Coastal zones, particularly sandy beaches, are highly dynamic environments subject to a variety of natural and anthropogenic forcings. Instantaneous shoreline is a widely used indicator of beach changes in image-based applications, and it can display undulations at different spatial and temporal scales. Megacusps, periodic seaward and landward shoreline perturbations, are an example of such undulations that can significantly modify beach width and impact its usability. Traditionally, the study of these phenomena relied on video monitoring systems, which provide high-frequency imagery but limited spatial coverage. Instead, this study explored the potential of employing multispectral satellite-derived shorelines, specifically from Sentinel-2 (S2) and PlanetScope (PLN) platforms, for characterizing and monitoring megacusps’ formation and their dynamics over time. First, a tool was developed and validated to guarantee accurate shoreline detection, based on a combination of spectral indices, along with both thresholding and unsupervised clustering techniques. Validation of this shoreline detection phase was performed on three micro-tidal Mediterranean beaches, comparing with high-resolution orthomosaics and in-situ GNSS data, obtaining a good subpixel accuracy (with a mean absolute deviation of 1.5–5.5 m depending on the satellite type). Second, a tool for megacusp characterization was implemented and subsequent validation with reference data proved that satellite-derived shorelines could be used to robustly and accurately describe megacusps. The methodology could not only capture their amplitude and wavelength (of the order of 10 and 100 m, respectively) but also monitor their weekly–daily evolution using different potential metrics, thanks to combining S2 and PLN imagery. Our findings demonstrate that multispectral satellite imagery provides a viable and scalable solution for monitoring shoreline megacusp undulations, enhancing our understanding and offering an interesting option for coastal management.

The surface subsidence in Nanjing has become increasingly apparent because of the influence of geological conditions and the rapid progress of urbanization. Here, the theory of synthetic aperture radar interferometry is analysed, and a method based on the short baseline subset (SBAS) technology is proposed. The method can overcome time and baseline decorrelation and other factors, and it can extract points with high coherence from interferograms have short spatio-temporal baselines when the atmospheric delay phase and the noise phase in the frequency domain are used to differentiate the corresponding characteristics. The slow deformation ratio of the monitoring area over long periods can also be calculated by this method. In this study, the 16 advanced land observing satellite (ALOS) data acquired from 2007 to 2011 in Nanjing are processed by the SBAS technology and compared with levelling result. This work emphasizes that the SBAS technology could derive the cumulative deformations of surfaces and deformation fields accurately.

The effectiveness of radar interferometric techniques in non-urban areas can often be compromised due to the lack of stable natural targets. This drawback can be partially compensated through the installation of reference targets, characterized by a bright and stable radar response. The installation of passive corner reflectors (PCR) often represents a valid aid, but these objects are usually cumbersome, and suffer from severe weather conditions; furthermore, the installation of a PCR can be difficult and costly, especially in places with hard accessibility. Active reflectors (AR) represent a less cumbersome alternative to PCRs, while still providing a stable phase response. This paper describes the design, implementation, and test of an AR prototype, designed to operate with the Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR), aimed at providing a fair performance/cost benefit. These characteristics, obtained through a tradeoff between the use of off-the-shelf components and a simple architecture, can make the setup of a dense network (i.e., tens of devices) in the monitored areas feasible. The paper reports the design, implementation, and the analysis of different tests carried out in a laboratory, and in a real condition in the field, to illustrate AR reliability and estimate its phase stability.

With the continuous expansion of the high-speed railway network in China, long-span railway bridges carrying multiple tracks demand reliable and fast testing procedures and techniques. Bridge dynamic behavior analysis is a critical process in ensuring safe operation of structures. In this study, we present some experimental results of the vibration monitoring of a four-track high-speed railway bridge with a metro–track on each side: the Nanjing–Dashengguan high-speed railway bridge (NDHRB). The results were obtained using a terrestrial microwave radar interferometer named IBIS-S. The radar measurements were interpreted with the support of lidar point clouds. The results of the bridge dynamic response under different loading conditions, including high-speed trains, metro and wind were compared with the existing bridge structure health monitoring (SHM) system, underlining the high spatial (0.5 m) and temporal resolutions (50 Hz–200 Hz) of this technique for railway bridge dynamic monitoring. The detailed results can help engineers capturing the maximum train-induced bridge displacement. The bridge was also monitored by the radar from a lateral position with respect to the bridge longitudinal direction. This allowed us to have a more exhaustive description of the bridge dynamic behavior. The different effects induced by the passage of trains through different tracks and directions were distinguished. In addition, the space deformation map of the wide bridge deck under the eccentric load of trains, especially along the lateral direction (30 m), can help evaluating the running stability of high-speed trains.

An assessment of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA’s Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CyGNSS) mission for biomass studies is presented in this work on rain, coniferous, dry, and moist tropical forests. The main objective is to investigate the capability of Global Navigation Satellite Systems Reflectometry (GNSS-R) for biomass retrieval over dense forest canopies from a space-borne platform. The potential advantage of CyGNSS, as compared to monostatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) missions, relies on the increasing signal attenuation by the vegetation cover, which gradually reduces the coherent scattering component σ coh , 0 . This term can only be collected in a bistatic radar geometry. This point motivates the study of the relationship between several observables derived from Delay Doppler Maps (DDMs) with Above-Ground Biomass (AGB). This assessment is performed at different elevation angles θ e as a function of Canopy Height (CH). The selected biomass products are obtained from data collected by the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) instrument on-board the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat-1). An analysis based on the first derivative of the experimentally derived polynomial fitting functions shows that the sensitivity requirements of the Trailing Edge TE and the reflectivity Γ reduce with increasing biomass up to ~ 350 and ~ 250 ton/ha over the Congo and Amazon rainforests, respectively. The empirical relationship between TE and Γ with AGB is further evaluated at optimum angular ranges using Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP)-derived Vegetation Optical Depth ( VOD ), and the Polarization Index ( PI ). Additionally, the potential influence of Soil Moisture Content (SMC) is investigated over forests with low AGB.

In this paper, remote and in situ techniques to estimate the dynamic response of a building to ambient vibration are reported: data acquired through a real-aperture radar (RAR) interferometer and conventional accelerometers are analyzed. A five-story reinforced concrete housing building, which was damaged during the May 11th 2011 Lorca (Spain) earthquake, is used as a case study. The building was monitored using both types of instruments. The dynamic properties of the building are estimated first taking acceleration measurements using a set of 10 high-precision accelerometers installed on the roof of the building. Further, the displacement−time histories, recorded with the RAR device pointing to a corner of the building, are analyzed. Then, the ability and shortcomings of RAR measurements to deal with the fundamental frequencies of vibration of the structure are investigated. The advantages and limitations of from-inside (accelerometric) and from-outside (RAR) measurements are highlighted and discussed. A relevant conclusion is that, after strong earthquakes, RAR may be an interesting and useful tool, as it allows surveying the structural response of mid-rise buildings remotely, without the need to enter the structures, which may be dangerous for inspectors or technicians in cases of severely damaged buildings. Given that the instrumented building suffered significant damage, the ability of these kinds of measurements to detect damage is also discussed.

Understanding the effects of Earth’s surface topography on Global Navigation Satellite Systems Reflectometry (GNSS-R) space-borne data is important to calibrate experimental measurements, so as to provide accurate soil moisture content (SMC) retrievals. In this study, several scientific observables obtained from delay-Doppler maps (DDMs) 〈 | Y r , t o p o ( τ , f ) | 2 〉 generated on board the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CyGNSS) mission were evaluated as a function of several topographic parameters derived from a digital elevation model (DEM). This assessment was performed as a function of Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP)-derived SMC at grazing angles θ e ~ [20,30] ° and in a nadir-looking configuration θ e ~ [80,90] °. Global scale results showed that the width of the trailing edge (TE) was small T E ~ [100, 250] m and the reflectivity was high Γ ~ [−10, −3] dB over flat areas with low topographic heterogeneity, because of an increasing coherence of Earth-reflected Global Positioning System (GPS) signals. However, the strong impact of several topographic features over areas with rough topography provided motivation to perform a parametric analysis. A specific target area with little vegetation, low small-scale surface roughness, and a wide variety of terrains in South Asia was selected. A significant influence of several topographic parameters i.e., surface slopes and curvatures was observed. This triggered our study of the sensitivity of T E and Γ to SMC and topographic wetness index ( T W I ). Regional scale results showed that T E and Γ are strongly correlated with the T W I , while the sensitivity to SMC were almost negligible. The Pearson correlation coefficients of T E and Γ with T W I are ~ 0.59 and r T E ~−0.63 at θ e ~ [20, 30] ° and r Γ ~ 0.48 and r T E ~ −0.50 at θ e ~ [80, 90] °, respectively.

This paper reports some experimental results obtained by means of a commercial apparatus used by many researchers and users, where a pair of novel and specifically developed circular polarized antennas, designed to operate with Ku band-terrestrial radar interferometers, are used alternatively to the most conventional linear vertical polarized horns provided by the manufacturer of the apparatus. These radar acquisitions have been carried out to investigate for the first time the potential of circular polarization (CP) configurations for terrestrial radar interferometers (TRI) applications, aiming at improving monitoring of landslides, mines, and semi-urban areas. The study tries to evaluate whether the circular polarization response of natural and man-made targets can improve the interpretation of the radar images, with respect to the standard approach used in terrestrial radar interferometry, usually carried out in co-polar vertical polarization. The goal is to investigate how different polarization combinations, in terrestrial radar interferometry, affect the coherence and amplitude dispersion of natural media, potentially improving the identification of stable scatter.

The Earth’s surface bistatic reflectivity Γ L H C P , C y G N S S is experimentally characterized using the novel Global Navigation Satellite Systems Reflectometry (GNSS-R) L-band passive multistatic radar technique from the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite Systems (CyGNSS) eight-microsatellite constellation. The focus of this study is to evaluate the influence of the GNSS satellites’ elevation angle θ e on Γ L H C P , C y G N S S , as a function of soil moisture content (SMC) and effective surface roughness parameter h . As the average response, the change of the scattering regime at a global scale and considering also vegetated surfaces appears at θ e ≈ 55°. This empirical observation is understood as a change on the dominant scattering term, from incoherent to coherent. Then, the correlation of Γ L H C P , C y G N S S and SMC is evaluated as a function of θ e over specific sparsely vegetated target areas. The smoother the surface, the higher the angular variability of the Pearson correlation coefficients. Over croplands (e.g., Argentinian Pampas), an improved correlation coefficient is achieved over angular ranges where the coherent scattering regime becomes the dominant one. As such, this function depends on the surface roughness. The maximum correlation coefficients are found at different θ e for increasing mean roughness levels: r P a m p a s ≈ 0.78 at θ e ≈ [60,70]°, r I n d i a ≈ 0.72 at θ e ≈ [50,60]°, and r S u d a n ≈ 0.74 at θ e ≈ [30,40]°. SMC retrieval algorithms based on GNSS-R multi-angular information could benefit from these findings, so as to improve the accuracy using single-polarized signals.

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) agency, the World Heritage Sites (WHS) inscribed in the World Heritage List (WHL) must be safeguarded with an adequate protection system, in order to guarantee their integrity and authenticity. Currently, many UNESCO sites are threatened by geohazards, but the safeguard of these sites does not seem to be wide-ranging. Looking at the standard list of factors affecting the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of WHS, which has been adopted by the World Heritage Committee in 2008, it seems that only “sudden geological events” are considered as factors that undermine the protection of the properties. Furthermore, it is well known that slow-kinematic phenomena can also threaten cultural and natural heritage. This study proposes a satellite InSAR-based procedure to identify and monitor the temporal and spatial evolution of ground deformation related to slow-kinematic geohazards (slow-moving landslides and ground-subsidence). This procedure, applied in this work on the Tuscany Region (Italy), simplify the InSAR products interpretation, making them easily exploitable by the local WHS managers for long-term geohazards monitoring and conservation strategies. These activities, thanks to the main characteristics of the recent Sentinel-1 data (short revisit time, free availability without any restrictions and worldwide coverage), can be defined for each UNESCO site of the world.

In this paper the use of a continuous-wave microwave sensor as a non-contact tool for quantitative measurement of respiratory tidal volume has been evaluated by experimentation in seventeen healthy volunteers. The sensor working principle is reported and several causes that can affect its response are analyzed. A suitable data processing has been devised able to reject the majority of breath measurements taken under non suitable conditions. Furthermore, a relationship between microwave sensor measurements and volume inspired and expired at quiet breathing (tidal volume) has been found.
