Introducción: Las fracturas diafisarias y distales de tibia son lesiones frecuentes en personas jóvenes que sufren un trauma de alta energía y en ancianos por un trauma de baja energía. El objetivo de este estudio fue comparar el tiempo quirúrgico, el uso de radioscopia, la evaluación funcional y el dolor en el tratamiento de fracturas diafisarias y distales de tibia mediante una técnica suprarrotuliana y una infrarrotuliana. Materiales y Métodos: Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo entre marzo de 2018 y octubre de 2019. La información de los pacientes se obtuvo de la historia clínica electrónica. Se incluyó a pacientes con fracturas diafisarias y distales de tibia. Se estudiaron y compararon los tiempos de radioscopia y de cirugía. El dolor posoperatorio se evaluó mediante la escala analógica visual y la función, con el puntaje de Lysholm. Resultados: Ochenta pacientes cumplían con los criterios de inclusión. Sus datos sociodemográficos fueron pareados en dos grupos similares. Treinta y seis pacientes fueron tratados con la técnica infrarrotuliana y 44, con la técnica suprarrotuliana. Se obtuvieron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en el tiempo de cirugía, el tiempo de radioscopia y en el puntaje de la escala analógica visual para dolor al año. Conclusiones: Los resultados mostraron un menor tiempo de cirugía y de radioscopia, y mejores resultados en la escala analógica visual para dolor con la técnica suprarrotuliana para el tratamiento de las fracturas mediodiafisarias y distales de tibia.

Building from previous research showing a bilingual advantage in school, the present study investigated the link between bilingualism and academic motivation. We asked whether bilingual students would exhibit higher levels of intrinsic or extrinsic motivation than their monolingual peers, how intrinsic and extrinsic motivation would change over time, and the extent to which those forms of motivation would be in tension with one another. Relative to their monolingual peers, we expected bilingual students to (1) report higher levels of both intrinsic and extrinsic forms of motivation, and (2) show a weaker negative correlation between intrinsic and extrinsic forms of motivation. Bilingual status, intrinsic motivation, and extrinsic motivation were measured at two time points in a diverse sample of 1047 3rd-grade through 8th-grade students (851 monolingual, 196 bilingual). Bilingual students reported significantly higher levels of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation than monolingual students. They also showed a sharper decline in intrinsic motivation from fall to spring. Intrinsic and extrinsic forms of motivation were negatively correlated for monolinguals, but unrelated for bilinguals, suggesting that the two motive types may be less antagonistic among students who speak a language other than English at home. These differences may be driven by both cognitive (e.g., executive functioning skills) and cultural (e.g., family cohesion, interdependent orientation) factors, and may inform educators who wish to support learning for students from diverse groups.

Abstract The late Middle Pleistocene, starting at around 300 ka, witnessed large-scale biological and cultural dynamics in hominin evolution across Africa including the onset of the Middle Stone Age that is closely associated with the evolution of our species—Homo sapiens. However, archaeological and geochronological data of its earliest appearance are scarce. Here we report on the late Middle Pleistocene sequence of Wadi Lazalim, in the Sahara of Southern Tunisia, which has yielded evidence for human occupations bracketed between ca. 300–130 ka. Wadi Lazalim contributes valuable information on the spread of early MSA technocomplexes across North Africa, that likely were an expression of large-scale diffusion processes.

We present the geomorphological map of the northwestern part of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, where the landscape expresses the tectonic activity associated with the Arabia-Eurasia convergence and Neogene climate change. These processes influenced the evolution of landforms and fluvial pathways, where major rivers Tigris, Khabur, and Great Zab incise the landscape of Northeastern Mesopotamia Anticlinal ridges and syncline trough compose the Zagros orogen. The development of water and wind gaps, slope, and karsts processes in the highlands and the tilting of fluvial terraces in the flat areas are the main evidence of the relationship between tectonics, climate variations and geomorphological processes. During the Quaternary, especially after the Last Glacial Maximum, fluctuating arid and wet periods also influenced local landforms and fluvial patterns of the area. Finally, the intensified Holocene human occupation and agricultural activities during the passage to more complex societies over time impacted the evolution of the landscape in this part of Mesopotamia.

The interaction of human dispersal patterns with landscape features can in many cases provide useful information on the sustenance strategies of past communities. Mapping the present landscape is a necessary step in recognizing the nature, impact, and diffusion of the processes which drive the behaviour of past populations and modify palaeolandscapes. We constructed a map of the land units in the southwestern corner of Sardinia and compared them with the distribution of known Bronze Age megalithic towers called nuraghes. The vast majority of nuraghes are near the plains or at mid elevations close to the river network, in areas with the highest landscape diversity. The occurrence of nuraghes also seems to be related to elevated outcrops giving the advantage of a raised position and stable foundations. Denudation processes, Late Holocene sea level rise, and anthropogenic disturbance seem to be the most important factors driving changes in the palaeolandscape.

Khartoum is one of the largest cities in Africa, located immediately south of the junction of the Blue and White Nile rivers in central Sudan. The growth of the Greater Khartoum-Omdurman conurbation arose – without a proper urban plan – from the agricultural wealth created through the completion of three dams, and mostly in the last three decades. Urban expansion was enabled by and helped to enhance the major agricultural expansion of the Gezira clay plains located to the south between the lower Blue and White Nile rivers. The region has been a focus of human settlement for at least 8,000 years, initially by semi-sedentary groups with a fishing-hunting-gathering lifestyle and later by Neolithic groups as shown by hundreds of archaeological sites. Today, Khartoum is a desert city, still very vulnerable to floods triggered by intense convectional storms. Such extreme events may become more common in future, representing a major geomorphological hazard. Moreover, uncontrolled urban and agricultural development is threatening most of the cultural heritage of the region.

The recent advances in precision agriculture are due to the emergence of modern robotics systems. For instance, unmanned aerial systems (UASs) give new possibilities that advance the solution of existing problems in this area in many different aspects. The reason is due to these platforms’ ability to perform activities at varying levels of complexity. Therefore, this research presents a multiple-cooperative robot solution for UAS and unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) systems for their joint inspection of olive grove inspect traps. This work evaluated the UAS and UGV vision-based navigation based on a yellow fly trap fixed in the trees to provide visual position data using the You Only Look Once (YOLO) algorithms. The experimental setup evaluated the fuzzy control algorithm applied to the UAS to make it reach the trap efficiently. Experimental tests were conducted in a realistic simulation environment using a robot operating system (ROS) and CoppeliaSim platforms to verify the methodology’s performance, and all tests considered specific real-world environmental conditions. A search and landing algorithm based on augmented reality tag (AR-Tag) visual processing was evaluated to allow for the return and landing of the UAS to the UGV base. The outcomes obtained in this work demonstrate the robustness and feasibility of the multiple-cooperative robot architecture for UGVs and UASs applied in the olive inspection scenario.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are a suitable solution for monitoring growing cultures due to the possibility of covering a large area and the necessity of periodic monitoring. In inspection and monitoring tasks, the UAV must find an optimal or near-optimal collision-free route given initial and target positions. In this sense, path-planning strategies are crucial, especially online path planning that can represent the robot’s operational environment or for control purposes. Therefore, this paper proposes an online adaptive path-planning solution based on the fusion of rapidly exploring random trees (RRT) and deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms applied to the generation and control of the UAV autonomous trajectory during an olive-growing fly traps inspection task. The main objective of this proposal is to provide a reliable route for the UAV to reach the inspection points in the tree space to capture an image of the trap autonomously, avoiding possible obstacles present in the environment. The proposed framework was tested in a simulated environment using Gazebo and ROS. The results showed that the proposed solution accomplished the trial for environments up to 300 m3 and with 10 dynamic objects.

We present the results of the geomorphological mapping of a region of the Dhofar (Sultanate of Oman) including two contrasting physiographic units sharing a common drainage system into the Arabian Sea: the Jebel Qara limestone massif and the coastal plain of Salalah. Neogene to Quaternary tectonic activity controlled the formation of an extensive system of faults and caused the uplift of the Jebel Qara, forming structural escarpments. The massif underwent karstification and subsequent linear erosion. Today the Jebel is cut by a dendritic net of dry valleys, occasionally dammed by calcareous tufa dams. The transition between the southern escarpment of the Jebel and the plain below displays flat alluvial fans, bordered by a strip of beachrock, coastal dunes, and coastal lagoons, located in correspondence to estuaries. Dramatic soil erosion is evident, linked to intense human-triggered zoogeomorphological processes started in the Mid-Late Holocene after the introduction of pastoral land-use.

La fascitis necrotizante es una infección potencialmente letal. Es esencial un diagnóstico y tratamiento temprano. Las técnicas de reconstrucción y los protocolos de rehabilitación han sido escasamente descritos. El objetivo de este trabajo es describir los resultados del tratamiento oportuno para la conservación de miembros y la rehabilitación temprana en un caso de fascitis necrotizante masiva de miembros inferiores. Presentamos un caso de fascitis necrotizante en miembros inferiores, tratado quirúrgicamente mediante sistema de aspiración negativa, colgajos musculares e injerto cutáneo. Describimos su protocolo de rehabilitación y los resultados al año de seguimiento.

We studied the Pleistocene subsurface stratigraphy of an area in the northern Po Plain around the isolated tectonic hillocks of Castenedolo and Ciliverghe (Brescia, Italy) in order to estimate their long-term rates of tectonic deformation. Integrated stratigraphy of a new 100-m-long core (RL13) allowed better definition of the regional Y (0.45 Ma) and R (0.87 Ma) surfaces and the related magnetostratigraphically calibrated PS1, PS2, and PS3 depositional sequences. The Y surface in the RL13 core was placed at the base of the PS3 proximal braided river system that was deposited during middle Pleistocene within the Brunhes chron. The R surface is considered to be eroded within the PS2 braid-plain deposits at ca. 0.87 Ma between the top of Jaramillo subchron and the Bruhnes chron during the late Early Pleistocene. Based on different datasets, we evaluated the sedimentation rate, which has decreased from 0.09 mm/yr with deposition of PS2, to 0.06 mm/yr with deposition of PS3. The tectonic uplift, with an average rate of ~0.1 mm/yr in the last ca. 0.87 Ma, is interpreted to be associated with a fault and related fault-propagation folding. The Castenedolo and Ciliverghe hillocks then formed due to tectonic uplift during a change in the sedimentation regime since 0.45 Ma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The positioning and construction of castles in ancient times responded not only to strategic opportunity, but also to the issue of geomorphological risk. We investigated castles and strongholds built in the era of the Great Countess Matilda of Canossa in part of the northern Apennines (Italy), in order to study the relationship between their positioning and the distribution of geomorphological and geological hazards. We observe how the location of castles follows clear patterns of avoidance of potential hazards: castles are kept far from the main fault systems and stream networks, and are mainly at a safe distance from landslide- and badlands-susceptible terrains. The knowledge of Medieval communities on landscape hazards was sufficiently advanced to minimise risks, while maintaining the strategic value of fortifications.

The Mt. Cusna ridge, located in the Northern Apennines (North Italy), is a mountain area of relevant geological interest for the interaction through time of distinct geomorphic processes, acting since the end of the Last Glacial Maximum. A geomorphological map at the 1:10,000 scale was produced to characterise the main landforms and processes identifiable on the ridge. From this, a detailed reconstruction of the Holocene landscape history of the area is drawn. After deglaciation, at the end of the Pleistocene, glacial and periglacial processes left wide deposits and barren surfaces. Slope and running water processes acted cyclically on the landscape through phases of stronger slope denudation and landslide activation followed by stability periods. These processes are related to the main climatic changes recorded for the N Apennines during the Holocene. Since the Late Holocene, the impact of human communities may have played a prominent role as an agent of landscape modification.
