This research explores the interplay between social, legal, and technical factors toward the intention to adopt smart contracts that encode and store electronic health records (EHRs) in the U.S.A and China. The study integrates the privacy calculus model by considering the influence of smart contracts’ characteristics and the regulatory environment on the trade-off between perceived risks and benefits. The model also includes specific Hofstede’s cultural dimensions to capture the differences between U.S. and Chinese patients in developing the above trade-off. Data are collected through a survey among patients in two major hospitals in China and the U.S.A. The results of our research lead to significant contributions for academics and practitioners. This research investigates technical characteristics and technological, social, and affective factors that influence the evaluation of perceived privacy risks and benefits toward adopting AI-based smart healthcare services in the USA. The study develops a research model that integrates Privacy Calculus Theory (PCT) with new constructs, i.e., AI technical characteristics (personalization and anthropomorphism), technological factors (perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness), social factors (social influence and privacy regulation) and two opposite emotional states (enjoyment and exhaustion). A survey will be developed and distributed using crowdsourcing through Prolific. The findings of our research will shed light on the different role of technical characteristics and technological, social, and affective factors on the calculus between perceived risks and benefits in relation to the adoption of AI-based smart healthcare services. The purpose of this study is to ascertain if and how organizations are affected by the legal context in which they carry out their business. We develop a model which takes into consideration the macro environment, the competitive environment, and the focal firm. In the macro environment, we analyze country characteristics and, in particular, we examine differences between civil law and common law systems. In the competitive environment, we focus on the differences between centralized vs decentralized regulatory systems by analyzing and comparing legal cases as to how Europe and the U.S. enforce privacy regulations differently. Finally, we focus on the focal firm with respect to the differences in business behaviors taken by organizations in the European Union and the United States with reference to IT innovation and the development of new information and communication technologies. Every transaction that is made either online or offline, and every social interaction that is transferred or stored electronically in some way are generally consumed as big data and ultimately drives the analytics from which consumers benefit. However, this raises some concerns around privacy and ethics. For example, should companies that consumers interact with be allowed to sell their personal information? There are certain benefits that consumers derive such as personalized contents when they choose to offer their personal data to myriad of websites. However, consumers offering personal data to websites subject themselves to possible invasions of their privacy when their data is sold off to third-party website. Since the consumer willfully gave away their personal information, is it truly personal and should they retain some, if any, control over it? Theories such as privacy calculus and protection motivation theory (PMT) are a couple of prominent examples that focus on the privacy risks and benefits that drive consumer behavior. However, there is still a lack of research on privacy awareness (defined as privacy alert from here on), the stage at which individuals become cognitively aware in order to assess any risks versus benefits. During the 1970's and 80's, the overall productivity within the United States began to slow down despite the rapid development of IT. With this slowdown, organizations all over the world began to question the value that IT brought to organizations. Their rationale was quite simple in the sense that if they invested, for example, a million dollars into infrastructure, computers, software, and personnel, then they expected some form of return on their investment. Otherwise, what would be the point in spending money on something that would bring them closer to bankruptcy instead of higher profits? The early attempts at providing insight into valuing IT proved to be quite difficult for such a simple question. Within a few years and some supporting data, researchers were able to shed some insight into the causes. Their analysis and results supported the understanding that IT did bring value to organizations but further research would be necessary in order to uncover the whole truth. Within the past two decades, the tone around IT's value has been changing from skepticism and disbelief into a fervent following in the necessity of IT in order for businesses to survive. With the success of organizations such as Google, Alibaba, and Amazon, industry experts and organizations all over the world are realizing that IT is no longer an unknown luxury. Some may argue that it has become equivalent to simply doing business or not doing it at all. Our research question aims to shed insight on the dramatic shift from the IT Productivity Paradox to IT Necessity.
