1. Promoting Peer Connection in Online Courses: Exploring the Effect of Media Richness on Presence and Social Connection

Abstract

Online learning provides a variety of benefits to the educational experience, including accessibility and flexibility, but is often limited in terms of peer-to-peer interactions and relationship development. Using media richness theory as a guiding framework, this study extended prior research to determine the impact of using richer channels in a fast-friendship task on feelings of co-presence and social connection among undergraduate students in online courses. Participants (N = 106) were assigned to one of three conditions (text, phone or video) for the fast-friendship task, which took place over the course of nine weeks. The results revealed that there was no indirect effect of channel richness on social connection through co-presence. Additionally, the direct effects of channel richness on co-presence and co-presence on social connection were not significant. These null findings have theoretical and practical implications for understanding media richness in online learning and improving course design among contemporary college students.

Abstract

In a sample of 28 individuals cohabiting with a partner in NYC, Boston, or Chicago, this study tested whether implementation of stay-home orders to combat the spread of COVID-19 disrupted physical activity and whether high-quality romantic relationships buffered adverse effects. Participants provided FitBit data between February and October, 2020. Stay-home orders were associated with a reduction in daily step counts, B = −1595.72, p = 0.018, increased sedentary minutes, B = 33.75, p = 0.002, and reduced daily minutes of light and moderate physical activity, B = –25.01, p = 0.011; B = –0.72, p = 0.021. 16. Exploring female perceptions of relational norms in text messaging and their implications for developing romantic relationships

Abstract

The pressures and expectations that young adults in romantic relationships face become increasingly complex with the incorporation of various information communication technologies (ICTs). The purpose of this project is to investigate normative relational behaviors and expectations via smartphone use for developing romantic partners and to better understand how these couples manage normative behaviors. This study utilizes a qualitative approach, specifically semi-structured interviews for data collection. There were a total of 20 participants in the age range of 18 to 24 (M = 19.35, SD = 1.31). Through an inductive iterative approach to analysis, there were three main findings. First, mobile technologies, specifically text messaging, afford everyday talk for romantic couples, which introduces an autonomy-connection dialectical tension that couples must manage. Second, smartphone features, like read receipts and Snapchat streaks, afford continuous communication for couples, consequently adjusting expectations for synchronous and asynchronous forms of communication. Third, there are implicit normative behavior expectations (i.e., response times) and patterns of expectancy violations that frequently occur across couples. Taken together, these findings highlight specific affordances and features of mobile technologies that are pertinent within the developmental phase of romantic relationships, which consequently affect relationship communicative dynamics.
