The relationship between birds (Aves) and hard ticks (Ixodidae) was analyzed for the 386 of 725 tick extant species whose larva, nymph and adults are known as well as their natural hosts. A total of 136 (54 Prostriata= Ixodes, 82 Metastriata= all other genera) are frequently found on Aves, but only 32 species (1 associated with Palaeognathae, 31 with Neognathae) have all parasitic stages feeding on birds: 25 Ixodes (19% of the species analyzed for this genus), 6 Haemaphysalis (7%) and 1 species of Amblyomma (2%). The species of Amblyomma feeds on marine birds (MB), the six Haemaphysalis are parasites of non-marine birds (NMB), and 14 of the 25 Ixodes feed on NMB, one feeds on NMB and MB, and ten on MB. The Australasian Ixodes + I. uriae clade probably originated at an uncertain time from the late Triassic to the early Cretaceous. It is speculated that Prostriata first hosts were Gondwanan theropod dinosaurs in an undetermined place before Pangaea break up; alternatively, if ancestral monotromes were involved in its evolution an Australasian origin of Prostriata seems plausible. As for Prostriata the Motherland of Ixodida is probably Gondwana. RESUMEN. Aves y garrapatas duras (Ixodidae), con discusión sobre hipótesis sobre evolución de las garrapatas. En esta revisión se analizó la relación entre aves y garrapatas duras (Ixodidae) para las 386 de 725 especies de garrapatas que utilizan aves como hospedadores para larvas, ninfas y adultos. Un total de 136 especies (54 Prostriata= Ixodes, 82 Metastriata= restantes géneros) son frecuentemente encontradas sobre aves, pero solo 32 especies (1 asociada con Palaeognathae, 31 con Neognathae) tienen ciclos donde todos los estadios se alimentan sobre aves: 25 Ixodes (19% de las especies analizadas para este género), 6 Haemaphysalis (7% del total) y 1 especie de Amblyomma (2% del total). A review of the ticks (Acari, Ixodida) of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, was completed as a step towards a definitive list (currently indicated as 12) of such species, their hosts and distribution. The ticks: Argas miniatus (poultry), Ixodes loricatus (opossums), Amblyomma aureolatum (dogs), A. calcaratum (anteaters), A. cooperi (capybaras), A. nodosum (anteaters), A. tigrinum (dogs) (Neotropical) and Rhipicephalus sanguineus (dogs) (introduced, cosmopolitan, Afrotropical) were confirmed as present, in addition to the predominant, Boophilus microplus (cattle) (introduced, pan-tropical, Oriental). Of the further 18 species thus far reported in the literature as present in the state, but unavailable for examination: only Ornithodoros brasiliensis (humans and their habitations) (Neotropical), Ixodes affinis (deer) (Nearctic/Neotropical) and I. auritulus (birds) (Nearctic/Neotropical/Afrotropical/ Australasian) are considered likely; 13 species would benefit from corroborative local data but the majority appear unlikely; reports of A. maculatum (Nearctic/Neotropical, but circum-Caribbean) are considered erroneous; the validity of A. fuscum is in doubt. The very recent, first known report of the tropical Anocentor nitens (horses)(Nearctic/Neotropical), but still apparent absence of the tropical A. cajennense (catholic) (Nearctic/Neotropical) and the sub-tropical/temperate Ixodes pararicinus (cattle) (Neotropical) in Rio Grande do Sul are important for considerations on their current biogeographical distribution and its dynamics in South America. The state has relatively long established, introduced ("exotic"), Old World tick species (B. microplus, R. sanguineus) that continue to represent significant pests and disease vectors to their traditional, introduced domestic animal hosts, cattle and urban dogs. There are also indigenous, New World ticks (A. miniatus, O. brasiliensis, A. aureolatum, A. nitens), as both long established and possibly newly locally introduced species in the state, that should be considered as potential and emergent pests and pathogen vectors to humans and their more recently acquired, introduced domestic animal hosts; rural poultry, dogs and horses.

Ixodes chacoensis n. sp. is described based on males, females, nymphs and larvae collected from vegetation, ungulates and passerine birds in northeastern Argentina. Ixodes affinis Neumann, 1899 is redescribed based on the original type specimens (females) from Leopardus pardalis, and from recently collected specimens from Costa Rica. Ixodes keiransi n. sp., previously treated as North American populations of Ixodes affinis, is described based on males and females from carnivores and ungulates from the southeastern United States. Concatenated total evidence phylogenetics based on combined DNA sequence analyses from mitochondrial genes (12SrDNA, 16SrDNA and COI) and a nuclear gene (ITS2) corroborate the recognition of these species.

This work aimed to determine if the tick species, Amblyomma sculptum and Amblyomma tonelliae, hybridize along their contact zones in Argentina. Free-living adults and nymphs of A. sculptum and A. tonelliae were collected in seven sampling locations of northern Argentina. In four of them, the two species occur in parapatry (possible hybrid zone) whereas in the other three sites, only one species is known to occur. A total of 65 A. sculptum and 65 A. tonelliae from both, allopatric and parapatric populations, were analysed. The nuclear (ITS2) and mitochondrial (COI and 12SrDNA) gene sequences of each tick were amplified and analysed to verify whether or not they could reveal the presence of hybrids among the parapatric samples. No morphological and molecular evidence was found to support the hypothesis of ongoing natural hybridization. Intrinsic postzygotic barriers may be the cause of lack of gene flow between the two species in areas of co-ocurrence. The hard tick family Ixodidae currently comprises 762 species worldwide, but an analysis of the occurrence of these species in the world´s countries, territories, zoogeographic regions (Afrotropical, Australasian, Nearctic, Neotropical, Oriental, Palearctic) and remote islands has not been attempted since 2009. Here, we present and critically discuss distributional data for all currently accepted ixodid species known from 226 countries and territories in six zoogeographic realms. This summary of ixodid tick biogeography should prove to be a valuable reference for biologists interested in ticks as organisms as well as specialists focusing on tick-borne diseases. Data for all species treated here were derived from a literature search that ended on March 31, 2022.

Background: This study aims to capture how ticks of the genus Ixodes gained their hosts using network constructs. We propose two alternative hypotheses, namely, an ecological background (ticks and hosts sharing environmentally available conditions) and a phylogenetic one, in which both partners co-evolved, adapting to existing environmental conditions after the association took place., Methods: We used network constructs linking all the known pairs of associations between each species and stage of ticks with families and orders of hosts. Faith's phylogenetic diversity was used to evaluate the phylogenetic distance of the hosts of each species and changes occurring in the ontogenetic switch between consecutive stages of each species (or the extent of the changes in phylogenetic diversity of hosts for consecutive stages of the same species)., Results: We report highly clustered associations among Ixodes ticks and hosts, supporting the influence of the ecological adaptation and coexistence, demonstrating a lack of strict tick-host coevolution in most cases, except for a few species. Keystone hosts do not exist in the relationships between Ixodes and vertebrates because of the high redundancy of the networks, further supporting an ecological relationship between both types of partners. The ontogenetic switch of hosts is high for species with enough data, which is another potential clue supporting the ecological hypothesis. Other results suggest that the networks displaying tick-host associations are different according to the biogeographical realms. Data for the Afrotropical region reveal a lack of extensive surveys, while results for the Australasian region are suggestive of a mass extinction of vertebrates. The Palearctic network is well developed, with many links demonstrating a highly modular set of relationships., Conclusions: With the obvious exceptions of Ixodes species restricted to one or a few hosts, the results point to an ecological adaptation. The aim of this research was to analyze and model the aptitude of temperate areas to support permanent populations of the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus, which is principally distributed in tropical and subtropical areas. This work integrated field-derived data of tick development with temperature and land-based models of tick spread in Argentina. The integrated analysis of the results suggest that approximately 31°S is the southern limit where R. microplus finds appropriate climatic conditions to be established permanently. The establishment of permanent populations of R. microplus south of this latitudinal threshold is currently restricted because the low temperatures in autumn and winter inhibit the development of its eggs, but the introduction of cattle infested with R. microplus from early spring to late summer in temperate areas could produce engorged females laying eggs that would originate viable larvae from late spring to winter. The comparison of the temperature-based maps of habitat suitability with those obtained considering the lands suitable for livestock grazing, clearly shows that the models based only on climatic variables overestimate the potential dispersal of the cattle tick. The outcomes of this study suggest that an increase of temperature in the months of autumn and winter around 2°-2.75 °C should be necessary for the establishment of permanent populations of R. micoplus in the region belonging to temperate areas. The aim of this work is to report the presence of resistance to fluazuron in a population of Rhipicephalus microplus in Argentina. The evidence was obtained from field and in vitro trials. In the field trial, cattle infested with ticks was treated with two commercial formulations of fluazuron. The in vitro trial (adult immersion test, AIT) was performed by using technical grade fluazuron. In the field trial, there were no significant differences between the treated and control groups between days 2 and 34 post-treatment. The only exceptions (treated group I in day 14 post-treatment, treated group II in days 23 and 29 post-treatment) had a significantly lower tick load than the untreated group, but the efficacy was not higher than 70%. Viable engorged females were collected on both groups of treated bovines in all counts, and the production of viable larvae was not precluded with the application of the two commercial formulations of fluazuron evaluated in this study. The results obtained with the in vitro assay (AIT) also indicate that the R. microplus population tested in this work has a higher level of resistance to fluazuron than another susceptible field strain. The integrated analysis of the field and in vitro trials clearly reveals the emergence of resistance to fluazuron in a R. microplus population from Argentina. This diagnosis of resistance does not imply that the fluazuron has lost its functionality at a regional scale, but it highlights the need to establish control strategies that minimize the use of this drug in order to preserve its functionality as an acaricide., (© 2022. Rhipicephalus secundus is reestablished as a valid tick name within the Rhipicephalus sanguineus group and removed from the synonymy list of Rhipicephalus turanicus. Morphological re-description of both male and female of R. secundus and the analysis of its phylogenetic position based on mitochondrial DNA sequences are presented. The morphological re-description was made with tick specimens collected on goat in Israel. The phylogenetic analyses showed that R. secundus belong to a different clade from those formed by R. turanicus sensu stricto (s.s.) and R sanguineus s.s., and by other taxa from the R. sanguineus group. Rhipicephalus secundus is morphologically related to R. turanicus, but the scutal punctation pattern of both male and female allows the morphological differentiation between R. secundus and R. turanicus, punctations being clearly more numerous and larger in the latter. Both male and female of R. secundus can be differentiated from those of R. sanguineus s.s. by the shape of the spiracular plate. In males, the dorsal prolongation of the spiracular plate is equal to the breadth of the adjacent festoon in R. secundus, while it is narrower than the breadth of the adjacent festoon in R. sanguineus s.s. The dorsal prolongation of the spiracular plate in the female of R. secundus is wider than in the female of R. sanguineus s.s. The genital apertures of the females of R. secundus and R. sanguineus are both U-shaped, but in R. sanguineus s.s. it is broader than in R. secundus. Considering the results obtained in this study, it can be stated that R. secundus is present at least in Israel, Palestinian Territories, Turkey, Albania and southern Italy, but it is necessary to carry out additional studies to determine the geographical range and host usage of this species., (Copyright © 2022. The aim of this study was to report the finding of a nymph attached to an Argentinean tourist returning from South Africa. The nymph specimen was morphologically analysed, submitted to DNA extraction and amplifying the 16S rRNA mitochondrial gene. Additionally, the nymph DNA was screened for Rickettsia, Ehrlichia and Anaplasma infection. The nymph was determined to belong to Amblyomma marmoreum species complex. No specific diagnosis was achieved because the comparative descriptions of species in this complex contain important discordances, and the DNA sequence obtained in the present study is positioned within the same clade with sequences of A. marmoreum see above, but the genetic divergence with them (4.96 and 5.76%) indicate that they belong to different species. Females, nymphs, and larvae of Ixodes silvanus n. sp. collected from birds and from the vegetation in northwestern Argentina (Yungas Phytogeographic Province) are described herein. The new species belongs to the subgenus Trichotoixodes (Acari: Ixodidae). The female is diagnosed by a combination of the following characters: scutum with setae moderately long and more numerous in central field, fewer and moderately long setae on lateral fields, and inconspicuous setae in anterior field; basis capituli subtriangular dorsally; porose areas large and irregular in shape, lacking distinct margins; auriculae with straight edges diverging posterolaterally and ending with small blunt processes; hypostome narrow and pointed with dental formula 4/4 in the anterior third, then 3/3 and 2/2 near the base; coxae I with two spurs, sub-equal in size, internal slightly slimmer than external. The nymph is diagnosed by notum with numerous and long setae, ventral surface covered by numerous whitish setae, scutum with short scapulae and few and shallow punctations, setae on scutum few, short and irregularly distributed, basis capituli sub-triangular dorsally with posterior margin straight, cornua large and directed postero-laterally, auriculae large and projected laterally, lateral margin of basis capituli above auriculae with a lateral and triangular projection, hypostome pointed with dental formula 3/3 in the anterior third and then 2/2, and coxa I with two short, sub-equal, triangular spurs. The diagnostic characters of the larva are: basis capituli dorsally sub-triangular with lateral angles acute and posterior margin straight, auriculae as large triangular lateral projections, hypostome with apex bluntly pointed and dental formula 3/3 in the anterior third and then 2/2, coxa I with two short, sub-equal, triangular spurs, and pattern of dorsal and ventral body setae. References to the descriptions and redescriptions of the 742 species of Ixodidae published from 1758 to December 31, 2019 are compiled, with the goal of enabling tick taxonomists to readily access this diffuse and often confusing literature. Additionally, data resulting from this effort are critically analyzed to demonstrate the problems attending correct identification of several tick species that are of medical, veterinary and/or evolutionary importance, and to highlight the need for new or enhanced diagnostic techniques. Recent morphological and molecular studies indicate that some ixodid species names represent more than one taxon; therefore, it is expected that new species will be described in the near future, based partly on material already deposited in museums around the world.

Resistance to ivermectin in populations of the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus in Argentina was diagnosed in this work. The in vitro larval immersion test (LIT) was used to determine quantitatively the levels of resistance to ivermectin in different populations of R. microplus. Additionally, field trials to control natural infestations of R. microplus on cattle with a commercial formulation of ivermectin 3.15% were carried and jointly analyzed with the in vitro assays. The phenotypic response of the populations analyzed was not uniform. Five of them were classified as susceptible, four populations as resistant, and one in the category "incipient resistance". Regarding the field trials, the therapeutic efficacy in a population classified with LIT as susceptible achieved values higher than 94% two weeks after treatment, and no reproductively viable females were observed after the second day post-treatment. Conversely, the values of efficacy percentage in a population (named as "San Martín") classified with LIT in the category "incipient resistance" never exceeded the 70.8%, and engorged females were collected in practically all counts. The population "San Martín" was classified in the category "incipient resistant" with LIT analysis, but the field trial unambiguously shows that this tick population is resistant. The comparison of the results obtained with LIT in vitro assays and through field trials shows that biased estimations of resistance levels may occur when resistance ratios (RR) values are ≤2, and additional field efficacy trials could be needed to know with precision the status of the tick populations evaluated., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. The aim of this work was to test the efficacy of winter-spring control strategies against Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini, 1888) (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in an area highly favourable for its development in Argentina. Control schemes using three or four annual applications of synthetic acaricides were evaluated. Furthermore, the dynamics of the non-parasitic phases of R. microplus were analysed to provide a framework for the application of pasture spelling as a tool for tick control. The treatment schemes provided appropriate levels of efficacy against R. microplus and also prevented the occurrence of the major peak in abundance of this tick in autumn. A significant overall effect against R. microplus can be achieved when the control strategies tested in this study are applied within the area most ecologically favourable for this tick in Argentina. Analysis of the dynamics of the non-parasitic phase of R. microplus indicates that the spelling period required to achieve a significant reduction of larvae in pastures fluctuates between 12 and 17 weeks if spelling is initiated in spring or early summer, but between 20 and 28 weeks if spelling is started in late summer, autumn or winter., (© 2020 The Royal Entomological Society.)

In a recent study, we relegated the taxon Ixodes aragaoi Fonseca, 1935 to a junior synonym of Ixodes fuscipes Koch, 1844, and reinstated Ixodes spinosusNeumann, 1899 (a former synonym of I. fuscipes) to a valid species. We examined all lots of ticks formerly identified as I. fuscipes or I. aragaoi in three tick collections of Brazil. Through morphological analysis, some of the examined specimens could not be assigned to either I. fuscipes or I. spinosus based on the examination of the type specimens of these two species. Herein, we report these ticks to represent three different species: Ixodes catarinensis n. sp. Onofrio & Labruna, Ixodes lasalleiMéndez Arocha and Ortiz, 1958, and Ixodes bocatorensisApanaskevich and Bermúdez, 2017. The latter two species are reported for the first time in Brazil. Phylogenetic analysis inferred from the tick 16S rRNA gene partial sequences corroborated our morphological analysis, indicating that I. spinosus, I. lasallei, I. bocatorensis, and I. catarinensis n. sp. form a natural group of neotropical ticks. With the present study, the number of Ixodes species in Brazil increases from 9 to 12. The relationships between ticks and hosts are relevant to capture the ecological background driving the evolution of these parasites. We used a set of 4,764 records of ticks of the genera Amblyomma, Ixodes, and Haemaphysalis and their hosts in the Neotropics to approach the tick-host relationships using a network-based construct. The network identified 9 clusters of interacting hosts and ticks partially connected by 22 tick species that switch their host range according to their life cycle stage. These links among clusters do not confer an extra resilience to the network following removal of hosts and subsequent cascade extinctions of ticks: the robustness of the network slightly changed when these inter-clusters links are considered. Phylogenetic clustering of ticks to hosts at cluster level was not significant (p > 0.15) but if examined individually 63 tick species/stages (59%) displayed such clustering, suggesting that their hosts have a related phylogenetic background. We interpreted these results under an ecological perspective in which ticks could track its environmental niche associating to vertebrates that would maximize tick survival under the range of abiotic traits. We encourage these integrated analyses to capture the patterns of circulation of tick-transmitted pathogens, a topic still unaddressed in the Neotropical region.

Ixodes fuscipes Koch, 1844, described from Brazil, has been considered a valid species with records from Brazil and Peru. Ixodes spinosus Neumann, 1899, also described from Brazil, has been considered a synonym of I. fuscipes. In 2014, Ixodes aragaoi Fonseca, 1935 was redescribed as a valid species for Brazil and Uruguay. Until the present study, one major difference between the females of I. fuscipes and I. aragaoi was the horn-like auriculae in the former versus the ridge-like auriculae in the later, but this morphological difference was not supported after examination of the holotype of I. fuscipes and a syntype female of I. spinosus. Surprisingly, we found the type of I. fuscipes to have ridge-like auriculae, in contrast to the horn-like auriculae of I. spinosus. Comparisons of the I. fuscipes holotype with the syntypes of I. aragaoi revealed that they correspond to the same species. Therefore, we redescribe I. fuscipes, relegate I. aragaoi to a junior synonym of I. fuscipes, and reinstate I. spinosus as a valid species. After examining all lots of I. fuscipes in four tick collections, no specimen was recognized as I. fuscipes when compared with the type specimen of this taxon. On the other hand, specimens previously identified as I. aragaoi are now confirmed as I. fuscipes, with bona fide records for Brazil and Uruguay. Some of the specimens previously reported as I. fuscipes are now confirmed as I. spinosus, with records in two Brazilian biomes, Amazon and Atlantic rainforest. The goal of this study was to clarify the taxonomic status of the Ixodes ricinus complex in the Southern Cone of America, by using morphological characters and molecular markers (mitochondrial 16SrDNA and cox1 genes). The morphological analysis indicates that three different taxa of the I. ricinus complex occur in this region: Ixodes pararicinus, Ixodes aragaoi, and Ixodes sp. cf. I. affinis. The most prominent diagnostic character among them is the size of scutal punctations in both male and female ticks. In the males of Ixodes sp. cf. I. affinis, the punctations on the central field and along the median marginal groove of the scutum are clearly larger than in the males of I. aragaoi and I. pararicinus, while the punctations of I. aragaoi are larger but less numerous than in I. pararicinus. The punctations in Ixodes sp. cf. I. affinis females are larger and deeper than in females of I. aragaoi and I. pararicinus, and those of I. aragaoi are slightly larger than in I. pararicinus. The length of the lateral posterior denticles of the male hypostome is comparatively longer in I. aragaoi than in the other two species, and longer in Ixodes sp. cf. I. affinis than in I. pararicinus. In the 16S analysis, I. pararicinus and I. aragaoi are monophyletic (99% and 98% bootstrap support, respectively), while Ixodes cf. I. affinis does not represent a single lineage. In the cox1 analysis, both I. pararicinus and I. aragaoi are well-defined taxa, but the bootstrap support for Ixodes sp. cf. I. affinis is low (67%). In general, there are considerable 16SrRNA differences among lineages of Ixodes sp. cf. I. affinis from different geographical areas. These results may be indicative of the existence of different species. The populations morphologically compatible with I. affinis from Argentina, Colombia, Panama, Belize, and USA should be provisionally named as Ixodes sp. cf. I. affinis until an integrative taxonomic work with further evidence redefines whether or not this taxon actually represents a species complex.

The datasets of records of the distribution of ticks and their hosts are invaluable tools to understand the phylogenetic patterns of evolution of ticks and the abiotic traits to which they are associated. Such datasets require an exhaustive collection of bibliographical references. In most cases, it is necessary the confirmation of reliable identification of ticks, together with an update of the scientific names of the vertebrate hosts. These data are not easily available, because many records were published in the so-called "grey literature". Herein, we introduced the Dataset of Ticks in South America, a repository that collates data on 4,764 records of ticks (4,124 geo-referenced) with a special reference to an extra 2,370 records of ticks on cattle, together with a set of abiotic traits, curated from satellite-derived information over the complete target region. The dataset includes details of the phylogenetic relationships of the species of hosts, providing researchers with both biotic and abiotic traits that drive the distribution and evolution of ticks in South America.

Both treatment schemes provided appropriate levels of efficacy against R. microplus and also prevented the occurrence of the major peak in the frequency of this tick in autumn. The two treatment schemes were similar in terms of efficacy and thus the addition of a fourth treatment does not seem to confer any further advantage. Many species of Amblyomma ticks are commonly found infesting wild birds in South America, where birds are important hosts for several arboviruses, such as West Nile virus (WNV) and St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV). In this study, WNV and SLEV transmission experiments were performed to evaluate the vector competence of three South American tick species: Amblyomma ovale , Amblyomma tigrinum , and Amblyomma tonelliae . Larval and nymphal ticks of each species were allowed to feed on chicks needle inoculated with WNV or SLEV. All three Amblyomma species acquired either WNV or SLEV through larval feeding, with infection rates varying from 3.1% to 100% for WNV and from 0% to 35.7% for SLEV in engorged larvae. Transstadial perpetuation of the viruses was demonstrated in the molted nymphs, with WNV infection rates varying from 0% to 33.7% and SLEV infection rates from 13.6% to 23.8%. Although nymphal ticks also acquired either virus through feeding, transstadial perpetuation to adult ticks was lower, with virus detection in only 3.2% of A. tigrinum and 11.5% of A. tonelliae unfed adult ticks. On the other hand, vector competence for nymphs (exposed to WNV or SLEV through larval feeding) and adult ticks (exposed to WNV or SLEV through larval or nymphal feeding) was null in all cases. Although our results indicate transstadial perpetuation of WNV or SLEV in the three tick species, the ticks were not competent to transmit these agents to susceptible hosts. The role of these ixodid tick species in the epidemiology of WNV and SLEV might be insignificant, even though at least A. ovale and A. tigrinum are frequent bird ticks in Latin America, so the virus could survive winter in the fed larvae. However, future studies are required to determine the implications that this could have, as well as analyze the vector competence of other common bird tick species in South America.

Background: The goal of this study was to reassess the taxonomic status of A. maculatum, A. triste and A. tigrinum by phylogenetic analysis of five molecular markers [four mitochondrial: 12S rDNA, 16S rDNA, the control region (DL) and cytochrome c oxidase 1 (cox1), and one nuclear: ribosomal intergenic transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2)]. In addition, the phenotypic diversity of adult ticks identified as A. maculatum and A. triste from geographically distinct populations was thoroughly re-examined., Results: Microscopic examination identified four putative morphotypes distinguishable by disjunct geographical ranges, but very scant fixed characters. Analysis of the separated mitochondrial datasets mostly resulted in conflicting tree topologies. Nuclear gene sequences were almost identical throughout the geographical ranges of the two species, suggesting a very recent, almost explosive radiation of the terminal operational taxonomic units. Analysis of concatenated molecular datasets was more informative and indicated that, although genetically very close to the A. maculatum - A. triste lineage, A. tigrinum was a monophyletic separate entity. Within the A. maculatum - A. triste cluster, three main clades were supported. The two morphotypes, corresponding to the western North American and eastern North American populations, consistently grouped in a single monophyletic clade with many shared mitochondrial sequences among ticks of the two areas. Ticks from the two remaining morphotypes, south-eastern South America and Peruvian, corresponded to two distinct clades., Conclusions: Given the paucity of morphological characters, the minimal genetic distance separating morphotypes, and more importantly the fact that two morphotypes are genetically indistinguishable, our data suggest that A. maculatum and A. triste should be synonymized and that morphological differences merely reflect very recent local adaptation to distinct environments in taxa that might be undergoing the first steps of speciation but have yet to complete lineage sorting. Nonetheless, future investigations using more sensitive nuclear markers and/or crossbreeding experiments might reveal the occurrence of very rapid speciation events in this group of taxa. Tentative node dating revealed that the A. tigrinum and A. maculatum - A. triste clades split about 2 Mya, while the A. maculatum - A.triste cluster radiated no earlier than 700,000 years ago.

This paper provides a re-description of the female and a description of the nymph of Ixodes chilensis Kohls, 1956. Additionally, the phylogenetic position of the species of Ixodes Latreille, 1796 belonging to the subgenus Pholeoixodes Schulze, 1942 was analysed and discussed based on a phylogenetic pattern obtained with mitochondrial DNA sequences of the 16S rRNA gene. The diagnostic characters unique for the female of I. chilensis are a combination of coxae I-IV of legs with one external minute triangular spur each (barely perceptible) and lacking internal spur, tarsus I with a subapical dorsal hump, basis capituli subrectangular with sinuous posterior margin, hypostome rounded apically, cornua and auriculae absent, scapulae pointed, palps short, porose areas rounded separated by an interporose area wider than the diameter of one area, scutum with posterior margin straight and surface in the anterolateral field rugose, with punctations larger in the posterior field. The nymph of I. chilensis is characterised by the presence of scutum with posterior margin nearly straight, lateral carinae absent, basis capituli subrectangular in shape with posterior margin nearly straight, small auriculae as lateral ridges, palps short, hypostome rounded apically, and coxae I-IV of legs with just one external small triangular spur each (barely perceptible) and lacking internal spurs. Analysis of 16S sequences showed that I. chilensis form a well-supported clade with the following species with a wide geographical distribution but mostly established in the Palaearctic region and none from the Neotropics: I. simplex Neumann, 1906; I. arboricola Schulze & Schlottke, 1929; I. lividus Koch, 1844; I. canisuga Johnston, 1849; I. vespertilionis Koch, 1844; I. ariadnae Hornok, 2014; I. collaris Hornok, 2016; and I. kangdingensis Gou, Sun, Xu & Durden, 2017. The phylogenetic analysis also has demonstrated that the subgenus Pholeoixodes Schulze, 1942 is not monophyletic. The species considered as belonging to this subgenus were grouped in two different clades which did not have a well-supported common node defining monophyly.

Associations with environmental and host parameters were assessed to describe tick parasitism patterns in two medium-sized mammals of the Atlantic rainforest region of Argentina. Ticks found on 93 specimens of Nasua nasua and 26 specimens of Didelphis aurita captured at six sites in the Iguazú National Park were collected. Generalized linear models were constructed to explain the presence and abundance of ticks and the most appropriate ones were selected after stepwise simplification. The season, site and host body mass variables were important to explain the abundance of Amblyomma coelebs nymphs, while site was important to describe larval abundance of this species. Season was the most important variable for larvae and nymphs of Haemaphysalis juxtakochi, while Amblyomma brasiliense nymphs were associated with host age. Amblyomma ovale larvae were related to host age, and adult ticks with host sex. The aims of this work were to re-describe all parasitic stages of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu stricto, to select and deposit a neotype, and to characterize some of its diagnostic molecular traits. A male of R. sanguineus s.s. collected in Montpellier, France, was designated as neotype. The diagnostic characters unique to the male of R. sanguineus s.s. are: spiracular plate elongated and subtriangular in shape with a dorsal prolongation narrow and usually visible dorsally, with the dorsal prolongation narrower than the width of the adjacent festoon; punctations of the scutum moderate in number and unequal in size; marginal groove conspicuous, deep and punctate; posteromedian groove distinct and elongated, and posterolateral grooves often sub-circular, shorter than posteromedian groove; adanal plates long, wide, and subtriangular in shape, with a clear concavity in its inner margin and posterior margin broadly rounded or truncated; accessory adanal plates with the posterior end pointed, narrower than the width of adjacent festoon. The female of R. sanguineus s.s. can be diagnosed by a combination of broadly U-shaped genital aperture, spiracular plate with a narrow dorsal prolongation visible dorsally, basis capituli hexagonal with broad lateral angles, and scutum barely longer than broad with posterior margin sinuous and punctations moderate in number and unequal in size, larger and more numerous along cervical fields. The nymph has a basis capituli sub-triangular dorsally with lateral angles slightly curved and presence of ventral processes, scutum approximately as long as broad with lateral margins nearly straights, posterior margin broadly rounded, and cervical grooves short and sigmoid in shape extending posteriorly to the level of the eyes. The larva is characterized by basis capituli broader than long with lateral angles short and slightly curved and with posterior margin slightly convex, cervical grooves short, shallow and subparallel, and scutum almost twice broader than long. The phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences support R. sanguineus s.s. as a well-defined taxon when compared with other species of the R. sanguineus group: R. turanicus s.s., R. camicasi, R. guilhoni, R. sulcatus, R. pusillus, R. rossicus and R. leporis. Molecularly R. sanguineus s.s. also encompasses the so-called "temperate lineage" from the New World (Argentina, southern Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, and USA). The evidence currently available supports the presence of R. sanguineus s.s. in Europe (France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and Portugal) and America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and U.S.A.), but further studies are needed to determine the exact geographic range of this taxon., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier GmbH. An ecological analysis of a tick (Ixodida: Ixodidae) community across a landscape gradient presenting differential anthropogenic disturbance in the Atlantic Forest ecoregion in Argentina was performed. Ticks were collected from vegetation and hosts between September 2014 and August 2016. A total of 12 697 free-living ticks and 3347 specimens from hosts were collected, including 317 ticks infesting humans. The values obtained show considerable species diversity in the forest environment accompanied by low equitability. The similarity index derived from a comparison of forest and agricultural environments was higher than that calculated by comparing forest and urban environments. The data suggest that although a cycle of one generation per year is apparent in some species, more than one cohort may co-exist within the populations of some of these species. Well-marked patterns of the seasonal distribution of free-living tick species emerged in environments with no anthropic modification. The results indicate that forest environments are more suitable habitats than agricultural and urban environments for many species of native tick, but are unsuitable for exotic species that have successfully established in environments that have been modified by man., (© 2018 The Royal Entomological Society.)

The aim of this work was to generate knowledge on ecological aspects of Amblyomma sculptum in Argentina, such as seasonal dynamics, geographical range size, hosts, genetic diversity and phylogeography. Adult and immature A. sculptum ticks were collected in different localities of Argentina to know the geographical range size and hosts. The genetic diversity of this tick was studied through analyses of 16S rDNA sequences. To describe the seasonal dynamics, free-living ticks were monthly collected from October 2013 to October 2015. A. sculptum shows a marked ecological preference for Chaco Húmedo eco-region and "Albardones" forest of the great rivers in the wetlands in the Chaco Biogeographical Province, and for Selvas Pedemontanas and Selva Montana in the Yungas Biogeographical Province. This species has low host specificity, and it has large wild and domestic mammals as principal hosts to both immature and adult stages. Amblyomma sculptum is characterized by a one-year life cycle. Larvae peak in early winter, nymphs peaked during mid-spring, and adults during late summer and mid-summer. The genetic divergence was low and the total genetic variability was attributable to differences among populations. This fact could be associated to stochastics process linked to micro-habitat variations that could produce a partial restriction to gene flow among populations. The parasitism of Ixodes loricatus Neumann on white-eared opposum, Didelphis albiventris Lund, was analysed in the southern ranges of both. In central Argentina, 118 wild opossums were captured from 2005 to 2012. Adults of I. loricatus were collected (prevalence = 66.1%, mean = 7.03, median = 4), but no immature stage. Tick infestation was not affected by sex (p = 0.27) or age (p = 0.37) of hosts. In line with previous studies about seasonality of larvae and nymphs of I. loricatus, adult tick infestation showed no seasonal trend. This lack of seasonal pattern of infestation for all parasitic stages of I. loricatus may indicate a life cycle governed by nidicolous behaviour, in such a way that this habit would contribute to minimize the influence of external environmental variables. The tick sex ratio was female biased, with two females per one male (p = 0.002). The absence of I. loricatus immatures on D. albiventris suggests that in the study region there is clear segregation of immatures in rodents and adults in marsupials.

Males and females specimens of Amblyomma were collected from Orthriophis hodgsoni (Squamata: Colubridae) caught during routine herpetological work in Kathmandu. Morphological characteristics led to the diagnosis of A. varanense, constituting the second Nepalese species for the genus after the collection of Amblyomma gervaisi, also from a colubrid snake, almost 100 years ago. Amblyomma varanense is the 55th species found in the country, and preceded for the collection of 21 species of Haemaphysalis, 14 Ixodes, 6 Rhipicephalus, 6 Hyalomma, 4 Dermacentor, 1 Amblyomma, 1 Anomalohimalaya and 1 species of Nosomma. This study was performed to determine the tick species that infest cattle and humans throughout an altitudinal gradient in the Yungas Biogeographic Province of Argentina. The presence of tick-borne bacteria of the genera Rickettsia, Ehrlichia and Borrelia in the collected ticks was also evaluated. Samples of ticks parasitizing cattle and humans were carried out in different seasons. Questing ticks (adults and nymphs) were collected from vegetation and analyzed to detect the presence of Rickettsia, Ehrlichia and Borrelia by a battery of different PCRs. Five species of hard ticks were found parasitizing cattle: Amblyomma sculptum, Amblyomma tonelliae, Amblyomma hadanii, Haemaphysalis juxtakochi and Ixodes pararicinus. Amblyomma sculptum (immature and adults), A. tonelliae (immature and adults), A. hadanii (larvae) and one nymph of I. pararicinus were found attached to humans. Rickettsia amblyommatis was detected in one nymph of A. hadanii. DNA of a Borrelia genospecies belonging to the B. burgdorferi s.l. complex (phylogenetically related to haplotypes previously reported in Ixodes aragaoi from Uruguay and I. pararicinus from Argentina) was detected in adults of I. pararicinus. Amblyomma sculptum and I. pararicinus appear to be the tick species more frequent on cattle in the YBP from Argentina, and A. sculptum and A. tonelliae, were the main ticks found attached to humans. The medical importance of the bacteria of the genus Rickettsia and Borrelia detected in this work remains unknown.

The aim of this work was to study the non-parasitic phase of the Rhipicephalus microplus life cycle in Panicum maximum grasses from northern Argentina, in order to provide ecological information for designing methods of tick control. Four localities were chosen as replicates. The biological parameters measured were proportion of females ovipositing, the pre-oviposition period, the proportion of egg clusters hatching, the incubation period of eggs, larval longevity, and the total non-parasitic period (time from the exposure of the female to the date of death of the last larva) (TNPP)). The following general trends were observed: I) a longer TNPP occurred when female ticks were exposed in mid- and late summer and early spring; II) the shortest TNPP occurred when female ticks were exposed from late winter to late spring; III) larvae that were active in early and mid-summer had the shortest longevity; IV) incubation periods of eggs, which originated from females exposed in late summer, early autumn and mid-spring, were longer than the incubation period of eggs produced by females exposed in late spring and early summer; V) eggs did not hatch when the engorged females were exposed in the pastures in mid- and late autumn and winter. The aim of this work was to test the efficacy of strategic control methods of Rhipicephalus microplus infestation on beef cattle grazed in Panicum maximum grasses in northwestern Argentina. Also, an analysis to discern how the R. microplus population was distributed amongst cattle was also performed to determine if partial selective treatment or cull the small proportion of more heavily infested animals are feasible options to control this tick. The strategic scheme of treatments was designed to act on the small 1st generation of R. microplus in early spring and prevent in that way the appearance of the annual peak of abundance of R. microplus in summer and autumn. Animals of the group 1 were treated with ivermectin 3.15% on day 0 (25th September 2015), with fluazuron on day 32 (27th October 2015) and with fipronil on day 75 (9th December 2015). Animals of group 2 formed the control group. The overall effect of the treatments was positively significant. The number of ticks observed on the control group was significantly higher than the number of ticks observed on the treated group in all post-treatment counts (P<0.01), with the only exception of the count of March. The distribution of parasites among cattle in all counts was adjusted to the negative binomial distribution, but a temporal variation in the tick aggregation levels associated to changes in tick abundance was found. The higher the abundance of R. microplus, the lower the aggregation. It was found that the steers (15.8% of the total number of animals evaluated) belonging to the high infestation group accounted for 23.0% of the total ticks. The strategic control method evaluated during this study provides a remarkable overall effect against R. microplus because it significantly reduces the tick infestation on cattle with only three applications of acaricides in one-year period. Ecological specialization to restricted diet niches is driven by obligate, and often maternally inherited, symbionts in many arthropod lineages. These heritable symbionts typically form evolutionarily stable associations with arthropods that can last for millions of years. Ticks were recently found to harbour such an obligate symbiont, Coxiella-LE, that synthesizes B vitamins and cofactors not obtained in sufficient quantities from blood diet. In this study, the examination of 81 tick species shows that some Coxiella-LE symbioses are evolutionarily stable with an ancient acquisition followed by codiversification as observed in ticks belonging to the Rhipicephalus genus. However, many other Coxiella-LE symbioses are characterized by low evolutionary stability with frequent host shifts and extinction events. Further examination revealed the presence of nine other genera of maternally inherited bacteria in ticks. Although these nine symbionts were primarily thought to be facultative, their distribution among tick species rather suggests that at least four may have independently replaced Coxiella-LE and likely represent alternative obligate symbionts. Phylogenetic evidence otherwise indicates that cocladogenesis is globally rare in these symbioses as most originate via horizontal transfer of an existing symbiont between unrelated tick species. As a result, the structure of these symbiont communities is not fixed and stable across the tick phylogeny. Most importantly, the symbiont communities commonly reach high levels of diversity with up to six unrelated maternally inherited bacteria coexisting within host species. The aim of this work was to determine the evolutionary relationship among tick populations of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato distributed in Africa north of the Sahara and different lineages of R. sanguineus s.l. distributed in different regions of Sub-Saharan Africa, America and Europe through the analysis of DNA sequences of two mitochondrial genes. One hundred and thirty six 16S rRNA gene sequences and twenty-seven 12S rRNA gene sequences of R. sanguineus s.l. were analyzed. Phylogenetic analyses were performed including different lineages of R. sanguineus s.l. from America, Europe and Africa, and species belonging to the R. sanguineus group as Rhipicephalus camicasi, Rhipicephalus guilhoni, Rhipicephalus sulcatus, Rhipicephalus rossicus, Rhipicephalus pusillus, Rhipicephalus turanicus and Rhipicephalus leporis. At least two different lineages of R. sanguineus s.l. are living in sympatry in Africa north of the Sahara. One of these mitochondrial lineages belongs to the same evolutionary entity that R. sanguineus s.l. from tropical areas of America, R. sanguineus s.l. from Sub-Saharan Africa, R. camicasi and R. guilhoni. The other mitochondrial lineage of R. sanguineus s.l. present in Africa north of the Sahara is phylogenetically associated to R. sanguineus s.l. ticks from southeastern Europe (Romania, Turkey and Greece). Both evolutionary entities are clearly different to the evolutionary entity formed by R. sanguineus s.l. from western Europe and temperate areas of America. Thus, the name R. sanguineus s.s. cannot be assigned to any of the two evolutionary entities present in Africa north of the Sahara. The population dynamics of Rhipicephalus microplus (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in northwest Argentina was analysed to support the design of strategic methods for its control. Both parasitic and non-parasitic phases were studied. The seasonal activity of R. microplus in its parasitic phase was characterized by three peaks in abundance: the first in mid-late spring; the second in summer, and the third in autumn. The non-parasitic phase of R. microplus was characterized by a long total non-parasitic period observed after exposures of females from mid-summer to early autumn, a short total non-parasitic period observed after exposures of females from late winter to late spring, a short period of larval longevity in early and mid-summer, and no hatch of the eggs produced by females exposed in mid- and late autumn and winter. Treatments of cattle administered during the period from late winter to late spring will act on small cohorts of R. microplus, preventing the emergence of larger generations in summer and autumn. A 17-week spelling period starting in late spring and early summer will be necessary to achieve optimal control of R. microplus free-living larvae. The goal of this work was to combine different lines of evidence besides that of molecular markers to delimit species in ticks when the molecular data are not totally congruent. Two groups (Argentina, Brazil) of South American populations of Amblyomma parvum were compared to test whether the splitting of these two lineages suggested by genetic analyses is complete. Comparative studies of reproductive compatibility, morphological analyses of fixed characters, and comparison of population distributions in spatially defined ecological niches were performed.The morphological comparisons of both discrete and morphometric characters showed no differences among A. parvum ticks from Argentina and Brazil. The intercrosses and backcrosses showed evidence of pre- and post-zygotic compatibility between the two groups. No significant differences in environmental traits were found which would justify the separation of the records of A. parvum in distinct groups. Although the gene flow between the two groups of populations is limited, the absence of reproductive barriers, the lack of significant morphological differences, and the absence of significant differences in the niche preferences indicate that populations of A. parvum from Argentina and Brazil should be treated as a single species. Distribution and host data from published literature and previously unpublished collection records are provided for all nine species of the Holarctic tick genus Dermacentor that are known to occur in Mexico, as well as two species that may occur there. Parasite-host and host-parasite lists are presented, together with a gazetteer of collection localities and their geographical coordinates.

The present study explores associations of different factors (i.e. host parameters, presence of other ectoparasites and [mainly biotic] environmental factors) with burdens of Ixodes loricatus immature stages in one of its main hosts in Argentina, the rodent Akodon azarae. For 2 years, rodents were trapped and sampled monthly at 16 points located in four different sites in the Parana River Delta region. Data were analysed with generalized linear mixed models with a negative binomial response (counts of larvae or nymphs). The independent variables assessed were (a) environmental: trapping year, presence of cattle, type of vegetation, rodent abundance; (b) host parameters: body length, sex, body condition, blood cell counts, natural antibody titers and (c) co-infestation with other ectoparasites. Two-way interaction terms deemed a priori as relevant were also included in the analysis. Most of the associations investigated were found significant, but in general, the direction and magnitude of the associations were context-dependent. An exception was the presence of cattle, which was consistently negatively associated with both larvae and nymphs independently of all other variables considered and had the strongest effect on tick burdens. Mites, fleas and Amblyomma triste were also significantly associated (mostly positively) with larval and nymph burdens, and in many cases, they influenced associations with environmental or host factors. Our findings strongly support that raising cattle may have a substantial impact on the dynamics of I. loricatus and that interactions within the ectoparasite community may be an important-but generally ignored-driver of tick dynamics.

The ecology of Amblyomma tonelliae (Ixodida: Ixodidae), including its seasonal distribution and the development periods of each stage, was investigated during a study carried out over two consecutive years in northwestern Argentina. In addition, the genetic variation of this tick was studied through analyses of 16S rDNA sequences. Amblyomma tonelliae has a 1-year lifecycle characterized by a long pre-moult period in larvae with no development of morphogenetic diapause. Larvae peak in abundance during late autumn and early winter; nymphs peak in abundance in spring, and adults do so from late spring to early summer. Amblyomma tonelliae shows a marked ecological preference for the driest areas of the Chaco ecoregion. In analyses of 16S rDNA sequences in genes from different populations of A. tonelliae, values for nucleotide diversity and the average number of nucleotide differences showed genetic diversity within this species to be low. Here we offer a multivariable analysis that explores associations of different factors (i.e., environmental, host parameters, presence of other ectoparasites) with the interaction of Amblyomma triste immature stages and one of its main hosts in Argentina, the rodent Akodon azarae. Monthly and for two years, we captured and sampled rodents at 16 points located at 4 different sites in the Parana River Delta region. The analyses were conducted with Generalized Linear Mixed Models with a negative binomial response (counts of larvae or nymphs). The independent variables assessed were: (a) environmental: trapping year, season, presence of cattle; type of vegetation (natural grassland or implanted forest); rodent abundance; (b) host parameters: body length; sex; body condition; blood cell counts; natural antibody titres; and (c) co-infestation with other ectoparasites: other stage of A. triste; Ixodes loricatus; lice; mites; and fleas. Two-way interaction terms deemed a priori as relevant were also included in the analysis. Larvae were affected by all environmental variables assessed and by the presence of other ectoparasites (lice, fleas and other tick species). Host factors significantly associated with larval count were sex and levels of natural antibodies. Nymphs were associated with season, presence of cattle, body condition, body length and with burdens of I. loricatus. In most cases, the direction and magnitude of the associations were context-dependent (many interaction terms were significant). The findings of greater significance and implications of our study are two. Firstly, as burdens of A. triste larvae and nymphs were greater where cattle were present, and larval tick burdens were higher in implanted forests, silvopastoral practices developing in the region may affect the population dynamics of A. triste, and consequently the eco-epidemiology of Rickettsia parkeri. Secondly, strong associations and numerous interactions with other ectoparasites suggest that co-infestations may be more important for tick dynamics than has so far been appreciated., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Strategic applications of long-acting acaricides for the control of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus in northwestern Argentina were evaluated for one year. In addition, tick distribution among cattle was analyzed to evaluate if partial selective treatment or culling the small proportion of most heavily infested animals were feasible options to control R. (B.) microplus. Two different treatments schemes based on two applications of fluazuron and one application of 3.15% ivermectin were performed. Treatments were made in late winter and spring so as to act on the small 1st spring generation of R. (B.) microplus, in order to preclude the rise of the larger autumn generation. The overall treatment effect was positively significant in both schemes. The number of ticks observed in the control group was significantly higher than in the treated groups on all post-treatment counts. Group 2 exhibited more than 80% of efficacy almost throughout the study period, whereas Group 1 exhibited an efficacy percentage higher than 80% in September, October, December, February, April and May, but not in November (73.4%), January (58.3%), March (45.2%) or June (53.4%). Absolute control was observed in Group 2 in the counts of September and October, and in Group 1 in the count of February. The control strategies evaluated in this work provide an acceptable control level with only three applications of acaricides; at the same time, they prevent the occurrence of the autumn peak of tick burdens, which is characteristic of R. (B.) microplus in northwestern Argentina. Tick distribution was markedly aggregated in all counts. Although ticks were not distributed evenly among calves, the individual composition of the most heavily infested group was not consistent throughout the study period. In addition, the level of aggregation varied with tick abundance. These results suggest that applying acaricides to a portion of the herd or culling the most infested individuals at a given moment of the year may not be proper methods to achieve a significant control of R. The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu stricto, is a species with considerable public health and economic importance. However, the taxonomic status of this species is far from resolved. After more than 110 years of scientific work on R. sanguineus s.s., the situation is that there is no type, no solid description, nor is there a consensus about the range of morphological variability within the species. Recent findings based on laboratory crosses and molecular genetics strongly suggest that there are several entities grouped under the same name. Here we review the history of the taxon, and we point out the caveats behind any further work on this tick. The current taxonomic status of R. sanguineus s.s. thus lacks an informative original description, and is based on the existence of several morphological descriptions based on ticks originating from different populations, which show, in some cases, biological incompatibility and significant genetic divergence. We suggests that as a result it is not possible to assign the specific name R. sanguineus s.s. to any population. Further work is required based on the rules issued by the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature to clearly define the morphological range of the different populations., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. To date, three tick-borne pathogenic Rickettsia species have been reported in different regions of Argentina, namely, R. rickettsii, R. parkeri, and R. massiliae. However, there are no reports available for the presence of tick-borne pathogens from the northeastern region of Argentina. This study evaluated the infection with Rickettsia species of Amblyomma dubitatum ticks collected from vegetation and feeding from capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) in northeastern Argentina. From a total of 374 A. dubitatum ticks collected and evaluated by PCR for the presence of rickettsial DNA, 19 were positive for the presence of Rickettsia bellii DNA, two were positive for Rickettsia sp. strain COOPERI, and one was positive for the pathogenic Rickettsia sp. strain Atlantic rainforest. To our knowledge, this study is the first report of the presence of the human pathogen Rickettsia sp. strain Atlantic rainforest and Rickettsia sp. strain COOPERI in Argentina. Moreover, our findings posit A. dubitatum as a potential vector for this pathogenic strain of Rickettsia.

Four species of Neotropical ticks, Amblyomma mixtum, Amblyomma cajennense, Amblyomma tonelliae and Amblyomma sculptum (formerly included in the catch-all name A. cajennense), have an allopatric distribution in much of their range, with areas of parapatry for at least two of them. We inferred the abiotic niches of these organisms using coefficients of a harmonic regression of the temperature and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI, reflecting plant stress) from remotely sensed data from MODIS satellites with 0.05° spatial resolution. Combinations of coefficients describing the phenology of these two variables pointed to divergent niche preferences, compatible with previous events of vicariance among the species. Amblyomma cajennense has been recorded in areas with small variations in temperature and NDVI. The remaining species were recorded in areas with large variations. The maximum environmental niche overlap was ∼73.6% between A. mixtum and A. cajennense and 73.5% between A. tonelliae and A. sculptum. Projecting these inferences on the geographical space revealed probable areas of sympatry or parapatry between A. mixtum and A. cajennense or between A. tonelliae and A. sculptum, the latter of which was confirmed with field collections. The A. sculptum distribution overlaps with that of A. tonelliae in northern Argentina and Paraguay; parapatry occurs at one extreme of the conditions occupied by both species. Compared with areas of allopatry, sites with both species had consistently lower temperatures, except for 10-12weeks during the summer, and higher NDVI values throughout the year. We hypothesise that the overlap between A. tonelliae and A. sculptum resulted from secondary contact between populations, with A. sculptum adapting to sites with high water availability to balance high summer temperatures. Additional surveys of the areas of spatial overlap among these species are necessary to elucidate the forces driving their evolution and their adaptation to the environment., (Copyright © 2014 Australian Society for Parasitology Inc. In this study we analyzed seasonal trends of immature stages of Ixodes loricatus parasitizing Akodon azarae (Sigmodontinae) in a locality of the Paraná Delta, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The data encompassed two consecutive years and the analysis included the control of potential confounders using Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMM) with a negative binomial response. Larvae had within-year differences in abundance, but the peak months differed drastically between both sampling years, indicating that there was no consistent seasonal pattern. Regarding nymphs, a seasonal pattern was first apparent, but it vanished completely when potential confounders were considered, strongly suggesting that the association with season was spurious and caused by the confounders. Our results showed that the occurrence of immature I. loricatus in its hosts does not follow a distinct seasonal pattern, and highlight the usefulness of controlling for confounding and statistically assessing consistency between years when establishing tick seasonality., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier GmbH. Ixodid ticks were collected from wild birds in five ecoregions in north-central Argentina, namely: Selva de las Yungas, Esteros del Iberá, Delta e Islas del Paraná, Selva Paranaense and Chaco Seco. A total of 2199 birds belonging to 139 species, 106 genera, 31 families and 11 orders were captured, but ticks were collected only from 121 birds (prevalence=5.5%) belonging to 39 species (28.1%) and three Orders: Tinamiformes (Tinamidae) and Falconiformes (Falconidae) in Selva de las Yungas and Passeriformes (Conopophagidae, Corvidae, Emberizidae, Furnariidae, Icteridae, Parulidae, Thamnophilidae, Thraupidae, Troglodytidae, Turdidae) for all ecoregions. The following tick species were found: Haemaphysalis juxtakochi, Haemaphysalis leporispalustris, Ixodes pararicinus plus Amblyomma sp. and Haemaphysalis sp. in Selva de las Yungas; Amblyomma triste and Ixodes auritulus in Delta e Islas del Paraná; Amblyomma dubitatum, A. triste and Amblyomma sp. in Esteros del Iberá; Amblyomma ovale and Amblyomma sp. in Selva Paranaense, and Amblyomma tigrinum in Chaco Seco. Amblyomma dubitatum was found for the first time on Passeriformes, while the records of A. ovale on avian hosts are the first for Argentina. Birds are also new hosts for I. pararicinus females. Besides 2 larvae and 1 nymph, and 1 larvae found on Tinamidae (Tinamiformes) and Falconidae (Falconiformes), respectively, all other ticks (691 larvae, 74 nymphs and 2 females) were found on Passeriformes with a relevant contribution of the family Turdidae. Birds are important hosts for I. pararicinus as shown by a prevalence of 45% while all others prevalence were below 15%. All the species of Amblyomma and Haemaphysalis found on birds in Argentina have been also detected on humans and are proven or potential vectors for human diseases. In the present study, we provide morphological descriptions of the nymph of Amblyomma parvitarsum, A. tonelliae, and redescriptions of A. argentinae and A. sculptum. A taxonomic key, with relevant morphological characters illustrated by scanning electron micrographs, is provided for nymphs of the 24 species of the genus Amblyomma occurring in Argentina. Species included are A. argentinae, A. aureolatum, A. auricularium, A. boeroi, A. brasiliense, A. calcaratum, A. coelebs, A. dissimile, A. dubitatum, A. incisum, A. longirostre, A. neumanni, A. nodosum, A. ovale, A. parvitarsum, A. parvum, A. pseudoconcolor, A. pseudoparvum, A. rotundatum, A. sculptum, A. tigrinum, A. tonelliae, A. triste and A. varium. Principal morphological characters used for discrimination among species are presence/absence of auriculae, cornua and festoons with tubercles, size and shape of spurs of coxa I, margin and punctations of scutum, shape of basis capituli and length of cervical grooves. The geographical distribution of each tick species included in this work is presented and the importance of an accurate determination to species level of the Amblyomma nymphs to make epidemiological inferences is also discussed., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier GmbH.
