Spiradiclis scorpiura (Rubiaceae), a new calcareous species found in Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. This new species is similar to S. coccinea, S. scabrida, and S. purpureocaerulea in having pubescent stems and subglobose capsules, but it is easily distinguished by its cincinnous inflorescence and its triangular, 1–2 mm long, pubescent bracteoles. According to the IUCN criteria, it is considered Data Deficient (DD) until more information becomes available. Photographs, an illustration, a distribution map, and a comparative table with the most similar species are provided.

Polygala spatulata Y. Nong & Run Hua Jiang (sect. Pseudosemeiocardium, Polygalaceae), a new species from a karst cave in west Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. This new species resembles Polygala isocarpa Chodat in its annual habit, terminal racemes, lamellate appendage, yellow flowers and glabrous seeds, but it can be easily distinguished by its sparsely white-pilose stem and leaf blades, spoon-shaped inner sepals, ovate outer sepals (ca. 1.5 mm) which is glandular and all persistent after anthesis, as well as its elliptic, reticulate seeds. Photographs, an illustration, a distribution map and a comparative table with the most similar species are also provided.

Spiradiclis yanii Y.Nong & L.Wu (Rubiaceae), a new species from Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. This new species is most similar to S. tomentosa, but it can be easily distinguished by being densely multicellular villous, leaves narrow elliptic or oblanceolate, apex acute or shortly acuminate, stipules 2–4, linear or linear lanceolate, 4–8 mm, densely villous, corolla tube 3 mm, sparsely pubescent inside, flower homomorphism, lobes 3–5, stamens arising at the base of the tube, stigma 2-lobed, lobes ovoid, slightly swollen, 0.2 mm. The habitat of Spiradiclis yanii is extremely fragile. Therefore, this species deserves close attention and protection.

Abstract Previous studies in small samples have identified inconsistent cortical abnormalities in major depressive disorder (MDD). Despite genetic influences on MDD and the brain, it is unclear how genetic risk for MDD is translated into spatially patterned cortical vulnerability. Here, we initially examined voxel-wise differences in cortical function and structure using the largest multi-modal MRI data from 1660 MDD patients and 1341 controls. Combined with the Allen Human Brain Atlas, we then adopted transcription-neuroimaging spatial correlation and the newly developed ensemble-based gene category enrichment analysis to identify gene categories with expression related to cortical changes in MDD. Results showed that patients had relatively circumscribed impairments in local functional properties and broadly distributed disruptions in global functional connectivity, consistently characterized by hyper-function in associative areas and hypo-function in primary regions. Moreover, the local functional alterations were correlated with genes enriched for biological functions related to MDD in general (e.g., endoplasmic reticulum stress, mitogen-activated protein kinase, histone acetylation, and DNA methylation); and the global functional connectivity changes were associated with not only MDD-general, but also brain-relevant genes (e.g., neuron, synapse, axon, glial cell, and neurotransmitters). Our findings may provide important insights into the transcriptomic signatures of regional cortical vulnerability to MDD.

Cyrtomium adenotrichum Y. Nong & R.H. Jiang (Dryopteridaceae), a new species from Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. This new species is similar to C. nephrolepioides (Christ) Copel., C. obliquum Ching & K. H. Shing ex K. H. Shing, C. sinningense Ching & K. H. Shing ex K. H. Shing and C. calcis Liang Zhang, N.T.Lu & Li Bing Zhang in having erect rhizomes, dense, leathery lamina and rounded sori, but it can be easily distinguishable by its stipe sparsely glandular, base obvious oblique, basiscopic base truncate, acroscopic base auriculate or ovate.

Background: Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) is a serious complication of radiation therapy, and it is mediated by long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). Study design and methods: Mouse lung tissues were examined using RNA-Seq and RNA-Seq libraries 72 h after the administration of 6 Gy of X-ray irradiation. The target mRNAs were functionally annotated and the target lncRNA-based miRNAs and target miRNA-based mRNAs were predicted after irradiation to establish the lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA ceRNA axis. Results: The analyses showed that relative to unirradiated controls, 323 mRNAs, 114 miRNAs, and 472 lncRNAs were significantly up-regulated following irradiation, whereas 1907 mRNAs, 77 miRNAs, and 1572 lncRNAs were significantly down-regulated following irradiation. Voltage-gated ion channels, trans-membrane receptor protein tyrosine kinases, and vascular endothelial growth factor have all been associated with dysregulated miRNA-mRNA relationships. KEGG pathway analysis of the dysregulated miRNA-mRNA targets revealed involvement in pathways associated with the hedgehog signaling pathway-fly, ErbB signaling, VEGF signaling, axon guidance, and focal adhesion. KEGG analysis of differentially expressed showed enrichment of mRNAs in primary immunodeficiency, the intestinal immune axis for IgA production, hematopoietic cell lineages, systemic lupus erythematosus, and Th1 and Th2 cell differentiation. Finally, the ceRNA network revealed that BNIP1 was a critical mRNA modulated by the most significant upregulation of lncRNA E230013L22Rik. Conclusion: In summary, the lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA ceRNA axis of RILI was constructed following irradiation in a mouse model. RNA dysregulation in the early stage of RILI may lead to severe complications at a later stage, with BNIP1 contributing to radiation-induced cellular apoptosis in RILI.

Abstract Despite concerns about overfishing and the potential impact of release programs on wild populations, our study of 3116 individuals from 13 wild populations and 2787 individuals from two cultured populations in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces spanning 2008 to 2023 reveals a relatively stable genetic diversity in Larimichthys crocea. Surprisingly, the genetic diversity of wild large yellow croaker populations has remained consistent over the years, suggesting minimal influence from population declines due to overfishing. With the exception of populations in Sansha Bay and Luoyuan Bay, no significant genetic differences were observed among wild populations, indicating a single panmictic genetic population across the East and South China seas. Notably, significant genetic differentiation exists between cultured and wild populations, suggesting a possible limited genetic adaptation of cultured‐released individuals to the wild environment. The genetic differences observed between the Sansha Bay, with its adjacent Luoyuan Bay populations, and other wild populations underscore the dual effects of habitat environment and farming activities on the genetic structure of large yellow croaker. Our findings suggest that, despite declines in population numbers due to overfishing and expands extensive cultured releases, the genetic diversity of L. crocea populations remains largely unaffected. Moreover, the L. crocea population along the Chinese coast appears to form a single panmictic population with considerable genetic diversity.

Aletris guangxiensis Y. Nong & Y. F. Huang (Nartheciaceae), a new species from Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. This new species is most similar to A. scopulorum, but it can be easily distinguished by its sparsely glandular, 5–18 cm long scape, glandular inflorescence axis, distinctly pedicellate flowers, sparsely glandular, 5–10 mm long pedicel, bract borne at base of pedicel, glabrous perianth divided to the base, strongly recurved or revolute perianth lobes and turbinate, obovoid to oblong-obovoid capsule. An identification key for 24 species and 1 hybrid of Aletris is also provided.

Abstract Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine and metabolic disorder that is common in women of reproductive age. The clinical features of PCOS include hyperandrogenemia and polycystic ovarian changes. Bailing capsule (BL), a proprietary Chinese medicine that contains fermented Cordyceps sinensis powder, has been applied to treat PCOS. However, the specific active ingredients of BL and its mechanisms of action are yet to be elucidated. Methods Initially, the effectiveness of BL on PCOS model mice was evaluated. Subsequently, the active ingredients of BL were searched in the TCMSP and TCM Systems Pharmacology databases, and their targets were predicted using Swiss Target Prediction and SEA databases. Furthermore, the GEO gene database was used to screen for differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to PCOS. Data from Gene Card, OMIM, DDT, and Drugbank databases were then combined to establish a PCOS disease gene library. Cross targets were imported into the STRING database to construct a protein–protein interaction network. In addition, GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analyses were performed using Metascape and DAVID databases and visualized using Cytoscape software and R 4.2.3. The core targets were docked with SYBYL-X software, and their expressions in PCOS mice were further verified using qPCR. Results The core active ingredients of BL were identified to be linoleyl acetate, cholesteryl palmitate, arachidonic acid, among others. Microarray data sets from four groups containing disease and normal samples were obtained from the GEO database. A total of 491 DEGs and 106 drug–disease cross genes were selected. Estrous cycle and ovarian lesions were found to be improved in PCOS model mice following BL treatment. While the levels of testosterone, progesterone, and prolactin decreased, that of estradiol increased. qPCR findings indicated that the expressions of JAK2, PPARG, PI3K, and AKT1 were upregulated, whereas those of ESR1 and IRS1 were downregulated in PCOS model mice. After the administration of BL, the expressions of associated genes were regulated. This study demonstrated that BL exerted anti-PCOS effects via PIK3CA, ESR1, AKT, PPARG, and IRS1 targets affecting PI3K-Akt signaling pathways. Discussion This research clarified the multicomponent, multitarget, and multichannel action of BL and provided a theoretical reference for further investigations on its pharmacological basis and molecular mechanisms against PCOS.

Introduction Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a clinical syndrome characterized by an abrupt decline in renal function within a few hours or days, which is associated with high morbidity and [...], The smoothened (Smo) receptor facilitates hedgehog signaling between kidney fibroblasts and tubules during acute kidney injury (AKI). Tubule-derived hedgehog is protective in AKI, but the role of fibroblast-selective Smo is unclear. Here, we report that Smo-specific ablation in fibroblasts reduced tubular cell apoptosis and inflammation, enhanced perivascular mesenchymal cell activities, and preserved kidney function after AKI. Global proteomics of these kidneys identified extracellular matrix proteins, and nidogen-1 glycoprotein in particular, as key response markers to AKI. Intriguingly, Smo was bound to nidogen-1 in cells, suggesting that loss of Smo could affect nidogen-1 accessibility. Phosphoproteomics revealed that the 'AKI protector' Wnt signaling pathway was activated in these kidneys. Mechanistically, nidogen-1 interacted with integrin [beta]1 to induce Wnt in tubules to mitigate AKI. Altogether, our results support that fibroblastselective Smo dictates AKI fate through cell-matrix interactions, including nidogen-1, and offers a robust resource and path to further dissect AKI pathogenesis.

Lysimachia cavicola (Subgen. Idiophyton, Primulaceae), a new species from Guangxi, China, is here described and illustrated based on morphological data. Although it shares similarities with L. microcarpa, L. fooningensis, and L. capillipes, there are distinguishing characteristics that set it apart. These include erect stems either solitary or in clusters of 1 to 2, herbaceous, terete, and densely glandular hairy. The leaves are either ovate or elliptical lanceolate, with inconspicuously reticulate veins. The petiole measures 2–4 mm in length covered with minute glandular hairy. The corolla is deeply parted, measuring 6–8 mm in length, with narrowly elliptic or narrowly oblong lobes that are 1–2 mm wide. The capsule is globose, measuring 2–3 × 2–3 mm, and possesses a chalky, brittle texture, which splits into 5-valved segments. The calyx of the plant appears yellowish-white during fruiting. This newly discovered species is endemic to limestone areas in Fengshan County, Guangxi, China.

Walsura guangxiensis (Meliaceae), a new species from Guangxi, China, is here described and illustrated. The new species is easily distinguishable from the other two Chinese members of the genus by its petals being pale yellow, filaments being connate into tubes above the middle, the berry being oval and glabrous. An identification key of Walsura for 17 species is also provided.

Background: Previous studies have documented important roles for microRNA-147 (miR-147) in inflammation, radiation-induced injury, cancer, and a range of other diseases. Murine lungs exhibit high levels of miRNA, mRNA, and lncRNA expression. However, very little research to date has focused on the lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks associated with miR-147, and the regulation of lncRNAs and miRNAs in this setting remains poorly understood.Methods: After establishing a miR-147−/− model mouse, samples of lung tissue were harvested for RNA-sequencing, and differentially expressed lncRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs were identified. The miRNA targets of these lncRNAs and the identified miRNAs were first overlapped to facilitate the prediction of target mRNAs, with analyses then examining the overlap between these targets and mRNAs that were differentially expressed. Then, these target mRNAs were subjected to pathway enrichment analyses. These results were ultimately used to establish a miR-147-related ceRNA network.Results: Relative to wild-type mice, the lungs of miR-147−/− mice exhibited 91, 43, and 71 significantly upregulated lncRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs, respectively, together with 114, 31, and 156 that were significantly downregulated. The lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA network established based on these results led to the identification of Kcnh6 as a differentially expressed hub gene candidate and enabled the identification of a range of regulatory relationships. KEGG pathway enrichment showed that the mRNA targets of differentially expressed lncRNAs and miRNAs in the mice were associated with tumor-related signaling, endometrial cancer, bladder cancer, and ErbB signaling.Conclusion: These results suggest that the identified ceRNA network in miR-147−/− mice shapes tumor-associated signaling activity, with miR-147 potentially regulating various lncRNAs and miRNAs through Kcnh6, ultimately influencing tumorigenesis. Future studies of the lncRNA, miRNA, and mRNA regulatory targets shown to be associated with miR-147 in the present study may ultimately lead to the identification of novel clinically relevant targets through which miR-147 shapes the pathogenesis of cancer and other diseases.

Nephrotic syndrome (NS) had serious complications due to hypercoagulable state in both various venous and arteries which could lead thromboembolic events. we described a case of a 41-year-old man who presented with pulmonary artery thrombosis and was diagnosed with NS. Early diagnosis and management of nephrotic syndrome may prevent the occurrence of venous thromboembolism (VTE).

As an important radioactive tracer, 14C has been widely used in many fields, such as biomedicine, agriculture, geology, environment etc, due to its ability to reveal the distribution, metabolic mechanism and migration path of the substances. In recent years, the demand for 14C-labeled compounds has continued to grow, and its application field has been expanded. This paper summarizes the sources, preparation, separation and purification methods of 14C isotopes. Meanwhile, this paper reviews the preparation, structural identification and application in related research fields of 14C labeled compounds, and emphatically discussed the development status and trend of 14C isotope separation and purification technology. It is hoped that recyclable utilization of 14C resources can be realized with solving the pollution of 14C emissions, which will further promote the development of 14C application.
