Insects have evolved a variety of physiological and behavioral responses to various toxins in natural and managed ecosystems. However, insect behavior is seldom considered in insecticide studies although insects are capable of changing their behavior in response to their sensory perception of insecticides, which may compromise insecticide efficacy. This is particularly serious for insect pests that are physiologically resistant to insecticides since insecticide avoidance may further compromise their management. Locomotion plays a major role determining insecticide exposure and was, therefore, considered in investigating the behavioral responses of male and female adult insects from an insecticide-susceptible and two insecticide-resistant strains of the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a major pest of stored cereals. Different dosedependent behavioral responses were expected among strains with behavioral resistance less likely to occur in physiologically resistant insects since they are able to withstand higher doses of insecticide. The behavioral responses to deltamethrinsprayed surfaces differed among the maize weevil strains. Such responses were concentration-independent for all of the strains. Stimulus-independent behavioral resistance was unrelated to physiological resistance with one resistant strain exhibiting higher rates of flight take-off and the other resistant strain exhibiting lower flight take-off. Female mobility was similar for all strains, unlike male mobility. Males of each strain exhibited a pattern of mobility following the same trend of flight take-off. Behavioral patterns of response to insecticide are, therefore, variable among strains, particularly among insecticide-resistant strains, and worth considering in resistance surveys and management programs. A common assumption in models of insecticide resistance evolution is the association between resistance and fitness costs in the absence of insecticides. There is empirical evidence of such associations, but their physiological basis (and mitigation) is little investigated. Pyrethroid-resistant populations of the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) offer this opportunity. Pyrethroid resistance in this species was initially observed in five Brazilian states by 1995, but the phenomenon apparently decreased and did not spread to other regions, probably due to the occurrence of a fitness disadvantage in resistant individuals in the absence of insecticides. The present investigation aims to verify whether differences in respiration rate and fat body morphology are related to differences in rate of development in Brazilian populations of S. zeamais resistant to insecticides, and thereby provide evidence for the existence (or not) of a physiological fitness cost acting against insecticide resistance in maize weevils. This may occur due to a possible energy trade-off between insecticide resistance and other physiological processes associated with development and reproduction. To achieve this, studies of the rate of development, respiration and fat body cytomorphology are carried out in one insecticide-susceptible (from Sete Lagoas) and two resistant populations (from Jacarezinho and Juiz de Fora) of S. zeamais. The resistant population from Jacarezinho shows that higher body mass is associated with higher energy reserves (larger trophocyte area) for development and reproduction, as well as for insecticide resistance. However, the resistant population from Juiz de Fora does not appear to have large enough energy allocation for insecticide-resistance expression and development and/or reproductive performance, suggesting a trade-off between resistance and other life history traits. The geological environments and their influence on the processes of erosion-sedimentation-pollution in soils due to heavy metals in the Distrito Pecuario "Alturas de Nazareno" were evaluated, with a functional biological diversity supported by the natural regeneration of the tree component. The work of pedological prospection: identified four types of soils, described and sampled at 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm deep. It was confirmed the prevalence of erosive processes and the possible access of the grass roots into a layer of peculiar alteration (level 25 - 30 cm) in "Alturas de Nazareno", with considerable proportions of NiO2, Zn, Cd, Cr and Fe. In the Polje of San José, there was a preeminence of the sedimentation-pollution from the surface (level 0 - 30 cm), associated to toxic organic compounds, nutrients and organic matter, where any not controlled action in the cattle systems could move the heavy metals present in the soil to the pastures and the water provided to the animals. Se evaluaron integralmente los ambientes geológicos y su influencia en los procesos de erosión-sedimentación-contaminación de suelos por metales pesados en el Distrito Pecuario “Alturas de Nazareno", con diversidad biológica funcional amparada por la regeneración natural del componente arbóreo. El trabajo de prospección pedológica identificó cuatro tipos de suelos, descritos y muestreados a profundidades de 0 - 20 cm y 20 - 40 cm. Se confirmó en las “Alturas de Nazareno" el predominio de procesos erosivos y eventual acceso de las raíces de los pastos a una capa de alteración pelicular (nivel 25 - 30 cm), con proporciones apreciables de NiO2, Zn, Cd, Cr, Fe. En la Polje de San José hubo preeminencia de la sedimentación-contaminación desde la propia superficie (nivel 0 - 30 cm), asociada a compuestos orgánicos tóxicos, nutrientes y materia orgánica, donde cualquier acción no controlada en los sistemas ganaderos podría movilizar los metales pesados presentes en los suelos hacia los pastos y en el agua suministrada a los animales. The postharvest fermentation process of coffee has rapidly advanced in the last few years due to the search for quality and diversity of sensorial profiles. A new type of fermentation, named self-induced-anaerobic fermentation (SIAF), is a promising process that has been increasingly used. This study aims to evaluate the sensorial improvement of coffee beverages during SIAF and the influence of microorganism's community and enzymatic activity. The SIAF process was conducted in Brazilian farms for up to 8 days. The sensorial quality of coffee was evaluated by Q-graders; the microbial community was identified by the high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA and ITS regions; and the enzymatic activity (invertase, polygalacturonase, and endo-β-mannanase) was also investigated. SIAF increased up to 3.8 points in the total score of sensorial evaluation (compared to the non-fermented sample), in addition to presenting more flavor diversity (especially within the fruity and sweetness descriptors). The high-throughput sequencing identified 655 bacterial and 296 fungal species during the three processes. The bacteria Enterobacter sp., Lactobacillus sp., Pantoea sp., and the fungi Cladosporium sp. and Candida sp. were the predominant genera. Fungi that are potential producers of mycotoxin were identified throughout the process, which indicates a risk of contamination since some of them are not degraded in the roasting process. Thirty-one species of microorganisms were described for the first time in coffee fermentation. The microbial community was influenced by the place where the process was carried out, mainly in relation to the diversity of fungi. Washing the coffee fruits before fermenting led to a fast reduction of pH; a fast development of Lactobacillus sp. and a fast dominance of Candida sp.; a reduction of the fermentation time necessary to achieve the best sensorial score; an increase in the invertase activity in the seed; a more expressive invertase activity in the husk; and a decreasing trend in polygalacturonase activity in the coffee husk. The increase in endo-β-mannanase activity suggests that coffee starts germinating during the process. SIAF has a huge potential to increase the quality and add value to coffee, but further studies must be conducted to access its safety. This study aimed to analyze the accuracy of the clinical indicators of the nursing diagnosis of dysfunctional gastrointestinal motility in infants from neonatal units and identify their association with clinical variables. This is a study of the diagnostic accuracy of clinical indicators of the diagnosis of dysfunctional gastrointestinal motility, with a cross-sectional design, performed on 228 hospitalized infants in neonatal units. A high prevalence of dysfunctional gastrointestinal motility was identified in the studied population. Regarding accuracy measures, clinical indicators such as increased gastric residual, changes in bowel sounds, bile-colored gastric residual, regurgitation, absence of flatus, and hard and formed stool were useful to discriminate between infants with and without dysfunctional gastrointestinal motility. The findings can help nurses during the diagnostic process, as they identify which defining characteristics can be used to confirm or rule out the probability of occurrence of the diagnosis.

While Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) is characterized by an almost unifying mutation in MYD88, clinical presentation at diagnosis and response to therapy can be widely different among WM patients. Current prognostic tools only partially address this clinical heterogeneity. Limited data compiling both molecular and cytogenetic information have been used in risk prognostication in WM. To investigate the clinical impact of genetic alterations in WM, we evaluated cytogenetic and molecular abnormalities by chromosome banding analyses, FISH and targeted NGS in a retrospective cohort of 239 WM patients, including 187 patients treated by first-line chemotherapy or immunochemotherapy. Most frequent mutations were identified in MYD88 (93%), CXCR4 (29%), MLL2 (11%), ARID1A (8%), TP53 (8%), CD79A/B (6%), TBL1XR1 (4%) and SPI1 (4%). The median number of cytogenetic abnormalities was two (range, 0-22). Main cytogenetic abnormalities were 6q deletion (del6q) (27%), trisomy 4 (tri4) (12%), tri18 (11%), del13q (11%), tri12 (7.5%) and del17p (7%). Complex karyotype (CK) was observed in 15% (n = 31) of cases, including 5% (n = 12) of highly CK (high-CK). TP53 abnormalities (TP53abn) were present in 15% of evaluable patients. TP53abn and del6q were associated with CK/high-CK (p < .05). Fifty-three percent of patients with hyperviscosity harbored CXCR4 mutations. Cytogenetic and molecular abnormalities did not significantly impact time to first treatment and response to therapy. Prognostic factors associated with shorter PFS were del6q (p = .01), TP53abn (p = .002) and high-CK (p = .01). These same factors as well as IPSSWM, tri4, CXCR4 frameshift and SPI1 mutations were significantly associated with lower OS (p < .05). Objective: To develop a classification tree of clinical indicators for the correct prediction of the nursing diagnosis "Sedentary lifestyle" (SL) in people with high blood pressure (HTN)., Methods: A cross-sectional study conducted in an outpatient care center specializing in high blood pressure and Mellitus diabetes located in northeastern Brazil. The sample consisted of 285 people between 19 and 59 years old diagnosed with high blood pressure and was applied an interview and physical examination, obtaining socio-demographic information, related factors and signs and symptoms that made the defining characteristics for the diagnosis under study. The tree was generated using the CHAID algorithm (Chi-square Automatic Interaction Detection)., Results: The construction of the decision tree allowed establishing the interactions between clinical indicators that facilitate a probabilistic analysis of multiple situations allowing quantify the probability of an individual presenting a sedentary lifestyle. The tree included the clinical indicator Choose daily routine without exercise as the first node. People with this indicator showed a probability of 0.88 of presenting the SL. The second node was composed of the indicator Does not perform physical activity during leisure, with 0.99 probability of presenting the SL with these two indicators. The predictive capacity of the tree was established at 69.5%., Conclusion: Decision trees help nurses who care HTN people in decision-making in assessing the characteristics that increase the probability of SL nursing diagnosis, optimizing the time for diagnostic inference.

Glycan arrays have been established as the premier technical platform for assessing the specificity of carbohydrate binding proteins, an important step in functional glycomics research. Access to large libraries of well-characterized oligosaccharides remains a major bottleneck of glycan array research, and this is particularly true for glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), a class of linear sulfated polysaccharides which are present on most animal cells. Solid-supported synthesis is a potentially powerful tool for the accelerated synthesis of relevant GAG libraries with variations in glycan sequence and sulfation pattern. We have evaluated a series of iduronic acid and idose donors, including a couple of novel n-pentenyl orthoester donors in the sequential assembly of heparan sulfate precursors from monosaccharide building blocks in solution and on a polystyrene resin. The systematic study of donor and acceptor performance up to the trisaccharide stage in solution and on the solid support have resulted in a general strategy for the solid-phase assembly of this important class of glycans.

A novel ester type linker which upon cleavage releases the glycans as carbamate protected aminoglycosides was successfully employed in the sequential assembly of L-idose and azido glucose monosaccharide building blocks to heparan sulfate precursors.

This study assessed the sociodemographic characteristics and the characteristics of therapeutic adhesion of 27 bearers of arterial hypertension undergoing ambulatorial treatment who had hypertensive urgencies crises or emergencies in the city of Fortaleza in the period between October of 2002 and May of 2003. The majority were women, between 50 and 60-years old, with little formal education, treatment time shorter than 5 years and time of diagnosis varying from 5 to 10 years. The use of medicine was the treatment that was most mentioned, followed by the reduction of the consumption of salt and attendance to medical appointments. However, attending the appointments and receiving orientation did not seem to change their behavior, since most of the patients that were interviewed practiced no physical exercises and demonstrated little knowledge of the illness, for they attributed the rise of the arterial pressure to emotional factors.
