The first experimental results from a new type of transmissive synchrotron X-ray diagnostic instrument are presented. A chemical-vapour-deposition diamond plate with graphitic electrodes and a modulation lock-in signal acquisition technique are used to image the X-ray beam., The first experimental results from a new transmissive diagnostic instrument for synchrotron X-ray beamlines are presented. The instrument utilizes a single-crystal chemical-vapour-deposition diamond plate as the detector material, with graphitic wires embedded within the bulk diamond acting as electrodes. The resulting instrument is an all-carbon transmissive X-ray imaging detector. Within the instrument’s transmissive aperture there is no surface metallization that could absorb X-rays, and no surface structures that could be damaged by exposure to synchrotron X-ray beams. The graphitic electrodes are fabricated in situ within the bulk diamond using a laser-writing technique. Two separate arrays of parallel graphitic wires are fabricated, running parallel to the diamond surface and perpendicular to each other, at two different depths within the diamond. One array of wires has a modulated bias voltage applied; the perpendicular array is a series of readout electrodes. X-rays passing through the detector generate charge carriers within the bulk diamond through photoionization, and these charge carriers travel to the nearest readout electrode under the influence of the modulated electrical bias. Each of the crossing points between perpendicular wires acts as an individual pixel. The simultaneous read-out of all pixels is achieved using a lock-in technique. The parallel wires within each array are separated by 50 µm, determining the pixel pitch. Readout is obtained at 100 Hz, and the resolution of the X-ray beam position measurement is 600 nm for a 180 µm size beam.

We introduce a novel structured controller design for the electron beam stabilization problem of the UK’s national synchrotron light source. Because changes to the synchrotron will not allow the application of existing control approaches, we develop a novel method to diagonalize the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system. A generalized singular value decomposition (GSVD) is used to simultaneously diagonalize the actuator response matrices, which is applicable to an arbitrary number of actuator dynamics in a cross-directional setting. The resulting decoupled systems are regulated using mid-ranged control and the controller gains derived as a function of the generalized singular values. In addition, we exploit the inherent block-circulant symmetry of the system. The performance of our controller is demonstrated using simulations that involve machine data.

Electron spin polarization occurs naturally in an electron storage ring due to spin-flip synchrotron radiation. The equilibrium polarization level that is achieved in Diamond Light Source was studied theoretically and experimentally. A novel approach that enables measurements during user operation is presented, compatible with beams of small vertical emittance in the range of pm rad. An array of four custom-made scintillation detectors has been installed around the beam pipe downstream from the collimators to capture a significant fraction of the lost particles and witness the depolarization process in the presence of a background loss rate. A new concept for detecting the depolarization resonance even when it coincides with higher-order betatron resonances was introduced. The momentum compaction factor was measured to be in very good agreement with the storage ring numerical model. In the end, we measured a good long-term stability of the beam energy during user operation time.

This paper considers the problem of designing an optimal controller for the linear static system associated with electron beam stabilisation systems in synchrotrons. The relationship between the actuators and sensors used for electron beam control in synchrotrons is modelled as a static response matrix which is typically ill-conditioned. Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) is commonly used to invert the response matrix and modes associated with small singular values are either discarded or filtered. In this paper, a robust control approach is used to determine the optimal static controller to the perturbed system. It is demonstrated how this approach compares to the use of Tikhonov regularisation for an inverse-based controller. A detailed example from the Diamond Light Source synchrotron is presented, applying both the inverse-based method and the robust control approach to stabilise electron beam motion.

A single crystal CVD diamond detector with graphitic wire electrodes running beneath the diamond surface has been fabricated. This detector design is novel in that there is no surface metallisation present within the active region, and so the detector is a uniquely transmissive X-ray beam diagnostic instrument. This detector is designed to simultaneously measure the position, profile, and flux of an incident beam. It has applications in beam position and profile monitoring, and active beam feedback and stabilisation. To achieve this, a short-pulse laser, focused to micron-sizes using adaptive optics, can be used to graphitise arbitrary wire paths within bulk diamond. Presented in this paper is a transmissive X-ray pixel detector design with a 50-micrometre pixel pitch created using this technique. This pixel detector is produced by fabricating two separate arrays of parallel wires running under the surface of a diamond plate. The two arrays run perpendicular to each other, and parallel to the diamond surface. They are separated within the material by a depth of 100 microns. The parallel wires within each array are separated by 50-microns, and this is what determines the pixel pitch. Each of the crossing points between two wires from each array acts as a pixel. The signal from each pixel may be read out by measuring the signal current from each wire in one array whilst applying a bias voltage alternately to each wire in the other, perpendicular array. Alternatively, it is proposed to modulate the bias applied to each wire at a different frequency, from which the 2-dimensional beam profile may also be measured using a lock-in technique. This paper will provide an overview of the fabrication techniques for this first prototype detector, and provide a discussion of signal readout methods that will be used. Diamond has recently successfully commissioned a major change in the lattice consisting of the substitution of a standard double-bend achromat (DBA) cell with a modified four-bend achromat (4BA) cell called “double-double bend achromat” (DDBA). This work stems from the original studies initiated in 2012 towards a Diamond upgrade and provides the benefit of an additional straight section in the ring available for insertion devices. This paper reviews the DDBA design and layout, the implications for technical subsystems, the associated engineering challenges and the main results of the commissioning completed in April 2017. &nbsp

We report on the use of single-crystal chemical vapour deposition (scCVD) diamond X-ray beam diagnostics at Diamond Light Source Ltd (DLS) for beamline commissioning and day-to-day beamline operation. It is demonstrated that such detectors can offer synchrotron beamlines a measurement of the X-ray beam position with resolutions of a few 10nm at kHz bandwidths. It is straightforward to extract extremely valuable spectral information of both beam motion and intensity, aiding beamlines in determining the source of vibrations or other beam instabilities. In this paper we discuss the motivation behind the use of single-crystal diamond detectors for monitoring monochromatic X-ray beams, and advantages over other diagnostic techniques are discussed. In order to absolutely quantify the performance of the diamond detectors in use at DLS an experiment has been conducted with three diamond X-ray beam position monitors installed on a beamline, longitudinally separated along the beam path by ∼10 millimeters and intercepting the same incident X-ray beam. Measurements from each of the three diamond detectors were synchronously acquired at kHz bandwidths. Other, independent measurements were employed to corroborate the measurements obtained from the three X-ray beam position monitors. The uncorrelated position measurement noise recorded by the synchronous measurements and is shown to be less than 1% of beam size at this bandwidth. Longer integration times resulted in correspondingly less measurement noise.

One of the important issues of the in-vacuum undulator design is the coupling impedance of the vacuum chamber, which includes tapered transitions with variable gap size. To get complete and reliable information on the impedance, analytical estimate, numerical simulations and beam-based measurements have been performed at Diamond Light Source, a forthcoming upgrade of which includes introducing additional insertion device (ID) straights. The impedance of an already existing ID vessel geometrically similar to the new one has been measured using the orbit bump method. The measurement results in comparison with analytical estimations and numerical simulations are discussed in this paper. © 2014 Published by the American Physical Society.

The beam heat load is an important input parameter needed for the cryogenic design of superconducting insertion devices. Theoretical models taking into account the different heating mechanisms of an electron beam to a cold bore predict smaller values than the ones measured with several superconducting insertion devices installed in different electron storage rings. In order to measure and possibly understand the beam heat load to a cold bore, a cold vacuum chamber for diagnostics (COLDDIAG) has been built. COLDDIAG is equipped with temperature sensors, pressure gauges, mass spectrometers as well as retarding field analyzers which allow to measure the beam heat load, total pressure, and gas content as well as the flux of particles hitting the chamber walls. COLDDIAG was installed in a straight section of the Diamond Light Source (DLS). In a previous paper the experimental equipment as well as the installation of COLDDIAG in the DLS are described [S. Gerstl et al., Phys. Rev. ST Accel. Beams 17, 103201 (2014)]. In this paper we present an overview of all the measurements performed with COLDDIAG at the DLS and their detailed analysis, as well as impedance bench measurements of the cold beam vacuum chamber performed at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology after removal from the DLS. Relevant conclusions for the cryogenic design of superconducting insertion devices are drawn from the obtained results.

Maintaining the stability of the X-ray beam relative to the sample point is of paramount importance for beamlines and users wanting to perform cutting-edge experiments. The ability to detect, and subsequently compensate for, variations in X-ray beam position with effective diagnostics has multiple benefits: a reduction in commissioning and start-up time, less ‘down-time’, and an improvement in the quality of acquired data. At Diamond Light Source a methodical evaluation of a selection of monochromatic X-ray Beam Position Monitors (XBPMs), using a range of position detection techniques, and from a range of suppliers, was carried out. The results of these experiments are presented, showing the measured RMS noise on the position measurement of each device for a given flux, energy, beam size, and bandwidth. A discussion of the benefits and drawbacks of each of the various devices and techniques is also included.

For a proper design of the cryogenic layout of superconducting insertion devices it is necessary to take into account the heat load from the beam to the cold beam tube. In this paper we describe the experimental equipment, the installation of COLDDIAG in the Diamond Light Source and selected examples of the measurements performed to show the capabilities of this unique instrument.

Diamond Light source is a third generation synchrotron facility dedicated to producing radiation of outstanding brightness, ranging from infra-red to x-rays. The short electron bunches that are accelerated around the storage ring are susceptible to the phenomenon of microbunching instabilities when the bunch charge exceeds a threshold. The primary feature of the microbunch instabilities is the onset of bursts of radiation in the THz range. The high frequencies involved in the emissions make detection and analysis challenging. A 60-90 GHz Schottky Barrier Diode detector was installed to investigate turn by turn evolution of the instabilities. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Nonlinear beam dynamics plays a crucial role in defining the performance of a storage ring. The beam lifetime, the injection efficiency, and the dynamic and momentum apertures available to the beam are optimized during the design phase by a proper optimization of the linear lattice and of the distribution of sextupole families. The correct implementation of the design model, especially the nonlinear part, is a nontrivial accelerator physics task. Several parameters of the nonlinear dynamics can be used to compare the real machine with the model and eventually to correct the accelerator. Most of these parameters are extracted from the analysis of turn-by-turn data after the excitation of betatron oscillations of the particles in the ring. We present the experimental results of the campaign of measurements carried out at the Diamond storage ring to characterize the nonlinear beam dynamics. A combination of frequency map analysis with the detuning with momentum measurements has allowed for a precise calibration of the nonlinear model that can accurately reproduce the nonlinear beam dynamics in Diamond. © 2011 American Physical Society.

In this paper we present the experience at Diamond Light Source in the design, implementation, and operation of low momentum compaction factor lattices for the generation of short x-ray pulses and coherent THz radiation. The effects of higher-order terms in the expansion of the momentum compaction factor on beam dynamics are reviewed from a theoretical point of view, and the details of both high- and low-emittance solutions at Diamond are discussed. Measurements taken to characterize the lattices under a variety of machine conditions are presented, along with the practical limitations that exist as the momentum compaction factor is made to approach zero. © 2011 American Physical Society.

This paper describes the design and implementation of an FPGA-based transverse multibuch feedback system for Diamond Light Source. The system is designed to damp instabilities of the electron beam up to 250~MHz in both horizontal and vertical planes. The feedback algorithm and diagnostics features are implemented and verified using SystemVerilog HDL language on a Xilinx XCV2P30 FPGA.

Third generation synchrotron light sources are characterized by a low emittance and a low emittance coupling. Some light sources are already operating with extremely low coupling close to 0.1%. Measurement of the transverse beam size is generally used to measure the emittance and the coupling. To this end, several systems are currently used and an x-ray pinhole camera is one of them. In this paper we derive the point spread function of the x-ray pinhole camera both analytically and numerically using the Fresnel diffraction integral and taking into account the broadband spectrum of the bending magnet source, and we show that an optimized design allows the measurement of extremely small vertical beam sizes below $5\text{ }\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$. The point spread function of several scintillator screens is also measured, and it shows that the contribution of the diffraction and the screen point spread functions have to be taken into account for an accurate measurement of a low coupling. Finally, we show measurements of the vertical beam sizes as small as $6\text{ }\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$ for our nonoptimized setup.

Electron beam stability at the source points of synchrotron radiation is an accepted requirement for the preservation of the low emittance provided in 3rd generation light sources. With emittances approaching 1nm rad this typically requires sub micrometer positional stability at the source point over time scales from milliseconds to at least hours and ideally much longer. These challenges are routinely met by the use of fast orbit feedback systems. This contribution sets out to first establish a relevant representation of stability over many orders of magnitude in time and looks at available stable references. To complement this, data on the electron and X-ray beam stability achieved at various operational light sources is compared.

In this paper we demonstrate significant improvements to the stability of the monochromatic X-ray beam intensity on several beamlines at Diamond, using a modulation of the pitch axis of the DCM with a piezoelectric actuator. The modulation is detected on an intensity diagnostic (e.g. an ion chamber) using a software lock-in technique. The detected amplitude and phase are used in a feedback to keep the DCM at the peak of the rocking curve, or any arbitrary position 'off-peak' which might be desired to detune the DCM and reject unwanted harmonics. A major advantage of this software based system is the great flexibility offered, using standard, readily available instrumentation. Measurements of the short and long-term performance of the feedback on several beamlines are presented, and the limitations of such a feedback are discussed.
