Abstract

International audience; In this work, electromechanical coupling factor, K2, and Temperature Coefficient of Frequency (TCF) of Bulk Acoustic Wave (BAW) resonators based on high aspect ratio ridge structures in 42°Y-X LiTaO3 (LT) and Z-cut LT single crystals with different Li stoichiometries were studied experimentally, analytically and by combined finite element / boundary element analysis. Initially, analytical analysis was carried out to determine the contribution of different elastic constants in thickness field excitation of shear modes in high aspect ratio ridge structures. The analysis shows shear modes that are dependent on C44 in ridge resonators based on 42°Y-X and Z-cut LT crystals. However, the measured frequency response of such structures exhibited many spurious resonances, making difficult the direct extraction of acoustical parameters. A fitting procedure that allows taking into account several resonances occurring simultaneously in a restricted frequency range was used. Higher K2 and more positive temperature dependence of frequency were determined for ridge structures in nearly stoichiometric crystals compared to those of equivalent structures in congruent ones.

Abstract

International audience; Surface acoustic waves have been studied for more than 50 years and are mainly used as passive components (resonators, frequency filters, sensors, etc.) for signal processing, and more specifically. As demonstrated by Bao et al, surface acoustic wave devices can operate without on-board power supply using a dedicated interrogation unit. Using appropriate design considerations, these devices are sensitive to external conditions including temperature, pressure, strain or chemical/biological mass loading. Therefore, the unique characteristics of such devices allows for an effective implementation providing new opportunities for remote control of physical and chemical parameters.

International audience; We present LiNbO3 Bragg gratings with an aspect ratio of 8 and beyond. The gratings are integrated in ridge waveguides by focused ion beam (FIB) milling. The preliminary optical characterizations confirm that the gratings behave as reflectors.

Abstract

International audience; We report on three approaches to achieve Bragg Gratings structures (BGs) on X-cut lithium niobate substrates. The first method relies on Reactive Ionic Etching with fluorine gases. The second process is based on Focused Ion Beam milling (FIB) to etch BGs in classical optical waveguides and the last one combines the use of lateral FIB etching and deep-etched ridge optical waveguides defined by "optical grade dicing". Optical characterizations will be performed on each structure.

Abstract

The constant improvement of industrial needs to face modern telecommunication challenges leads to the development of novel transducer principles as alternatives to SAW and BAW solutions. The main technological limits of SAW (short-circuit between electrodes) and BAW (precise thickness control) solutions can be overcome by a new kind of transducer based on periodically poled ferroelectric substrate. The approach proposed in this paper exploits a ridge structure combined with a periodically poled transducer (PPT), allowing for the excitation of highly coupled modes unlike previously published results on planar PPTs. High-aspect-ratio ridges showing micrometer dimensions are achieved by dicing PPT plates with a diamond-tipped saw. An adapted metallization is achieved to excite acoustic modes exhibiting electromechanical coupling in excess of 15% with phase velocities up to 10 000 m?s?1. Theoretical predictions show that these figures may reach values up to 20% and 18 000 m?s?1, respectively, using an appropriate design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

28. In-band pumping of Tm:LiYF 4 channel waveguide: a power scaling strategy for ∼2  μm waveguide lasers.

Abstract

We report on a novel power scaling strategy for thulium waveguide (WG) lasers relying on in-band pumping by high-brightness Raman fiber lasers (RFLs) and the use of liquid-phase-epitaxy-grown fluoride crystalline thin films for better thermal management. Thulium channel WGs are produced by microstructuring the Tm 3+ :LiYF 4 /LiYF 4 epitaxies via diamond-saw dicing. They are pumped by a RFL based on an erbium master oscillator power amplifier and a GeO 2 -doped silica fiber and emit polarized output at 1679 nm. A CW in-band-pumped (H 6 3→F 4 3) Tm 3+ :LiYF 4 WG laser generates up to 2.05 W of a linearly polarized single-transverse-mode output at 1881 nm with a slope efficiency of 78.3% and a laser threshold of only 12 mW (versus the absorbed pump power).

29. Watt-level Tm:LiYF 4 channel waveguide laser produced by diamond saw dicing.

Abstract

Low-loss surface channel waveguides with a cross-section of 30 × 30 μm 2 are produced by diamond saw dicing of 6.2 at.% Tm 3+ , 3.5 at.% Gd 3+ :LiYF 4 films grown by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) on (001)-oriented bulk undoped LiYF 4 substrates. Pumped by a Ti:Sapphire laser at 783 nm, a continuous-wave Tm:LiYF 4 waveguide laser generated 1.30 W at 1880 nm (for π-polarization) with a slope efficiency of 80% with respect to the absorbed pump power. The laser threshold was at 80 mW. The waveguide morphology was studied revealing low roughness (3 ± 2 μm) as expressed by the propagation losses of <0.3 dB/cm. A combination of LPE and diamond saw dicing is a promising technology for multi-watt single-mode channel waveguide lasers and amplifiers.
