Abstract: A space-based detector dedicated to measurements of γ-rays and charged particles has to achieve a balance between different instrumental requirements. A good angular resolution is necessary for the γ-rays, whereas an excellent geometric factor is needed for the charged particles. The tracking reference technique of γ-ray physics is based on a pair-conversion telescope made of passive material (e.g., tungsten) coupled with sensitive layers (e.g., silicon microstrip). However, this kind of detector has a limited acceptance because of the large lever arm between the active layers, needed to improve the track reconstruction capability. Moreover, the passive material can induce fragmentation of nuclei, thus worsening charge reconstruction performances. The Tracker-In-Calorimeter (TIC) project aims to solve all these drawbacks. In the TIC proposal, the silicon sensors are moved inside a highly-segmented isotropic calorimeter with a couple of external scintillators dedicated to charge reconstruction. In principle, this configuration has a good geometrical factor, and the angle of the γ-rays can be precisely reconstructed from the lateral profile of the electromagnetic shower sampled, at different depths in the calorimeter, by silicon strips. The effectiveness of this approach has been studied with Monte Carlo simulations and validated with beam test data of a small prototype.

Abstract: Calorimetric space experiments were employed for the direct measurements of cosmic-ray spectra above the TeV region. According to several theoretical models and recent measurements, relevant features in both electron and nucleus fluxes are expected. Unfortunately, sizable disagreements among the current results of different space calorimeters exist. In order to improve the accuracy of future experiments, it is fundamental to understand the reasons of these discrepancies, especially since they are not compatible with the quoted experimental errors. A few articles of different collaborations suggest that a systematic error of a few percentage points related to the energy-scale calibration could explain these differences. In this work, we analyze the impact of the nonproportionality of the light yield of scintillating crystals on the energy scale of typical calorimeters. Space calorimeters are usually calibrated by employing minimal ionizing particles (MIPs), e.g., nonshowering proton or helium nuclei, which feature different ionization density distributions with respect to particles included in showers. By using the experimental data obtained by the CaloCube collaboration and a minimalist model of the light yield as a function of the ionization density, several scintillating crystals (BGO, CsI(Tl), LYSO, YAP, YAG and BaF2) are characterized. Then, the response of a few crystals is implemented inside the Monte Carlo simulation of a space calorimeter to check the energy deposited by electromagnetic and hadronic showers. The results of this work show that the energy scale obtained by MIP calibration could be affected by sizable systematic errors if the nonproportionality of scintillation light is not properly taken into account.

Abstract: On 25 August 2018, a G3-class geomagnetic storm reached the Earth’s magnetosphere, causing a transient rearrangement of the charged particle environment around the planet, which was detected by the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD) on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01). We found that the count rates of electrons in the MeV range were characterized by a depletion during the storm’s main phase and a clear enhancement during the recovery caused by large substorm activity, with the key role played by auroral processes mapped into the outer belt. A post-storm rate increase was localized at L-shells immediately above ∼3 and mostly driven by non-adiabatic local acceleration caused by possible resonant interaction with low-frequency magnetospheric waves.

Abstract: The radiation belts in the Earth’s magnetosphere pose a hazard to satellite systems and spacecraft missions (both manned and unmanned), heavily affecting payload design and resources, thus resulting in an impact on the overall mission performance and final costs. The NASA AE9/AP9/SPM radiation models for energetic electrons, protons, and plasma provide useful information on the near-Earth environment, but they are still incomplete as to some features and, for some energy ranges, their predictions are not based on a statistically sufficient sample of direct measurements. Therefore, it is of the upmost importance to provide new data and direct measurements to improve their output. In this work, the AP9 model is applied to the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01) orbit to estimate the flux of energetic protons over the South Atlantic Anomaly during a short testing period of one day, 1 January 2021. Moreover, a preliminary comparison with proton data obtained from the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD) on board CSES-01 is carried out. This estimation will serve as the starting ground for a forthcoming complete data analysis, enabling extensive testing and validation of current theoretical and empirical models.

Abstract: New results on the galactic cosmic ray (GCR) short-term intensity variation associated with Forbush decrease and co-rotating interaction regions (CIRs) measured by the PAMELA instrument between November 2006 and March 2007 are presented. Most of the past measurements on Forbush decrease events were carried out with neutron monitor detector. This tecnique allows only indirect detection of the overall GCR intensity over an integrated energy range. For the first time, thanks to the unique features of the PAMELA magnetic spectrometer, the Forbush decrease associated with the December 13th coronal mass ejection (CME) was studied in a wide rigidity range (0.4-20 GV) and for different species of GCRs detected directly in space. Using GCR protons, the amplitude and the recovery time of the Forbush decrease were studied for ten rigidity interval with a temporal resolution of one day. For comparison the helium and the electron intensity over time were also studied. The temporal evolution of the helium and proton intensity was found in good agreement while the electrons show, on average, a faster recovery time. Abstract: The e^+p charged-current deep inelastic scattering cross sections, $d\sigma/dQ^2$ for Q^2 between 200 and 60000 GeV^2, and $d\sigma/dx$ and $d\sigma/dy$ for Q^2 > 200 GeV^2, have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. A data sample of 47.7 pb^-1, collected at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV, has been used. The cross section $d\sigma/dQ^2$ falls by a factor of about 50000 as Q^2 increases from 280 to 30000 GeV^2. The double differential cross section $d^2\sigma/dxdQ^2$ has also been measured. A comparison between the data and Standard Model (SM) predictions shows that contributions from antiquarks ($\bar{u}$ and $\bar{c}$) and quarks (d and s) are both required by the data. The predictions of the SM give a good description of the full body of the data presented here. A comparison of the charged-current cross section $d\sigma/dQ^2$ with the recent ZEUS results for neutral-current scattering shows that the weak and electromagnetic forces have similar strengths for Q^2 above $M^2_W, M^2_Z$. A fit to the data for $d\sigma/dQ^2$ with the Fermi constant $G_F$ and $M_W$ as free parameters yields $G_F = (1.171 \pm 0.034 (stat.) ^{+0.026}_{-0.032} (syst.) ^{+0.016}_{-0.015} (PDF)) \times 10^{-5} GeV^{-2}$ and $M_W = 80.8 ^{+4.9}_{-4.5} (stat.) ^{+5.0}_{-4.3} (syst.) ^{+1.4}_{-1.3} (PDF) GeV$. Abstract: We have investigated the problem of track finding with a recurrent neural network algorithm based on the Hopfield model and considered the possibility of a hardware implementation with DSP’s. Starting from a set of signal points we define track segments and set a cut on the length to keep the size of the network reasonable. Those segments surviving the cut are associated to neurons. A geometric coupling of neighbouring segments is used to select smooth combinations of them. Given random initial conditions the network converges to a solution. The method may be applied to a variety of curves.

Abstract: Events containing an isolated prompt photon with high transverse energy, together with a balancing jet, have been observed for the first time in photoproduction at HERA. The data were taken with the ZEUS detector, in a γp centre of mass energy range 120-250 GeV. The fraction of the incoming photon energy participating in the production of the prompt photon and the jet, xγ, shows a strong peak near unity, consistent with LO QCD Monte Carlo predictions. In the transverse energy and pseudorapidity range 5 ≤ EγT < 10 GeV, -0.7 ≤ ηγ < 0.8, EjetT ≥ 5 GeV, and -1.5 ≤ ηjet ≤ 1.8, with xOBSγ > 0.8, the measured cross section is 15.3 ± 3.8 ± 1.8 pb, in good agreement with a recent NLO calculation. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: In deep inelastic neutral current scattering of positrons and protons at the center of mass energy of 300 GeV, we observe, with the ZEUS detector, events with a high energy neutron produced at very small scattering angles with respect to the proton direction. Abstract: Elastic and proton-dissociative ρ0 photoproduction (γp → p0p, γp → ρ0N, respectively, with p0 → π+π-) has been studied in ep interactions at HERA for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 50 < W < 100 GeV and for |t| < 0.5 GeV2, where t is the square of the four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex; the results on the proton-dissociative reaction are presented for masses of the dissociated proton system in the range M2N < 0.1W2. For the elastic process, the π+π- invariant mass spectrum has been investigated as a function of t. As in fixed target experiments, the ρ0 resonance shape is asymmetric; this asymmetry decreases with increasing |t|, as expected in models in which the asymmetry is ascribed to the interference of resonant and non-resonant π+π- production. The cross section has been studied as a function of W; a fit to the resonant part with the form Wa gives a = 0.16 ± 0.06 (stat.) +0.11-0.15 (syst.). The resonant part of the γp → π+π-p cross section is 11.2 ± 0.1 (stat.) +1.1-1.2 (syst.) μb at 〈W〉 = 71.7 GeV. The t dependence of the cross section can be described by a function of the type Aρ exp (-bρ|t| + cρt2) with bρ = 10.9 ± 0.3 (stat.) +1.0-0.5 (syst.) GeV-2 and cρ = 2.7 ± 0.9 (stat.) +1.9-1.7 (syst.) GeV-4. The t dependence has also been studied as a function of W and a value of the slope of the pomeron trajectory α IP′ = 0.23 ± 0.15 (stat.) +0.10-0.07 (syst.) GeV-2 has been deduced. The ρ0 spin density matrix elements r0400 r041-1 and ℜe[r0410] have been measured and found to be consistent with expectations based on s-channel helicity conservation. For proton-dissociative π+π- photoproduction in the ρ0 mass range, the distributions of the two-pion invariant mass, W and the polar and azimuthal angles of the pions in the helicity frame are the same within errors as those for the elastic process. The t distribution has been fitted to an exponential function with a slope parameter 5.8 ± 0.3 (stat.) ± 0.5 (syst.) GeV-2. The ratio of the elastic to proton-dissociative ρ0 photoproduction cross section is 2.0 ± 0.2 (stat.) ± 0.7 (syst.).

Abstract: Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction e+p → e+ + jet + X with quasi-real photons have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. These cross sections are given for the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy interval 134 < W < 277 GeV and jet pseudorapidity in the range -1 < ηjet < 2 in the laboratory frame. The results are presented for three cone radii in the η - φ plane, R = 1.0, 0.7 and 0.5. Measurements of dσ/dηjet above various jet-transverse-energy thresholds up to 25 GeV and in three ranges of W are presented and compared to next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations. For jets defined with R = 1.0 differences between data and NLO calculations are seen at high ηjet and low EjetT. The measured cross sections for jets defined with R = 0.7 are well described by the calculations in the entire measured range ηjet and EjetT. The inclusive jet cross section for EjetT > 21 GeV is consistent with an approximately linear variation with the cone radius R in the range between 0.5 and 1.0, and with NLO calculations.

Abstract: LHCf, the smallest of the LHC experiment, has been designed to study the forward production of neutral particles in proton-proton collisions at LHC. The aim of the experiment is to provide valuable information for the calibration of the nuclear interaction models used in the Monte Carlo codes developed for high and ultra-high energy cosmic ray Physics. These data are of extreme importance for the extraction of primary cosmic ray properties. In particular, since LHCf will take data already in the rst phase of operation of the LHC at 3.5+3.5 TeV up to the ultimate energy of 7+7 TeV, it will be able to span the most interesting energy range for high energy cosmic rays, above the “knee” region. To accomplish these precision measurements, LHCf is made of two double arm high precision calorimeters placed on both side of ATLAS interaction point. In this paper the performance of the LHCf detector will be discussed with particular emphasis to the early physics program.
