Context. Recent studies of the optical depth comparing [12CII] and [13CII] line profiles in Galactic star-forming regions revealed strong self-absorption in [12CII] by low excitation foreground material, implying a large column density of C+ corresponding to an equivalent AV of a few, up to about 10 mag. Aims. As the nature and origin of such a large column of cold C+ foreground gas are difficult to explain, it is essential to constrain the physical conditions of this material. Methods. We conducted high-resolution observations of [OI] 63 um and [OI] 145 um lines in M17 SW and Mon R2. The [OI] 145 um transition traces warm PDR-material, while the [OI] 63 um line traces foreground material as manifested by absorption dips. Results. Comparison of both [OI] line profiles with [CII] isotopic lines confirms warm PDR-origin background emission and a significant column of cold foreground material causing self-absorption visible in [12CII] and [OI] 63 um profiles. In M17 SW, the C+ and O column densities are comparable for both layers. Mon R2 exhibits larger O columns compared to C+, indicating additional material where the carbon is neutral or in molecular form. Small-scale spatial variation of the foreground absorption profiles and the large column density (around 1E18 cm-2 ) of the foreground material suggest emission from high-density regions associated with the cloud complex, not a uniform diffuse foreground cloud. The analysis confirms that the previously detected intense [CII] foreground absorption is attributable to a large column of low excitation dense atomic material, where carbon is ionized, and oxygen is in neutral atomic form., Comment: 30 pages, 24 figures

Young early-type HAeBe stars are still embedded in the molecular clouds in which they formed. They illuminate reflection nebulae, which shape the surrounding molecular cloud and may trigger star formation. They are therefore ideal places to search for ongoing star formation activity. NGC2023 is illuminated by the Herbig Be star HD37903. It is the most massive member of a small young cluster with about 30 PMS stars, several of which are Class I objects that still heavily accrete. It might therefore be expected that they might drive molecular outflows. We examined the whole region for outflows. We analyzed previously published APEX data to search for and characterize the outflows in the NGC2023 region. This is the first systematic search for molecular outflows in this region. Since the outflows were mapped in several CO transitions, we can determine their properties quite well. We have discovered four molecular outflows in the vicinity of NGC2023, three of which are associated with Class I objects. MIR-63, a bright mid-infrared and submillimeter Class I source, is a binary with a separation of 2.4" and drives two bipolar outflows orthogonal to each other. The large southeast-northwest outflow excites the Herbig-Haro flow HH247. MIR-73, a Class I object, which is also a far-infrared source, drives a pole-on outflow. MIR-62 is a Class II object with strong infrared excess and a luminosity of 7 Lsun. It is not detected in the far-infrared. The Class I sources have bolometric luminosities of about 20 Lsun or lower, that is, they are all low-mass stars. One other far-infrared source, MIR-75, may have powered an outflow in the past because it now illuminates an egg-shaped cavity. It has long been discussed whether stellar feedback in the form of winds and/or radiation can shred the nascent molecular cloud, thereby controlling the star formation rate. However, directly probing and quantifying the impact of stellar feedback on the neutral gas of the nascent clouds is challenging. We present an investigation doing exactly that toward the RCW 79 HII region using the ionized carbon line at 158 $\mu$m ([CII]) from the FEEDBACK Legacy Survey. We combine this data with information on the dozen ionizing O stars responsible for the evolution of the region, and observe in [CII] for the first time both blue- and red-shifted mostly neutral high-velocity gas which reaches velocities up to 25 km s$^{-1}$ relative to the bulk emission of the molecular cloud. This high-velocity gas mostly contains neutral gas and partly forms a fragmented shell, similar to recently found shells in a few Galactic HII regions. However, this shell does not account for all of the observed neutral high-velocity gas. We also find high-velocity gas streaming out of the nascent cloud through holes and obtain a range of dynamical timescales below 1.0 Myr for the high-velocity gas which is well below the 2.3$\pm$0.5 Myr age of the OB cluster. This suggests a different scenario for the evolution of RCW 79, where the high-velocity gas is not solely stemming from a spherical expanding bubble, but also from gas recently ablated at the edge of the turbulent molecular cloud into the surrounding interstellar medium through low-pressure holes or chimneys. The resulting mass ejection rate estimate for the cloud is 0.9-3.5$\times$10$^{-2}$ M$_{\odot}$~yr$^{-1}$, which leads to short erosion timescales, i.e. $<$5 Myr, for the nascent molecular cloud. We quantified the effects of stellar feedback in RCW 49 by determining the physical conditions in different regions using the [CII] 158 $\mu$m and [OI] 63 $\mu$m observations from SOFIA, the $^{12}$CO (3-2) observations from APEX and the H$_2$ line observations from Spitzer telescopes. Large maps of RCW 49 were observed with the SOFIA and APEX telescopes, while the Spitzer observations were only available towards three small areas. From our qualitative analysis, we found that the H$_2$ 0-0 S(2) emission line probes denser gas compared to the H$_2$ 0-0 S(1) line. In four regions ("northern cloud", "pillar", "ridge", and "shell"), we compared our observations with the updated PDR Toolbox models and derived the integrated far-ultraviolet flux between 6-13.6 eV ($G_{\rm 0}$), H nucleus density ($n$), temperatures and pressures. We found the ridge to have the highest $G_{\rm 0}$ (2.4 $\times$ 10$^3$ Habing units), while the northern cloud has the lowest $G_{\rm 0}$ (5 $\times$ 10$^2$ Habing units). This is a direct consequence of the location of these regions with respect to the Wd2 cluster. The ridge also has a high density (6.4 $\times$ 10$^3$ cm$^{-3}$), which is consistent with its ongoing star formation. Among the Spitzer positions, we found the one closest to the Wd2 cluster to be the densest, suggesting an early phase of star formation. Furthermore, the Spitzer position that overlaps with the shell was found to have the highest $G_{\rm 0}$ and we expect this to be a result of its proximity to an O9V star., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures

We present [CII] 158 $\mu$m and [OI] 63 $\mu$m observations of the bipolar HII region RCW 36 in the Vela C molecular cloud, obtained within the SOFIA legacy project FEEDBACK, which is complemented with APEX $^{12/13}$CO(3-2) and Chandra X-ray (0.5-7 keV) data. This shows that the molecular ring, forming the waist of the bipolar nebula, expands with a velocity of 1 - 1.9 km s$^{-1}$. We also observe an increased linewidth in the ring indicating that turbulence is driven by energy injection from the stellar feedback. The bipolar cavity hosts blue-shifted expanding [CII] shells at 5.2$\pm$0.5$\pm$0.5 km s$^{-1}$ (statistical and systematic uncertainty) which indicates that expansion out of the dense gas happens non-uniformly and that the observed bipolar phase might be relatively short ($\sim$0.2 Myr). The X-ray observations show diffuse emission that traces a hot plasma, created by stellar winds, in and around RCW 36. At least 50 \% of the stellar wind energy is missing in RCW 36. This is likely due to leakage which is clearing even larger cavities around the bipolar RCW 36 region. Lastly, the cavities host high-velocity wings in [CII] which indicates relatively high mass ejection rates ($\sim$5$\times$10$^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$). This could be driven by stellar winds and/or radiation pressure, but remains difficult to constrain. This local mass ejection, which can remove all mass within 1 pc of RCW 36 in 1-2 Myr, and the large-scale clearing of ambient gas in the Vela C cloud indicates that stellar feedback plays a significant role in suppressing the star formation efficiency (SFE)., Comment: 38 pages, 27 figures, 8 tables, accepted in ApJ

During star formation, the dense gas undergoes significant chemical evolution leading to the emergence of a rich variety of molecules associated with hot cores and hot corinos. The physical and chemical conditions are poorly constrained; the early phases of emerging hot cores in particular represent an unexplored territory. We provide here a full molecular inventory of a massive protostellar core that is proposed to be a precursor of a hot core. We performed an unbiased spectral survey towards the hot core precursor associated with clump G328.2551-0.5321 between 159GHz and 374GHz. To identify the spectral lines, we used rotational diagrams and radiative transfer modelling assuming LTE. We detected 39 species and 26 isotopologues, and were able to distinguish a warm and compact inner region, a colder more extended envelope, and the kinematic signatures of the accretion shocks that have previously been observed with ALMA. We associate most of the emission of the small molecules with the cold gas, while the molecular emission of the warm gas is enriched by complex organic molecules (COMs). We find a high abundance of S-bearing molecules in the cold gas phase suggesting a low sulphur depletion, with a factor of > 1%. We identify nine COMs in the warm gas, four in the cold gas, and four towards the accretion shocks. The high abundances of S-bearing species originating from the undisturbed gas may suggest a contribution from shocked gas at the outflow cavity walls. The molecular composition of the warm gas is similar to that of both hot cores and hot corinos, but the molecular abundances are closer to the values found towards hot corinos than to values found towards hot cores. Considering the compactness of the warm region and its moderate temperature, we suggest that thermal desorption has not been completed towards this object yet, representing an early phase of the emergence of hot cores., Comment: 68 pages, 59 figures. Context: How do expanding HII regions interact with their environmental cloud? This is one of the central questions driving the SOFIA legacy program FEEDBACK. Here, we present a case study toward the prototypical H{\sc ii} region NGC7538. Methods: With SOFIA we mapped an area of ~210'^2 around NGC7538 in the [CII] line at 1.9THz. Complementary observed atomic carbon [CI] and high-J CO(8-7) data as well as archival NIR/FIR, cm continuum, CO(3-2) and HI data are folded into the analysis. Results: While the overall [CII] morphology follows the general ionized gas, the channel maps show multiple bubble-like structures with sizes on the order of ~80-100" (~1.0-1.28pc). While at least one of them may be an individual feedback bubble driven by the main exciting sources of the region, the other bubble-morphologies may also be due to the intrinsically porous structure of the HII region. An analysis of the expansion velocities around 10km s^{-1} indicates that thermal expansion is not sufficient but that wind-driving from the central O-stars is required. The most blue-shifted [CII] component has barely any molecular or atomic counterparts. At the interface to the molecular cloud, we find a typical photon-dominated region (PDR) with a bar-shape. Ionized, atomic and molecular carbon show a layered structure in this PDR. The carbon in the PDR is dominated by its ionized form with atomic and molecular masses of ~0.45+-0.1M_{\odot} and ~1.2+-0.1M_{\odot}, respectively, compared to the ionized carbon in the range of 3.6-9.7M_{\odot}. Conclusions: The NGC7538 HII region exhibits a diverse set of sub-structures that interact with each other as well as with the adjacent cloud. Only recently, OD, the deuterated isotopolog of hydroxyl, OH, has become accessible in the interstellar medium; spectral lines from both species have been observed in the supra-Terahertz and far infrared regime. Here we study rotational lines of OD and OH towards 13 Galactic high-mass star forming regions, with the aim to constrain the OD abundance and infer the deuterium fractionation of OH in their molecular envelopes. We used the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) to observe the $^2\Pi_{3/2}$ $J=5/2-3/2$ ground-state transition of OD at 1.3 THz ($215~\mu$m) and the rotationally excited OH line at 1.84 THz ($163~\mu$m). We also used published high-spectral-resolution SOFIA data of the OH ground-state transition at 2.51 THz ($119.3~\mu$m). Our results show that absorption from the $^2\Pi_{3/2}$ OD $J=5/2-3/2$ ground-state transition is prevalent in the dense clumps surrounding active sites of high-mass star formation. We performed detailed radiative transfer modelling to investigate the OD abundance profile in the inner envelope for a large fraction of our sample. Our modelling suggests that part of the absorption arises from the denser inner parts, while the bulk of it as seen with SOFIA originates in the outer, cold layers of the envelope for which our constraints on the molecular abundance suggest a strong enhancement in deuterium fractionation. We find a weak negative correlation between the OD abundance and the bolometric luminosity to mass ratio, an evolutionary indicator, suggesting a slow decrease of OD abundance with time. A comparison with HDO shows a similarly high deuterium fractionation for the two species in the cold envelopes, which is of the order of 0.48% for the best studied source, G34.26+0.15. Revealing the 3D dynamics of HII regions and their associated molecular clouds is important for understanding the longstanding problem as to how stellar feedback affects the density structure and kinematics of the interstellar medium. We employed observations of the HII region RCW 120 in [CII], observed within the SOFIA legacy program FEEDBACK, and the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO (3$\to$2) lines, obtained with APEX. In addition we used HI data from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey. Two radiative transfer models were used to fit the observed data. A line profile analysis with the 1D non-LTE radiative transfer code SimLine proves that the CO emission cannot stem from a spherically symmetric molecular cloud configuration. With a two-layer multicomponent model, we then quantified the amount of warm background and cold foreground gas. There is a deficit of CO emission along the line-of-sight toward the center of the HII region which indicates that the HII region is associated with a flattened molecular cloud. Self-absorption in the CO line may hide signatures of infalling and expanding molecular gas. The [CII] emission arises from an expanding [CII] bubble and from the PDRs. A significant part of [CII] emission is absorbed in a cool (~60-100 K), low-density (<500 cm$^{-3}$) atomic foreground layer with a thickness of a few parsec. We propose that the RCW 120 HII region formed in a flattened molecular cloud and is now bursting out of its parental cloud. The compressed surrounding molecular layer formed a torus around the spherically expanding HII bubble. This scenario can possibly be generalized for other HII bubbles and would explain the observed "flat" structure of molecular clouds associated with HII bubbles. We suggest that the [CII] absorption observed in many star-forming regions is at least partly caused by low-density, cool, HI-envelopes surrounding the molecular clouds.

The [CII] 158$\mu$m fine-structure line is the dominant cooling line of moderate-density photodissociation regions (PDRs) illuminated by moderately bright far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation fields. We aim to understand the origin of [CII] emission and its relation to other tracers of gas and dust in PDRs. One focus is a study of the heating efficiency of interstellar gas as traced by the [CII] line to test models of the photoelectric heating of neutral gas by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules and very small grains. We make use of a one-square-degree map of velocity-resolved [CII] line emission toward the Orion Nebula complex, and split this out into the individual spatial components, the expanding Veil Shell, the surface of OMC4, and the PDRs associated with the compact HII region of M43 and the reflection nebula NGC 1977. We employed Herschel far-infrared photometric images to determine dust properties. Moreover, we compared with Spitzer mid-infrared photometry to trace hot dust and large molecules, and velocity-resolved IRAM 30m CO(2-1) observations of the molecular gas. The [CII] intensity is tightly correlated with PAH emission in the IRAC 8$\mu$m band and far-infrared emission from warm dust. The correlation between [CII] and CO(2-1) is very different in the four subregions and is very sensitive to the detailed geometry. Constant-density PDR models are able to reproduce the observed [CII], CO(2-1), and integrated far-infrared (FIR) intensities. We observe strong variations in the photoelectric heating efficiency in the Veil Shell behind the Orion Bar and these variations are seemingly not related to the spectral properties of the PAHs. The [CII] emission from the Orion Nebula complex stems mainly from moderately illuminated PDR surfaces. Future observations with the James Webb Space Telescope can shine light on the PAH properties that may be linked to these variations.

IRAS 20319+3958 in Cygnus X South is a rare example of a free-floating globule (mass ~240 Msun, length ~1.5 pc) with an internal HII region created by the stellar feedback of embedded intermediate-mass stars, in particular, one Herbig Be star. Here, we present a Herschel/HIFI CII 158 mu map of the whole globule and a large set of other FIR lines (mid-to high-J CO lines observed with Herschel/PACS and SPIRE, the OI 63 mu line and the CO 16-15 line observed with upGREAT on SOFIA), covering the globule head and partly a position in the tail. The CII map revealed that the whole globule is probably rotating. Highly collimated, high-velocity CII emission is detected close to the Herbig Be star. We performed a PDR analysis using the KOSMA-tau PDR code for one position in the head and one in the tail. The observed FIR lines in the head can be reproduced with a two-component model: an extended, non-clumpy outer PDR shell and a clumpy, dense, and thin inner PDR layer, representing the interface between the HII region cavity and the external PDR. The modelled internal UV field of ~2500 Go is similar to what we obtained from the Herschel FIR fluxes, but lower than what we estimated from the census of the embedded stars. External illumination from the ~30 pc distant Cyg OB2 cluster, producing an UV field of ~150-600 G0 as an upper limit, is responsible for most of the CII emission. We report SOFIA-upGREAT spectroscopic imaging of the [C II] 158um spectral line, as well as a number of [O I] 63um spectra, across a 67x45 pc field toward the Sgr B region in our Galactic center. The fully-sampled and velocity-resolved [C II] images have 0.55 pc spatial and 1 km/s velocity resolutions. We find that Sgr B extends as a coherent structure spanning some 34 pc along the Galactic plane. Bright [C II] emission encompasses Sgr B1 (G0.5-0.0), the G0.6-0.0 HII region, and passes behind and beyond the luminous star forming cores toward Sgr B2 (G0.7-0.0). Sgr B is a major contributor to the entire Galactic center's [C II] luminosity, with surface brightness comparable to [C II] from the Arches region. [C II], 70um, and 20cm emission share nearly identical spatial distributions. Combined with the lack of [C II] self-absorption, this indicates that these probes trace UV on the near surfaces of more extended clouds visible in CO isotopologues and 160um continuum. Stars from regions of local star formation likely dominate the UV field. Photodissociation regions and HII regions contribute similar amounts of [C II] flux. The extreme star formation cores of Sgr B2 contribute negligible amounts to the total [C II] intensity from the Sgr B region. Velocity fields and association with a narrow dust lane indicate that they may have been produced in a local cloud-cloud collision. The cores are likely local analogs of the intense star formation regions where ideas to explain the "C+ deficit" in ultra-luminous galaxies can be tested., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures. Context. The [CII] 158micron far-infrared fine-structure line is one of the dominant cooling lines of the star-forming interstellar medium (ISM). Hence [CII] emission originates in and thus can be used to trace a range of ISM processes. Velocity-resolved large-scale mapping of [CII] in star-forming regions provides a unique perspective of the kinematics of these regions and their interactions with the exciting source of radiation. Aims. We explore the scientific applications of large-scale mapping of velocity-resolved [CII] observations. With the [CII] observations, we investigate the effect of stellar feedback on the ISM. We present the details of observation, calibration, and data reduction using a heterodyne array receiver mounted on an airborne observatory. Results. A square-degree [CII] map with a spectral resolution of 0.3 km/s is presented. The scientific potential of this data is summarized with discussion of mechanical and radiative stellar feedback, filament tracing using [CII], [CII] opacity effects, [CII] and carbon recombination lines, and [CII] interaction with the large molecular cloud. The data quality and calibration is discussed in detail, and new techniques are presented to mitigate the effects of unavoidable instrument deficiencies (e.g. baseline stability) and thus to improve the data quality. A comparison with a smaller [CII] map taken with the Herschel/Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) spectrometer is presented.

The [CII] $158\,\mu\mathrm{m}$ fine-structure line is one of the dominant coolants of the neutral interstellar medium. It is hence one of the brightest far-infrared emission lines and can be observed not only in star-forming regions throughout the Galaxy, but also in the diffuse interstellar medium and in distant galaxies. [CII] line emission has been suggested to be a powerful tracer of star-formation. We aim to understand the origin of [CII] emission and its relation to other tracers of interstellar gas and dust. This includes a study of the heating efficiency of interstellar gas as traced by the [CII] line to test models of gas heating. We make use of a one-square-degree map of velocity-resolved [CII] line emission towards the Orion Nebula complex, including M43 and NGC 1977. The [CII] intensity is tightly correlated with PAH emission in the IRAC $8\,\mu\mathrm{m}$ band and far-infrared emission from warm dust. The correlation between [CII] and CO(2-1) is affected by the detailed geometry of the region. We find particularly low [CII]-over-FIR intensity ratios towards large columns of (warm and cold) dust, which suggest the interpretation of the "[CII] deficit" in terms of a "FIR excess". A slight decrease in the FIR line-over-continuum intensity ratio can be attributed to a decreased heating efficiency of the gas. We find that, at the mapped spatial scales, predictions of the star-formation rate from [CII] emission underestimate the star-formation rate calculated from YSO counts in the Orion Nebula complex by an order of magnitude. [CII] emission from the Orion Nebula complex arises dominantly in the cloud surfaces, many viewed in edge-on geometry. [CII] emission from extended faint cloud surfaces may contribute significantly to the total [CII] emission on galactic scales.

We unveil the stellar wind driven shell of the luminous massive star-forming region of RCW 49 using SOFIA FEEDBACK observations of the [CII] 158 $\mu$m line. The complementary dataset of the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO J = 3 - 2 transitions is observed by the APEX telescope and probes the dense gas toward RCW 49. Using the spatial and spectral resolution provided by the SOFIA and APEX telescopes, we disentangle the shell from a complex set of individual components of gas centered around RCW 49. We find that the shell of radius ~ 6 pc is expanding at a velocity of 13 km s$^{-1}$ toward the observer. Comparing our observed data with the ancillary data at X-Ray, infrared, sub-millimeter and radio wavelengths, we investigate the morphology of the region. The shell has a well defined eastern arc, while the western side is blown open and is venting plasma further into the west. Though the stellar cluster, which is ~ 2 Myr old gave rise to the shell, it only gained momentum relatively recently as we calculate the shell's expansion lifetime ~ 0.27 Myr, making the Wolf-Rayet star WR20a a likely candidate responsible for the shell's re-acceleration., Comment: 31 pages, 17 figures

The early B star S1 in the Rho Ophiuchus cloud excites an HII region and illuminates a large egg-shaped photodissociation (PDR) cavity. The PDR is restricted to the west and south-west by the dense molecular Rho Oph A ridge, expanding more freely into the diffuse low density cloud to the north-east. We analyze new SOFIA GREAT, GMRT and APEX data together with archival data from Herschel/PACS, JCMT/HARPS to study the properties of the photo-irradiated ionized and neutral gas in this region. The tracers include [C II] at 158 micron, [O I] at 63 and 145 micron, J=6-5 transitions of CO and 13CO, HCO+ (4-3), radio continuum at 610 and 1420 MHz and HI at 21 cm. The PDR emission is strongly red-shifted to the south-east of the nebula, and primarily blue-shifted on the north western side. The [C II] and and [O I]63 spectra are strongly self-absorbed over most of the PDR. By using the optically thin counterparts, [13C II] and [O I]145 respectively, we conclude that the self-absorption is dominated by the warm (>80 K) foreground PDR gas and not by the surrounding cold molecular cloud. We estimate the column densities of C+ and O of the PDR to be 3e18 and 2e19 cm^-2, respectively. Comparison of stellar far-ultraviolet flux and reprocessed infrared radiation suggest enhanced clumpiness of the gas to the north-west. Analysis of the emission from the PDR gas suggests the presence of at least three density components consisting of high density (10^6 cm^-3) clumps, medium density (10^4 cm^-3) and diffuse (10^3 cm^-3) interclump medium. The medium density component primarily contributes to the thermal pressure of the PDR gas which is in pressure equilibrium with the molecular cloud to the west. We find that the PDR is tilted and warped with the south-eastern side of the cavity being denser on the front and the north-western side being denser on the rear., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

The IRDC SDC335.579-0.292 (SDC335) is a massive star-forming cloud found to be globally collapsing towards one of the most massive star forming cores in the Galaxy. SDC335 hosts three high-mass protostellar objects at early stages of their evolution and archival ALMA Cycle 0 data indicate the presence of at least one molecular outflow in the region. Observations of molecular outflows from massive protostellar objects allow us to estimate the accretion rates of the protostars as well as to assess the disruptive impact that stars have on their natal clouds. The aim of this work is to identify and analyse the properties of the protostellar-driven molecular outflows within SDC335 and use these outflows to help refine the properties of the protostars. We imaged the molecular outflows in SDC335 using new data from the ATCA of SiO and Class I CH$_3$OH maser emission (~3 arcsec) alongside observations of four CO transitions made with APEX and archival ALMA CO, $^{13}$CO (~1 arcsec), and HNC data. We introduced a generalised argument to constrain outflow inclination angles based on observed outflow properties. We used the properties of each outflow to infer the accretion rates on the protostellar sources driving them and to deduce the evolutionary characteristics of the sources. We identify three molecular outflows in SDC335, one associated with each of the known compact HII regions. The outflow properties show that the SDC335 protostars are in the early stages (Class 0) of their evolution, with the potential to form stars in excess of 50 M$_{\odot}$. The measured total accretion rate onto the protostars is $1.4(\pm 0.1) \times 10^{-3}$M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, comparable to the total mass infall rate toward the cloud centre on parsec scales of 2.5$(\pm 1.0) \times 10^{-3}$M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, suggesting a near-continuous flow of material from cloud to core scales. Supernovae remnants (SNRs) represent a major feedback source from stars on the interstellar medium of galaxies. During the latest stage of supernovae explosions, shock waves produced by the initial blast modify the chemistry of gas and dust, inject kinetic energy in the surroundings, and may alter star formation characteristics. Simultaneously, gamma-ray emission is generated by the interaction between the ambiant medium and the cosmic rays. We study the stellar and interstellar contents of IC443, an evolved shell type SNR at a distance of 1.9 kpc, with an estimated age of 30 kyr. We aim to measure the mass of the gas within the extended G region, which corresponds to the peak of gamma-ray emission detected by VERITAS and Fermi. We performed 10'x10' mapped observations of 12CO and 13CO J=1-0, J=2-1 and J=3-2 pure rotational lines, as well as C18O J=1-0 and J=2-1 obtained with the IRAM-30m and APEX telescopes. We first compared our data with local thermodynamic equilbrium (LTE) models. We estimated the optical depth of each line from the emission of the isotopologues 13CO and C18O. We used the population diagram and large velocity gradient (LVG) assumption to measure the column density, mass, and kinetic temperature of the gas using 12CO and 13CO lines. We used complementary data (stars, gas, and dust at multiple wavelengths) and infrared point source catalogues to search for protostar candidates. Our results emphasize how the mass associated with the ring-like structure and the cloudlet cannot be overlooked when quantifying the interaction of cosmic rays with the dense local medium. Additionally, the presence of numerous possible protostars in the region might represent a fresh source of CR, which must also be taken into account in the interpretation of gamma-ray observations in this region.

Context. Dense molecular filaments are ubiquituous in the interstellar medium, yet their internal physical conditions and formation mechanism remain debated. Aims. We study the kinematics and physical conditions in the Musca filament and the Chamaeleon-Musca complex to constrain the physics of filament formation. Methods. We produced CO(2-1) isotopologue maps with the APEX telescope that cut through the Musca filament. We further study a NANTEN2 $^{12}$CO(1-0) map of the Musca cloud and the HI emission of the Chamaeleon-Musca complex. Results. The Musca cloud contains multiple velocity components. Radiative transfer modelling of the CO emission indicates that the Musca filament consists of a cold ($\sim$10 K), dense (n$_{H_2}\sim$10$^4$ cm$^{-3}$) crest, which is best described with a cylindrical geometry. Connected to the crest, a separate gas component at T$\sim$15 K and n$_{H_2}\sim$10$^3$ cm$^{-3}$ is found, the so-called strands. The filament crest has a transverse velocity gradient that is linked to the kinematics of the nearby ambient cloud. Studying the large scale kinematics, we find coherence of the asymmetric kinematics from the 50 pc HI cloud down to the Musca filament. We also report a strong [C$^{18}$O]/[$^{13}$CO] abundance drop by an order of magnitude from the filament crest to the strands over a distance $<$ 0.2 pc in a weak far-ultraviolet (FUV) field. Conclusions. The dense Musca filament crest is a long-lived (several crossing times), dynamic structure that can form stars in the near future because of continuous mass accretion. This mass accretion appears to be triggered by a HI cloud-cloud collision, which bends the magnetic field around dense filaments. This bending of the magnetic field is then responsible for the observed asymmetric accretion scenario of the Musca filament, which is, for instance, seen as a V-shape in the position-velocity (PV) diagram., Comment: 24 pages, 26 figures

NGC 7538 IRS 1 is a very young embedded O star driving an ionized jet and accreting mass with an accretion rate > 10^-4 Msun/year, which is quenching the hypercompact HII region. We use SOFIA GREAT data, Herschel PACS and SPIRE archive data, SOFIA FORCAST archive data, Onsala 20m and CARMA data, and JCMT archive data to determine the properties of the O star and its outflow. IRS 1 appears to be a single O-star with a bolometric luminosity > 1 10^5 Lsun, i.e. spectral type O7 or earlier. We find that IRS 1 drives a large molecular outflow with the blue-shifted northern outflow lobe extending to ~ 280" or 3.6 pc from IRS 1. Near IRS 1 the outflow is well aligned with the ionized jet. The dynamical time scale of the outflow is ~ 1.3 10^5 yr. The total outflow mass is ~ 130 Msun. We determine a mass outflow rate of 1.0 10^-3 Msun/yr, roughly consistent with the observed mass accretion rate. We observe strong high velocity [CII] emission in the outflow, confirming that strong UV radiation from IRS 1 escapes into the outflow lobes and is ionizing the gas. Many O stars may form like low mass stars, but with a higher accretion rate and in a denser environment. As long as the accretion stays high enough to quench the HII region, the star will continue to grow. FEEDBACK is a SOFIA legacy program dedicated to study the interaction of massive stars with their environment. It performs a survey of 11 galactic high mass star forming regions in the 158 $\mu$m (1.9 THz) line of CII and the 63 $\mu$m (4.7 THz) line of OI. We employ the 14 pixel LFA and 7 pixel HFA upGREAT instrument to spectrally resolve (0.24 MHz) these FIR structure lines. With an observing time of 96h, we will cover $\sim$6700 arcmin$^2$ at 14.1$''$ angular resolution for the CII line and 6.3$''$ for the OI line. The observations started in spring 2019 (Cycle 7). Our aim is to understand the dynamics in regions dominated by different feedback processes from massive stars such as stellar winds, thermal expansion, and radiation pressure, and to quantify the mechanical energy injection and radiative heating efficiency. The CII line provides the kinematics of the gas and is one of the dominant cooling lines of gas for low to moderate densities and UV fields. The OI line traces warm and high-density gas, excited in photodissociations regions with a strong UV field or by shocks. The source sample spans a broad range in stellar characteristics from single OB stars, to small groups of O stars, to rich young stellar clusters, to ministarburst complexes. It contains well-known targets such as Aquila, the Cygnus X region, M16, M17, NGC7538, NGC6334, Vela, and W43 as well as a selection of HII region bubbles, namely RCW49, RCW79, and RCW120. These CII maps, together with the less explored OI 63 $\mu$m line, provide an outstanding database for the community. They will be made publically available and will trigger further studies and follow-up observations.

Observations with the Herschel Space Telescope have established that most of the star forming gas is organised in interstellar filaments, a finding that is supported by numerical simulations of the supersonic interstellar medium (ISM) where dense filamentary structures are ubiquitous. We aim to understand the formation of these dense structures by performing observations covering the $^{12}$CO(4-3), $^{12}$CO(3-2), and various CO(2-1) isotopologue lines of the Musca filament, using the APEX telescope. The observed CO intensities and line ratios cannot be explained by PDR (photodissociation region) emission because of the low ambient far-UV field that is strongly constrained by the non-detections of the [C II] line at 158 $\mu$m and the [O I] line at 63 $\mu$m, observed with the upGREAT receiver on SOFIA, as well as a weak [C I] 609 $\mu$m line detected with APEX. We propose that the observations are consistent with a scenario in which shock excitation gives rise to warm and dense gas close to the highest column density regions in the Musca filament. Using shock models, we find that the CO observations can be consistent with excitation by J-type low-velocity shocks. A qualitative comparison of the observed CO spectra with synthetic observations of dynamic filament formation simulations shows a good agreement with the signature of a filament accretion shock that forms a cold and dense filament from a converging flow. The Musca filament is thus found to be dense molecular post-shock gas. Filament accretion shocks that dissipate the supersonic kinetic energy of converging flows in the ISM may thus play a prominent role in the evolution of cold and dense filamentary structures., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures

The Orion Molecular Cloud is the nearest massive-star forming region. Massive stars have profound effects on their environment due to their strong radiation fields and stellar winds. Velocity-resolved observations of the [CII] $158\,\mu\mathrm{m}$ fine-structure line allow us to study the kinematics of UV-illuminated gas. Here, we present a square-degree-sized map of [CII] emission from the Orion Nebula complex obtained by the upGREAT instrument onboard SOFIA, covering the entire Orion Nebula (M42) plus M43 and the nebulae NGC 1973, 1975, and 1977. We compare the stellar characteristics of these three regions with the kinematics of the expanding bubbles surrounding them. The bubble blown by the O7V star $\theta^1$ Ori C in the Orion Nebula expands rapidly, at $13\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$. Simple analytical models reproduce the characteristics of the hot interior gas and the neutral shell of this wind-blown bubble and give us an estimate of the expansion time of $0.2\,\mathrm{Myr}$. M43 with the B0.5V star NU Ori also exhibits an expanding bubble structure, with an expansion velocity of $6\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$. Comparison with analytical models for the pressure-driven expansion of H\,{\sc ii} regions gives an age estimate of $0.02\,\mathrm{Myr}$. The bubble surrounding NGC 1973, 1975, and 1977 with the central B1V star 42 Orionis expands at $1.5\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$, likely due to the over-pressurized ionized gas as in the case of M43. We derive an age of $0.4\,\mathrm{Myr}$ for this structure. We conclude that the bubble of the Orion Nebula is driven by the mechanical energy input by the strong stellar wind from $\theta^1$ Ori C, while the bubbles associated with M43 and NGC 1977 are caused by the thermal expansion of the gas ionized by their central later-type massive stars.

Context: Atomic and molecular cloud formation is a dynamical process. However, kinematic signatures of these processes are still observationally poorly constrained. Methods: Targeting the cloud-scale environment of the prototypical infrared dark cloud G28.3, we employ spectral line imaging observations of the two atomic lines HI and [CI] as well as molecular lines observations in 13CO in the 1--0 and 3--2 transitions. The analysis comprises investigations of the kinematic properties of the different tracers, estimates of the mass flow rates, velocity structure functions, a Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) study as well as comparisons to simulations. Results: The central IRDC is embedded in a more diffuse envelope of cold neutral medium (CNM) traced by HI self-absorption (HISA) and molecular gas. The spectral line data as well as the HOG and structure function analysis indicate a possible kinematic decoupling of the HI from the other gas compounds. Spectral analysis and position-velocity diagrams reveal two velocity components that converge at the position of the IRDC. Estimated mass flow rates appear rather constant from the cloud edge toward the center. The velocity structure function analysis is consistent with gas flows being dominated by the formation of hierarchical structures. Conclusions: The observations and analysis are consistent with a picture where the IRDC G28 is formed at the center of two converging gas flows. While the approximately constant mass flow rates are consistent with a self-similar, gravitationally driven collapse of the cloud, external compression by, e.g., spiral arm shocks or supernovae explosions cannot be excluded yet. Aims: Our aim is to identify the dominant molecular cooling lines and characteristic emission features in the 1.3 mm window of distinct regions in the northern part of the Orion A molecular cloud. By defining and analysing template regions, we also intend to help with the interpretation of observations from more distant sources which cannot be easily spatially resolved. Methods: We analyse an imaging line survey covering the area of OMC-1 to OMC-3 from 200.2 to 281.8 GHz obtained with the PI230 receiver at the APEX telescope. Masks are used to define regions with distinct properties (e.g. column density or temperature ranges) from which we obtain averaged spectra. Lines of 29 molecular species (55 isotopologues) are fitted for each region to obtain the respective total intensity. Results: We find that strong sources like Orion KL have a clear impact on the emission on larger scales. Although not spatially extended, their line emission contributes substantially to spectra averaged over large regions. Conversely, the emission signatures of dense, cold regions like OMC-2 and OMC-3 (e.g. enhanced N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ emission and low HCN/HNC ratio) seem to be difficult to pick up on larger scales, where they are eclipsed by signatures of stronger sources. In all regions, HCO$^{+}$ appears to contribute between 3% and 6% to the total intensity, the most stable value for all bright species. N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ shows the strongest correlation with column density, but not with typical high-density tracers like HCN, HCO$^{+}$, H$_{2}$CO, or HNC. Common line ratios associated with UV illumination, CN/HNC and CN/HCO$^{+}$, show ambiguous results on larger scales, suggesting that the identification of UV illuminated material may be more challenging. Context. The [CII] 158 {\mu}m far-infrared (FIR) fine-structure line is one of the most important cooling lines of the star-forming interstellar medium (ISM). High spectral resolution observations have shown complex structures in the line profiles of the [CII] emission. Aims. Our aim is to determine whether the complex profiles observed in [^{12}CII] are due to individual velocity components along the line-of-sight or to self-absorption based on a comparison of the [^{12}CII] and isotopic [^{13}CII] line profiles. Methods. Deep integrations with the SOFIA/upGREAT 7-pixel array receiver in M43, Horsehead~PDR, Monoceros~R2, and M17~SW allow for the detection of optically thin [^{13}CII] emission lines, along with the [^{12}CII] emission lines, with a high signal-to-noise ratio. We first derived the [^{12}CII] optical depth and the [CII] column density from a single component model. However, the complex line profiles observed require a double layer model with an emitting background and an absorbing foreground. A multi-component velocity fit allows us to derive the physical conditions of the [CII] gas: column density and excitation temperature. Results. We find moderate to high [^{12}CII] optical depths in all four sources and self-absorption of [^{12}CII] in Mon R2 and M17 SW. The high column density of the warm background emission corresponds to an equivalent Av of up to 41 mag. The foreground absorption requires substantial column densities of cold and dense [CII] gas, with an equivalent Av ranging up to about 13 mag. Conclusions. The column density of the warm background material requires multiple photon-dominated region (PDR) surfaces stacked along the line of sight and in velocity. The substantial column density of dense and cold foreground [CII] gas detected in absorption cannot be explained with any known scenario and we can only speculate on its origins, Comment: 40 pages, 49 figures

OMC-2/3 is one of the nearest embedded cluster-forming region that includes intermediate-mass protostars at early stages of evolution. A previous CO (3--2) mapping survey towards this region revealed outflow activity related to sources at different evolutionary phases. The present work aims to study the warm gas in the high-velocity emission from several outflows found in CO (3--2) emission by previous observations, determine their physical conditions, and make comparison with previous results in low-mass star-forming regions. We use the CHAMP+ heterodyne array on the APEX telescope to map the CO (6--5) and CO (7--6) emission in the OMC-2 FIR 6 and OMC-3 MMS 1-6 regions, and to observe $^{13}$CO (6--5) at selected positions. We analyze these data together with previous CO (3--2) observations. In addition, we mapped the SiO (5--4) emission in OMC-2 FIR 6. The CO (6--5) emission was detected in most of the outflow lobes in the mapped regions, while the CO (7--6) was found mostly from the OMC-3 outflows. In the OMC-3 MMS 5 outflow, a previously undetected extremely high velocity gas was found in CO (6--5). This extremely high velocity emission arises from the regions close to the central object MMS 5. Radiative transfer models revealed that the high-velocity gas from MMS 5 outflow consists of gas with $n_{\rm H_2}=$10$^4$--10$^{5}$ cm$^{-3}$ and $T>$ 200 K, similar to what is observed in young Class 0 low-mass protostars. For the other outflows, values of $n_{\rm H_2}>$10$^{4}$ cm$^{-3}$ were found. The physical conditions and kinematic properties of the young intermediate-mass outflows presented here are similar to those found in outflows from Class 0 low-mass objects. We have mapped the G287.84-0.82 cometary globule (with the Treasure Chest cluster embedded in it) in the South Pillars region of Carina (i) in [CII], 63micron [OI], and CO(11-10) using upGREAT on SOFIA and (ii) in J=2-1 transitions of CO, 13CO, C18O and J=3-2 transitions of H2CO using the APEX telescope in Chile. We probe the morphology, kinematics, and physical conditions of the molecular gas and the photon dominated regions (PDRs) in G287.84-0.82. The [CII] and [OI] emission suggest that the overall structure of the pillar (with red-shifted photo evaporating tails) is consistent with the effect of FUV radiation and winds from eta-Car and O stars in Trumpler 16. The gas in the head of the pillar is strongly influenced by the embedded cluster, whose brightest member is an O9.5V star, CPD-59 2661. The emission of the [CII] and [OI] lines peak at a position close to the embedded star, while all other tracers peak at another position lying to the north-east consistent with gas being compressed by the expanding PDR created by the embedded cluster. The molecular gas inside the globule is probed with the J=2-1 transitions of CO and isotopologues as well as H2CO, and analyzed using a non-LTE model (escape-probability approach), while we use PDR models to derive the physical conditions of the PDR. We identify at least two PDR gas components; the diffuse part (~10^4 cm^-3) is traced by [CII], while the dense (n~ 2-8x10^5 cm^-3) part is traced by [CII], [OI], CO(11-10). Using the F=2-1 transition of [13CII] detected at 50 positions in the region, we derive optical depths (0.9-5), excitation temperatures of [CII] (80-255 K), and N(C+) of 0.3-1x10^19 cm^-2. The total mass of the globule is ~1000 Msun, about half of which is traced by [CII]. The dense PDR gas has a thermal pressure of 10^7-10^8 K cm^-3, which is similar to the values observed in other regions., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics (abstract slightly abridged)

The D/H ratio in cometary water has been shown to vary between 1 and 3 times the Earth's oceans value, in both Oort cloud comets and Jupiter-family comets originating from the Kuiper belt. We present new sensitive spectroscopic observations of water isotopologues in the Jupiter-family comet 46P/Wirtanen carried out using the GREAT spectrometer aboard the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). The derived D/H ratio of $(1.61 \pm 0.65) \times 10^{-4}$ is the same as in the Earth's oceans. Although the statistics are limited, we show that interesting trends are already becoming apparent in the existing data. A clear anti-correlation is seen between the D/H ratio and the active fraction, defined as the ratio of the active surface area to the total nucleus surface. Comets with an active fraction above 0.5 typically have D/H ratios in water consistent with the terrestrial value. These hyperactive comets, such as 46P/Wirtanen, require an additional source of water vapor in their coma, explained by the presence of subliming icy grains expelled from the nucleus. The observed correlation may suggest that hyperactive comets belong to a population of ice-rich objects that formed just outside the snow line, or in the outermost regions of the solar nebula, from water thermally reprocessed in the inner disk that was transported outward during the early disk evolution. The observed anti-correlation between the active fraction and the nucleus size seems to argue against the first interpretation, as planetesimals near the snow line are expected to undergo rapid growth. Alternatively, isotopic properties of water outgassed from the nucleus and icy grains may be different due to fractionation effects at sublimation. In this case, all comets may share the same Earth-like D/H ratio in water, with profound implications for the early solar system and the origin of Earth's oceans., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

The accretion-driven outbursts of young FU Orionis-type stars may be a common stage of pre-main sequence evolution and can have a significant impact on the circumstellar environment as it pertains to the growth of solids and eventually planets. This episodic accretion is thought to be sustained by additional gas in-falling from the circumstellar envelope and disk. We present APEX observations of the CO gas in the envelope around V883 Orionis, a young outbursting star. The observations mapped the $^{12}$CO(4-3), $^{12}$CO(3-2), and $^{13}$CO(3-2) lines with the FLASH$^{+}$ instrument and the $^{12}$CO(6-5) line with the SEPIA instrument. We detected high signal-to-noise emission extending out to radii $>10000$ au and calculated integrated fluxes of $1100~\rm Jy~km~s^{-1}$ for $^{12}$CO(6-5), $2400~\rm Jy~km~s^{-1}$ for $^{12}$CO(4-3), $1600~\rm Jy~km~s^{-1}$ for $^{12}$CO(3-2), and $450~\rm Jy~km~s^{-1}$ for $^{13}$CO(3-2). We used the thermo-chemical code P{\small RO}D{\small I}M{\small O} to test several models and find the data are best described by an envelope structure with $\rm M_{env}\approx 0.2-0.4\,M_{\odot}$ and a mass-infall rate of $\rm \dot{M}_{inf}=1-2\times10^{-6}\,M_{\odot}\,yr^{-1}$. Aims: We study the spatial distribution and kinematics of water emission in a ~64 pc$^2$ region of the Galactic Center (GC) around Sgr A*. We also analyze the water excitation to derive the physical conditions and water abundances in the CND and the `quiescent clouds'. Methods: We presented the integrated intensity maps of the ortho 1$_{10}-1_{01}$, and para 2$_{02}-1_{11}$ and 1$_{11}-0_{00}$ water transitions observed with the HIFI instrument on board Herschel. To study the water excitation we used ground state ortho and para H$_2^{18}$O transitions. In our study, we also used SPIRE continuum measurements of the CND. Using a non-LTE radiative transfer code, the water line profiles and dust continuum were modeled. We also used a rotating ring model to reproduce the CND kinematics represented by the PV diagram. Results: We identify the water emission arising from the CND, the Western Streamer, and the 20 and 50 km s$^{-1}$ clouds. The ortho water maps show absorption structures in the range of [-220,10] km s$^{-1}$. The PV diagram shows that the 2$_{02}-1_{11}$ H$_2$O emission traces the CND. We derive high X$_{H_2O}$ of $\sim$(0.1-1.3)$\times$10$^{-5}$, V$_t$ of 14-23 km s$^{-1}$ and T$_d$ of 15-45 K for the CND, and the lower X$_{\rm H_2O}$ of 4$\times$10$^{-8}$ and V$_t$ of 9 km s$^{-1}$ for the 20 km s$^{-1}$ cloud. Collisional excitation and dust effects are responsible for the water excitation in the southwest lobe of the CND and the 20 km s$^{-1}$ cloud, whereas only collisions can account for the water excitation in the northeast lobe of the CND. We propose that the water vapor in the CND is caused by grain sputtering by shocks of 10-20 km s$^{-1}$, with some contribution of high temperature and cosmic-ray chemistries plus a PDR chemistry. The low X$_{\rm H_2O}$ derived for the 20 km s$^{-1}$ cloud could be partially a consequence of the water freeze-out on grains., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures

Massive stars inject mechanical and radiative energy into the surrounding environment, which stirs it up, heats the gas, produces cloud and intercloud phases in the interstellar medium, and disrupts molecular clouds (the birth sites of new stars). Stellar winds, supernova explosions and ionization by ultraviolet photons control the lifetimes of molecular clouds. Theoretical studies predict that momentum injection by radiation should dominate that by stellar winds, but this has been difficult to assess observationally. Velocity-resolved large-scale images in the fine-structure line of ionized carbon ([C II]) provide an observational diagnostic for the radiative energy input and the dynamics of the interstellar medium around massive stars. Here we report observations of a one-square-degree region (about 7 parsecs in diameter) of Orion molecular core -- the region nearest to Earth that exhibits massive-star formation -- at a resolution of 16 arcseconds (0.03 parsecs) in the [C II] line at 1.9 terahertz (158 micrometres). The results reveal that the stellar wind originating from the massive star ${\theta}^{1}$ Orionis C has swept up the surrounding material to create a bubble roughly four parsecs in diameter with a 2,600-solar-mass shell, which is expanding at 13 kilometres per second. This finding demonstrates that the mechanical energy from the stellar wind is converted very efficiently into kinetic energy of the shell and causes more disruption of the Orion molecular core 1 than do photo-ionization and evaporation or future supernova explosions., Comment: Published in Nature

We present the performance of the upGREAT heterodyne array receivers on the SOFIA telescope after several years of operations. This instrument is a multi-pixel high resolution (R > 10^7) spectrometer for the Stratospheric Observatory for Far-Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). The receivers use 7-pixel subarrays configured in a hexagonal layout around a central pixel. The low frequency array receiver (LFA) has 2x7 pixels (dual polarization), and presently covers the 1.83-2.06 THz frequency range, which allows to observe the [CII] and [OI] lines at 158 um and 145 um wavelengths. The high frequency array (HFA) covers the [OI] line at 63 um and is equipped with one polarization at the moment (7 pixels, which can be upgraded in the near future with a second polarization array). The 4.7 THz array has successfully flown using two separate quantum-cascade laser local oscillators from two different groups. NASA completed the development, integration and testing of a dual-channel closed-cycle cryocooler system, with two independently operable He compressors, aboard SOFIA in early 2017 and since then, both arrays can be operated in parallel using a frequency separating dichroic mirror. HH 50138 is one of the brightest B[e] stars at a distance of $\sim$ 380 pc with strong infrared excess. The star was observed in [O I] 63 $\mu$m and [C II] 158 $\mu$m with high velocity resolution with upGREAT on SOFIA. The velocity resolved [O I] emission provides evidence for a large gas-disk, $\sim$ 760 au in size, around HD 50138. Whereas previous interferometric observations give strong evidence for a hot gas and dust disk in Keplerian rotation, our bservations are the first to provide unambiguous evidence for a large warm disk around the star. Herschel/PACS observations showed that the [C II] emission is extended, therefore the [C II] emission most likely originates in an ionized gas shell created by a past outflow event. We confirm the isolated nature of HD 50138. It is far from any star forming region and has low proper motion. Neither is there any sign of a remnant cloud from which it could have formed. The extended disk around the star appears carbon poor. It shows OH and [O I] emission, but no CO. The CO abundance appears to be at least an order of magnitude lower than that of OH. Furthermore $^{13}$CO is enriched by more than a factor of five, confirming that the star is not a Herbig Be star. Finally we note that our high spectral resolution [O I] and [C II] observations provide a very accurate heliocentric velocity of the star, 40.8 $\pm$ 0.2 km~s$^{-1}$., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, to be published in ApJ

The central area (40"x40") of the bipolar nebula S106 was mapped in the OI line at 63.2 micron with high angular (6") and spectral resolution, using GREAT on board SOFIA. The OI emission distribution is compared to the CO 16-15, CII 158 micron, and CO 11-10 lines, mm-molecular lines, and continuum. It is composed of several velocity components in the range from -30 km/s to 25 km/s. The high-velocity blue- and redshifted emission can be explained as arising from accelerated photodissociated (PDR) gas associated with a dark lane close to the massive binary system S106 IR, and from shocks caused by the stellar wind and/or a disk--envelope interaction. At velocities from -9 to -4 km/s and 0.5 to 8 km/s line wings are observed that we attribute to cooling in PDRs created by the ionizing radiation impinging on the cavity walls. The bulk velocity range is dominated by PDR emission from the clumpy molecular cloud. Modelling the emission in the different velocity ranges with the KOSMA-tau code constrains a radiation field chi of a few times 10^4 and densities n of a few times 10^4 cm^-3. Considering self-absorption of the OI line results in higher densities (up to 10^6 cm^-3) only for the gas component seen at high blue- and red velocities. The dark lane has a mass of 275 Msun and shows a velocity difference of 1.4 km/s along its projected length of 1 pc, determined from H13CO+ 1-0 mapping. It can be interpreted as a massive accretion flow, or the remains of it, linked to S106 IR/FIR. The most likely explanation is that the binary system is at a stage of its evolution where gas accretion is counteracted by the stellar winds and radiation, leading to the very complex observed spatial and kinematic emission distribution of the various tracers., Comment: Final version as it will appear in Asronomy&Astrophysics, accepted 22.5.2018

We present a large set of spectral lines detected in the $40"$ central region of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. Observations were obtained with the three instruments SPIRE, PACS and HIFI on board the Herschel Space Observatory, upGREAT on board of the SOFIA airborne observatory, and the ground based APEX telescope. Combining the spectral and photometry products of SPIRE and PACS we model the dust continuum Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) and the most complete $^{12}$CO Line SED reported so far toward the nuclear region of NGC 253. Properties and excitation of the molecular gas were derived from a three-component non-LTE radiative transfer model, using the SPIRE $^{13}$CO lines and ground based observations of the lower-$J$ $^{13}$CO and HCN lines, to constrain the model parameters. Three dust temperatures were identified from the continuum emission, and three components are needed to fit the full CO LSED. Only the third CO component (fitting mostly the HCN and PACS $^{12}$CO lines) is consistent with a shock/mechanical heating scenario. A hot core chemistry is also argued as a plausible scenario to explain the high-$J$ $^{12}$CO lines detected with PACS. The effect of enhanced cosmic ray ionization rates, however, cannot be ruled out, and is expected to play a significant role in the diffuse and dense gas chemistry. This is supported by the detection of ionic species like OH$^+$ and H$_2$O$^+$, as well as the enhanced fluxes of the OH lines with respect to those of H$_2$O lines detected in both PACS and SPIRE spectrum., Comment: 36 pages, 16 figures, submitted, reviewed and accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal on April 12th 2018

We analyze a [C II] 158 micron map obtained with the L2 GREAT receiver on SOFIA of the emission/reflection nebula illuminated by the early B star S1 in the rho-OphA cloud core. This data set has been complemented with maps of CO(3-2), 13CO(3-2) and C18O(3-2), observed as a part of the JCMT Gould Belt Survey, with archival HCO^+(4-3) JCMT data, as well as with [O I] 63 and 145 micron imaging with Herschel/PACS. The [C II] emission is completely dominated by the strong PDR emission from the nebula surrounding S1 expanding into the dense Oph A molecular cloud west and south of S1. The [C II] emission is significantly blue shifted relative to the CO spectra and also relative to the systemic velocity, particularly in the northwestern part of the nebula. The [C II] lines are broader towards the center of the S1 nebula and narrower towards the PDR shell. The [C II] lines are strongly self-absorbed over an extended region in the S1 PDR. Based on the strength of the [13C II] F = 2-1 hyperfine component, [C II] is significantly optically thick over most of the nebula. CO and 13CO(3-2) spectra are strongly self-absorbed, while C18O(3-2) is single peaked and centered in the middle of the self-absorption. We have used a simple two-layer LTE model to characterize the background and foreground cloud contributing to the [C II] emission. From this analysis we estimate the extinction due to the foreground cloud to be ~9.9 mag, which is slightly less than the reddening estimated towards S1. Since some of the hot gas in the PDR is not traced by low J CO emission, this result appears quite plausible. Using a plane parallel PDR model with the observed [OI(145)]/[C II] brightness ratio and an estimated FUV intensity of 3100-5000 G0 suggests that the density of the [C II] emitting gas is ~3-4x10^3 cm^-3., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Messier 8 is one of the brightest HII regions in the sky. Using SOFIA, APEX 12 m and IRAM 30 m telescopes, we have performed a comprehensive imaging survey of the emission from the [CII], [CI] and CO isotopologues within 1.3 $\times$ 1.3 pc around the dominant Herschel 36 (Her 36) stellar system. To further explore the morphology of the region we compare archival infrared, optical and radio images of the nebula with our newly obtained [CII] and CO data. We perform a quantitative analysis, using both LTE and non-LTE methods to determine the abundances of some of the observed species as well as kinetic temperatures and volume densities. Bright CO, [CII] and [CI] emission has been found towards the HII region and the photodissociation region (PDR) in M8. Our analysis places the bulk of the molecular material in the background of the nebulosity illuminated by the bright stellar systems Her 36 and 9 Sagitarii. Since the emission from all observed atomic and molecular tracers peaks at or close to the position of Her 36, we conclude that the star is still physically close to its natal dense cloud core and heats it. A veil of warm gas moves away from Her 36 toward the Sun and its associated dust contributes to the foreground extinction in the region. One of the most prominent star forming regions in M8, the Hourglass Nebula, is particularly bright due to cracks in this veil close to Her 36. By using radiative transfer modeling of different transitions of CO isotopologues, we obtain H$_{2}$ densities ranging from $\sim 10^{4} - 10^{6}$ cm$^{-3}$ and kinetic temperatures of 100 $-$ 150 K in the bright PDR caused by Her 36., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A)

We aim to directly determine the kinetic temperature and spatial density with formaldehyde for the $\sim$100 brightest ATLASGAL-selected clumps at 870 $\mu$m representing various evolutionary stages of high-mass star formation. Ten transitions ($J$ = 3-2 and 4-3) of ortho- and para-H$_2$CO near 211, 218, 225, and 291 GHz were observed with the APEX 12 m telescope. Using non-LTE models with RADEX, we derive the gas kinetic temperature and spatial density using the measured p-H$_2$CO 3$_{21}$-2$_{20}$/3$_{03}$-2$_{02}$, 4$_{22}$-3$_{21}$/4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$, and 4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$/3$_{03}$-2$_{02}$ ratios. The gas kinetic temperatures derived from the p-H$_2$CO 3$_{21}$-2$_{20}$/3$_{03}$-2$_{02}$ and 4$_{22}$-3$_{21}$/4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$ line ratios are high, ranging from 43 to $>$300 K with an unweighted average of 91 $\pm$ 4 K. Deduced $T_{\rm kin}$ values from the $J$ = 3-2 and 4-3 transitions are similar. Spatial densities of the gas derived from the p-H$_2$CO 4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$/3$_{03}$-2$_{02}$ line ratios yield 0.6-8.3 $\times$ 10$^6$ cm$^{-3}$ with an unweighted average of 1.5 ($\pm$0.1) $\times$ 10$^6$ cm$^{-3}$. A comparison of kinetic temperatures derived from p-H$_2$CO, NH$_3$, and the dust emission indicates that p-H$_2$CO traces a distinctly higher temperature than the NH$_3$ (2,2)/(1,1) transitions and the dust, tracing heated gas more directly associated with the star formation process. The H$_2$CO linewidths are found to be correlated with bolometric luminosity and increase with the evolutionary stage of the clumps, which suggests that higher luminosities tend to be associated with a more turbulent molecular medium. It seems that the spatial densities measured with H$_2$CO do not vary significantly with the evolutionary stage of the clumps. Aims: To reveal the morphology, chemical composition, kinematics and to establish the main processes prevalent in the gas at the foot points of the giant molecular loops (GMLs) in the Galactic center region Methods: Using the 22-m Mopra telescope, we mapped the M$-3.8+0.9$ molecular cloud, placed at the foot points of a giant molecular loop, in 3-mm range molecular lines. To derive the molecular hydrogen column density, we also observed the $^{13}$CO $(2-1)$ line at 1 mm using the 12-m APEX telescope. From the 3 mm observations 12 molecular species were detected, namely HCO$^+$, HCN, H$^{13}$CN, HNC, SiO, CS, CH$_3$OH, N$_2$H$^+$, SO, HNCO, OCS, and HC$_3$N. Results: Maps revealing the morphology and kinematics of the M$-3.8+0.9$ molecular cloud in different molecules are presented. We identified six main molecular complexes. We derive fractional abundances in 11 selected positions of the different molecules assuming local thermodynamical equilibrium. Conclusions: Most of the fractional abundances derived for the M$-3.8+0.9$ molecular cloud are very similar over the whole cloud. However, the fractional abundances of some molecules show significant difference with respect to those measured in the central molecular zone (CMZ). The abundances of the shock tracer SiO are very similar between the GMLs and the CMZ. The methanol emission is the most abundant specie in the GMLs. This indicates that the gas is likely affected by moderate $\sim $ 30 km s$^{-1}$ or even high velocity (50 km s$^{-1}$) shocks, consistent with the line profile observed toward one of the studied position. The origin of the shocks is likely related to the flow of the gas throughout the GMLs towards the foot points., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present a systematic survey of multiple velocity-resolved H$_2$O spectra using Herschel/HIFI towards nine nearby actively star forming galaxies. The ground-state and low-excitation lines (E$_{\rm up}\,\le 130\,{\rm K}$) show profiles with emission and absorption blended together, while absorption-free medium-excitation lines ($130\,{\rm K}\, \le\, E_{\rm up}\,\le\,350\,{\rm K}$) typically display line shapes similar to CO. We analyze the HIFI observation together with archival SPIRE/PACS H$_2$O data using a state-of-the-art 3D radiative transfer code which includes the interaction between continuum and line emission. The water excitation models are combined with information on the dust- and CO spectral line energy distribution to determine the physical structure of the interstellar medium (ISM). We identify two ISM components that are common to all galaxies: A warm ($T_{\rm dust}\,\sim\,40-70\,{\rm K}$), dense ($n({\rm H})\,\sim\,10^5-10^6\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$) phase which dominates the emission of medium-excitation H$_2$O lines. This gas phase also dominates the FIR emission and the CO intensities for $J_{\rm up} > 8$. In addition a cold ($T_{\rm dust}\,\sim\,20-30\,{\rm K}$), dense ($n({\rm H})\sim\,10^4- 10^5\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$) more extended phase is present. It outputs the emission in the low-excitation H$_2$O lines and typically also produces the prominent line absorption features. For the two ULIRGs in our sample (Arp 220 and Mrk 231) an even hotter and more compact (R$_s\,\le\,100$ pc) region is present which is possibly linked to AGN activity. We find that collisions dominate the water excitation in the cold gas and for lines with $E_{\rm up}\le300\,{\rm K}$ and $E_{\rm up}\le800\,{\rm K}$ in the warm and hot component, respectively. In molecular outflows from forming low-mass protostars, most oxygen is expected to be locked up in water. However, Herschel observations have shown that typically an order of magnitude or more of the oxygen is still unaccounted for. To test if the oxygen is instead in atomic form, SOFIA-GREAT observed the R1 position of the bright molecular outflow from NGC1333-IRAS4A. The [OI] 63 um line is detected and spectrally resolved. From an intensity peak at +15 km/s, the intensity decreases until +50 km/s. The profile is similar to that of high-velocity (HV) H2O and CO 16-15, the latter observed simultaneously with [OI]. A radiative transfer analysis suggests that ~15% of the oxygen is in atomic form toward this shock position. The CO abundance is inferred to be ~10^-4 by a similar analysis, suggesting that this is the dominant oxygen carrier in the HV component. These results demonstrate that a large portion of the observed [OI] emission is part of the outflow. Protostellar jets and outflows are key features of the star-formation process, and primary processes of the feedback of young stars on the interstellar medium. Understanding the underlying shocks is necessary to explain how jets and outflows are launched, and to quantify their chemical and energetic impacts on the surrounding medium. We performed a high-spectral resolution study of the [OI]$_{\rm 63 \mu m}$ emission in the outflow of the intermediate-mass Class 0 protostar Cep E-mm. We present observations of the OI $^3$P$_1 \rightarrow$ $^3$P$_2$, OH between $^2\Pi_{1/2}$ $J = 3/2$ and $J = 1/2$ at 1837.8 GHz, and CO (16-15) lines with SOFIA-GREAT at three positions in the Cep E outflow: mm (the driving protostar), BI (in the southern lobe), and BII (the terminal position in the southern lobe). The CO line is detected at all three positions. The OI line is detected in BI and BII, whereas the OH line is not detected. In BII, we identify three kinematical components in OI and CO, already detected in CO: the jet, the HH377 terminal bow-shock, and the outflow cavity. The OI column density is higher in the outflow cavity than in the jet, which itself is higher than in the terminal shock. The terminal shock is where the abundance ratio of OI to CO is the lowest (about 0.2), whereas the jet component is atomic (ratio $\sim$2.7). In the jet, we compare the OI observations with shock models that successfully fit the integrated intensity of 10 CO lines: these models do not fit the OI data. The high intensity of OI emission points towards the propagation of additional dissociative or alternative FUV-irradiated shocks, where the illumination comes from the shock itself. (Abridged) Aims: We aim to use the progressive heating of the gas caused by the feedback of high-mass young stellar objects (YSOs) to prove the statistical validity of the most common schemes used to define an evolutionary sequence for high-mass clumps, and characterise the sensitivity of different tracers to this process. Methods: From the spectroscopic follow-ups of the ATLASGAL TOP100 sample, we selected several multiplets of CH3CN, CH3CCH, and CH3OH emission lines to derive and compare the physical properties of the gas in the clumps along the evolutionary sequence. Our findings are compared with results obtained from CO isotopologues, dust, and NH3 from previous studies on the same sample. Results: The chemical properties of each species have a major role on the measured physical properties. Low temperatures are traced by NH3, CH3OH, and CO (in the early phases), the warm and dense envelope can be probed with CH3CN, CH3CCH, and, in evolved sources via CO isotopologues. CH3OH and CH3CN are also abundant in the hot cores, and their high-excitation transitions may be good tools to study the kinematics in the hot gas surrounding the YSOs that these clumps are hosting. All tracers show, to different degrees, progressive warming with evolution. The relation between gas temperature and L/M is reproduced by a toy model of a spherical, internally heated clump. Conclusions: The evolutionary sequence defined for the clumps is statistically valid and we could identify the processes dominating in different intervals of L/M. For L/M<2Lsun/Msun a large quantity of gas is still being accumulated and compressed at the bottom of the potential well. Between 2Lsun/Msun40Lsun/Msun HII regions become common, showing that dissipation of the parental clump dominates.

FUors are young stellar objects experiencing large optical outbursts due to highly enhanced accretion from the circumstellar disk onto the star. FUors are often surrounded by massive envelopes, which play a significant role in the outburst mechanism. Conversely, the subsequent eruptions might gradually clear up the obscuring envelope material and drive the protostar on its way to become a disk-only T Tauri star. Here we present an APEX $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO survey of eight southern and equatorial FUors. We measure the mass of the gaseous material surrounding our targets. We locate the source of the CO emission and derive physical parameters for the envelopes and outflows, where detected. Our results support the evolutionary scenario where FUors represent a transition phase from envelope-surrounded protostars to classical T Tauri stars., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the ApJ

The physical state of the gas in the central 500 pc of NGC~5128 (the radio galaxy Centaurus A - Cen A), was investigated using the far-infrared fine-structure lines of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, as well as the CO(4-3) molecular line. The circumnuclear disk (CND) is traced by emission from dust and the neutral gas ([CI] and CO). A gas outflow with a line-of-sight velocity of 60 km/s is evident in both species. The center of the CND is bright in [OI], [OIII], and [CII]; [OI]63mu emission dominates that of [CII] even though it is absorbed with optical depths of 1.0-1.5. The outflow is well-traced by the [NII] and [NIII] lines and also seen in the [CII] and [OIII] lines that peak in the center. Ionized gas densities are moderate in the CND and low everywhere else. Neutral gas densities range from 4000 per cm3 (outflow, extended thin disk ETD) to 20 000 per cm3 (CND). The CND radiation field is weak compared to the ETD starburst field. The outflow has a much stronger radiation field. The total mass of all the CND gas is 9 x 10^(7) M(o) and the mass of the outflowing gas is only 15%-30% of that. The outflow most likely originates from the shock-dominated CND cavity surrounding the central black hole. With a factor of three uncertainty, the mass outflow rate is about 2 M(o)/yr, a thousand times higher than the accretion rate of the black hole. Without replenishment, the CND will be depleted in 15-120 million years. However, the outflow velocity is well below the escape velocity., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. We report a discovery of shocked gas from the supernova remnant (SNR) G357.7+0.3. Our millimeter and submillimeter observations reveal broad molecular lines of CO(2-1), CO(3-2), CO(4-3), 13CO (2-1) and 13CO (3-2), HCO^+ and HCN using HHSMT, Arizona 12-Meter Telescope, APEX and MOPRA Telescope. The widths of the broad lines are 15-30 kms, and the detection of such broad lines is unambiguous, dynamic evidence showing that the SNR G357.7+0.3 is interacting with molecular clouds. The broad lines appear in extended regions (>4.5'x5'). We also present detection of shocked H2 emission in mid-infrared but lacking ionic lines using the Spitzer IRS observations to map a few arcmin area. The H2 excitation diagram shows a best-fit with a two-temperature LTE model with the temperatures of ~200 and 660 K. We observed [C II] at 158um and high-J CO(11-10) with the GREAT on SOFIA. The GREAT spectrum of [C II], a 3 sigma detection, shows a broad line profile with a width of 15.7 km/s that is similar to those of broad CO molecular lines. The line width of [C~II] implies that ionic lines can come from a low-velocity C-shock. Comparison of H2 emission with shock models shows that a combination of two C-shock models is favored over a combination of C- and J-shocks or a single shock. We estimate the CO density, column density, and temperature using a RADEX model. The best-fit model with n(H2) = 1.7x10^{4} cm^{-3}, N(CO) = 5.6x10^{16} cm^{-2}, and T = 75 K can reproduce the observed millimeter CO brightnesses., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures

We present a new multi-pixel high resolution (R >10^7) spectrometer for the Stratospheric Observatory for Far-Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). The receiver uses 2 x 7-pixel subarrays in orthogonal polarization, each in an hexagonal array around a central pixel. We present the first results for this new instrument after commissioning campaigns in May and December 2015 and after science observations performed in May 2016 . The receiver is designed to ultimately cover the full 1.8-2.5 THz frequency range but in its first implementation, the observing range was limited to observations of the [CII] line at 1.9 THz in 2015 and extended to 1.83-2.07 THz in 2016. The instrument sensitivities are state-of-the-art and the first scientific observations performed shortly after the commissioning confirm that the time efficiency for large scale imaging is improved by more than an order of magnitude as compared to single pixel receivers. An example of large scale mapping around the Horsehead Nebula is presented here illustrating this improvement. We present large-scale submm observations towards the Sgr A Complex covering ~300 arcmin2. These data were obtained in the frame of the HEXGAL Program with the Herschel-HIFI satellite and are complemented with submm observations obtained with the NANTEN2/SMART telescope as part of the NANTEN2/SMART Central Nuclear Zone Survey. The observed species are CO(4-3) observed with the NANTEN2/SMART telescope, and [CI](1-0), [CI](2-1), [NII](1-0), and [CII](3/2-1/2) observed with the Herschel-HIFI satellite. The observations are presented in a 1 km/s spectral resolution and a spatial resolution ranging from 46" to 28". The spectral coverage of the three lower frequency lines is +-200 km/s, while in the two high frequency lines, the upper LSR velocity limit is +94 km/s and +145 km/s for the [NII] and [CII] lines, respectively. The spatial distribution of the emission in all lines is very widespread. The bulk of the CO emission is found towards Galactic latitudes below the Galactic plane, and all the known molecular clouds are identified. Both neutral atomic carbon lines have their brightest emission associated with the +50 km/s cloud. Their spatial distribution at this LSR velocity describes a crescent-shape structure, which is probably the result of interaction with the energetic event (one or several supernovae explosions) that gave origin to the non-thermal Sgr A-East source. The [CII] and [NII] emissions have most of their flux associated with the thermal Arched-Filaments and the H Region and bright spots in [CII] emission towards the Central Nuclear Disk (CND) are detected. Warm Gas at very high (|Vlsr| > 100 km/s) LSR velocities is also detected towards the line of sight to the Sgr A Complex, and it is most probably located outside the region, in the X1 orbits.

The composition of planetary solids and gases is largely rooted in the processing of volatile elements in protoplanetary disks. To shed light on the key processes, we carry out a comparative analysis of the gas-phase carbon abundance in two systems with a similar age and disk mass, but different central stars: HD 100546 and TW Hya. We combine our recent detections of C$^{0}$ in these disks with observations of other carbon reservoirs (CO, C$^{+}$, C$_{2}$H) and gas mass and warm gas tracers (HD, O$^{0}$), as well as spatially resolved ALMA observations and the spectral energy distribution. The disks are modelled with the DALI 2D physical-chemical code. Stellar abundances for HD 100546 are derived from archival spectra. Upper limits on HD emission from HD 100546 place an upper limit on the total disk mass of $\leq0.1\,M_{\odot}$. The gas-phase carbon abundance in the atmosphere of this warm Herbig disk is at most moderately depleted compared to the interstellar medium, with [C]/[H]$_{\rm gas}=(0.1-1.5)\times 10^{-4}$. HD 100546 itself is a $\lambda\,$Bo\"{o}tis star, with solar abundances of C and O but a strong depletion of rock-forming elements. In the gas of the T Tauri disk TW Hya, both C and O are strongly underabundant, with [C]/[H]$_{\rm gas}=(0.2-5.0)\times 10^{-6}$ and C/O${>}1$. We discuss evidence that the gas-phase C and O abundances are high in the warm inner regions of both disks. Our analytical model, including vertical mixing and a grain size distribution, reproduces the observed [C]/[H]$_{\rm gas}$ in the outer disk of TW Hya and allows to make predictions for other systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A
