11. Multi-layer nanoarrays sandwiched by anodized aluminium oxide membranes: an approach to an inexpensive, reproducible, highly sensitive SERS substrate

Abstract

A large-scale sub-5 nm nanofabrication technique is developed based on double layer anodized aluminium oxide (AAO) porous membrane masking. This technique also provides a facile route to form multilayer nano-arrays (metal nanoarrays sandwiched by AAO membranes), which is very challenging for other techniques. Normally the AAO mask has to be sacrificed, yet in this work it is preserved as a part of the nanostructure. The preserved AAO layers as the support for the second/third layer of the metal arrays provide a high-refractive index background for the multilayer metal arrays. This background concentrates the local E-field more significantly and results in a much higher Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) signal than single layer metal arrays. This technique may lead to the advent of an inexpensive, reproducible, highly sensitive SERS substrate. Moreover, the physical essence of the plasmonic enhancement is unveiled by finite element method based numerical simulations. Enhancements from the gaps and the multilayer nanostructure agree very well with the experiments. The calculated layer-by-layer electric field distribution determines the contribution from different layers and provides more insights into the 3D textured structure.

14. Inkjet-Printing Ti3C2Tx MXene Nanosheet-Based Metamaterials for Terahertz Absorption.

Abstract

Metamaterials are man-made, subwavelength structures with periodic unit cells that can regulate the propagation of electromagnetic waves via changing the structure of the metamaterial. However, subject to processing technology and device size problems, most of the flexible metamaterials working in the terahertz band stay in the theoretical model. Here, a bendable MXene based metamaterial absorber is prepared through a rapid, low-cost, reproducible, and stable inkjet-printing method. The prepared absorber can achieve selective absorption in a specific frequency band and exhibit 99.4% absorption at 1.07 THz. By changing the structural parameters of the metamaterial absorber, the shift of the absorption peaks and broadening of the absorption bandwidth can be realized. Inkjet-printing technology enables the rapid preparation of this metamaterial absorber with good reproducibility. Furthermore, based on the printed metamaterials, the theoretical model is constructed using CST Studio Suite, with good agreement between the simulation results and the experimental results. Therefore, the flexible MXene nanosheet-based metamaterial absorber prepared by inkjet-printing technology shows its great potential in the selective absorption of the THz wave for next-generation communication devices. Abstract

Stretchable, self‐healing, and breathable skin‐biomimetic‐sensing iontronics play an important role in human physiological signal monitoring and human–computer interaction. However, previous studies have focused on the mimicking of skin tactile sensing (pressure, strain, and temperature), and the development of more functionalities is necessary. To this end, a superior humidity‐sensitive ionic skin is developed based on a self‐healing, stretchable, breathable, and biocompatible polyvinyl alcohol–cellulose nanofibers organohydrogel film, showing a pronounced thickness‐dependent humidity‐sensing performance. The as‐prepared 62.47‐μm‐thick organohydrogel film exhibits a high response (25,000%) to 98% RH, excellent repeatability, and long‐term stability (120 days). Moreover, this ionic skin has excellent resistance to large mechanical deformation and damage, and the worn‐out material can still retain its humidity‐sensing capabilities after self‐repair. Humidity‐sensing mechanism studies show that the induced response is mainly related to the increase of proton mobility and interfacial charge transport efficiency after water adsorption. The superior humidity responsiveness is attributed to the reduced thickness and the increased specific surface area of the organohydrogel film, allowing real‐time recording of physiological signals. Notably, by combining with a self‐designed printed circuit board, a continuous and wireless respiration monitoring system is developed, presenting its great potential in wearable and biomedical electronics.
