\times10^7 M_{\odot}$ in the central region (1.8 kpc in diameter) of the galaxy, with almost 30% of that mass in the circum-nuclear region. Blood eosinophil count (BEC) represents a biomarker for a pejorative evolution of COPD, including exacerbations and accelerated FEV1 decline. We aimed to analyse the associations between BEC and airway microbiota in COPD at stable state.Patients and Methods: Adult COPD patients at stable state (RINNOPARI cohort) were included and characterised for clinical, functional, biological and morphological features. BEC at inclusion defined 2 groups of patients with low BEC < 300/mm3 and high BEC ≥ 300/mm3. Sputa were collected and an extended microbiological culture was performed for the identification of viable airway microbiota.Results: Fifty-nine subjects were included. When compared with the low BEC (n=40, 67.8%), the high BEC group (n=19, 32.2%) had more frequent exacerbations (p< 0.001) and more pronounced cough and sputum (p< 0.05). The global composition, the number of bacteria per sample and the α-diversity of the microbiota did not differ between groups, as well as the predominant phyla (Firmicutes), or the gender repartition.Conclusion: In our study, high BEC in COPD at stable state was associated with a clinical phenotype including frequent exacerbation, but no distinct profile of viable airway microbiota compared with low BEC.Keywords: COPD, eosinophil, sputum, microbiota

43. Bronchiectasis in renal transplant patients: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: Abstract Background Bronchiectasis is a chronic airway disease characterized by permanent and irreversible abnormal dilatation of bronchi. Several studies have reported the development of bronchiectasis after renal transplantation (RT), but no prospective study specifically assessed bronchiectasis in this population. This study aimed to compare features of patients with bronchiectasis associated with RT to those with idiopathic bronchiectasis. Methods Nineteen patients with bronchiectasis associated with RT (RT-B group) and 23 patients with idiopathic bronchiectasis (IB group) were prospectively included in this monocentric cross-sectional study. All patients underwent clinical, functional, laboratory, and CT scan assessments. Sputum was collected from 25 patients (n = 11 with RT-B and n = 14 with IB) and airway microbiota was analyzed using an extended microbiological culture. Results Dyspnea (≥ 2 on mMRC scale), number of exacerbations, pulmonary function tests, total bronchiectasis score, severity and prognosis scores (FACED and E-FACED), and quality of life scores (SGRQ and MOS SF-36) were similar in the RT-B and IB groups. By contrast, chronic cough was less frequent in the RT-B group than in the IB group (68% vs. 96%, p = 0.03). The prevalence and diversity of the airway microbiota in sputum were similar in the two groups. Conclusion Clinical, functional, thoracic CT scan, and microbiological characteristics of bronchiectasis are overall similar in patients with IB and RT-B. These results highlight that in RT patients, chronic respiratory symptoms and/or airway infections should lead to consider the diagnosis of bronchiectasis. Further studies are required to better characterize the pathophysiology of RT-B including airway microbiota, its incidence, and impact on therapeutic management.

Abstract: This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. In this study, a full experimental design was developed to select the best method (nanoprecipitation and emulsification) and operating conditions (PHBV molecular weight, surfactant concentration, carvacrol/PHBV ratio and Aqueous/Organic phase volume ratios) to encapsulate carvacrol into PHBV. In this purpose, for each tested conditions, encapsulation efficiency (process efficiency, carvacrol recovery, PHBV recovery and loading capacity), as well as nanoparticles’ morphology and size were estimated, and statistically analysed. Carvacrol recovery and loading capacity were significatively highest (61 % and 100 % respectively) using emuslification method, low surfactant concentration, high carvacrol/PHBV ratio (for loading capacity) and low PHBV molecular weight (for carvacrol recovery). To the contrary, PHBV recovery increased (93 %) using the nanoprecipitation method, a high surfactant concentration and a low carvacrol/PHBV ratio, while process efficiency increased (73 %) with a low carvacrol/PHBV ratio and a low aqueous/organic phase volume ratio. Moreover, small spherical-shaped and separated nanoparticles were obtained using emulsification method, high surfactant concentration but low carvacrol/PHBV ratio. Therefore, including all the aspects of carvacrol nanoencapsulation into PHBV (shape and encapsulation efficiency) using emulsification method, with a low level for all parameters except the surfactant concentration are the most suitable strategy.

46. Cosmic rays and thermal instability in self-regulating cooling flows of massive galaxy clusters

Abstract: One of the key physical processes that helps prevent strong cooling flows in galaxy clusters is the continued energy input from the central active galactic nucleus (AGN) of the cluster. However, it remains unclear how this energy is thermalised so that it can effectively prevent global thermal instability. One possible option is that a fraction of the AGN energy is converted into cosmic rays (CRs), which provide non-thermal pressure support, and can retain energy even as thermal energy is radiated away. By means of magneto-hydrodynamical simulations, we investigate how CR injected by the AGN jet influence cooling flows of a massive galaxy cluster. We conclude that converting a fraction of the AGN luminosity as low as 10\% into CR energy prevents cooling flows on timescales of billion years, without significant changes in the structure of the multi-phase intra-cluster medium. CR-dominated jets, by contrast, lead to the formation of an extended, warm central nebula that is supported by CR pressure. We report that the presence of CRs is not able to suppress the onset of thermal instability in massive galaxy clusters, but CR-dominated jets do significantly change the continued evolution of gas as it continues to cool from isobaric to isochoric. The CR redistribution in the cluster is dominated by advection rather than diffusion or streaming, but the heating by CR streaming helps maintain gas in the hot and warm phase. 47. The CO emission in the Taffy Galaxies (UGC 12914/5) at 60pc resolution-I: The battle for star formation in the turbulent Taffy Bridge

Abstract: We present ALMA observations at a spatial resolution of 0.2 arcsec (60 pc) of CO emission from the Taffy galaxies (UGC 12914/5). The observations are compared with narrow-band Pa$\alpha$, mid-IR, radio continuum and X-ray imaging, plus optical spectroscopy. The galaxies have undergone a recent head-on collision, creating a massive gaseous bridge which is known to be highly turbulent. The bridge contains a complex web of narrow molecular filaments and clumps. The majority of the filaments are devoid of star formation, and fall significantly below the Kennicutt-Schmidt relationship for normal galaxies, especially for the numerous regions undetected in Pa$\alpha$ emission. Within the loosely connected filaments and clumps of gas we find regions of high velocity dispersion which appear gravitationally unbound for a wide range of likely values of $X_{\rm CO}$. Like the "Firecracker" region in the Antennae system, they would require extremely high external dynamical or thermal pressure to stop them dissipating rapidly on short crossing timescales of 2-5~Myrs. We suggest that the clouds may be transient structures within a highly turbulent multi-phase medium which is strongly suppressing star formation. Despite the overall turbulence in the system, stars seem to have formed in compact hotspots within a kpc-sized extragalactic HII region, where the molecular gas has a lower velocity dispersion than elsewhere, and shows evidence for a collision with an ionized gas cloud. 48. Cold gas removal from the centre of a galaxy by a low-luminosity jet

Abstract: The energy emitted by active galactic nuclei (AGN) may provide a self-regulating process (AGN feedback) that shapes the evolution of galaxies. This is believed to operate along two modes: on galactic scales by clearing the interstellar medium via outflows, and on circumgalactic scales by preventing the cooling and accretion of gas onto the host galaxy. Radio jets associated with radiatively-inefficient AGN are known to contribute to the latter mode of feedback. However, such jets could also play a role on circum-nuclear and galactic scales, blurring the distinction between the two modes. We have discovered a spatially-resolved, massive molecular outflow, carrying $\sim75\%$ of the gas in the central region of the host galaxy of a radiatively-inefficient AGN. The outflow coincides with the radio jet 540 pc offset from the core, unambiguously pointing to the jet as the driver of this phenomenon. The modest luminosity of the radio source ($L\rm_{1.4 GHz}=2.1 \times 10\rm^{23}~\rm W~\rm Hz^{-1}$) confirms predictions of simulations that jets of low-luminosity radio sources carry enough power to drive such outflows. Including kpc-scale feedback from such sources -- comprising of the majority of the radio AGN population -- in cosmological simulations may assist in resolving some of their limitations., Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures. 49. Fish as a Deformable Solid: An Innovative Method to Characterize Fish Swimming Behavior on Acoustic Videos

Abstract: Acoustic cameras are increasingly used for continuous, non-intrusive recording and counting of fish passage in natural environments and artificial structures such as fishways. However, analysing the large number of videos recorded is time consuming. Although automatic reading processes have been developed, the poor quality of acoustic images, including discontinuity of the signal for a single object, is challenging. We developed an innovative method for analysing acoustic videos. Unlike previous methods, it focuses on swimming locomotion instead of the morphological properties of fish. Each image of a fish is pre-processed to remove discontinuities and restore the entire fish body as a single cluster of pixels. The set of pixels is then tracked to retrieve movement, independent of the displacement of the fish, using a mesh and a solid deformable model. The deformation to which the mesh is subjected between each pair of frames (i.e., deformation of the fish body) is summarised in a deformation map for each fish passage. Testing the method using a dataset of four species strongly suggested that deformation maps are species-dependent. These results must be extended to other species to confirm the effectiveness of the method for automatic identification of fish species and characterisation of their behaviour using acoustic camera records.

50. Gas condensation in Brightest Group Galaxies unveiled with MUSE

Abstract: The origin of the cold gas in central galaxies in groups is still a matter of debate. We present Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations of 18 optically selected local Brightest Group Galaxies (BGGs) to study the kinematics and distribution of the optical emission-line gas. MUSE observations reveal a distribution of gas morphologies including ten complex networks of filaments extending up to 10 kpc to two compact (<3 kpc) and five extended (>5 kpc) disk-dominated structures. Some rotating disks show rings and elongated structures arising from the central disk. The kinematics of the stellar component is mainly rotation-dominated, which is very different from the disturbed kinematics and distribution found in the filamentary sources. The ionized gas is kinematically decoupled from the stellar component for most systems, suggesting an external origin for the gas. We also find that the Halpha luminosity correlates with the cold molecular mass. By exploring the thermodynamical properties of the hot atmospheres, we find that the filamentary sources and compact disks are found in systems with small central entropy values and tcool/teddy ratios. This suggests that, like for Brightest Cluster Galaxies in cool core clusters, the ionized gas are likely formed from hot halo gas condensations, consistently with the Chaotic Cold Accretion simulations (as shown via the C-ratio, Tat, and k-plot). We note that gaseous rotating disks are more frequent than in BCGs. An explanation for the origin of the gas in those objects is a contribution to gas fueling by mergers or group satellites, as qualitatively hinted by some sources of the present sample. Nonetheless, we discuss the possibility that some extended disks could also be a transition stage in an evolutionary sequence including filaments, extended disks and compact disks, as described by hot gas condensation models of cooling flows., Comment: 38 pages, and 16 figures.
