Abstract

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in research on hydrogen due to the urgent need to move away from carbon-intensive energy sources. This transition highlights the critical role of hydrogen storage technology, where hydrogen tanks are crucial for achieving cleaner energy solutions. This paper aims to provide a general overview of hydrogen treatment from a mechanical viewpoint, and to create a comprehensive review that integrates the concepts of hydrogen safety and storage. This study explores the potential of hydrogen applications as a clean energy alternative and their role in various sectors, including industry, automotive, aerospace, and marine fields. The review also discusses design technologies, safety measures, material improvements, social impacts, and the regulatory landscape of hydrogen storage tanks and safety technology. This work provides a historical literature review up to 2014 and a systematic literature review from 2014 to the present to fill the gap between hydrogen storage and safety. In particular, a fundamental feature of this work is leveraging systematic procedural techniques for performing an unbiased review study to offer a detailed analysis of contemporary advancements. This innovative approach differs significantly from conventional review methods, since it involves a replicable, scientific, and transparent process, which culminates in minimizing bias and allows for highlighting the fundamental issues about the topics of interest and the main conclusions of the experts in the field of reference. The systematic approach employed in the paper was used to analyze 55 scientific articles, resulting in the identification of six primary categories. The key findings of this review work underline the need for improved materials, enhanced safety protocols, and robust infrastructure to support hydrogen adoption. More importantly, one of the fundamental results of the present review analysis is pinpointing the central role that composite materials will play during the transition toward hydrogen applications based on thin-walled industrial vessels. Future research directions are also proposed in the paper, thereby emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to overcome existing challenges and facilitate the safe and efficient use of hydrogen. Abstract

Following the COVID-19 outbreak, the redesign of an emergency mechanical pulmonary ventilator that is cheap and easily portable became necessary in several contexts, such as emergency hotspots and environments with poor resources. To address this important issue, a general multibody approach is employed in this paper to develop a reciprocating mechanism suitable for retrofitting the existing manual mechanical ventilators through computer-aided engineering tools. By analyzing various basic articulated mechanisms typically found in engineering mechanics, a prototype is created and reproduced in a three-dimensional environment using SOLIDWORKS's CAD software. Subsequently, a high-fidelity mechanical model is developed starting from the CAD geometry and employing the SIMSCAPE MULTIBODY software, an extension of the MATLAB family of programs that can effectively and efficiently perform kinematic and dynamic simulations of the mechanism of interest. As discussed in the paper, by carrying out numerous numerical experiments, the virtual simulations predict several fundamental medical parameters, such as the airflow introduced into patients, the respiratory rate, and the respiratory ratio.

Abstract

This paper addresses the phenomenon of sloshing and the issues that arise during liquid handling at visual inspection stations. The pharmaceutical industry, recently put under pressure by the pandemic, has long adopted modular solutions consisting mainly of robotic islands. This work focuses on a visual inspection island for glass vials and ampules called VRU. This machine uses robotic arms to optimize the inspection process and enables automated control of a wide range of products using image recognition techniques and AI algorithms. However, the handling of containers in the presence of liquids requires special precautions to avoid the occurrence of bubbles inside the fluid that can prevent the cameras from correctly capturing any defects present. The banal solution involves a drastic reduction in the speeds and accelerations to which the liquids are subjected. However, using appropriate techniques makes it possible to achieve performance values similar to those obtainable when manipulating solid materials. The developed algorithms were tested using multibody simulations in the Mathworks Simscape environment and then validated using a six-axis Fanuc robot. In this study, however, the analysis conducted aimed to determine the correlations between trajectories, laws of motion, and sloshing in containers handled at high speed in industrial applications. In this study a multibody model was developed using a CFD analysis. The container consisted of a glass vial for pharmaceutical uses containing a liquid inside. The results obtained from the CFD analysis allowed us to calibrate the multibody model for the next phase of optimization of the laws of motion to be followed by the manipulator. 42. A Systematic Computational and Experimental Study of the Principal Data-Driven Identification Procedures. Part I: Analytical Methods and Computational Algorithms

Abstract

This paper is the first part of a two-part research work aimed at performing a systematic computationaland experimental analysis of the principal data-driven identification procedures based on the Observer/Kalman FilterIdentification Methods (OKID) and the Numerical Algorithms for Subspace State-Space System Identification (N4SID).Considering the approach proposed in this work, the state-space model of a mechanical system can be identified withthe OKID and N4SID methods. Additionally, the second-order configuration-space dynamical model of the mechanical system of interest can be estimated with the MKR (Mass, Stiffness, and Damping matrices) and PDC (ProportionalDamping Coefficients) techniques. In particular, this first paper concentrates on the description of the fundamentalanalytical methods and computational algorithms employed in this study. In this investigation, numerical and experimental analyses of two fundamental time-domain system identification techniques are performed. To this end,the main variants of the OKID and the N4SID methods are examined in this study. These two families of numerical methods allow for identifying a first-order state-space model of a given dynamical system by directly startingfrom the time-domain experimental data measured in input and output to the system of interest. The basic stepsof the system identification numerical procedures mentioned before are described in detail in the paper. As discussed in the manuscript, from the identified first-order state-space dynamical models obtained using the OKID andN4SID methods, a second-order configuration-space mechanical model of the dynamic system under considerationcan be subsequently obtained by employing another identification algorithm described in this work and referred to asthe MKR method. Furthermore, by using the second-order dynamical model obtained from experimental data, andconsidering the hypothesis of proportional damping, an effective technique referred to as the PDC method is alsointroduced in this investigation to calculate an improved estimation of the identified damping coefficients. In thisinvestigation, a numerical and experimental comparison between the OKID methods and the N4SID algorithms isproposed. Both families of methodologies allow for performing the time-domain state-space system identification,namely, they lead to an estimation of the state, input influence, output influence, and direct transmission matricesthat define the dynamic behavior of a mechanical system. Additionally, a least-square approach based on the PDCmethod is employed in this work for reconstructing an improved estimation of the damping matrix starting froma triplet of estimated mass, stiffness, and damping matrices of a linear dynamical system obtained using the MKRidentification procedure. The mathematical background thoroughly analyzed in this first research work serves topave the way for the applications presented and discussed in the second research paper.

43. A Systematic Computational and Experimental Study of the Principal Data-Driven Identification Procedures. Part II: Numerical Analysis and Experimental Testing

Abstract

This paper is the second part of a two-part research work intended at realizing a systematic computational and experimental analysis of the principal data-driven identification procedures based on the Observer/Kalman Filter Identification Methods (OKID) and the Numerical Algorithms for Subspace State-Space System Identification (N4SID). More specifically, this second paper treats the presentation of the numerical analysis and the experimental testing carried out in this study. To perform a systematic comparison, the identification methods mentioned before are implemented in a general-purpose computer program developed in the MATLAB computational environment. To this end, a simple two-degrees-of-freedom dynamical model of a vibrating mechanical system is considered first as a demonstrative example. The demonstrative example is used to carry out a numerical analysis of the performance of the computational methods of interest for this investigation. Subsequently, an experimental analysis is carried out focusing on a three-dimensional structure that vibrates under the effect of an external source of impulsive excitation. To perform a thorough analysis, the flexible structure employed as an experimental case study is modeled starting from its CAD geometric model and assuming different levels of complexity, which range from a simple three-degrees-of-freedom lumped parameter model to a relatively more complex linear finite element model. In the paper, the mechanical models of the structural system considered as illustrative examples are principally employed for comparing the results arising from the modal analysis. The computational and experimental analysis of these structural models turned out to be useful to trace guidelines for evaluating the effectiveness and the efficiency of the numerical and experimental results obtained from the identification process. In this study, a numerical and experimental analysis of the OKID algorithms and the N4SID methods is developed. Both classes of techniques enable the time-domain state-space system identification, that is, they construct an estimation of the state, input influence, output influence, and direct transmission matrices which characterize the dynamic properties of a mechanical system. The present investigation demonstrates that, if properly tuned, both the OKID methods and the N4SID algorithms lead to consistent numerical and experimental results, even in the case when the input-output measurements used for performing the identification procedure are affected by a certain degree of noise. The numerical and experimental results found in this second part of the research work confirmed the efficacy of the time-domain system identification methodologies described in the first part of the paper.
