Abstract

Thai census data from 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000 are examined to study the way men and women at different education levels have fared over the years in their marriage propensities, noting differences in urban and rural and regional patterns. Qualitative data suggest that while marriage might no longer be necessary, there remain abundant social pressures, particularly for women to formalize unions.

Abstract

Most western societies have experienced an increase in the incidence of divorce during the twentieth century. In some developing societies, however, divorce rates are at levels as high as those observed in the West, and in several of these societies divorce rates have been declining. One example of a country with high but declining levels of divorce is Indonesia. In this study we utilize World Fertility Survey data for the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali to establish the incidence of marital dissolution, to examine how the incidence has changed over time, and to analyze the covariates of the timing and probability of divorce. The findings suggest that declines in divorce can be largely attributed to development processes that have increased levels of educational attainment and resulted in later ages of marriage.

Abstract

Chapter 21 of the book "Sex Without Consent: Young People in Developing Countries" is presented. The differences in responses of young people to questions related to sexual behavior are explored using different data collection methods in Thailand. Based on the results, inconsistency was observed in the reporting of sexual experiences through the self-administered questionnaires (SAQs). It suggests that the audio-computer-assisted structured interview (ACASI) method appear to reduce random measurement error.
