1. High pressure-temperature phase diagram of ammonia hemihydrate

Abstract

We report a comprehensive experimental investigation of the phase diagram of ammonia hemihydrate (AHH) in the range of 2-30 GPa and 300-700 K, based on Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction experiments and visual observations. Four solid phases, denoted AHH-II, DIMA, pbcc and qbcc, are present in this domain, one of which, AHH-qbcc was discovered in this work. We show that, unlike previously thought, the body-centered cubic (bcc) phase obtained on heating AHH-II below 10 GPa, denoted here as AHH-pbcc, is distinct from the DIMA phase, although both present the same bcc structure and O/N positional disorder. Our results actually indicates that AHH-pbcc is a plastic form of DIMA, characterized by free molecular rotations. AHH-qbcc is observed in the intermediate P-T range between AHH-II and DIMA. It presents a complex x-ray pattern reminiscent of the "quasi-bcc" structures that have been theoretically predicted, although none of these structures is consistent with our data. The transition lines between all solid phases as well as the melting curve have been mapped in detail, showing that: (1) the new qbcc phase is the stable one in the intermediate P-T range 10-19 GPa, 300-450 K, although the II-qbcc transition is kinetically hindered for T < 450 K, and II directly transits to DIMA in a gradual fashion from 25 to 35 GPa at 300 K. (2) The stability domain of qbcc shrinks above 450 K and eventually terminates at a pbcc-qbcc-DIMA triple point at 21.5 GPa-630 K. (3) A direct and reversible transition occurs between AHH-pbcc and DIMA above 630 K. (4) The pbcc solid stability domain extends up to the melting line above 3 GPa, and a II-pbcc-liquid triple point is identified at 3 GPa-320 K., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figurs

Abstract

The olivine-wadsleyite transformation is believed to occur at depths of about 410 km in the Earth, producing a major seismic discontinuity in this region of the Earth’s mantle. The mechanism of this phase transition controls the microstructures of the newly nucleated wadsleyite, the major phase of the upper part of the mantle transition zone, and thus impacts seismic observations in the region. Here, we study the microstructures produced by the olivine-wadsleyite transformation using in situ laboratory experiments at pressures and temperatures relevant for the mantle transition zone. We transform pure olivine samples in laser-heated diamond-anvil cells at pressures ranging from 12.3 to 20.2 GPa and temperatures of 1400–1730 K. At different steps of the transformation we measure the orientation and size distribution of individual sample grains using multigrain crystallography at synchrotron radiation sources. We find that the olivine to wadsleyite transformation is incoherent at the conditions of the mantle transition zone, and is probably dominated by nucleation of wadsleyite at grain boundaries of the parent olivine. Thus, we expect that seismic anisotropy near 410 km would drop significantly due to the randomized lattice preferred orientation of newly nucleated wadsleyite induced by the incoherent transformation.

Abstract

X-ray computed microtomography (XCT) has been a very promising and exciting technique for high pressure (HP) science since the introduction of the first HP setups optimized for tomography in the mid-2000s. Different experimental stations are now available using diamond anvil cells (DACs) or large volume presses, with their own benefits and limitations: access to very high pressures but at room temperature on one hand, high temperature (HT) at moderate pressures on the other, and slow acquisitions being an undesired common point between all techniques. We believe that we are at a turning point where current and future developments boost the interest of the technique for the HP community. Time-resolved experiments, with less than 1 s per tomogram, will become routinely available. Fast tomography will greatly reduce the problem of motion artifacts at HT, allowing new topics to be explored. Computing and data treatment issues must be taken into account to effectively exploit the large volumes of data produced. Foreseeable developments will allow higher pressures to be reached in larger volume presses and higher T in DACs. Furthermore, improved XCT resolution in large samples (several hundreds of μm in diameter) recorded in situ will offer to be an effective alternative to ex situ microscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chromium dioxide (CrO2) is synthesized by direct combustion process between Cr and O2 in a diamond anvil cell at 14 GPa using laser heating. It is concluded that X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy studies evidenced a structural phase transition in CrO2 from rutile-type to CaCl2-type at about 17GPa.

Reaction chemistry & engineering 4, 1691–1870 (2019). doi:10.1039/C9RE00191C, Detailed analysis of reaction mechanisms by in situ techniques are important for detecting metastable intermediates, analysing polymorphic transitions and thereby for the discovery of new compounds. This article presents the first combination of serial crystallography with in situ luminescence and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements to monitor the synthesis of [Eu(phen)2(NO3)3] (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). In a batch reaction, it is found that this complex is polymorphic, crystallizing into two distinct monoclinic structures. We track the evolution of the synthesis conditions for these phases using in situ XRD combined with real time measurements of pH value, ion conductivity, infrared (IR) spectroscopy and in situ luminescence analysis of coordination sensors (ILACS). However, in a flow reactor a different combination of phases is produced. A serial crystallography experiment utilizing a nanofocused synchrotron X-ray beam to identify individual crystallites reveals the simultaneous formation of the two phases, as well as, a third unknown phase. Abstract

International audience; The occurrence of carbonate-rich mantle rocks and diamonds in kimberlite rocks provide evidence for the presence of CO2 in the mantle. Carbon is recycled into the mantle via subduction and released through volcanic outgassing. An important fraction is retained at depth where partial melting of subducted lithologies produce alkali-rich carbonates along the CaCO3-MgCO3-K2CO3 join that infiltrate the mantle wedge [1]. Although volumetrically minor, these melts act as effective metasomatic agents that are related to source regions for diamond-bearing kimberlites [2]. The mobility of carbon at depth is controlled by the physical properties of carbonate liquids that remain largely unknown [3,4]. Here we report in-situ density measurements of alkaline carbonates at crustal and upper mantle conditions using synchrotron X-ray absorption in a Paris-Edinburgh press at beamline Psiché (Synchrotron Soleil). Experiments were conducted in several compositions along the CaCO3-K2CO3 and MgCO3-K2CO3 join up to 1400 K and 3 GPa. The starting materials included a mixture of synthetic K2CO3 and natural calcite and K2Mg(CO3)2 glasses synthesized at 0.15 GPa and 1098 K in an internally heated pressure vessel. The samples were cold pressurized and heated until the molten stage was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The results were fitted to derive the first robust model for the density of alkali carbonates that mimic liquids from the incipient melting of subducted lithologies at crustal and upper mantle conditions. Abstract

X-rays spectroscopy experiments at synchrotron facilities were limited during many years by the maximum count-throughput rate and the peak-to-background ratio of detectors, and their associated data acquisition systems. In the recent years, some new detectors became available with optimized front-end electronics, and a new generation of digital pulse processing electronics is now available (FalconX, Xspress3). An overview of the tests performed in laboratory and on beam-line at the SOLEIL synchrotron, with the Vortex Silicon Drift Detector and with Canberra High Purity Germanium detectors, associated with different digital electronic modules, is reported. A summary of energy resolution performance is also presented. It is shown that the dynamic performance can be described by not only the measurement time, but also by the pulse-pair resolution, defining the likelihood to register piled-up pulses, hence degrading the quality of the spectrum. Abstract

Small gap wigglers become more and more attractive to produce high photon fluxes in the hard X-ray photon range. They use magnet blocks of high magnetization which resists much better to heating (baking, synchrotron radiation) than in the past, produce high magnetic field with numerous periods and are very compact. They also are a very good alternative to superconducting technology which requires special infrastructure, heavy maintenance and is not running cost free. SOLEIL, operating presently at 2.75 GeV has designed and built an in-vacuum wiggler of 38 periods of 50 mm producing 2.1 T at a minimum gap of 5.5 mm to delivered photon beam between 20 keV and 50 keV. Already in operation, further improvements are presently in progress to push photons towards higher energy, in particular thanks to the operation at lower gap (4.5 mm). MAX IV and SOLEIL, in the frame of collaboration, ave built an upgraded version of the existing SOLEIL wiggler with the target to extend the spectral range at high energy (above 50 keV) but also at low energy (4 keV) with the same insertion device. The design of the existing magnetic system has been modified to reach 2.4 T at a minimum gap of 4.2 mm and includes taper operation to avoid undulator structure in the radiated spectrum at low energy. Abstract

Here we present the instrumental development to extend the synchrotron X-ray microtomography techniques to in situ studies under static compression (HP) or shear stress or the both conditions at high temperatures (HT). To achieve this, a new rotating tomography Paris-Edinburgh cell (rotoPEc) has been developed. Abstract

International audience; We performed compression curves of aluminous silicate perovskite (Al–Pv) synthesized under various conditions of pressure, temperature and MgO or SiO2 activities, using laser-heated diamond anvil cell at the ESRF (Grenoble). We refined bulk moduli (K0) from 235 to 270 GPa, in agreement with the wide range of values reported in the literature. We observe that Al–Pv phase synthesized at high temperature, in the SiO2-rich system, is more compressible than Al–Pv phase synthesized at high pressure, in the MgO-rich system. As suggested by various authors, the resolution of this controversy rests on a better understanding of the crystal chemistry of Al in perovskite, which involves at least two competitive mechanisms, substitution of Si in the octahedral site only, or a coupled substitution on both Mg and Si sites. The vacancy mechanism is expected to reduce the K0 significantly, due to the presence of oxygen vacancies. All compression curves performed in this study can be explained by considering that the vacancy mechanism is favored at high temperatures and that the coupled mechanism is favored at high pressures. These trends agree well with previous reports. For (Mg,Fe)(Si,Al)O3 perovskite compositions relevant to the lower mantle, the two previous reports and our new data set for a MORB-type perovskite phase agree well with each other with higher K0 values between 260 and 270 GPa, compared with K0 = 253 GPa for the pure MgSiO3 phase suggested from previous studies. In these compounds, coupled substitution of Al3+ and Fe3+ cations leads to a well constrained crystal chemistry. Therefore, the low K0 value observed in some of the previous studies for Fe-free Al–Pv is likely to be irrelevant for mantle perovskite. Some questions may remain only for the mantle region just below the 670 km discontinuity, where pressures remain moderate, thus potentially allowing for at most 2% of oxygen vacancies. However, it is clear that using low K0 values to extrapolate to greater depths is unjustified.

Abstract

X-ray tomography is a non-destructive three-dimensional imaging/microanalysis technique selective to a wide range of properties such as density, chemical composition, chemical states and crystallographic structure with extremely high sensitivity and spatial resolution. Here the development of in situ high-pressure high-temperature micro-tomography using a rotating module for the Paris-Edinburgh cell combined with synchrotron radiation is described. By rotating the sample chamber by 360°, the limited angular aperture of ordinary high-pressure cells is surmounted. Such a non-destructive high-resolution probe provides three-dimensional insight on the morphological and structural evolution of crystalline as well as amorphous phases during high pressure and temperature treatment. To demonstrate the potentials of this new experimental technique the compression behavior of a basalt glass is investigated by X-ray absorption tomography, and diffraction/scattering tomography imaging of the structural changes during the polymerization of C60 molecules under pressure is performed. Small size and weight of the loading frame and rotating module means that this apparatus is portable, and can be readily installed on most synchrotron facilities to take advantage of the diversity of three-dimensional imaging techniques available at beamlines. This experimental breakthrough should open new ways for in situ imaging of materials under extreme pressure-temperature-stress conditions, impacting diverse areas in physics, chemistry, geology or materials sciences. Abstract

The high-pressure melting behavior of different iron alloys was investigated using the classical synchrotron-based in situ X-ray diffraction techniques. As they offer specific advantages and disadvantages, both energy-dispersive (EDX) and angle-dispersive (ADX) X-ray diffraction methods were performed at the BL04B1 beamline of SPring8 (Japan) and at the ID27-30 beamline of the ESRF (France), respectively. High-pressure vessels and pressure ranges investigated include the Paris- Edinburgh press from 2 to 17GPa, the SPEED-1500 multi-anvil press from 10 to 27 GPa, and the laser-heated diamond anvil cell from 15 to 60 GPa. The onset of melting (at the solidus or eutectic temperature) can be easily detected using EDX because the grains start to rotate relative to the X-ray beam, which provokes rapid and drastic changes with time of the peak growth rate. Then, the degree of melting can be determined, using both EDX and ADX, from the intensity of diffuse X-ray scattering characteristic of the liquid phase. This diffuse contribution can be easily differentiated from the Compton diffusion of the pressure medium because they have different shapes in the diffraction patterns. Information about the composition and/or about the structure of the liquid phase can then be extracted from the shape of the diffuse X-ray scattering.
