Perfluoropentacene (PFP), an $n$-type organic semiconductor, is deposited at monolayer and bilayer coverage on Cu(111). Scanning tunneling microscopy at various bias voltages is used to investigate the geometric and electronic structure of the layer. The appearances of the first layer and second layer differ, probably because of perturbation to the first layer electronic structure by the substrate. This has been previously observed for pentacene (Pn), the isostructural $p$-type organic semiconductor. The PFP film has a unit cell of (4 -3,3 4) relative to the substrate, which is larger than that of Pn/Cu(111), representing a half-integer increment in each direction.

We report on nano-optical imaging study of WSe2 thin flakes with the scanning near-field optical microscopy (NSOM). The NSOM technique allows us to visualize in real space various waveguide photon modes inside WSe2. By tuning the excitation laser energy, we are able to map the entire dispersion of these waveguide modes both above and below the A exciton energy of WSe2. We found that all the modes interact strongly with WSe2 excitons. The outcome of the interaction is that the observed waveguide modes shift to higher momenta right below the A exciton energy. At higher energies, on the other hand, these modes are strongly damped due to adjacent B excitons or band edge absorptions. We report on the observation of nanoscale conduction at ferroelectric domain walls in hexagonal HoMnO3 protected by the topology of multiferroic vortices using in situ conductive atomic force microscopy, piezoresponse force microscopy, and kelvin-probe force microscopy at low temperatures. In addition to previously observed Schottky-like rectification at low bias [Phys. Rev. Lett., 104, 217601 (2010)], conductance spectra reveal that negatively charged tail-to-tail walls exhibit enhanced conduction at high forward bias, while positively charged head-to-head walls exhibit suppressed conduction at high reverse bias. We present x-ray reflectivity, x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy measurements of single crystal SrTiO3 taken as a function of temperature. We found a rumpling transformation of the SrTiO3 surface after cooling the sample below ~105 K. The rumpling transformation is correlated with the cubic to tetragonal phase transformation that occurs at the same temperature. The rumpling transformation is reversible.

We have demonstrated Zeeman slowing and capture of neutral Ra-225 and Ra-226 atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). The intercombination transition 1S0-3P1 is the only quasi-cycling transition in radium and was used for laser-cooling and trapping. Repumping along the 3D1-1P1 transition extended the lifetime of the trap from milliseconds to seconds. Room-temperature blackbody radiation was demonstrated to provide repumping from the metastable 3P0 level. We measured the isotope shift and hyperfine splittings on the 3D1-1P1 transition with the laser-cooled atoms, and set a limit on the lifetime of the 3D1 level based on the measured blackbody repumping rate. We study nonlinear optical effects in the laser excitation of Rydberg states. $5S_{1/2}$ and $5P_{3/2}$ levels of $^{85}$Rb are strongly coupled by a strong laser field and probed by a weak laser tuned to the $5P_{3/2} - 44D$ Rydberg resonance. We observe high contrast Autler-Townes spectra which are dependent on the pump polarization, intensity and detuning.
