Abstract

The Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) is a community-driven standard for the organization of data and metadata from a growing range of neuroscience modalities. This paper is meant as a history of how the standard has developed and grown over time. We outline the principles behind the project, the mechanisms by which it has been extended, and some of the challenges being addressed as it evolves. We also discuss the lessons learned through the project, with the aim of enabling researchers in other domains to learn from the success of BIDS.

Abstract

The purpose of this review is to summarize essential biological, pharmaceutical, and clinical aspects in the field of topically applied medicines that may help scientists when trying to develop new topical medicines. After a brief history of topical drug delivery, a review of the structure and function of the skin and routes of drug absorption and their limitations is provided. The most prevalent diseases and current topical treatment approaches are then detailed, the organization of which reflects the key disease categories of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, microbial infections, skin cancers, and genetic skin diseases. The complexity of topical product development through to large-scale manufacturing along with recommended risk mitigation approaches are then highlighted. As such topical treatments are applied externally, patient preferences along with the challenges they invoke are then described, and finally the future of this field of drug delivery is discussed, with an emphasis on areas that are more likely to yield significant improvements over the topical medicines in current use or would expand the range of medicines and diseases treatable by this route of administration.

14. Paired Associative Stimulation drives the emergence of motor resonance.

Abstract

Associative plasticity, the neurophysiological bases of Hebbian learning, has been implied in the formation of the association between sensory and motor representations of actions in the Mirror Neuron System; however, such inductor role still needs empirical support. We have assessed whether Paired Associative Stimulation (PAS), known to activate Hebbian associative plasticity, can induce the formation of atypical (absent in normal conditions), visuo-motor associations, reshaping motor resonance. Healthy participants underwent a novel PAS protocol (mirror-PAS, m-PAS), during which they were exposed to repeated pairings of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) applied over the right primary motor cortex (M1), time-locked with the view of index-finger movements of the right (ipsilateral) hand. In a first experiment, the inter-stimulus interval (ISI) between visual-action stimuli and TMS pulses was varied. Before and after each m-PAS session, motor resonance was assessed by recording Motor Evoked Potentials induced by single-pulse TMS applied to the right M1, during the observation of both contralateral (left) and ipsilateral (right) index-finger movements. In the second experiment, the specificity of the m-PAS was assessed by presenting a visual stimulus depicting a non-biological movement. Before m-PAS, the facilitation of corticospinal excitability occurred only during the view of contralateral (with respect to the TMS side) index-finger movements. The m-PAS induced new ipsilateral motor resonance responses, indexed by atypical facilitation of corticospinal excitability by the view of ipsilateral hand movements. This effect occurred only if the associative stimulation followed the chronometry of motor control (ISI of 25 ms) and if the visual stimulus of the m-PAS depicts a biological movement (human hand action). The present findings provide the first empirical evidence that Hebbian learning induced by a PAS protocol shapes the visual-motor matching properties of the human Mirror Neuron System. • Paired Associative Stimulation induces atypical visuo-motor associations. • Hebbian learning mediates the visuo-motor properties of the Mirror Neuron System. • Motor resonance in humans can be re-shaped by Paired Associative Stimulation. Analyzing not only American high modernism but also middlebrow and genre fiction, the article demonstrates how American literature in weekly publications conflicted with traditional cultural values and Fascist monitoring and censoring, and how it was instrumental to Italian social and cultural modernity.

16. Touch anticipation mediates cross-modal Hebbian plasticity in the primary somatosensory cortex

Abstract

Paired associative stimulation (PAS) protocols can be used to induce Hebbian plasticity in the human brain. A modified, cross-modal version, of the PAS (cross-modal PAS, cm-PAS) has been recently developed. The cm-PAS consists in the repetitive pairings of a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) pulse over the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and a visual stimulus depicting a hand being touched; a 20 ms of inter-stimulus interval (ISI) is required to affect S1 plasticity, in turn modulating tactile acuity and somatosensory evoked potentials. The present study explores the role of anticipatory simulation in the cm-PAS efficacy, which could be responsible for such a short ISI. To this aim, we compared the effect of the original, fixed-frequency, cm-PAS to that of a jittered version, in which the time interval between trials was not steady but jittered, hence avoiding the anticipation of the upcoming visual-touch stimulus. Moreover, in the jitteredPAS, the ISI between the paired stimulations was varied: it could match the early, somatosensory-driven, activation of S1 (20 ms), or the mirror recruitment of S1 by touch observation (150 ms). Results showed that tactile acuity is enhanced by the fixed-frequencycm-PAS, with an ISI of 20 ms between paired stimulation (visual-touch stimulus and TMS pulse over S1), and also by the jitteredcm-PAS but only if the ISI is of 150 ms. These findings suggest that the cm-PAS with a jittered frequency, by preventing an anticipatory pre-activation of S1, delays the timing of the interaction between the visual-touch stimulus and the cortical pulse. On a broader perspective, our study highlights the possible involvement of sensory anticipation, likely through mirror-like simulation mechanisms, in tactile mirroring, as well as its influence of the optimal interval between the afferent and the magnetic pulse during PAS protocols.

17. Keeping order in the brain: The supramarginal gyrus and serial order in short-term memory

Abstract

A wide range of human activities are performed sequentially in few seconds. We need to maintain a correct temporal order of words in language, movements in actions, directions in navigation, etc. Therefore, it is plausible, in a more economical perspective, that our brain is equipped with a dedicated mechanism for storing a temporal sequence for a short time. To investigate it, we run four TMS experiments, in which participants performed different short-term memory tasks, i.e., three (verbal, spatial, motor) requiring maintenance of an ordered sequence and one (visual) of a static pattern. We demonstrated, for the first time, that the left supramarginal gyrus is one of the key nodes of the STM network involved in retaining an abstract representation of serial order information, independently from the content information, namely the nature of the item to be remembered, which instead is stored separately.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of undiagnosed celiac disease (CD) in the parents of preterm and/or small for gestational age (SGA) infants.A sample of 1,714 parents (868 women, 846 men) of 905 preterm (37 wk of gestational age) and/or SGA (10th percentile of birthweight) infants consecutively born in Lombardy, Northern Italy, and not diagnosed with CD prior to pregnancy, were tested for CD. Diagnosis was based on antitissue transglutaminase and anti-endomysial antibodies and confirmed by duodenal biopsy.The overall prevalence of undiagnosed CD was 0.64% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.32-1.15%), 0.92% (0.40-1.81%) in women and 0.35% (0.07-1.03%) in men. In the mothers of preterm infants prevalence of CD was 0.39% (0.05-1.39%). In the mothers of SGA infants prevalence of CD was 1.60% (0.64-3.27%), and the observed number of mothers with CD was 2.25 times higher than the expected one in the Italian female population (P = 0.039). Undiagnosed CD in mothers was associated with an increased risk of SGA birth (odds ratio 6.97, 95% CI 1.11-43.55%).While additional powered studies are needed, the present results suggest that the prevalence of undiagnosed CD in the mothers of SGA infants is higher than in the general female population.

20. Rediscovering the European identity approach: Umberto Campagnolo and the periodical Comprendre in the 1950s.

Abstract

The Italian philosopher Umberto Campagnolo was a unique player in the Cold War years, being determined to bring about a dialogue between men of culture on intellectuals' function in society and on European identity beyond the East-West divide. Following the evolution of the politically independent Société européenne de culture founded by Campagnolo in 1950, this essay is based on its periodical Comprendre in order to outline the critical reception of the philosopher's idea of a universal civilization built on the undogmatic features of Christianity and capable of understanding reality from an historical point of view (the «civilisation de l'universel»). Though mistaken for a neo-colonialist concept, the «civilisation de l'universel» entrusted Europe with the responsibility of fostering peace through its values at a time when a reconsideration of its identity was needed due to growing political and economic integration and the decolonization process. Abstract

A multicentre, randomised, open trial with a 2 x 2 factorial design was conducted to compare the benefits and risks of two thrombolytic agents, streptokinase (SK, 1·5 MU infused intravenously over 30-60 min) and alteplase (tPA, 100 mg infused intravenously over 3 h) in patients with acute myocardial infarction admitted to coronary care units within 6 h from onset of symptoms. The patients were also randomised to receive heparin (12 500 U subcutaneously twice daily until discharge from hospital, starting 12 h after beginning the tPA or SK infusion) or usual therapy. All patients without specific contraindications were given atenolol (5-10 mg iv) and aspirin (300-325 mg a day). The end-point of the study was the combined estimate of death plus severe left ventricular damage. 12 490 patients were randomised to four treatment groups (SK alone, SK plus heparin, tPA alone, tPA plus heparin). No specific differences between the two thrombolytic agents were detected as regards the combined end-point (tPA 23·1%; SK 22·5%; relative risk 1·04, 95% Cl 0·95-1·13), nor after the addition of heparin to the aspirin treatment (hep 22·7%, no hep 22·9%; RR 0·99, 95% Cl 0·91-1·08). The outcome of patients allocated to the four treatment groups was similar with respect to baseline risk factors such as age, Killip class, hours from onset of symptoms, and site and type of infarct. The rates of major in-hospital cardiac complications (reinfarction, post-infarction angina) were also similar. The incidence of major bleeds was significantly higher in SK and heparin treated patients (respectively, tPA 0·5%, SK 1·0%, RR 0·57, 95% Cl 0·38-0·85; hep 1·0%, no hep 0·6%, RR 1·64, 95% Cl 1·09-2·45), whereas the overall incidence of stroke was similar in all groups. SK and tPA appear equally effective and safe for use in routine conditions of care, in all infarct patients who have no contraindications, with or without post-thrombolytic heparin treatment. The 8·8% hospital mortality of the study population (compared with approximately 13% in the control cohort of the GISSI-1 trial) indicates the beneficial impact of the proven acute treatments for AMI.

28. Transferring ARMin to the Clinics and Industry.

Abstract

In the last few years, novel robotic technology has been developed that has the potential to improve upper extremity function after spinal cord injury (SCI), stroke, and other neurological diseases. Three generations of the arm therapy robot ARMin were developed and clinically evaluated on many patients. Key focus was on the training of functional tasks incorporating activities of daily living (ADL) with large range of motion of the entire arm in order to enhance transfer to daily life and improve quality of life. Encouraged by the promising results in first single-case studies performed with ARMin I and ARMin II, an optimized ARMin III was developed and duplicated and is currently being used within a 4-center randomized clinical trial. A fourth generation of ARMin is currently under development that will have further functional benefits with respect to patient-cooperative control and therapy assessment. Intellectual property has been identified for technology transfer and commercial exploitation. The continuation of the clinical research and the future product development and commercialization may satisfy the pressing socioeconomic need to improve quality of life of the disabled subjects. 29. Syntopic taxa in the Sylvia cantillans species complex.

Abstract

The article focuses on a study which examines the reproductive isolation or compatibility levels among syntopic taxa in the Sylvia cantillans species in the mainland sites of Italy. The study provides a new data on the coexistence of both taxa, and offers details on the abundance of each taxon as well as presents observations regarding the bird's interspecific behavior in the mainland areas. The study also looks into a data about the overlap between heterospecific terrotories and habitat features which offers differences on areas defended by pairs of the two taxa. Findings of the study suggest that the lack of syntopic interbreeding will result to different behavior of species.

31. Cellular Mechanisms Underlying the Interaction between Cannabinoid and Opioid System

Abstract

Recently, the presence of functional interaction between the opioid and cannabinoid system has been shown in various pharmacological responses. Although there is an increasing interest for the feasible therapeutic application of a co-administration of cannabinoids and opioids in some disorders (i.e. to manage pain, to modulate immune system and emotions) and the combined use of the two drugs by drug abusers is becoming largely diffuse, only few papers focused on cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying this interaction. This review updates the biochemical and molecular underpinnings of opioid and cannabinoid interaction, both within the central nervous system and periphery. The most convincing theory for the explanation of this reciprocal interaction involves (i) the release of opioid peptides by cannabinoids or endocannabinoids by opioids, (ii) the existence of a direct receptor-receptor interaction when the receptors are co-expressed in the same cells, and (iii) the interaction of their intracellular pathways. Finally, the cannabinoid/opioid interaction might be different in the brain rewarding networks and in those accounting for other pharmacological effects (antinociception, modulation of emotionality and cognitive behavior), as well as between the central nervous system and periphery. Further insights about the cannabinoid/opioid interaction could pave the way for new and promising therapeutic approaches.

32. Diet and trophic niche overlap of two ranid species in northern Italy

Abstract

Diet of two syntopic populations of Rana dalmatina and R. synklepton esculenta were studied in order to collect data about competition and niche overlap in relation to habitats frequented. Field observations confirm previous ecological researches and show that the former species has a short aquatic phase during the mating period; it lives in woods after breeding relatively far from water. The edible frog, on the contrary, remains near damp areas during the whole activity period. Trophic niche breadth proved greater in R. dalmatina than in R. synklepton esculenta. Niche overlap between species was low, because of the different kind of habitats frequented, while that between sexes was low in R. dalmatina, because males and females show different activity patterns during the year. On the contrary, overlap was complete in R. synklepton esculenta. No correlation was found between the size of frogs and preys. In conclusion, frogs are opportunistic predators and our results suggest that maintaining a highly diversified habitat is useful for avoiding competition between species.

34. Differences in the dimensions of diurnal and nocturnal pellets of the barn owl, Tyto alba

Abstract

Linear dimensions and weight of barn owl pellets collected at a hay-loft and at a roost-site were examined. Pellets ejected in the hayloft during nocturnal hunting activity were significantly smaller and lighter than those ejected at the roost-site during resting periods in daylight hours. This observation is in agreement with the “pelote diurne et pelote nocturne” theory suggested by Guerin (1932). Linear dimensions and weight of pellets varied from one to another season. Thus, it was suggested that the feeding tactics exhibited by barn owls may affect the content and the linear dimensions and weight of pellets; moreover, it was pointed out that further studies are necessary on pellet characteristics in habitats where barn owl faces spatial and temporal variations in the availability of its most important food resources.

Abstract

Background. Current knowledge of risk assessment in survivors of myocardial infarction is largely based on data gathered before the advent of thrombolysis. It must be determined whether and to what extent available information and proposed criteria of prognostication are applicable in the thrombolytic era. Methods and Results. We reassessed risk prediction in the 10 219 survivors of myocardial infarction with follow-up data available (ie, 98% of the total) who had been enrolled in the GISSI-2 trial, relying on a set of prespecified variables. The 3.5% 6-month all-cause mortality rate of these patients compared with the higher value of 4.6% found in the corresponding GISSI-1 cohort, originally allocated to streptokinase therapy, indicates a 24% reduction in postdischarge 6-month mortality. On multivariate analysis (Cox model), the following variables were predictors of 6-month all-cause mortality: ineligibility for exercise test for both cardiac (relative risk [RR], 3.30; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.36-4.62) and noncardiac reasons (RR, 3.28; 95% CI, 2.23-4.72), early left ventricular failure (RR, 2.41; 95% Cl, 1.87-3.09), echocardiographic evidence of recovery phase left ventricular dysfunction (RR, 2.30; 95% CI, 1.78-2.98), advanced (more than 70 years) age (RR, 1.81; 95% Cl, 1.43 -2.30), electrical instability (ie, frequent and/or complex ventricular arrhythmias) (RR, 1.70; 95% Cl, 1.32-2.19), late left ventricular failure (RR, 1.54; 95% Cl, 1.17-2.03), previous myocardial infarction (RR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.14-1.89), and a history of treated hypertension (RR, 1.32; 95% Cl, 1.05-1.65). Early post-myocardial infarction angina, a positive exercise test, female sex, history of angina, history of insulin-dependent diabetes, and anterior site of myocardial infarction were not risk predictors. On further multivariate analysis, performed on 8315 patients with the echocardiographic indicator of left ventricular dysfunction available, only previous myocardial infarction was not retained as an independent risk predictor. Conclusions. A decline in 6-month mortality of myocardial infarction survivors, seen within 6 hours of symptom onset, has been observed in recent years. Ineligibility for exercise test, early left ventricular failure, and recovery-phase left ventricular dysfunction are the most powerful (RR, >2) predictors of 6-month mortality among patients recovering from myocardial infarction after thrombolysis. Qualitative variables reflecting residual myocardial ischemia do not appear to be risk predictors. The lack of an independent adverse influence of early post-myocardial infarction angina on 6-month survival represents a major difference between this study and those of the prethrombolytic era.

Abstract

Few data are available on childhood Helicobacter pylori gastritis and its relation to age. We investigated pathologic changes in gastric mucosa of children and adults of different age. Materials and Methods: Gastric mucosa specimens of 74 children (age range 1-18 years) were compared with those of 51 adults (age range, 2970). All had H. pylori gastritis without peptic ulcer. Morphologic analysis according to the Updated Sydney System and morphometric analysis to determine inflammatory cell the density (cell/mm2) were performed. Results: Pangastritis was less frequent in children (92% vs. 100% in adults, p = 0.03) and morphologic scores were significantly lower in children than in adults (4 vs. 6, p = 0.0002 in the antrum; 4 vs. 7, p = 0.000 in the corpus). Children had lower density of all cell types, and lower frequency of neutrophils' infiltration than adults in the corpus (54% vs. 78%, p < 0.009). In both groups a significant correlation was found between morphologic scores and neutrophils' density in the antrum (r = 0.608, p < 0.0001 in children; r = 0.881, p < 0.0001 in adults) and in the corpus (r = 0.780, p < 0.0001 in children; r = 0.908, p < 0.0001 in adults). Atrophic gastritis (4%) and intestinal metaplasia (1%) were exceptional in children and significantly more frequent in adults. Conclusions: Inflammation in childhood H. pylori gastritis is milder than in adults because of lower neutrophil prevalence and density in gastric mucosa. Pangastritis is less frequent in children but a constant finding in adults. Atrophy and intestinal metaplasia are rare in childhood gastritis. There is a good correlation between morphologic scores and morphometric evaluation of H. pylori gastritis both in children and adults. Abstract

Histological criteria for the diagnosis of reflux esophagitis include basal zone hyperplasia, stromal papillae elongation, and inflammatory infiltrate. However, endoscopic esophageal biopsy specimens may include little or no lamina propria. Intraepithelial T lymphocytes, seen in hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections as cells with irregular nuclear contours (CINC), may have a higher density in children with esophagitis. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of a numerical score built up by grading the "classical" parameters and its correlation with CINC density in grasp biopsy specimens obtained from children undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy with and without esophagitis. We analyzed esophageal biopsy specimens from 349 children (median age, 5 years) subdivided in 4 groups according to the previous routine histology report: group 1, 144 children with esophagitis; group 2, 65 controls; group 3, 51 children with dubious esophagitis; and group 4, 75 children with esophagitis on endoscopy but a normal histology report. A numerical value was assigned to each parameter; the sum of these values represented the histological score. We also evaluated intraepithelial CINC density (ie, number of CINC per high-power field). We separately analyzed histological sections with and without lamina propria. For both total score and for CINC density, we calculated a cutoff using a receiver operating characteristic curve. Cutoffs of 6 for score and of 4 for CINC density provided the best sensitivity and specificity. Sensitivity of the histological score was better in biopsy specimens containing lamina propria (94%) than in those without lamina propria (4%). Sensitivity of CINC density was satisfactory in both specimens with (78%) and without (75%) lamina propria. Specificity was satisfactory for both parameters. In conclusion, when lamina propria was present in sections of endoscopic esophageal biopsy specimens, histological score provided a better diagnostic accuracy for the diagnosis of esophagitis. However, when no lamina propria was present, as was the case in 67% of our children, CINC density had better sensitivity. In addition, this latter parameter showed esophageal mucosa damage in 34% of previously dubious cases or cases with esophagitis at endoscopy but a previous routine histology report of normal mucosa.

Abstract

High-resolution electrocardiography has been used as a non-invasive method for the study of delayed potentials in order to evaluate the risk of the onset of ventricular arrhythmia first in ischaemic cardiopathy and then in various cardiopathies, generally using XYZ orthogonal derivations. The aim of this study was to compare the results obtained with those using standard precordial leads, in particular V4 and V6 leads. A group of 28 patients, males and females, aged between 15 and 55 years of age, was examined. All patients were suffering from different cardiopathies. Subjects with delayed right and left ventricular activation on the surface ECG tracing were excluded from the study. A 60-200 Hertz bandpass filter and time averaging of 300 consecutive complexes were used to analyse tracings. Dual recordings were performed for each patient. The following parameters were examined: total duration of filtered QRS complex and root-mean-square voltage of potentials in the last 40 msec of filtered QRS (RMS). In particular, the comparison between RMS using Frank's method and those obtained using V4 and V6 precordial leads provided a coefficient of correlation of r = 0.91 with p < 0.001 and r = 0.92 with p < 0.001 respectively, and the comparison between QRS obtained using the same method and that obtained using V4-V6 precordial leads gave a coefficient of correlation of R = 0.80, p < 0.001 and r = 0.77 and p < 0.001 respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract

We have studied with the echocardiography M-Mode, 2-D, Doppler three groups of 15 subjects for testing the presence of cardiac abnormalities probably related to primary collagen defect in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) The first group was made up of patients with ADPKD and normal renal function, the second of patients with ADPKD in hemodialysis (HD), the last one of patients in HD for other renal disease. In the first group we found no cardiovascular abnormalities while we found an increased incidence of valvular disease (p = 0.016) in patients with ADPKD in HD and an increased incidence in valvular disease (p = 0.016) and left atrial dilatation (p = 0.006) in patients in HD for different renal disease. When we estimated the cases on the ground of dialytic age uncorrelated with the initial renal disease, only the incidence of valvular calcifications was increased in patients on HD more than 3 years (p = 0.034). In our group of patients the echocardiographic abnormalities seem to be related more to uremic cardiomyopathy even if we cannot deny the existence of primary cardiac disease in patients with ADPKD.

42. [Late potentials in patients with prolapse of the mitral valve].

Abstract

Recently published reports have highlighted the presence of a high incidence of late potentials in patients with mitral valve prolapse. In order to verify this observation 29 patients suffering from this pathology were studied using high-resolution electrocardiography. Late potentials were present in 24% of patients with mitral valve prolapse in comparison to 5% of control subjects (p less than 0.05); no correlation was found however in patients with mitral valve prolapse between the presence of late potentials and Holter's ventricular hyperkinetic tachycardia. At a follow-up after 16 +/- 4 months no patient presented persistent ventricular tachycardia or sudden death. The presence of late potentials might be yet symptom of the mitral prolapse syndrome whose prognostic role, although not yet clear, does not appear to represent a negative factor in relation to major tachycardia attacks.

Abstract

We mechanocardiographically evaluated 50 patients with acute myocardial infarction, invasively monitored by Swan-Ganz catheters, in order to assess if mechanocardiography could provide reliable hemodynamic informations. The last 25 subjects were also studied by pulsed Doppler echocardiography. Our results confirm the high precision of apexcardiography in assessing mean pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (r = 0.91) while Doppler echocardiography proved itself better than mechanocardiography in assessing cardiac output (r = 0.82 vs r = 0.78). Moreover, Doppler echocardiography allowed a good estimation of mean pulmonary artery pressure (r = 0.81) which cannot be assessed by other noninvasive methods. However, we could not find any clinically useful relationship between Doppler mitralic flow characteristics and mean pulmonary capillary wedge pressure. Therefore noninvasive methods could represent a valid alternative to right heart catheterization provided that an integrated Doppler echocardiographic and mechanocardiographic approach is used.

Abstract

We calculated the QRS score using both the simplified Selvester's method and the Hills' one, extended to the 12 standard leads, from the electrocardiograms registered on the fifth and thirtieth day from the ischemic event from 50 infarcted patients whose radionuclide left ventricular ejection fraction was known. The analysis of our results showed a very good correlation existing between the early and the late scores (r = 0.91 Hillis's method) as well as the equivalence of the two methods as witnessed by a correlation coefficient of 0.86 on the fifth day electrocardiogram and of 0.84 on the thirtieth day E.C.G. However the correlation between QRS score and left ventricular ejection fraction was quite weak ranging from -0.36 to -0.48 depending upon the method and the moment selected for the acquisition of the data. Even the attempt to correctly select patients with a higher risk identifying a QRS score able to predict a reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (i.e. less than 40%) failed because of the low sensitivity and specificity of the method. We therefore believe that the QRS score or, at least the simplified one, is not useful to assess the residual left ventricular function after a myocardial infarction and its use should be reduced to the evaluation of the infarct size.

Abstract

Two cases of hypothermia in the elderly are described. The different clinical evolution shows how the concurrent presence of Diabetes Mellitus can be considered as an adverse prognostic factor. It is also confirmed that the Osborn's wave electrocardiographic presence, given up a specific and pathognomonic diagnostic parameter in this disease. The observation that the electrocardiographic J wave can regress after body's temperature normalization suggests the hypothesis that this wave reflects reversible delay of depolarization, or early repolarization.
