We present results of explicit asymptotic approximations applied to neutrino--electron scattering in a representative model of neutrino population evolution under conditions characteristic of core-collapse supernova explosions or binary neutron star mergers. It is shown that this approach provides stable solutions of these stiff systems of equations, with accuracy and timestepping comparable to that for standard implicit treatments such as backward Euler, fixed point iteration, and Anderson-accelerated fixed point iteration. Because each timestep can be computed more rapidly with the explicit asymptotic approximation than with implicit methods, this suggests that algebraically stabilized explicit integration methods could be used to compute neutrino evolution coupled to hydrodynamics more efficiently in stellar explosions and mergers than the methods currently in use.

We review the physics of monolayer graphene in a strong magnetic field, with emphasis on highly collective states that emerge from the weakly interacting system because of correlations (emergent states). After reviewing the general properties of graphene and of electrons in a magnetic field, we give a brief introduction to the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) and the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in a 2D electron gas as foundation to show that monolayer graphene in a magnetic field exhibits both effects, but with properties modified by the influence of the graphene crystal. After giving an introduction to standard methods of dealing with emergent states for this system, we show that an SO(8) fermion dynamical symmetry governs the emergent degrees of freedom and that the algebraic and group properties of the dynamical symmetry provide a new view of strongly correlated states observed in monolayer graphene subject to a strong magnetic field.

Two principles govern the critical temperature for superconducting transitions: (1)~intrinsic strength of the pair coupling and (2)~effect of the many-body environment on the efficiency of that coupling. Most discussions take into account only the first but we argue that the properties of unconventional superconductors are governed more often by the second, through dynamical symmetry relating normal and superconducting states. Differentiating these effects is essential to charting a path to the highest-temperature superconductors.

We review application of the SU(4) model of strongly-correlated electrons to cuprate and iron-based superconductors. A minimal self-consistent generalization of BCS theory to incorporate antiferromagnetism on an equal footing with pairing and strong Coulomb repulsion is found to account systematically for the major features of high-temperature superconductivity, with microscopic details of the parent compounds entering only parametrically. This provides a systematic procedure to separate essential from peripheral, suggesting that many features exhibited by the high-$T\tsub c$ data set are of interest in their own right but are not central to the superconducting mechanism. More generally, we propose that the surprisingly broad range of conventional and unconventional superconducting and superfluid behavior observed across many fields of physics results from the systematic appearance of similar algebraic structures for the emergent effective Hamiltonians, even though the microscopic Hamiltonians of the corresponding parent states may differ radically from each other., Comment: 62 pages, 56 figures, accepted for publication Frontiers of Physics

A comprehensive introduction to the theory of the solar neutrino problem is given that is aimed at instructors who are not experts in quantum field theory but would like to incorporate these ideas into instruction of advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate students in courses like astrophysics or quantum mechanics, it is also aimed at the inquisitive student who would like to learn this topic on their own. The presentation assumes as theoretical preparation only that the reader is familiar with the basics of quantum mechanics in Dirac notation and elementary differential equations and matrices.

Quantum phase transitions are sudden changes in the ground-state wavefunction of a many-body system that can occur as a control parameter such as a concentration or a field strength is varied. They are driven purely by the competition between quantum fluctuations and mutual interactions among constituents of the system, not by thermal fluctuations; hence they can occur even at zero temperature. Examples of quantum phase transitions in many-body physics may be found in systems ranging from high-temperature superconductors to topological insulators. A quantum phase transition usually can be characterized by nonanalyticity/discontinuity in certain order parameters or divergence of the ground state energy eigenvalue and/or its derivatives with respect to certain physical quantities. Here in a circular one-dimensional spin model with Heisenberg XY interaction and no magnetic field, we observe critical phenomena for the $n_0=1/N\rightarrow0$ Mott insulator caused by a qualitative change of the boundary condition. We demonstrate in the vicinity of the transition point a sudden change in ground-state properties accompanied by an avoided level-crossing between the ground and the first excited states. Notably, our result links conventional quantum phase transitions to microscopic boundary conditions, with significant implications for quantum information, quantum control, and quantum computing.

A formalism is presented for treating strongly-correlated graphene quantum Hall states in terms of an SO(8) fermion dynamical symmetry that includes pairing as well as particle--hole generators. The graphene SO(8) algebra is isomorphic to an SO(8) algebra that has found broad application in nuclear physics, albeit with physically very different generators, and exhibits a strong formal similarity to SU(4) symmetries that have been proposed to describe high-temperature superconductors. The well-known SU(4) symmetry of quantum Hall ferromagnetism for single-layer graphene is recovered as one subgroup of SO(8), but the dynamical symmetry structure associated with the full set of SO(8) subgroup chains extends quantum Hall ferromagnetism and allows analytical many-body solutions for a rich set of collective states exhibiting spontaneously-broken symmetry that may be important for the low-energy physics of graphene in strong magnetic fields. The SO(8) symmetry permits a natural definition of generalized coherent states that correspond to symmetry-constrained Hartree--Fock--Bogoliubov solutions, or equivalently a microscopically-derived Ginzburg--Landau formalism, exhibiting the interplay between competing spontaneously broken symmetries in determining the ground state.

We propose an analog quantum simulator that uses ion traps to realize the many-body electron-electron Coulomb interaction of an electron gas. This proposal maps a system that is difficult to solve and control to an experimentally-feasible setup that can be realized with current technologies. Using a dilatation transform, we show that ion traps can efficiently simulate electronic Coulomb interactions. No complexity overhead is added if only the energy spectrum is desired, and only a simple unitary transform is needed on the initial state otherwise. The runtime of the simulation is found to be much shorter than the timescale of the corresponding electronic system, minimizing susceptibility of the proposed quantum simulator to external noise and decoherence. This proposal works in any number of dimensions, and could be used to simulate different topological phases of electrons in graphene-like structures, by using ions trapped in honeycomb lattices.

Superconductivity (SC) or superfluidity (SF) is observed across a remarkably broad range of fermionic systems: in BCS, cuprate, iron-based, organic, and heavy-fermion superconductors, and superfluid helium-3 in condensed matter; in a variety of SC/SF phenomena in low-energy nuclear physics; in ultracold, trapped atomic gases; and in various exotic possibilities in neutron stars. The range of physical conditions and differences in microscopic physics defy all attempts to unify this behavior in any conventional picture. Here we propose a unification through the shared symmetry properties of the emergent condensed states, with microscopic differences absorbed into parameters. This, in turn, forces a rethinking of specific occurrences of SC/SF such as cuprate high-temperature superconductivity, which becomes far less mysterious when seen as part of a continuum of behavior shared by a variety of other systems.

It has been debated whether the experimentally-identified superdeformed rotational band in $^{40}$Ar [E. Ideguchi, et al., Phys. Lett. B 686 (2010) 18] has an axially or triaxially deformed shape. Projected shell model calculations with angular-momentum-projection using an axially-deformed basis are performed up to high spins. Our calculated energy levels indicate a perfect collective-rotor behavior for the superdeformed yrast band. However, detailed analysis of the wave functions reveals that the high-spin structure is dominated by mixed 0-, 2-, and 4-quasiparticle configurations. The calculated electric quadrupole transition probabilities reproduce well the known experimental data and suggest a reduced, but still significant, collectivity in the high spin region. The deduced triaxial deformation parameters are small throughout the entire band, suggesting that triaxiality is not very important for this superdeformed band.

Graphene SU(4) quantum Hall symmetry is extended to SO(8), permitting analytical solutions for graphene in a magnetic field that break SU(4) spontaneously. We recover standard graphene SU(4) physics as one limit, but find new phases and new properties that may be relevant for understanding the ground state. The graphene SO(8) symmetry is found to be isomorphic to one that occurs extensively in nuclear structure physics, and very similar to one that describes high-temperature superconductors, suggesting deep mathematical connections among these physically-different fermionic systems.

We demonstrate the first implementation of recently-developed fast explicit kinetic integration algorithms on modern graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerators. Taking as a generic test case a Type Ia supernova explosion with an extremely stiff thermonuclear network having 150 isotopic species and 1604 reactions coupled to hydrodynamics using operator splitting, we demonstrate the capability to solve of order 100 realistic kinetic networks in parallel in the same time that standard implicit methods can solve a single such network on a CPU. This orders-of-magnitude decrease in compute time for solving systems of realistic kinetic networks implies that important coupled, multiphysics problems in various scientific and technical fields that were intractible, or could be simulated only with highly schematic kinetic networks, are now computationally feasible., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Journal of Computational Physics

In contrast to the prevailing view in the literature, it is shown that even extremely stiff sets of ordinary differential equations may be solved efficiently by explicit methods if limiting algebraic solutions are used to stabilize the numerical integration. The stabilizing algebra differs essentially for systems well-removed from equilibrium and those near equilibrium. Explicit asymptotic and quasi-steady-state methods that are appropriate when the system is only weakly equilibrated are examined first. These methods are then extended to the case of close approach to equilibrium through a new implementation of partial equilibrium approximations. Using stringent tests with astrophysical thermonuclear networks, evidence is provided that these methods can deal with the stiffest networks, even in the approach to equilibrium, with accuracy and integration timestepping comparable to that of implicit methods. Because explicit methods can execute a timestep faster and scale more favorably with network size than implicit algorithms, our results suggest that algebraically-stabilized explicit methods might enable integration of larger reaction networks coupled to fluid dynamics than has been feasible previously for a variety of disciplines., Comment: Updated references

We propose a unified description of cuprate and iron-based superconductivity. Consistency with magnetic structure inferred from neutron scattering implies significant constraints on the symmetry of the pairing gap for the iron-based superconductors. A model for high-temperature superconductors incorporating antiferromagnetism, d-wave superconductivity, and no double lattice-site occupancy can give energy surfaces exquisitely balanced between antiferromagnetic and superconducting order for specific ranges of doping and temperature. The resulting properties can reconcile a universal cuprate phase diagram with rich inhomogeneity, relate that inhomogeneity to pseudogaps, give a fundamental rationale for giant proximity effects and other emergent behavior, and provide an objective framework for separating essential from peripheral in the superconducting mechanism., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Copper oxides become superconductors rapidly upon doping with electron holes, suggesting a fundamental pairing instability. The Cooper mechanism explains normal superconductivity as an instability of a fermi-liquid state, but high-temperature superconductors derive from a Mott-insulator normal state, not a fermi liquid. We show that precocity to pair condensation with doping is a natural property of competing antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity on a singly-occupied lattice, thus generalizing the Cooper instability to doped Mott insulators, with significant implications for the high-temperature superconducting mechanism., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

A full Fermi surface exists in underdoped high-temperature superconductors if the temperature T lies above the pseudogap temperature T*. Below T* only arcs of Fermi surface survive, scaling with T/T* as T -> 0, with T* displaying strong doping dependence. There is no accepted explanation for this behavior. We show that generalizing the BCS theory of normal superconductivity to include d-wave pairs and antiferromagnetism leads to the origin and doping dependence of the T* scale, and a quantitative description of Fermi arcs. We extend the SU(4) model [1-5] for high-Tc superconductivity to an SU(4)k model that permits explicit momentum (k) dependence in predicted observables. We derive and solve gap equations that depend on k, temperature, and doping from the SU(4)k coherent states, and show that the new SU(4)k model reduces to the original SU(4) model for observables that do not depend explicitly on momentum. The results of the SU(4)k model are relevant for experiments such as ARPES that detect explicitly k-dependent properties. The present SU(4)k model describes quantitatively the pseudogap temperature scale and may explain why the ARPES-measured T* along the anti-nodal direction is larger than other measurements that do not resolve momentum. It also provides an immediate microscopic explanation for Fermi arcs observed in the pseudogap region. In addition, the model leads to a prediction that even in the underdoped regime, there exist doping-dependent windows around nodal points in the k-space, where antiferromagnetism may be completely suppressed for all doping fractions, permitting pure superconducting states to exist., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We use a symmetry-constrained variational procedure to construct a generalization of BCS to include Cooper pairs with non-zero momentum and angular momentum. The resulting gap equations are solved at zero and finite temperature, and the doping-dependent solutions are used to construct gap and phase diagrams. We find a pseudogap terminating at a critical doping that may be interpreted in terms of both competing order and preformed pairs. The strong similarity between observation and predicted gap and phase structure suggests that this approach may provide a unified description of the complex structure observed for cuprate superconductors., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

Temperature-dependent gap equations in the SU(4) model of high-Tc superconductivity are derived and analytical solutions are obtained. Based on these solutions, a generic gap diagram describing the features of energy gaps as functions of doping P is presented and a phase diagram illustrating the phase structure as a function of temperature T and doping P is sketched. A special doping point P_q occurs naturally in the solutions that separates two phases at temperature T = 0: a pure superconducting phase on one side (P > P_q) and a phase with superconductivity strongly suppressed by antiferromagnetism on the other (P < P_q). We interpret P_q as a quantum phase transition point. Moreover, the pairing gap is found to have two solutions for P < P_q: a small gap that is associated with competition between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism and is responsible for the ground state superconductivity, and a large gap without antiferromagnetic suppression that corresponds to a collective excited state. A pseudogap appears in the solutions that terminates at P_q and originates from the competition between d-wave superconductivity and antiferromagnetism. Nevertheless, this conclusion does not contradict the preformed pair picture conceptually if the preformed pairs are generally defined as any pairs formed before pairing condensation., Comment: 23 pages, 5 color figures

The mechanism that leads to high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates remains an open question despite intense study for nearly two decades. Here, we introduce an SU(4) model for cuprate systems having many similarities to dynamical symmetries known to play an important role in nuclear structure physics and in elementary particle physics. Analytical solutions in three dynamical symmetry limits of this model are found: an SO(4) limit associated with antiferromagnetic order; an SU(2) limit that may be interpreted as a d-wave pairing condensate; and an SO(5) limit that may be interpreted as a doorway state between the antiferromagnetic order and the superconducting order. SU(4) dynamical symmetry is shown to imply a no-double-occupancy constraint on the minimal symmetry description of antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity. This implies a maximum doping fraction of 1/4 for cuprates and provides a microscopic critique of the projected SO(5) model. We propose that SU(4) superconductors are representative of a class of compounds that we term non-abelian superconductors. An SU(4) model of high-temperature superconductivity and antiferromagnetism has recently been proposed. The SO(5) group employed by Zhang is embedded in this SU(4) as a subgroup, suggesting a connection between our SU(4) model and the Zhang SO(5) model. In order to understand the relationship between the the two models, we have used generalized coherent states to analyze the nature of the SO(5) subgroup. By constructing coherent-state energy surfaces, we demonstrate explicitly that the SU(4) supset SO(5) symmetry can be interpreted as a critical dynamical symmetry interpolating between superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases, and that this critical dynamical symmetry has many similarities to critical dynamical symmetries identified previously in other fields of physics. More generally, we demonstrate with this example that the mathematical techniques associated with generalized coherent states may have powerful applications in condensed matter physics because they provide a clear connection between microscopic many-body theories and their broken-symmetry approximate solutions. In addition, these methods may be interpreted as defining the most general Bogoliubov transformation subject to a Lie group symmetry constraint, thus providing a mathematical connection between algebraic formulations and the language of quasiparticle theory. Finally, we suggest that the identification of the SO(5) symmetry as a critical dynamical symmetry implies deep algebraic connections between high-temperature superconductors and seemingly unrelated phenomena in other field of physics., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, final version accepted by Phys. Recent experiments have confirmed the existence of rotational bands in the A \~ 110 mass region with very extended shapes lying between super- and hyper-deformation. Using the projected shell model, we make a first attempt to describe quantitatively such a band structure in 108Cd. Excellent agreement is achieved in the dynamic moment of inertia J(2) calculation. This allows us to suggest the spin values for the energy levels, which are experimentally unknown. It is found that at this large deformation, the sharply down-sloping orbitals in the proton i_{13/2} subshell are responsible for the irregularity in the experimental J(2), and the wave functions of the observed states have a dominant component of two-quasiparticles from these orbitals. Interplay of collective and single-particle degrees of freedom is a common phenomenon in strongly correlated many-body systems. Despite many successful efforts in the study of superdeformed nuclei, there is still unexplored physics that can be best understood only through the nuclear magnetic properties. We point out that study of the gyromagnetic factor (g-factor) may open a unique opportunity for understanding superdeformed structure. Our calculations suggest that investigation of the g-factor dependence on spin and particle number can provide important information on single-particle structure and its interplay with collective motion in the superdeformed mass-190 nuclei. We present an SU(4) model of high-temperature superconductivity having many similarities to dynamical symmetries known to play an important role in microscopic nuclear structure physics and in elementary particle physics. We show that a nearly perfect SU(3) symmetry emerges from an extended Projected Shell Model. Starting from a deformed potential we construct separate bases for neutron and proton collective rotational states by exact angular momentum projection. These rotational states are then coupled by diagonalizing a residual pairing plus quadrupole interaction. The states obtained exhibit a one-to-one correspondence with an SU(3) spectrum up to high angular momentum and excitation, and their wave functions have a near-maximal overlap with the SU(3) states. They can also be classified as rotational bands built on spin-1$\hbar$ phonon excitations, which may correspond to a geometrical scissors mode and its generalizations. Based on available experimental data, a new set of Nilsson parameters is proposed for proton-rich nuclei with proton or neutron numbers $28\leq N\leq 40$. The resulting single-particle spectra are compared with those from relativistic and non-relativistic mean field theories. Collective excitations in some even--even proton-rich nuclei in the upper $pf$ shell are investigated using the Projected Shell Model with the new Nilsson basis. It is found that the regular bands are sharply disturbed by band crossings involving $1g_{9/2}$ neutrons and protons. We present a fully quantum-mechanical, microscopic, unified treatment of ground-state band and multi-phonon $\gamma$-vibrational bands using shell model diagonalization with the triaxial projected shell model. The results agree very well with data on the g- and $\gamma$-band spectra in $^{156-170}$Er, as well as with recently measured $4^+$ 2-phonon $\gamma$-bandhead energies in $^{166}$Er and $^{168}$Er. We use generalized coherent states to analyze the SO(5) theory of high-temperature superconductivity and antiferromagnetism. We demonstrate that the SO(5) symmetry can be embedded in a larger algebra that allows it to be interpreted as a critical dynamical symmetry interpolating between antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases. We present an SU(4) model of high-$T_c$ superconductivity. One dynamical symmetry of this model corresponds to the previously proposed SO(5) model for unification of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism, but there are two additional dynamical symmetries: SO(4), associated with antiferromagnetic order and SU(2), associated with a D-wave pairing condensate. The lightest superdeformed nuclei of the mass-60 region are described using the Projected Shell Model. In contrast to the heaviest superdeformed nuclei where a coherent motion of nucleons often dominates the physics, it is found that alignment of $g_{9/2}$ proton and neutron pairs determines the high spin behavior for superdeformed rotational bands in this mass region. It is predicted that, due to the systematics of shell fillings along the even--even Zn isotopic chain, observation of a regular superdeformed yrast band sequence will be unlikely for certain nuclei in this mass region., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in Phys. A new Nilsson single-particle structure is proposed for neutron-rich nuclei near $^{132}$Sn. In general, a large reduction in spin-orbit interaction is required and the neutron $N = 82$ gap persists in the new set of parameters. The ground state deformations for several isotopic chains are studied with this set and compared with the results of the standard set and with measured ones. Collective bands in two even-even, neutron-rich nuclei are calculated using the Projected Shell Model with the new set of parameters and improved agreement with existing data is found., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted for Phys. We compare Newtonian three-flavor multigroup Boltzmann (MGBT) and (Bruenn's) multigroup flux-limited diffusion (MGFLD) neutrino transport in postbounce core collapse supernova environments. We focus our study on quantities central to the postbounce neutrino heating mechanism for reviving the stalled shock. Stationary-state three-flavor neutrino distributions are developed in thermally and hydrodynamically frozen time slices obtained from core collapse and bounce simulations that implement Lagrangian hydrodynamics and MGFLD neutrino transport. Most important, we find, for a region above the gain radius, net heating rates for MGBT that are as much as ~2 times the corresponding MGFLD rates, and net cooling rates below the gain radius that are typically ~0.8 times the MGFLD rates. These differences stem from differences in the neutrino luminosities and mean inverse flux factors, which can be as much as 11% and 24%, respectively. They are greatest at earlier postbounce times for a given progenitor mass and, for a given postbounce time, greater for greater progenitor mass. It is shown that the SU(3) symmetry of the fermion dynamical symmetry model is essentially preserved even for highly nondegenerate spherical single-particle energies. The breaking of SU(3) symmetry by single-particle energy terms for either normal deformation or superdeformation occurs only through an indirect Pauli effect and is significant only when the spherical single-particle splitting within shells is artificially large relative to that observed experimentally.
