We study the formation of ferromagnetic and magnetic polaron states in weakly doped heterobilayer transition metal dichalcogenides in the ``heavy fermion'' limit in which one layer hosts a dense set of local moments and the other hosts a low density of itinerant holes. We show that interactions among the carriers in the itinerant layer induces a ferromagnetic exchange. We characterize the ground state finding a competition, controlled by the carrier concentration and interlayer exchange, between a layer decoupled phase of itinerant carriers in a background of local moments, a fully polarized ferromagnet and a canted antiferromagnet. In the canted antiferromagnet phase the combination of the in-plane 120$^{\circ}$ N\'eel order and Ising spin orbit couplings induces winding in the electronic wavefunction giving rise to a topologically non-trivial spin texture and an observable anomalous Hall effect. At larger carrier density the ferromagnetically ordered phase transitions into a paramagnetic heavy Fermi liquid state. This theory enables a comprehensive understanding of the existing experimental observations while also making predictions including experimental signatures enabling direct imaging of spin polaron bound states with scanning tunneling microscopy. Our work shows that the prevailing paradigm of the (Doniach) phase diagram of heavy fermion metals is fundamentally modified in the low doping regime of heterobilayer transition metal dichalcogenides., Comment: 8+8 pages, 4+3 figures

The recent observation of superconductivity in twisted bilayer WSe$_2$ raises intriguing questions concerning the origin and the properties of superconducting states realized in bands with non-trivial topological properties and repulsive electron-electron interactions. Using a continuum band structure model, we analyze a mechanism for Coulomb interaction-driven superconductivity in twisted bilayers of WSe$_2$. We discuss the symmetries and the phenomenological properties of the resulting superconducting phases and their evolution with interlayer potential difference, tunable via an out of plane electric field. The pairing strength is a non-monotonic function of interlayer potential, being larger at intermediate values due to mixing of singlet and triplet pairing. In contrast, at larger interlayer potential, the pairing tendency is suppressed due to enhanced Coulomb repulsion. The superconducting state is chiral in a large regime of parameters and undergoes a transition to a nodal nematic superconductor at a critical potential difference. The chiral state, characterized by an intervalley-symmetric superposition of triplet and singlet pairs, is classified as a topological superconductor within the Altland-Zirnbauer class C. At zero interlayer potential difference, the superconducting state is instead of class D, which hosts Majorana zero modes, making it a promising candidate for applications in quantum computation., Comment: 9+11 pages, 4+9 figures

Ideal $C=1$ Chern bands exhibit a Landau level correspondence: they factorize as a lowest Landau levels and a spinor wavefunction that spans the layer index. We demonstrate that, in single Dirac moir\'e models, the spinor develops generally a Skyrme texture in real space with an associated Berry phase which compensates exactly the magnetic phase of the Landau level. For ideal bands with higher Chern numbers $C>1$, we find that $C$ color Landau levels are carried by $C$ spinors with Skyrme textures. We identify a SU(C) gauge symmetry in the color space of spinors and an emergent non-Abelian connection in real space intimately linked to the Pontryagin winding index of the layer skyrmions. They result in a total real-space Chern number of $-1$, screening the magnetic phase, irrespective of $C$ and of the number of layers. The topologically robust Skyrme texture remains remarkably intact in twisted bilayer graphene, even far from the chiral limit, and for realistic values of corrugation, making it an experimentally testable feature. Recent experiments reported the realization of a heavy Fermi liquid in AB-stacked MoTe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterobilayers. In this paper we show that the AB-stacked heterobilayer configuration is particularly suited to realize topological Kondo semimetal and topological Kondo insulator ground states at a doping of two holes per moir\'e unit cell. The small lattice mismatch between the MoTe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ monolayers and the different bandwidths of their highest lying moir\'e valence bands means that, in the experimentally relevant range of hole dopings, the MoTe$_2$ layer is effectively a Mott insulator with only low-lying magnetic excitations Kondo-coupled to more itinerant electrons in the WSe$_2$. The crucial consequence of the AB-stacking configuration is that the interlayer tunnelling connects orbitals of opposite parity in the two layers, leading to a chiral Kondo coupling. We show that the chiral Kondo coupling favors a topological Kondo semimetal at filling $\nu=1+1$, with a non-quantized spin Hall conductance arising from edge modes, whose spectrum and overlap with bulk states we determine. We further show that a spatially random strain field that locally breaks the rotation symmetry can convert the Kondo semimetal to a narrow gap topological Kondo insulator featuring a quantized spin Hall conductance., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

We show that in models with the Hatsugai-Kohmoto type of interaction that is local in momentum space thus infinite-range in real space, Kubo formulas neither reproduce the correct thermodynamic susceptibilities, nor yield sensible transport coefficients. Using Kohn's trick to differentiate between metals and insulators by threading a flux in a torus geometry, we uncover the striking property that Hatsugai-Kohmoto models with an interaction-induced gap in the spectrum sustain a current that grows as the linear size at any non-zero flux and which can be either diamagnetic or paramagnetic., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure

Helical trilayer graphene (hTG) exhibits a supermoir\'e pattern with large domains centered around stacking points ABA and BAB, where two well-separated low-energy bands appear with different total Chern numbers at each valley, forming a Chern mosaic pattern. In the chiral limit, the low-energy bands become exactly flat at zero energy for magic-angle twists. Here we investigate these zero-energy flat bands and their topological properties in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We show that hTG retains the precise flatness of the zero-energy bands, even at finite magnetic fields. We find topological phase transitions at fields corresponding to unit and half magnetic flux leading to an emergence of higher Chern number flat bands. Consequently the Chern mosaic gets modified for finite magnetic fields. We further find the analytical forms of zero-energy wave functions and identify a set of hidden wave functions, which gives crucial insights into both the topological transitions and enhancement of Chern numbers across them. The prediction and realization of the quantum anomalous Hall effect are often intimately connected to honeycomb lattices in which the sublattice degree of freedom plays a central role in the nontrivial topology. Two-dimensional Wigner crystals, on the other hand, form triangular lattices without sublattice degrees of freedom, resulting in a topologically trivial state. In this Letter, we discuss the possibility of spontaneously formed honeycomb-lattice crystals that exhibit the quantum anomalous Hall effect. Starting from a single-band system with nontrivial quantum geometry, we derive the mean-field energy functional of a class of crystal states and express it as a model of sublattice pseudospins in momentum space. We find that nontrivial quantum geometry leads to extra terms in the pseudospin model that break an effective `time-reversal symmetry' and favor a topologically nontrivial pseudospin texture. When the effects of these extra terms dominate over the ferromagnetic exchange coupling between pseudospins, the anomalous Hall crystal state becomes energetically favorable over the trivial Wigner crystal state.

The circularly polarized photogalvanic effect (CPGE) is studied in chiral Weyl semimetals with short-ranged quenched disorder. Without disorder, the topological properties of chiral Weyl semimetals lead to the quantization of the CPGE, which is a second-order optical response. Using a combination of diagrammatic perturbation theory in the continuum and exact numerical calculations via the kernel polynomial method on a lattice model we show that disorder perturbatively destabilizes the quantization of the CPGE., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

We introduce a real-space slave rotor theory of the physics of topological Mott insulators, using the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model as an example, and use it to show that a topological gap in the Green function zeros corresponds to a gap in the bulk spinon spectrum and that a zero edge mode corresponds to a spinon edge mode. We then consider an interface between a topological Mott insulator and a conventional topological insulator showing how the spinon edge mode of the topological Mott insulator combines with the spin part of the conventional electron topological edge state leaving a non-Fermi liquid edge mode described by a gapless propagating holon and gapped spinon state. Our work demonstrates the physical meaning of Green function zeros and shows that interfaces between conventional and Mott topological insulators are a rich source of new physics., Comment: 7+5 pages, 4+3 figures

Using scanning-tunneling-microscopy and theoretical modeling on heterostructures of twisted bilayer graphene and hexagonal Boron-Nitride, we show that the emergent super-moire structures display a rich landscape of moire-crystals and quasicrystals. We reveal a phase-diagram comprised of commensurate moire-crystals embedded in swaths of moire quasicrystals. The 1:1 commensurate crystal, expected to be a Chern insulator, should only exist at one point on the phase-diagram, implying that it ought to be practically undetectable. Surprisingly we find that the commensurate crystals exist over a much wider than predicted range, providing evidence of an unexpected self-alignment mechanism that is explained using an elastic-network model. The remainder of the phase-diagram, where we observe tunable quasicrystals, affords a new platform for exploring the unique electronic-properties of these rarely found in nature structures., Comment: 37 pages, 18 figures

Helical twisted trilayer graphene exhibits zero-energy flat bands with large degeneracy in the chiral limit. The flat bands emerge at a discrete set of magic twist angles and feature properties intrinsically distinct from those realized in twisted bilayer graphene. Their degeneracy and the associated band Chern numbers depend on the parity of the magic angles. Two degenerate flat bands with Chern numbers $C_A=2$ and $C_B=-1$ arise at odd magic angles, whereas even magic angles display four flat bands, with Chern number $C_{A/B}=\pm1$, together with a Dirac cone crossing at zero energy. All bands are sublattice polarized. We demonstrate the structure behind these flat bands and obtain analytical expressions for the wavefunctions in all cases. Each magic angle is identified with the vanishing of a zero-mode wavefunction at high-symmetry position and momentum. The whole analytical structure results from whether the vanishing is linear or quadratic for the, respectively, odd and even magic angle. The $C_{3z}$ and $C_{2y}T$ symmetries are shown to play a key role in establishing the flat bands. In contrast, the particle-hole symmetry is not essential, except from gapping out the crossing Dirac cone at even magic angles., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

Recent experiments have confirmed the presence of interlayer excitons in the ground state of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers. The interlayer excitons are expected to show remarkable transport properties when they undergo Bose condensation. In this work, we demonstrate that quantum geometry of Bloch wavefunctions plays an important role in the phase stiffness of the Interlayer Exciton Condensate (IEC). Notably, we identify a geometric contribution that amplifies the stiffness, leading to the formation of a robust condensate with an increased BKT temperature. Our results have direct implications for the ongoing experimental efforts on interlayer excitons in materials that have non-trivial quantum geometry. We provide quantitative estimates for the geometric contribution in TMD bilayers through a realistic continuum model with gated Coulomb interaction, and find that the substantially increased stiffness allows for an IEC to be realized at amenable experimental conditions., Comment: improved presentation

We demonstrate that a single layer of graphene subject to a superlattice potential nearly commensurate to a $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ supercell exactly maps to the chiral model of twisted bilayer graphene, albeit with half as many degrees of freedom. We comprehensively review the properties of this ``half-chiral model,'' including the interacting phases stabilized at integer fillings and the effects of substrate-induced symmetry breaking. We list candidate substrates that could produce a superlattice potential on graphene with the correct periodicity to access the flat band limit. Experimental measurements on a half-chiral moire heterostructure, in which valley-skyrmions cannot form, could yield insights on the physics they mediate in twisted bilayer graphene.

We study trilayer graphene arranged in a staircase stacking configuration with equal consecutive twist angle. On top of the moir\'e cristalline pattern, a supermoir\'e long-wavelength modulation emerges that we treat adiabatically. For each valley, we find that the two central bands are topological with Chern numbers $C=\pm 1$ forming a Chern mosaic at the supermoir\'e scale. The Chern domains are centered around the high-symmetry stacking points ABA or BAB and they are separated by gapless lines connecting the AAA points, where the spectrum is fully connected. In the chiral limit and at a magic angle of $\theta \sim 1.69^\circ$, we prove that the central bands are exactly flat with ideal quantum curvature at ABA and BAB. Furthermore, we decompose them analytically as a superposition of an intrinsic color-entangled state with $\pm 2$ and a Landau level state with Chern number $\mp 1$. To connect with experimental configurations, we also explore the non-chiral limit with finite corrugation and find that the topological Chern mosaic pattern is indeed robust and the central bands are still well separated from remote bands., Comment: 7+7 pages, 5 figures

We show that topological superconductivity may emerge upon doping of transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers above an integer-filling magnetic state of the topmost valence moir\'e band. The effective attraction between charge carriers is generated by an electric p-wave Feshbach resonance arising from interlayer excitonic physics and has a tuanble strength, which may be large. Together with the low moir\'e carrier densities reachable by gating, this robust attraction enables access to the long-sought p-wave BEC-BCS transition. The topological protection arises from an emergent time reversal symmetry occurring when the magnetic order and long wavelength magnetic fluctuations do not couple different valleys. The resulting topological superconductor features helical Majorana edge modes, leading to half-integer quantized spin-thermal Hall conductivity and to charge currents induced by circularly polarized light or other time-reversal symmetry-breaking fields., Comment: 5+2 pages, 4 figures

We introduce the time-dependent ghost Gutzwiller approximation (td-gGA), a non-equilibrium extension of the ghost Gutzwiller approximation (gGA), a powerful variational approach which systematically improves on the standard Gutzwiller method by including auxiliary degrees of freedom. We demonstrate the effectiveness of td-gGA by studying the quench dynamics of the single-band Hubbard model as a function of the number of auxiliary parameters. Our results show that td-gGA captures the relaxation of local observables, in contrast with the time-dependent Gutzwiller method. This systematic and qualitative improvement leads to an accuracy comparable with time-dependent Dynamical Mean-Field Theory which comes at a much lower computational cost. These findings suggest that td-gGA has the potential to enable extensive and accurate theoretical investigations of multi-orbital correlated electron systems in nonequilibrium situations, with potential applications in the field of quantum control, Mott solar cells, and other areas where an accurate account of the non-equilibrium properties of strongly interacting quantum systems is required., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

Stacking three monolayers of graphene with a twist generally produces two moir\'e patterns. A moir\'e of moir\'e structure then emerges at larger distance where the three layers periodically realign. We devise here an effective low-energy theory to describe the spectrum at distances larger than the moir\'e lengthscale. In each valley of the underlying graphene, the theory comprises one Dirac cone at the ${\bf \Gamma}_M$ point of the moir\'e Brillouin zone and two weakly gapped points at ${\bf K}_M$ and ${\bf K}'_M$. The velocities and small gaps exhibit a spatial dependence in the moir\'e-of-moir\'e unit cell, entailing a non-abelian connection potential which ensures gauge invariance. The resulting model is numerically solved and a fully connected spectrum is obtained, which is protected by the combination of time-reversal and twofold-rotation symmetries., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures

We theoretically study the interplay between magnetism and a heavy Fermi liquid in the AB stacked transition metal dichalcogenide bilayer system MoTe$_2$/WSe$_2$ in the regime in which the Mo layer supports localized magnetic moments coupled by interlayer electron tunnelling to a weakly correlated band of itinerant electrons in the W layer. We show that the interlayer electron transfer leads to a chiral Kondo exchange, with consequences including a strong dependence of the Kondo temperature on carrier concentration, a topological hybridization gap and an anomalous Hall effect. The theoretical model exhibits two phases, a small Fermi surface magnet and a large Fermi surface heavy Fermi liquid; the transition between them is first order. A low-energy theory is developed for the the transport properties of the two states. We present a promising route to realize spontaneous magnetic order on the surface of a 3D topological insulator by applying a superlattice potential. The superlattice potential creates tunable van Hove singularities, which, when combined with strong spin-orbit coupling and Coulomb repulsion give rise to a topological meron lattice spin texture. The periodicity of this designer meron lattice can be tuned by varying the periodicity of the superlattice potential. We characterize the magnetic order using Ginzburg-Landau theory and show that the magnetic transition temperature reaches experimentally accessible values. In this paper, we present a tutorial overview of state-of-the-art radio frequency (RF) clutter modeling and simulation (M&S) techniques. Traditional statistical approximation based methods will be reviewed followed by more accurate physics-based stochastic transfer function clutter models that facilitate site-specific simulations anywhere on earth. The various factors that go into the computation of these transfer functions will be presented, followed by several examples across multiple RF applications. We study the presence of higher-order van Hove singularities in mirror-symmetric twisted trilayer graphene. This geometry has recently emerged experimentally as a fascinating playground for studying correlated and exotic superconducting phases. We find that the trilayer hosts a zero-energy higher-order van Hove singularity with an exponent -1/3. The singularity is protected by the threefold rotation symmetry and a combined mirror-particle-hole symmetry and it can be tuned with only the twist angle and a perpendicular electric field. It arises from the combined merging of van Hove singularities and Dirac cones at zero energy, beyond the recent classifications of van Hove singularities. Moreover, we find that varying a third parameter such as corrugation brings the system to a topological Lifshitz transition, with anomalous exponent -2/5, separating regions of locally open and closed semiclassical orbits., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures

We analyze the orbital magnetic susceptibility from the band structure of twisted bilayer graphene. Close to charge neutrality, the out-of-plane susceptibility inherits the strong diamagnetic response from graphene. Increasing the doping, a crossover from diamagnetism to paramagnetism is obtained and a logarithmic divergence develops at the van Hove singularity of the Moir\'e lattice in the first band. The enhanced paramagnetism at the van Hove singularity is stronger for relatively large angle but gets suppressed by the flat spectrum towards the vicinity of the first magic angle. A diverging paramagnetic susceptibility indicates an instability towards orbital ferromagnetism with an orbital out-of-plane magnetization and a Landau level structure. The region of instability is however found to be practically very small, parametrically suppressed by the ratio of the electron velocity to the speed of light. We also discuss the in-plane orbital susceptibility at charge neutrality where we find a paramagnetic response and a logarithmic divergence at the magic angle. The paramagnetic response is associated with negative counterflow current in the two layers and does not admit a semiclassical description., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures

We derive a general criterion for determining the onset of superradiant phase transition in electronic bands coupled to a cavity field, with possibly electron-electron interactions. For longitudinal superradiance in 2D or genuine 1D systems, we prove that it is always prevented, thereby extending existing no-go theorems. Instead, a superradiant phase transition can occur to a nonuniform transverse cavity field and we give specific examples in non-interacting models, either through Fermi surface nesting or parabolic band touching. Investigating the resulting time-reversal symmetry breaking superradiant states, we find in the former case Fermi surface lifting down to four Dirac points on a square lattice model, with topologically protected zero-modes, and in the latter case topological bands with non-zero Chern number on an hexagonal lattice., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures and supplementary material

Motivated by recent experiments we consider transport across an interacting magnetic impurity coupled to the Majorana zero mode (MZM) observed at the boundary of a topological superconductor (SC). In the presence of a finite tunneling amplitude we observe hybridization of the MZM with the quantum dot, which is manifested by a half-integer zero-bias conductance $G_0=e^2/2h$ measured on the metallic contacts. The low-energy feature in the conductance drops abruptly by crossing the transition line from the topological to the non-topological superconducting regime. Differently from the in-gap Yu-Shiba-Rosinov-like bound states, which are strongly affected by the on-site impurity Coulomb repulsion, we show that the MZM signature in the conductance is robust and persists even at large values of the interaction. Interestingly, the topological regime is characterized by a vanishing Fano factor, $F=0$, induced by the MZM. Combined measurements of the conductance and the shot noise in the experimental set-up presented in the manuscript allow to detect the topological properties of the superconducting wire and to distinguish the low-energy contribution of a MZM from other possible sources of zero-bias anomaly. We study transport across a magnetic impurity by means of a recently developed slave-spin technique that does not require any constraint. Within a conserving mean-field approximation we find a conductance that displays both the known zero-bias anomaly but also the expected peak at bias of order U. We extend the slave-spin mean-field approximation to study the out of equilibrium transient evolution of a quantum dot. We apply the method to investigate the time-evolution of a quantum dot induced by a time-dependent electrochemical potential applied to the contacts. Similarly to the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation, the mean-field slave-spin dynamics is able to capture dissipation in the leads, so that a steady-state is reached after a characteristic relaxation time., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures
