The characterization of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) dust shows that bubble burst at the liquid steel surface is the principal source of dust emission. We have therefore developed an experimental device for studying this phenomenon. As in the case of the air-water system, the bubble-burst gives birth to two types of droplets: film drops and jet drops. The jet drop formation is observed with high-speed video. The film drop aerosol is collected on filters and then characterized by means of SEM, granulometric and gravimetric analyses. Results are presented and discussed. The quantification of both types of projections leads to the conclusion that the film drop projections represent the major source of dust. The amount of film drops greatly decreases with the parent bubble size. Under 4.5 mm in bubble diameter, no film drops are formed. Decreasing enough the bubble size would therefore represent an effective solution for reducing drastically the EAF dust emission.

Turbulent boundary layers have been manipulated successfully using passive devices called BLADES (boundary-layer alteration devices) leading to net drag reduction. Measurements of various turbulence quantities including intermittency have led to the identification of some of the mechanisms involved in skin-friction reduction. Velocity and vorticity fluctuations associated with oncoming large scales are inhibited significantly by the manipulator blades and the vorticity shed in their wake. The manipulated boundary layers exhibit a reduced intermittency in the outer part of the layer. The effects of manipulation relax with downstream distance and the boundary layer returns toward normal conditions after 100 or 150 boundary-layer thicknesses.

The stochastic estimation technique is described as well as its extension to two-point and space-time conditional estimates. Based on the experimental data of Guezennec (1985), a comparison is made between the stochastic estimates and the conventional ensemble averaging results. As only the normal velocity and streamwise components were measured at each point on the sampling grid, the assumption of statistical symmetry in the spanwise direction about the centerline was used and the spanwise velocity component was reconstructed by integrating the continuity equation from the centerline outward.

The stochastic estimation provides a means of estimating conditional averages from unconditional statistics, namely, the two-point correlation tensor. This technique is applied to three-dimensional data obtained in a fully turbulent boundary layer. The results of linear and nonlinear estimates are compared to the corresponding conditional averages and the agreement is found to be excellent, with little improvement for nonlinear estimates. Extensions of the technique to space-time estimates of one- and two-point conditional averages are also presented, the latter providing a means to examine structures associated with a given length scale.

Turbulence-producing events in turbulent channel flow were found to be predominantly associated with a symmetric vortical structures rather than pairs of counter-rotating structures. An asymmetry-preserving averaging scheme was devised, allowing a picture of the 'average' structure that more closely resembles the instantaneous one to be obtained. In addition, these structures were found to persist for long distances with little change while convecting downstream.

The quadrant-splitting and the wall-shear detection techniques were used to obtain ensemble-averaged wall layer structures. The two techniques give similar results for Q4 events, but the wall-shear method leads to smearing of Q2 events. Events were found to maintain their identity for very long times. The ensemble-averaged structures scale with outer variables. Turbulence producing events were associated with one dominant vortical structure rather than a pair of counter-rotating structures. An asymmetry-preserving averaging scheme was devised that allowed a picture of the average structure which more closely resembles the instantaneous one, to be obtained.

Entropy in information theory is defined as the expected or mean value of the measure of the amount of self-information contained in the ith point of a distribution series x sub i, based on its probability of occurrence p(x sub i). If p(x sub i) is the probability of the ith state of the system in probability space, then the entropy, E(X) = - sigma p(x sub i) logp (x sub i), is a measure of the disorder in the system. Based on this concept, a method was devised which sought to minimize the entropy in a time series in order to construct the signature of the most coherent motions. The constrained minimization was performed using a Lagrange multiplier approach which resulted in the solution of a simultaneous set of non-linear coupled equations to obtain the coherent time series. The application of the method to space-time data taken by a rake of sensors in the near-wall region of a turbulent boundary layer was presented. The results yielded coherent velocity motions made up of locally decelerated or accelerated fluid having a streamwise scale of approximately 100 nu/u(tau), which is in qualitative agreement with the results from other less objective discrimination methods.

The potential of passive 'manipulators' for altering the large scale turbulent structures in boundary layers was investigated. Utilizing smoke wire visualization and multisensor probes, the experiment verified that the outer scales could be suppressed by simple arrangements of parallel plates. As a result of suppressing the outer scales in turbulent layers, a decrease in the streamwise growth of the boundary layer thickness was achieved and was coupled with a 30 percent decrease in the local wall friction coefficient. After accounting for the drag on the manipulator plates, the net drag reduction reached a value of 20 percent within 55 boundary layer thicknesses downstream of the device. No evidence for the reoccurrence of the outer scales was present at this streamwise distance thereby suggesting that further reductions in the net drag are attainable. The frequency of occurrence of the wall events is simultaneously dependent on the two parameters, Re2 delta sub 2 and Re sub x. As a result of being able to independently control the inner and outer boundary layer characteristics with these manipulators, a different view of these layers emerged.
